So I'm taking a PES hiatus (recent patch is a joke) - and trying FIFA.

After a couple days, this game is ridiculously...unrealistically...fast. It's not just the pace of play, it's the animation speed. Players movements are in hyper speed. Everyone's agility seems crazy. Yes, this is also using lower tier clubs - the animations just don't add up.

Not sure where EA is going with 13 - but count me out for now - 12 was a lot better (especially on PC) so I can't think of 13 being more polished?

Yeah, it's too fast. And it's borderline unplayable on full-manual because of that very fact. Shooting in particular is just ridiculous on manual at this speed. Meth freaks must just love this game.

Random question: does anyone know how to select a specific arena for practice matches? They just seem to shuffle through them randomly. There was an option in previous FIFAs. There's North America, South America, Eastern Europe, Africa and the city one in Japan (I think).

Yeah, I think I'm gonna take a break from FIFA for a while. I just spend several hours tweaking sliders just to find a way to make the speed, possession and passing at least somewhat realistic. Regardless of what I do, I can play as a 1 (or 0.5) star team against the Spanish national team (or any elite caliber team) on Legendary and still win the possession battle handily. I play possession, and the CPU passes/dribbles ahead and tries to shoot as quick as possible. CTT tactics don't help enough.

Also, the ninja/cheat CPU defender tackle skills are annoying. Looking at slow-mo replays, it just isn't right. I'll slip by a defender, only to have him shift his momentum and body instantly to stick a leg out and knock the ball away. It's just not possible for me to do that to the CPU with tactical defending.

The thing about this game that frustrates the hell out of me is the number of successful tackles by the AI compared to the number of fouls committed. It's just ridiculous. Being able to make 25-40 tackles and only commit 1-3 fouls is just unrealistic. On a good day, I successful make 10-12 tackles in the same game, but the AI is just too good in winning the ball back easily without any foul calls.

Foul calls and penalties in sports games is one of my pet peeves. If there can't be enough of them called, then the game becomes too much of an arcade game, and not as realistic. FIFA several years ago had a realistic number of fouls committed per game. Now it is noticeably absent.

I've tried like hell to increase the number of fouls on the CPU side. When I increase marking to the highest levels possible, it just turns the CPU defenders into impenetrable machines. And the aggression slider in custom tactics doesn't do a damn thing in comparison to recent years. There's just too much precision on offense and defense in close quarters on the ball. Players don't move realistically. Either you get a clean break past a defender, or he steals it instantly. No middle ground. And the impact-engine Jerry Lewis pratfalls add insult to injury.

I just wish we could get those 1-2 ghost fouls that the CPU has the benefit of in seemingly every game. Manuel Rui Barbosa has it out for us.

Yeah, I had the console version of FIFA 13 for a day. Back to old reliable FIFA 12 on the PC with editing player ratings and value ranges to make for a better game. Been working with Bangus from SG and he's got this game running incredibly.

Last match I played I lost 3-0 as Udinese against AC Milan; just outplayed and possession was 60-30 for Milan. Di Natale was out injured and I had nothing up front without him. The best part about it was that the ninja dribble was gone, this felt like a battle of tactics.

Storing people's online virtual pro's seemed like such a good idea but the faults in it are starting to show through. Accomplishments are not getting saved a lot of the time. I got one accomplishment that popped after 3 matches in a row because it never saved each time. I am noticing progress on different accomplishments that aren't accumulating because of this issue. Very frustrating.

At least you got a free kick. I'm sick and tired of the CPU grabbing my shirt from behind, causing me to lose the ball, with no foul. I've been dragged down from behind by the shirt IN THE PENALTY BOX with no call. Sometimes there's a "play on" indicator, but no foul. I'd rather they not play advantage at all, and just call a foul every time. It might slow the game down (which is actually what we want), but it would make for more realistic foul #'s.

BTW, I still love the game. It's got its faults, but for me, it's the best game yet. On slow speed, full manual controls, the pace is just fine.

Agreed on this assessment. The overall gameplay is a step backward. The general speed and animations during play are much too fast, and I feel like every game feels very similar—and this makes the scripting seem especially bad. Last year I felt like I would get a good variety of experiences from one game to the next, and it stayed pretty fresh over the course of the year. There are a lot of successes, but the core game is definitely a disappointment.

It's really too bad because I love the polish of CM, the Youth Academy and progression improvements, and the integration of international competition. Even first touch is a pretty good addition.

It almost feels more like '11, where offensive play was predicated on moving the ball forward as fast as possible. The insane defensive pressure that caused this in '11 isn't exactly the same though. It's like FIFA '13 is a cross between '11 and '12, whereas I felt '12 was quite a departure from the gameplay of '11 in a good way.

Agree 100% ; it's really baffling to be honest. FIFA 12 was a pretty good game - but it also had the occasional issue of the "ninja dribble". It doesn't add up because I wonder if EA truly watch matches at all sometimes. The constant dribbling back and forth, then passing, then dribble back and forth - this would drive a coach crazy.

I really gave FIFA a chance, but I'm back to PES with my global edits; it just seems a bit more polished in terms of gameplay. There is something about FIFA's physics of the players and models that I absolutely love though - so it makes it really hard not to want to pick the game up and get to it. The problem is sliders can't even fix the ninja dribble, even pressure on the ball is misguided because it doesn't pressure the ball carrier - it puts an emphasis on marking the area AROUND the ball carrier....

