NBA 2K13 News Post

2K Sports has just released the written breakdown of all 31 NBA 2K13 Signature Skills.

Quote:
Q: Why create these Signature Skills for 2K13 when you already have several attributes in 2K12?

A: We felt that our existing attribute and tendency system quite didn’t lend itself well enough to various situational moments that happen in basketball, nor did it help identify very specialized players. Outlet passes, winning charge calls, staying hot through in-game breaks, etc, are just a few areas where our attributes system failed to give you what you need. We’re now able to dig deeper into these situations to allow players stand out where they’re most known. Let’s take shot blocking for example. LeBron James is well-known as the best chase down blocker in the league. In 2K12, when you were in a chase down situation, LeBron was unable to block the shot from behind as much as we’d like him to because he had only a 60-ish Block attribute. With the inclusion of the new Sig Skill, Chase Down Artist, we’re now able to give him the types of skills he needs to embarrass the unsuspecting shooter, without having to artificially raise his Block attribute (which would then allow him to block shots in areas he’s not known for). There are reasons like this for every skill created, which is why we’re bringing this feature to you for NBA 2K13.

Here is a list of all 31 signature skills.

and what we're saying to you is that, while we may not agree with dwight being given that skill, the spirit of the skill is rooted in a real thing that happens in the nba.

but no, dwight should not be a defensive anchor, because he covers mistakes instead of raising the quality of his team's defensive efforts and skills like the other two.

They explained why in the original post.

For example, if you want them to just upgrade people through ratings, keep in mind what they would do for LeBron James. For him to have a much more lethal chase down block like he does in real life, they have to upgrade his block. Now is block is WAY too high for NO reason. Would you enjoy backing down LeBron in the paint and feeling like you're playing Bill Russell?

What about the outlet pass skill? They gave it to Kevin Love. If they wanted to just upgrade through ratings and attributes, they'd have to upgrade his passing. Now he turns into John Stockton tossing no looks to Brandon Roy in the corner for 3 pointers.

Would you want that instead?

I'd bet not, so as to prevent any "turn it up to 11" situations.

my guess is no, as you will rarely find two defensive anchors on the same team in the nba. just like you won't have two floor generals on the same team, but if i were to hazard a guess, i'd say it won't stack.

Heat Retention has me mildly worried that it's gonna be OP. Basically, if you have it, once you're hot, the only way you'll cool off is if you miss shots or commit turnovers... a LOT of them, which won't happen if you're hot, so you'll stay hot, etc, etc.

I doubt it, and it shouldn't

who ever said that new tendencies and ratings havent been added to activate these skills in the players arsenal.

Dead eye= shots in traffic resurrection

you might have to have a 80+ rating to give you the dead eye skill.

Example Players: JaVale McGee, Gerald Green, Paul George
When looking to dunk, a player with this skill will look to perform the most spectacular dunk available amongst the dunks in his repertoire. In order for this skill to fire off, however, he must have a stamina level of 80 or higher. Once the dunk completes, his teammates will be given a temporary energy boost.
when I saw this I immediately thought of this

This is more of a quality that should be given to a coach or a coach/player combination. The Knicks didn't play great defense until D'Antoni stepped down, just like the Celtics didn't play amazing defense until Garnett "teamed up" with Doc Rivers. It's not all on the player.

look at the guys who have it. when they're hot, it does take a lot for them to lose it. that's why, sometimes, they take heat check shots just to see how far their luck can stretch.

A: If you press UP on the On the Fly Coaching menu on the d-pad, the Signature Skills HUD will appear. You can leave this up the entire game by never pressing UP on the d-pad again. The HUD sits in the upper left-hand corner in a single player game and in the both the upper left-hand and right-hand corners in a multi-player game (however, you only see yours in an online 2-player game). The HUD shows the name of the player you are actively controlling, the Signature Skills he possesses and his basic stat line. When a skill is not active it will be grayed out. When it is available it will be semi-transparent, basically letting you know you are in a situation where it could be used. When it has been activated it will light up in its full glory and the stat line will change to the name of the Signature Skill that just fired off..
Everybody's gonna be watching their hud trying to trigger signature skills. This is gonna be funny because you know some people will expect their sig skill to work 100% of the time.

How in the world will I stop Kobe Bryant if he has Shot Creator, Dead Eye, and Heat Retention all activated at the same time? I like that we cant just rely on timeouts just to cool somebody off.

well, if we're being technical, kg was a great communicator and defensive anchor in minnesota, but the results weren't nearly as drastically successful until boston. it was a perfect storm, but he was the physical lynchpin of rivers and thibodeau's system.

this is a great start.

I can get behind the idea, but i think ots incomplete without there being attribute minimums to qualify for the more tangible signature skills.

i think that's what 2k wants you to finally worry about. just like in real life, when kobe is in a zone, you essentially defend him perfectly and still play the percentages and hope he misses.

there are, in a way, they just didn't say it outright. the guys who are "dimers" are all guys with high pass ratings, anyway. they didn't say it outright, but it's not like a guy with 72 pass rating is going to have that skill, because that makes no sense.

Tyson Chandler didn't do jack except hold down the paint. I didn't see Steve Novak or Jeremy Lin playing better defense by virtue of Chandler being on the floor.

So does a great perimeter defender. Why can't we have that?
Kinda late

That could play to many people's benefits.

You know there are plenty of novice players who just pop the game in and hop on without reading anything prior to release. They'll hop into a game and try doing the same thing they did in 2K12, or just seeing their Signature Skills and thinking they'll automatically work no matter what to do.

Easy wins for us!
