It really is crazy the difference in opinion and perception on this game. People were saying you couldn't play defense on this game and as soon as I picked it up I felt like this was the 1st year in a long time that I could actually control defense. The defensive play feels rock solid the defenders feel like they almost got rid of that ice skate feel. I love the way you can run down hill and fill the hole and get off blocks.

I just had my most enjoyable game (all-pro difficulty) by far, it had a couple of 'wow' moments in it. I was the 49ers against the Giants, after the first half I was down 7-3 but was receiving to start the second half.

My first drive went well, I drove down the field and scored a TD on a nice fade route to Davis and took the lead 10-3. After kicking off, the Giants started off with a couple of nice runs and then Eli threw a beautiful pass to Cruz down the sideline. I had two defenders in the area, the first one attempted a tackle but Cruz broke it, the defender then fell to the ground and the second defender fell over him allowing Cruz to jog into the end zone. Making the score 14-10 to the Giants.

Late in the 4th quarter with the score unchanged I managed to force a 4th down around halfway. The Giants set up to punt and FAKED IT! I was caught completely off guard and they converted for a first down. I have never had that happen to me in Madden before. Anyway they continued to run down the clock until I put a huge hit on Bradshaw and recovered a fumble. With less than one minute to go I had to score a TD to win. I drove down the field, conserving time with passes to the sideline and managed to get to about the Giants 40 with enough time for one last play. I took a shot down field to Moss and it was intercepted.

So in the end I lost 14-10, it was the most fun I have had playing Madden in years. I felt challenged, but not cheated and the game had some great moments. I can't wait for the full game to come out!

For what its worth, if you could enjoy Madden 12, you will absolutely love 13. I enjoyed 12, even knowing and acknowledging its faults, and 13 is an improvement on that. If, however, you wanted a totally different Madden experience, something akin to Madden and Backbreaker and NFL2K having some sort of amorphous love child, you most likely will be disappointed. I can see the problems that people are having with 13, but they are not that big a deal, on the field. I HATE the lighting, however. HATE. My more pressing concern is the new off field stuff that 13 adds.

Dropped passes need to be touched up and sometimes after a tackle, the ball carrier fall again awkwardly.

# 945 DrSmooth @ 08/15/12 10:53 AM
But I'm sure they will correct this prior to the release.

I will say I'm mixed on it. I say same ol madden, but there are new twists. Some moments make me go wow, other times I'm just bored out of my mind. I applaud them for laying a base for the game, even if its late in the series. I'll probably pass this year or wait until black Friday sales.
U refreshed my memory I did see it in the NCAA 13 demo

And you Took the words right put my mouth...I feel the same way

And the irony of the whole thing is that the feature many of us begged for the most is what is going to sink this game fast. The Physics Engine is just so unpolished its a distraction when playing the game. I cannot take the game seriously because there simply is no sense of realistic contact between players.

For one, they feel hollow and have no sense of physical bodies colliding.

They momentum is all just completely off at times. Players will be running full speed outside on sweeps and come to a full stop when a defender cuts them off at an agle and then it goes into this mini standstill physics struggle game that just looks completely off.

Players bounce weirdly off each other into different directions at times

I seen a few plays where the RB gets tripped up going over a low tackler but doesnt go down (good ea) but then freezes in that stumble animation and just glides about 3 yards past and over the tackler while in that frozen stumble stance as if he was one of those electric football magnets from back in the day! (bad EA!)

The whole lack of immersion on almost every single contact truley makes this feel like a completely unfinished product that needs several years...YEARS, not weeks of tweaking to address.

There are some tackles that look good but I honestly think the ratio is like 4 bad, weird or just off for every 1 that looks right.

And it doesnt just end there with the contact. RBs juke left and right awkwardly and unrealistically as if they have metal rods underneath them and someone is yanking them left or right during the juke with absolutely no sense of weight shifting or momentum change.

In my opinion, EA really went backwards...REALLY backwards with this years version. It lacks smooth fluid realistic and natural gameplay. I actually forced myself to finish 3 demo games just to convince myself that what I was seeing wasnt a mistake.......I actually rather go back and play Madden 10. Its much more grounded and feels better then this. Actually 09 does!

