I finally had a chance to play and I am very impressed so far. I did not play alot of NHL 11 or 12 but did play enough to feel a major difference in the feel of this year's game. Saw some really cool moments playing last night that got me as excited as when I first played 09.

I absolutely love the new True Broadcast Cam. First day buy for me. Also the first time in a while I have not felt blah about the newest additions of my two favorite EA titles - NHL & Madden. On the right track boys.

Looking like a Day 1 purchase for me.

And really starting to notice how much the new free limbs or whatever has really opened up so many different animations for the goalies. And like a few others, I'm having a heck of a time scoring. Getting under control down deep to get a real quality shot on goal is a real decent challenge for me on AS/HC. And yep...the goalies seem very solid this year, imo. I'm going to need some serious practice time before starting my GM mode!
I can score on Phoenix pretty much each time I play the moments thing. It's tough playing as either LA or NJ and trying to score on those two great goalies in the play now mode.

Not a hockey guy at all.I downloaded the demo last night and this game truly got my attention. The broadcast type of feel to the game really stood out and had a blast playing it.

What worked for me was more or less letting off the left stick and gliding, then checking the player. When I was skating along and would go to hit someone nothing was really happening. Hip checks are also your friend in this game I've discovered.

You can easily see the difference in skating and the way goalies play. Everything looks cleaner and better graphics wise as well.

BUT did not even take three tries with the demo before I got the freeze where the camera pans down the ice to the other end and locks up.

I have season ticket so I'll be playing NHL 13 a lot for three days, I really need to see different teams play with different styles or I'll just stick with 12.

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it a try! I've had so many goals allowed just because of stuff like this.

Why no Brodeur scorpion save ;|?

Seriously though Brodeur has a unique style and it should be replicated. Haven't come across Marty giving up rebounds and quick not in the time I have had. Or is that just me?

I finally had the chance to get in 15 minutes with this demo (downloaded for both, but have only played the PS3 so far), so keep that in mind as I roll into the impressions:

-I really liked the feel of the new skating engine. The players have more weight to them, which was much-needed. It'll take a few games to un-learn some bad habits I've developed the past several years.

-CPU dumped the puck in several times (this was All-Star/Hardcore) which was a welcomed sight.

-The dumping of the puck was due to my players really playing tight to the blue line, so NJ really couldn't carry the puck into the offensive zone.

-It seems easier to actually set up shop behind the goal and look for cutters in front of the net.

-AI teammates seem to move around more to get themselves free in the offensive zone instead of just staying in one spot.

-The real-time presentation post-whistle is great; those old cut-scenes were past worn out.

-The lighting is impressive and it does indeed appear that the arenas have unique touches.

-Passing was still too accurate for my tastes, but I know I can fix that with sliders.

-Didn't see any penalties, but again, only played a couple of periods.

I'll close with this: the demos for the last 2 NHL games (11 and 12) really didn't sell me on the game and looking back, I probably could've just rolled with NHL 10 for those years and would've been content. The NHL 13 demo gives you a feel that indeed there have been significant changes to how you play the game, and how the AI will play the game. As an offline gamer, that is key to me. We'll see if the team strategies really work once we get the retail, but I have no reason to think otherwise, as I've seen the strategies first-hand with the few teams we have access to in the demo.

EXACTLY. I do the same thing, it's a huge part of my game, so I was kind of annoyed to see it gone, it's also very unrealistic. Maybe it's just been allocated to a different button or something??

I've probably played about 10 "games" (3 periods) worth on the demo and overall I am quite impressed. I just had a really cool play with a give and go 2-1 where a trailing player cross-checked the forward into the net as he was receiving the second pass. The puck went off his skate/shin pad and in the net before knocking the net off the moorings. The play was reviewed to determine if a kicking motion was called or not and possibly if the puck went in before the net came off. The commentary was focusing on a kicking motion. The play was upheld with a good goal as it should. Pretty cool play, review, and correct call.

