Finally got my copy last night. I only played one game -- damn skill games sucked me in! -- Arsenal/Man City from the live fixtures. I was short on time, so I went with 10 minute halves; normally I play 15. Using my WIP sliders (will probably post once I'm satisfied), it was a tight defensive game with few clear chances. I was fairly happy with the pace/flow; there were generally several players behind the ball to keep both teams from racing forward and lots of congestion around the box. Final shot attempts were in single digits, not many fouls, but I think we had one of the lenient English refs and I need to get more comfortable dribbling to draw them.

We appeared headed for a goalless draw until Olivier Giroud created a yard of space with his first touch in the box with his back to goal. He turned & fired across the goal, causing the goalie to make a diving save, only for a charging Santi Cazorla to pounce on the rebound for a 1-0 lead in the 89th. I closed out the game with some clearances and time-wasting in the corner. One-nil to The Arsenal!

I think that is the first time I really used 1st touch to create something out of nothing. Giroud was facing the passer with his back to goal, standing just inside the 18yd box. As I passed it to his feet, the defender closed him down aggressively, almost on his back when the ball arrived. When I took an intentionally heavy touch away from me using RT, it gave enough space to get the shot away. Brilliant, and in my excitement, of course I didn't save a replay.

I believe you can search for manual opponents, but I hear it's hard to find a game. As far as competing with an assisted player... I guess it depends on the respective skill levels. I think shooting and through balls would be the big issues. Short passing, crossing, and lob passing can be advantageous to a skilled manual player. You can do things assisted just won't let you do.

I use Tele Broadcast with 15 Height & 5 Zoom. There isn't much margin for error with shooting, but you'll get the hang of it over time. Part of it is simply accepting that you're going to put one in the stands now & then.

First touch definitely changes defending. Gone are the days of dribbling out of the trouble. Now you have to use clearances or risk giving up easy goals.

Manual just takes practice, there's no way around it. This it the first year that I have everything on manual and I am loving it. Once you get good at manual passing, you might actually be better than with assisted. On manual, you can put a pass right where you want it, where with assisted the game tries to guess where you want the ball and player to meet (sometimes poorly).

I started in stages. First I did manual passing, then shooting, then finally through balls and lob passes. There will be frustration at first but eventually when you get the hang of it, putting together the perfect scoring play is just that much more satisfying.

Great tip. I'm going to try these steps and hit the lab hard this weekend. I've been playing Fifa for 4 years now, but did not really get into it until Fifa 12. I'm loving '13 regardless of how frustrated I get using manual. LOL!

I think it is time for me to graduate to full 100% manual shooting. I still going to stick with tele broadcast camera though. I tried Pro Cam and omg that messed me up so bad.

This game is just flat out awesome. I've always been slightly drawn to the soccer games, but this is my first year really diving into virtual pro mode and I'm having a great time. I was put out on loan from my Mexican team to Coventry City and we are having a great season with me controlling the midfield. What sucks is that I will have to go back to my parent team next year, I would love to stick with Coventry.

Selected Ireland as my home country and just got called up. It's so much fun now being a Virtual Pro as you are constantly bombarded with games from different tourneys and your league, and you are constantly upgraded skills through your play. It's kind of like Skyrim, which is one of my favorite RPGs, in that you only upgrade the skills or areas you routinely use. One of my favorite sports game of all-time, will definitely share time with NBA 2k13 this fall.

Is anyone else out there having severe problems with the ability to connect to the EA online servers? I have attempted to play 8 games online, and I have only completed 4. The other 4 have been disconnected. I have been playing FIFA online for a long time, and I have never experienced the connections issues that I am currently experiencing with this game. I am just curious if my issues were isolated or if other people were experiencing the same.

anyone else noticing a delay in controller response on the xbox 360? Last year i played on PC and it seemed a lot crisper. This time around, there seems to be more delays when I pass, try to push the ball out in space, etc.

I really notice it in the power meter and taking PK's as well. I push the button when the meter is in the green, but it just drifts into the yellow (or even the red) causing an awful mis-hit.

I noticed it on the ps3 playing the early release.

Demo for me was garbage and unconvincing.

The actual game is much, much better and probably the best FIFA edition in years. My main two gripes (aside from spotty online servers thus far) are the speed of play and the way that some guys don't react despite the ball being nearby, in essence, them not fighting for 50-50s nearby.

I love, love, love how things are not as scripted anymore and that goals seem to come from a variety of players now (though I do not think I have scored with either fullback yet in 50 games).

The speed of play thing is something I doubt we'll see change. A lot of non-soccer guys buy FIFA13 because they enjoy it. Why? Because it FIFA's pace while not realistic, is like basketball's fast paced and frantic action, which is what they seem to enjoy. Don't see EA shunning that big chunk of fans who buy the game who are not hardcore fans.

What I do see EA doing is further fine-tuning the rest of the game so that it is enjoyable for the hardcore footy/soccer fans, but we'll likely always have to deal with the speed always being this quick.

I'm surprised there is no "very slow" option.

I agree, the game feels a tad too fast once you get used to 'slow'.

Does anyone know what attributes (if any) effect using the shield button? I'm thinking a combination of 'attack position' and 'strength' but I could be wrong.

I like when feeding the striker and I just hold R2 to shield the ball and the defender over commits and I turn beautifully past the guy for a 1v1 with the keeper. So awesome with the physical play this year and animations.

I'm very disappointed with FIFA 13, this after playing hundreds of FIFA 12 games online and hundreds in previous versions. For a start I feel like my players are skating. But the ping-pong passing is back in full effect. The big rewards in this game are, yet again, high pressure and pinging the ball around quickly. Mash the pass button and you practically guarentee a win. A few elements of actual skill that I used to employ successfully in FIFA 12 appear to have been rendered redundant this time around as well, which makes it even more laughable - such as defending by fronting up to the player with the ball. You forced them to pass the ball or cross it which and that was essentially a way of dealing with the high pressure that dominates online. Now, there's no way to stop it. It's basically much easier to just breeze past a player in that situation. Again, making defending much harder.

I could quite easily trade FIFA 13 and go back to FIFA 12 in an instant.

I have a player who has great strength, balance, and finishing. He is a monster one on one in the box.

Very good game but there's alot of in game problems like EA servers and game freezing in all game modes. Is this game better then Fifa 2012?

Players with both good balance and strength are really fun to play with (i.e..Rooney, Tevez..)

i'm really enjoying the game, first touch can get me mad sometimes but is just a new feature that you have to get used to and it actually makes the game better and slightly more realistic.

the menus could be less laggy though...
