NBA Live 13 News Post

NBA Live 13 has been canned, kicked to the curb, canceled, put out to pasture. However you want to put it, NBA Live 13 is no more.

Below is a statement from EA Sports Executive Vice President, Andrew Wilson.

Quote:
After a lot of consideration, we have made the decision to not launch NBA LIVE 13. I'd like to give you a bit of perspective.

When we started the process of bringing back NBA LIVE, we knew it was going to be a long journey. We started by moving the game to a new studio. We brought in some of the best new technology that has helped fuel innovation in our other games. We launched an even deeper level of engagement with our community to gather more feedback directly from fans. And we built a whole new development team to bring it all to life. We felt like we were on the right path.

We also made a commitment to deliver a high quality experience — this is what our fans expect and what we demand of ourselves at EA SPORTS. But making great games is not easy, and we're just not there yet on NBA LIVE 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it's clear that we won't be ready in October. And rather than launch midway through the season, we're going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry.

I'm disappointed that we have not yet met our high expectations with NBA LIVE, but I remain motivated about where we're going. We're committed to delivering new innovation in online, and our progress in the visual presentation of the game continues to take big strides. We also know that a great game starts with great gameplay, and this remains a huge priority for us.

This wasn't an easy decision, but it's the right one for our fans. I hope you'll agree when you're able to play the game next year.

Andrew Wilson
Executive Vice President, EA SPORTS

If you haven't been able to do it so far, it's not gonna happen now.

If you go back to earlier articles they didn't have full dev team together until last November.. but continue to crow...

Which is who's fault? Why try to release so soon?

If I'd heard this back in May and wouldn't have believed it, but after the last few months, can't say I'm surprised.

At least they kept the bluff going long enough to scare 2K into making a great game this year. Just look at the last 3 years, EA announces NBA Elite, which will be revolutionary and completely physics driven ... 2K responds with 2K11 (probably the biggest leap in a single development cycle I've ever seen). EA shelves the franchise for a year ... 2K releases 2K12 (which I think most people can agree wasn't their best effort). EA says they're coming back with a game that's been in development for 2 years ... 2K13 implements new dribble controls, player movement, presentation, and the best player interactions/collisions in the history of the series. I don't think this is pure coincidence.

This is why, even though I love the 2K series, I'm pulling for NBA Live. From the players' point of view, they need each other.

Great point. This is why I hope EA doesnt get to renew the NFL license. Football needs comp, just like the NBA. Without, nothing really changes. Madden sure hasn't

Rumor maybe they are waiting on the new consoles coming out next year, to implement a new game engine unlike anything seen in a basketball sim.

Damn, guess they will not get to make that big splash in sales that the OS staff promised.

The OS staff? You serious right now? When? I want post dates, times and usernames. If what you say is true, which don't worry, I already know it isn't, this should be a simple task.

Can't say I was completely surprised to read this news but it's odd that they've released a trailer a couple of weeks before its cancellation. What I don't understand is if they wanted to continue building from Elite 11 so bad then why did they change studios? They lost precious time to continue making the game from going to Tiburon, hiring people and make them understand a flawed code when if the team in EA Canada continued making the game they should be having a decent game by now since they always talk about "three-year plans". I don't know how they'll recover from this but they need to bring their A game if they want to have interest from people and their own fans.

Poetic Justice for 2k for when EA bought the NFL license. EA even had M Wang and was unable to keep him. EA was beat fair and square on this one and was unable to acquire an exclusive NBA license or acquire Take Two (which it tried to do right as the 2008 economic meltdown occurred).

Bottom line is we, the basketball community and our reactions are what fueled this cancelation

So we've got a poster STILL defending EA's Live team after all this, which is just embarassing (seriously, does your dad work there or something?), and another playing the "OS is in EA's back pocket" card (despite multiple mods in this thread alone raking EA over the coals for this).

Classic.

Just think about what would happen to madden if they lost their exclusivity to it. Might go the way of nba live. EA has just not been able to put out good games for these next gen systems.

Well, let's at least be fair... FIFA and NHL are VERY good games, and EA as a company puts out a ton of other great non-sports games.

Obviously Live is garbage, and Madden is... ok... but let's not throw the entire company under the same blanket here.

This argument really needs to die. Fine, they didn't work for 3 years. They took some time off. But it's not as if they started from scratch. There was a functional game there already. They had a framework to work with. With 70 people for 8 months and a headstart, there is little excuse for not putting out SOMETHING. So lets just stop that argument here and now. Time wasn't an excuse for Elite and they aren't using it here now. The game was just not up to snuff. Accept it and move on.

They went with Elite because they and to go in a new direction. They were already committed to that had have to see it through. People have fallen for the "next gen engine" bit for too long with the Live engine. Live 10 is the last you will see of the Live engine that has been in place for quite too long.

And they will recover. You have far too many people. That care only about the label. Not what's actually in the package. Just traverse old threads and look at the people ready and willing to buy the game knowing full well it was likely to be the inferior game. The same people who's acceptance lead to the denial that things needed to change for that game. So they will be fine. They could release a text based basketball game, and some people will buy it anyway talking about how great the menus look...