Its truely disappointing for me because I had such high stock that the new physics engine would shoot some much needed gameplay and dynamics into this game.....It Just doesnt! Its actually a big distraction for me.
I agree with what you said, there tackling is running into each other, fall down, tackled, it looks like pinball IMO, very little physical contact and running backs getting tackled by just a defender putting his arm on the RB and down he goes. I dont see tackling at all, more like the ball carrier hits a wall and falls down with the help of a defender around him. Call me not impressed with RTP at all, it needs to be cleaned up 10 fold. Man I hope the next set of consoles we truly get a great football game and not this same old stuff.

I'm sure others have had similar moments, and I've not looked at every post in here:

57 yard bomb to Randy Moss - he jumps to catch it - he's hit in mid air, does a freaking cartwheel, and he doesn't just land in the end zone...he lands like a real person would land in the endzone...he lands with bent knees and his arm/hand not holding the ball is stretched out to brace himself. Then, he didn't just "pop" up, either. He raised up "physically." He actually raised back up with the speed, effort and realism of physics.

I agree on the pinball aspects, though. I think this year we're going to see the RTP more in line with offensive tuning. Defensive tuning should be the refocus for 14 or if we're lucky, it's a primary patch this year.

Things are turning for the positive for me now. I'm starting to see things in the infinity engine that are complimenting the game. I had a nice 6 yard run by Gore where 3 of the ending yards were gained because he established balance with his hand on the ground. very nice looking.

I am also liking the commentary more. It's the type of commentary where you can turn its volume to where it's not too high and still hear it for a nice aesthetic. One thing they really improved on is the dead air that was in M12.

I still feel like Madden is far too twitchy. It's something that has always bothered me about the game and infinity doesn't really do much about it.

I'm playing on very-slow and I feel that's best for me. I'm looking forward to a better camera so that the players aren't so small looking.

I'm having a lot of fun with the demo so far. One thing that I noticed is that it looks like the Infinity Engine did nothing to help the challenge system. It looks like it's still a crap shoot but I have to see more to make a conclusion.

FYI:
This may be obvious but don't forget you can use a challenge if you want to see a replay of something that happened on the field. I caught lots of awesome (and sometimes crazy) things happening with a 2nd look.

That's a good thing about this demo it seems. Most of the problems I see, should be easy fixes.

I've played 1 rookie game and 2 All-Pro and I can honestly say it's a definite rent. All aspects of gameplay, presentation, features, have improved since Madden 10 which was the last one I thought was good enough to buy which was a mistake because of all the bugs like the constant rain games fiasco and the broken cpu A.I. dropping players from their roster every offseason it had no business releasing, etc...but this one seems fun enough to play and I'm curious as to how the CC plays out. Which we all know will have some serious gamebreaking glitches and bugs upon release but eh f**k it, I'll rent it for a few bucks. It is after all the only NFL game to play.

It just doesn't feel right when playing it because it still looks arcadish and extremely artificial. Player movements still look bad to me most of the time which consequently kills the atmosphere. The acclaimed new physics engine doesn't really make a difference compared to previous titles. Biggest improvement: Adding Phil Simms. Commentary has vastly improved.

After playing two demo games, a few questions come up:

Why do the Seahawks wear dirty looking, grayish uniforms that supposed to be white?

The seahawks have 3 new jersey colors; white, ash/grey and dark blue

Why do all players walk as if they have a bad arthritis in both knees?

Why are some cutscenes extremely choppy and uncoordinated?

Why do some receivers drop plenty of passes even though they were open, no defender interfered or hit them?
On All Madden, the sliders for the user are all set at 25

Why does the "EA" wipe appear numerous times but no replay will follow?
You might be too quick on the button presses post tackle

Why did EA create these nicely looking starting lineup graphics when there is no time to look at them closely, let alone reading the player's names, positions etc.?

CPU quarterbacks tend to throw unrealistic lob screen passes with little or no chance to get completed

All in all: It still plays like the first next-gen Madden and that's simply too little improvement in order to spend 60 bucks for this game...
Hope that clears up some of your concerns.