Pros:
-skating engine: much needed improvement and brings a new level of realism to the game.
-active sticks: this makes playing defense and blocking the lanes a legitimate tactic as compared to taking the body 100% of the time as I used to. Major improvement IMO.
-Forechecking: seems to work much better with all the changes
-Goalie anticipation: cross crease is no longer goes in 100% of the time if executed properly. Much better at reading the play.

Cons:
-AI: still stands around a lot and doesn't help out in all situations. It appears to be improved but could be much better.
-Goalie: Overall the goalies seem to be better but the reaction time is way to fast. In one game I had a double deflection on a 90+ MPH slapshot from the point and the goalie reacted to both. No way that is realistic. Hopefully this can be tuned out (e.g. lower reaction time).
-Quirky animation/physics: On a few occasions I had some players bounce of of checks like the didn't happen when I head them really lined up well and hit solidly. In addition, some odd warping/sliding across the ice with some contact. It's infrequent but kind of odd. Hopefully it's fixed in the full version.
-Slapping the puck: horrible control layout for this one. Hopefully I get used to it. At the moment I cannot pull it off consistently.

Also is it just me or is stick handling impossible this year? It's really hard to go in on a breakaway and deke, even with players with really good hands, it's like unrealistically difficult. The good thing is it makes you try and pick corners on snapshots more (which I do anyway), but the players with good hands should be a lot more apt to deking, they look like amateurs in the game trying to deke the goalie.

If you're going full speed with any player it's going to be harder to deke with momentum. Slowing down to a glide in those situations offers more control on stick handling.
I'll give those a whirl in a bit and report back. I don't think I trust the AI to be able to distinguish when is an appropriate time to one time a loose puck, so hopefully there's a button for it.

I think Mizz I've only played the moments thing a couple of times. And if I remember right I'm 1-1 with it. So I at least scored once on Smith. But I think it was set on Pro level.

Oh man ya!...I'm having a very tough time scoring in the Play now. I've been using All-Star/Superstar/hardcore with that. I'll kinda steal one I think from you Mizz..."I couldn't score in a $20 whore house." But of course my aiming suxs, and I still haven't learned to shoot while being under control. But I sure am having a blast trying!

hahahahah... shoot and shoot often! go into free skate and practice!

Okay, so I just went back and tried to one time slap a loose puck, and I could do it in free skate without too much of an issue, same as before, just hold the left trigger and pull back on the right stick and then let it fly. But in an actual game it was unresponsive. I have no idea why.

Did the demo get taken off live? I just looked and it's not there

Though I have seen some incredible goals none the less, and some crazy tender scrambles with the new limb control taking away goals that would have been definite tallies in years past.

I did score a beaut garbage goal a little while ago off a Jeff Carter shot that Brodeur got the blocker on, unfortunate for him that Bryce Salvador went to slap the puck out of the zone and it ended up coming off his blade awkwardly past a sprawling somersaulting tender and trickled in.

I've said in years past I thought the game was organic, but this year I think that's actually a true statement to make.
Very organic in deed, Real.

Even after playing the demo many times now, I'm still nearly in shock by just how much more organic '13' is. And loving it! And I'm thinking that's most likely one of my problems. I mean...I'm constantly screwing up on taking the correct angles to the puck/opposing players. Also constantly getting beat to the puck down deep by simply playing well...stupid. More angle/position mess ups. Just the way it should be. The game at least to me anyway, is so different...I'm struggling.

Granted...the AI doesn't seem quite as aggressive as many of us had hoped in making it tough to skate through center ice. But man...I sure lose the puck to the AI all over the place on AS/HC, if I fart around with the puck too long. Again...love that! I'm sure finding out if I play in a haphazard way, I get dominated. As Mizz suggested...practice, practice, etc... Ya, I need it!

I'm quickly losing the ability to be objective about this damn game. I'm just simply enjoying it too darn much!

Someone posted this.

That 1-3-1 tactic seems to work really well and the CPU AI looks so good.
