WWE 13 News Post

As of this afternoon, THQ as a company has been dissolved and all of it's licenses and properties have been auctioned off. We know where several prominent franchises and studios are going but we simply have no idea on where the WWE video games license has found as a home.

What we do know is that a new company will definitely be publishing WWE games starting immediately. The Twitterverse is abuzz with rumors that either of both EA and Take Two have bought the license -- and it would stand to reason that one side of the other is correct. The WWE was owed $45 million from THQ when the company went under, so most likely WWE will be looking for a stable and somewhat wealthier business partner this time around.

The status of a WWE game for 2013 will depend upon how the new publisher approaches WWE video games. If the publisher starts from scratch, there may not be another WWE game on the market for at least a year or two.

Requests for confirmation out of either EA or 2K have been returned with no comments as of this writing. I'll update this space as soon as any real news breaks.

Update #1: A formal court document shows that WWE's license was NOT auctioned off in the sale of THQ's assets. This tends to indicate WWE cancelled their licensing deal with THQ and has shopped or is shopping their property unilaterally.

Update #2: A source from 2K has confirmed that the company will be acquiring the WWE games license. IGN is also reporting this story on their site.

I enjoyed that mode. I'd like to see a mix of that and Universe.

for GM mode, guys in 2k should take a look at Total Extreme Wrestling...

If they don't retain the Creation Suite this could be a huge let down because this is one of the most talked about feature above any sports game.

I'm happy 2K got the WWE license. I think in 2 years they will be able to put together a quality game. I'd expect a very bare-bones game this year, since there's only 8 months to produce a game that would be released around the time of WWE 12-13.

yes, WWE have one of the best creations in any sports game and since they all in one family NBA2k could could take it have creation for Slam Dunk.

Ya, I think sliders will be THE biggest change for WWE games. Sliders can turn any sports game into a realistic game or a completely arcade game. NBA can be a normal basketball game, or make it like hardcore streetball with no fouls,no outs, players can jump real high and dunk everything lol.

The historic mode will be interesting to see. Though THQ with attitude era mode basically took care of this stuff already for a few key moments in WWE history. Hopefully we can bring in lots of legends for 2Ks WWE game, cause WWE13 has so many great people to play with like Rock,Austin,HBK,Trish,Lita,Steph,Old school Undertaker and so many others

Commentary will be great to listen to cause 2K is known for it's great commentary. The NBA Today feature was great for that reason alone. Not just real time commentary, but real time graphics(which popped up in cutscenes that showed real life scores, standings, stats).

Don't think real arena modeling will be that important. 2Ks arenas are all the same aren't they? Minus the scoreboards(but WWE doesn't use those). So that'd actually be a plus for 2K, cause Raw/SD/PPV arenas are almost all the same, with exception of what the tron and ring aprons say. Not like baseball where it's completely different

regarding arena they already have Creation for that and now under 2k only need to do is enhance it and make it better.

for features/game mode..ect is IWC(internet wrestling community) that 2k should go to for advice but for knowledge in wrestlings Paul Heyman.

online Ultimate WWE could work, you and your friends select any one of WWE-WCW-ECW and draft wrestlers for their promotions. one of the guy i will never pick is Hogan, Hogan is a cancer to promotion in long run and HBK of 90's who is an ******* at backstage....by saying that we have characteristic sliders like EGO's who only think for themselves.

players able to make their own storylines/angle for Ultimate WWE.

Players able to record their promos for that their wrestler and you have list of promos from players. now and then Players choose best promo of the week and best Mic worker of the year who always cuts promo. if any players cutting a promo use offensive language or step over the line then it will be deleted or 3 strike you never able to use that feature having to cut an promo agian.

Who says they drop it in fall? why not just wait until spring and drop it in late March 2014? Hype it with Mania.

I agree. I can wait a year or two for the first release.

They might drop it in the summer of 2014, because they release NBA in the fall and MLB in the spring.

MLB 2K is the reason why we need to wait until a little longer than 24 hours after they acquired the series before we know what they can/will/should do and what not. 2K is just mailing in MLB this year and the game has never been that impressive, especially compared to The Show. It would be nice to think everything we get in NBA 2K can be made for a wrestling game, but no guarantees. We'll just have to wait and see.

Allow me to pump the brakes on 2K Sports as well.

Outside of NBA 2K and fond memories of a football game released almost nine years ago, what sort of track record do they have? This is the same published that released the middling MLB 2K series, which people found endless reasons to complain about. 2K Sports also has a reputation of weak servers; say what you want about EA Sports, but my experience with their online features (with regard to connectivity and intended functionality) has always been very positive.

I think that some people's impressions of EA Sports here are way too colored by their respective opinions of Madden and NCAA, which are by all accounts controversial games due primarily to the exclusivity arrangements. EA Sports' other series - FIFA, NHL, Tiger Woods - are all games that range from "good" to "excellent", and the most recent FIFA was a game of the year contender. Outside of EA Sports, Electronic Arts in general publishes a ton of quality console games as well, too many to mention.

To be clear, I think 2K will ultimately do just fine with the WWE license, given time, particularly in the presentation department. I also think, however, that the mistrust of EA is quite misplaced and colored too strongly by the efforts of one studio (Tiburon) producing one type of game (American football simulation).

So does anybody know what happens now with DLCs and patches and so on now that THQ's gone? Just something I was wondering about.

That would be insanely awesome. The depth of TEW with the ability to watch the show in CPU vs CPU matches? Sold.

MLB 2K13 people weren't even sure it was gonna be made(it ended up being made), so who knows if 2K14 will be made.

Summer release seems random, though I can see WWE doing that especially with their PG model(summer time=summer vacation=video game time for kids). I can see it being released around WM time though, where we get all the breaking news for the game and stuff around WM, and in late April we see game released.

If not that, then it has to be released by Summerslam. Cause WWE has their annual superstar video game challenge, which is part of WWEs fan axxess at Summerslam(aka the 2nd biggest fan interaction event of the year for WWE)

I doubt there will be a patch, which sucks.

Thinking about this even more and looking at what they have done with the NBA series and the Post-Game Interviews, they could make a real special Career mode using that type of interview feature - I mean there are like 300 interview questions in 2k13.

I know they very well could flop with the WWE series, but what makes me happy is that they actually have the potential to take this thing way higher than THQ ever did.

IMO 2k over THQ:
Gameplay- can be done better, THQ gameplay was very cut and dry. Hopefully 2K can make playing the game fun again.

Presentation- can be done WAY better, just look at all their sports games

Creation- THQ may have the edge on this. NBA 2k player creation is kinda weak.

Graphics- Can be done better, but THQ's graphics were pretty damn good last game

AI- can be done WAY better, again looking at previous games with their player tendencies and things like that. This isn't even an argument.

I hope we are not jumping the gun on this. The WWE license was not part of the THQ sale. Their are rumors that the license went back to WWE.

# 60 EAGLESFAN10 @ 01/23/13 11:25 PM
If 2K really does have the license then Commentary will once again be back in WWE games