some people are just being too hard on the game right now. YES it still needs LOTS of work, but its like most of you don't even appreciate the things they've done to better the game. It seems like at this point people won't be happy until the entire game is fixed, but fixing a game like madden is going to take time. Tuning a physics engine is pretty damn hard, the presentation elements they added this year are pretty damn good, the commentary has vastly improved, total control passing is awesome, read and react still needs a little work but i'd say 75-80 percent of the time it works great. honestly the only game breaking thing for me in this game is the foot planting and player movement. I expected there to be bugs with the new engine, but the engine is far from terrible. Oh and another thing, people are complaining about the replays and cut scenes and things like that when its JUST A DEMO. For all we know, the physics engine could be tuned way better, the replays could be fixed, ect. Just continue to be patient. I have no problem with people disliking the game, but don't sit there and tell me that EA didn't make a step in the right direction. This is a FOUNDATION for them, not a Ceiling.

a couple more impressions:

trufant picked me off at their 10 yd. line and proceeded to house it. wouldn't have happened if the 2 skins that were giving chase didn't get their arms tangled and proceed to knock each other over. it looked really bad thanks to the physics. i can already see the infinity engine giving me fits.

moss bobbled what looked to be a sure touchdown. he caught it, got hit from behind, the ball popped out and he tried to hang on all the way to the ground. it looked amazing and very realistic.

griffin's dreads look horrible clipping through his helmet.

uni and field degradation are quite well done.

the progressive lighting isn't nearly as pronounced as ncaa this year.

loving the commentary. it gives a fresh feeling to the game and i think i'll keep it on this year. i am already getting sick of nance saying, "it's a pass all the way". and "3rd down all the way"? what the hell does that even mean?

# 956 Hooe @ 08/15/12 11:30 AM
Is it just me, or are the Seahawks and Redskins both playing in colored alternate jerseys? The Hawks' jerseys are definitely not road white (the Giants' road white jerseys when playing at San Francisco are much brighter), and the Seahawks' new alternate jersey is in-fact grey.

Might explain some of the apparent lighting issues.

# 957 jvaccaro @ 08/15/12 11:30 AM
The biggest issue I am having is that the jerseys look very dark, almost black, when the light source is from the endzone the camera is facing. Even the white SEA and red WAS jerseys are hard to tell apart because of this new shadow effect. M12 on PS3 didnt have this problem on my TV.

There also seemed to be a lot of injuries in my first two games.

I can't seem to get the defensive backs to strafe, swat, or intercept, however it seems easier to put the receiver in better pisition to make a catch.

Commentary is waaay better.

Pro and All-Pro, Very Slow, default sliders, xbox.

I have to say I am really enjoying this game and it really just comes down to this...it "feels" good. While all of the changes may have pros and cons to them and I could detail each of those out, on the whole each change improves the overall "feel".

A perfect example is the immersion factor which is much improved. While the replays feel unfinished and the default camera leaves me a little frustrated they are far outweighed by the leap in commentary, stat overlays, crowd noise and little touches. Overall I feel far more immersed...it feels right. Please do fix that default camera though as I have heard only negative reactions to it.

Another example is the new engine. I am frustrated to no end by the lack of momentum. I almost fear this is a conscious choice though. It reminds me of this giant debate in killzone where the aiming had this wonderful heavy, weighty feel and it was difficult to pull off shots. The community outcry was deafening and they patched it so it was really fast to move and...well, like every other shooter. I am guessing it is similar with Madden. I would love it to be HARD to run, HARD to shift left and right...and really "realistic". I bet the majority of players would cry foul if direction shifts were heavily momentum based and we would hear "everyone runs like they are stuck in mud". You probably can't please everyone but I sure wish there was a slider that would allow me to increase the momentum factor. It really shouldnt be difficult to add...literally decrease speed on directional changes and make it a slider value. The more you increase the momentum slider the less speed you would have for a few moments.

Again, while I sound like I am complaining I actually think the engine "feels" better, more organic and leads to more "wow" moments. I don't get too hung up on little odd glitches, it is a game. At the end of the day I feel better playing this engine than the previous versions.

It is the entire package that just feels more organic, more alive and more immersive. It has been a while since I felt that in a Madden game so the experience far outweighs the annoyances. While I won't declare it the greatest thing since sliced bread I will be purchasing based on the demo. Any improvements in the final product (camera please) and subsequent patches will only validate that decision.

I have to agree with CoRRuPTMiND93 here because although I hate to admit it, this game does "feel" good to play especially on very slow, movement doesn't have that turn on a dime feeling that has infuriated me to no end. And don't get me wrong folks I HATE EAs Madden franchise as a whole with a white hot passion but this game is dare I say....decent?. And as much as I love 2Ksports games, those ALWAYS need serious gameplay patches every year as well.