Honestly, I've gotten used to the speed and gameplay. It really isn't that bad if you find a strategy that works for you. Right now I'm playing on World Class difficulty with slow speed and default sliders, and I'm having some great matches. The right defending can actually force them to buildup instead of constantly counter-attacking.

Somewhat related: does anyone actually play on Legendary difficulty with default sliders? I'd be down if it were possible to manage the CPU's ridiculous through ball and shot ability.

Just got the game the other day and I have to say after 5 games I'm not really enjoying my time. How in the heck can every single player in the game handle the ball so well without losing it from time to time? Like literally players just go backwards, forwards, and side to side and will never lose the ball. Not to mention they do this at ridiculous speeds so you have to block the shot because winning the ball through a standing or sliding tackle is non existent. Players just dribble around tackles like it's nothing. It is absolutely game killing. It just makes the game look and feel atrocious. In order to try and help this I'm going to lower sprint and acceleration speed a crap load. In all honesty this game looks and feels nothing like soccer at the moment.

The other thing is pass speed. Boy oh boy does that need to go down. Crosses are just rocketed. Plus the CPU just makes passes back and forth at fast rates. Like one guy will receive the ball and get rid of it immediately whether he has space or not.

The first game I was enjoying it but then I just realized how there is just no momentum or anything. Players just run around freely and can do anything they want without having to plant and restart running. Just not my cup of tea so far.

I've tried a couple different slider sets but none are what I'm looking for because all facets of the game are done in warp speed. It just has zero pace of what a real soccer game would have. I think I'm averaging about 3 whistles a game to. Just baffles me how comparable this and NHL are. Both games lack stoppages of play and each game basically feels the same.

Just had to turn this crap off after getting a red card for a Theo Walcott slide tackle. Sure would be nice if the CPU would slide in with a sloppy slide tackle once in a while. The only time they get fouls called on them is when they do that stupid push-pull thing. I think that's FIFA's way of "fixing" the non-calls and impact engine stupidity. Giving the CPU yellow cards for push-pull defending, regardless of whether I fall to the ground or not. Course, if they do that in the penalty box it's totally fine. They could punch me in the face and slit my throat and the ref would tell us to play on.

That's not encouraging for a guy like me that only plays offline.

I only play offline as well. DJ my thoughts have changed quite a bit since Orion made a new slider set. He made the pace of the game much more like PES and in fact there's a lot more passing and moving the ball around in FIFA from what I've seen so far. Still really like PES but just got a little bored because some little things FIFA has, PES doesn't. As of now I'm really digging Orion's slider set through the first 4 games I've played. I'm going to play more after I watch the Chelsea game this afternoon. Overall though it feels a lot more like soccer, where before it was a horrific experience. I seriously mean horrific to. So ultimately if I were you and are even thinking of getting the game, I'd say rent or somehow try it first with Orion's sliders and chose if you like it enough to buy it. Wouldn't want you to waste money on it if you didn't like it. I really just decided to buy it because I had some Amazon promotion money and the price was lowered to $39.99.

Thanks for the update. I play FIFA a lot on the Vita, but that's running on 11's engine, I believe. I had 12 for the 360 for quite a while and really enjoyed it, but traded it in towards NBA 2K13. I've been trying to decide whether to get 13 or go back to 12. I hear some good things about PES but the fact is I'm a very casual fan of soccer and FIFA, just appeals to me more.

I'll wait until some BF deals come up to see if I can find the game for around $30-40.

Ya PES probably isn't the game for you then because it's not really a pick up and play game. The controls are much more in depth and if you don't have the time or ambition to learn them than it's not worth it. I really enjoy it. I'd consider myself a very big "sim" gamer. If every game could represent it's sport the way The Show does I'd be really happy. Anyway ya FIFA with Orion's sliders would be pretty good to try out if you get the game. I'd definitely wait for a price drop if your a casual soccer fan because you probably won't play it consistently if you have other go to games. Black Friday is probably a good idea. I remember way back in 08 (Ya a very long time ago) I got FIFA for like $25-$30 at Target. So maybe Amazon or other store will have it for around that price as well. I think Amazon will be your go to place though.

Anyone else notice the new lines of dialogue where Martin Tyler will say something like, "he could have gone down there and gotten the free kick, but it's good to see he stayed up on his feet"? Yeah, heaven forbid someone try to draw a foul, or exaggerate a foul. FIFA lives in a fantasy world where players never dive, in fact they do everything they can to NOT draw a foul, defenders almost always get challenges right, and refs never get offsides calls wrong. Boo.

Also, they try to artificially inflate foul totals with those dumb yellow cards on free kicks. And the other day someone got a yellow card for something that happened after the end of the first half. They never showed what happened, the commentators just said something like, "looks like he thought he could get away with something after the whistle blew, but he was called on it." Then it cut straight to halftime without an option to view a replay.

While this game still has massive flaws, before you give up on it I urge you to play all manual, using custom CPU tactics and orion's sliders.

It's pretty damn fun. Most concerns I'm seeing can be addressed with these. You can't do anything about animations or the players ability on the ball, but there is no way you can complain about the pace of the game when we have the power in our hands to slow it down.

If you put a bit of work into this game you can get a bit out of it, and it's a fairly fun experience.
