NASCAR The Game 2011 News Post

I received the game this morning at 9 AM. Please keep in mind, I have only raced 4 times so far and practiced at another.

I am going to answer as many questions as I can that have already been asked, then will keep posting impressions and answer as many questions as I can. I have my PS3 in my office hooked up to the same monitor as my PC, so I have to switch over, so If I don't immediately respond to something, it's because I am on the PS3.

On to the questions, from the other topic.

I wanna know how are the Graphics compared to NASCAR 09? I really can't get a good grasp from the videos. Thanks.

IMO the graphics are a bit better than NASCAR 09. NASCAR 09 was a nice looking game, but I think NTG11 does a better job here. There is a very natural, organic look to it, almost like MLB The Show has. The color palate is there, but it's not too crisp, or overdone.

The car models are nicely executed, and tracks look beautiful.

1. I think we are all wondering about the difficulty of the game and if what we saw in the videos was on some easier level. Is the game more realistic than what the videos may have lead us to believe?

2. Is there a true career mode, or is it just a season, and how does that work?

3. Do you get the sense that you are at 30+ different tracks, or does it feel like most of the tracks run about the same?

1. I set the difficulty for the AI on the highest at Tally, Daytona, and Texas. They were very competitive at Tally and Daytona, and Texas were just better than me....flat out! What I really like so far about the AI, is that they are aggressive, but not cheap. They understand that you are also on the track, and try to be cautious of their surroundings. They did bump draft with me at Tally and Daytona, and I could do the same with them...and there was no sign of them being disturbed by it.

2. Have not jumped into career mode as of yet, but will give it a run as the day progresses.

3. There was a nice difference in the feel from Atlanta, Texas, Daytona and Tally. They didn't feel that same at all, and based off early impressions, they did a nice job trying to individualize and realistically replicate each track.

Pre-race presentation-Is there a full pace lap with the driver/grid position rundown like EA did a few years back? Very tv-style touch that was very nice. Also, any featured drivers pre-race?

Wreck/caution-how long is it between the wreck, caution and going into the pace lap? Time enough to 'go thru' the wreck if it happened up in front and you're in the back of the pack, or just 'there's a wreck' and then two seconds later in the caution lap?

Keep in mind, I have not done season or career, but in "race now" option, there was no pre-race or any presentation. It literally took you to the race about 100 yards away from the start finish line.

In regards to wrecking, you get to watch the whole wreck. It doesn't take you away to a cut scene instantly. I was in one at Tally, and it seemed like it lasted 20 seconds, and I was in one at Texas, and it only lasted about 10 seconds. Then it gives you the option to pit under caution...if you choose no, it takes to a few seconds before the green flag drops again.

I am very curious about the realism of the track surface. For example, Are there bumps in on the lowside of turns 1 and 2 at Las Vegas? Do the bumps upset the car and make you create a setup that can handle those bumps?

That leads to my other question. How much does messing with the setup actually change the feel of the car? When the track rubbers up, does the car get tighter?

From what I have seen, the bumps feel like they are barely noticeable. I felt a little bit at Daytona in turns 3 going into 4(keep in mind its still Daytona 10 on my copy) but nothing that really forced me to white knuckle the wheel at all. When an AI car gets into you, you notice that a lot more than any bumps on the track surface. If you're hoping to really feel the surface bumps and have it effect the car....probably not going to be real happy.

I will say the the driving model is really well done though, and you truly feel connected to the track surface.

Ok, going to go test some more, and try to get some photos, but videos may be very difficult. I am trying to find a way to do it right now. I will be back in a few to answer some more questions and give some solid impressions.

Also, the online on this game can go screw itself. Whoever the clowns are that are playing and driving backwards and turning Bristol in to a demo derby can die in a fire for all I care. This is what's wrong with console online gaming. Everyone playing is a 5 year old moron that needs to be bitch slapped.
See this was the one thing that I brought to everyone's attention before the game was released. How they did not see this coming is beyond me.

So, I've been kind of watching this game, any word if they've changed to the new cars yet?

Since neither wins, they celebrate by taking parts of their car and selling it on Ebay. They fixed this by not allowing either one of them to remove any of the parts when and if they ever get to victory row.

Hope that helps clear up a few things.
You know, that gets me thinking, if I was designing the game I'd make it so that when you win with guys who never usually do try to burnout out or do doughnuts but are unable to them them properly no matter how hard you try. Little treasures like that would keep me coming back

Ok, I think it's pretty much official that Eutechnyx are the best developers EVER!
Patch 2 is all done and submitted. Looks like they sorted everything, and a bit more! Be interesting to see what effect, if any, these fixes have on the pitstop times. Regardless, what they've done in three weeks in fantastic. Credit to them.

Heres the full list.

Well, let's see the patch first and see the impact on the game firsthand. Nevertheless, the transparency that we have seen on the status of fixes has been awesome. If it fixes the problems, then Eutechnyx better make sure that the servers can handle all of the demand for online play!

No the difference is the new cars will come in the form of a download from Xbox Live Market or PSN's market.

The patch will automatically download when you sign on.

That fix list is awesome, I'm glad they are so committed, as long as this patch doesn't somehow break more things, I'll be buying the new iteration next year, especially when given time, they've shown that they want to improve this game.

I do hope though they do address the pit slow down issue. That's the last thing I need before I feel 100% content with this game. As it is now I hesitate to run longer races because of that.

# 1490 thekodinator @ 04/26/11 05:55 PM
well i wasn't sure if i was going to buy the game or not, but my wife went out and bought it for me and i must say... i am REALLY impressed with the gameplay.

The racing is really intense (and yes it's super easy on anything but 'very hard') and i'm literally white-knuckling it around the track whenever i'm in traffic. the gameplay is a LOT of fun. I'm really enjoying it so far.

I will say though that I am having a hard time driving smoothly around the track with the controller. i keep finding myself changing my car setups to very tight, or else im over-correcting all over the track, and I can't make it smoothly through any turns or stay straight on the straightaways... i struggle steering so much that i have a hard time even drafting consistently for any prolonged period of time. any help?

LOVE the game and can't wait for the 2nd patch and 2011 DLC.

Oh and one more thing- EFF all the hackers who brought down PSN.

I'm to the point where I almost hate this game. It's seriously flawed.

How am I and Jimmy Johnson four laps down at Talladega, there's a caution in which I pit, then on the restart Johnson is leading the race? Lol

Doesn't make sense and it's very frustrating to be cheated.

How is there going to be a caution, I'm a lap down, and just because of the caution I'm 2 laps down?

Man, eff this game. I wish I didn't buy it. It sucks.

# 1492 Candymandagreat @ 04/29/11 03:39 AM
I hate this game. Devs plz fix. How could they release this game in this state?

Maybe I just can't figure it out, but is there a way I can race online without my created driver?

Check the patch thread and read the number of things that have been/are being fixed. They seem to be doing a really good job with trying to fix things, and with the sheer number of fixes, it's not really that surprising that it is taking so long.

Again, check the patch thread. Ability to change online car is one of the things that will be added. So, in short, there is currently no way to change your online driver but this feature will be added.

It appears they learned nothing from the F1 debacle. They rushed a game out in the name of profits even after they delayed it allegedly for quality control reasons. Now much like F1 they've burned their core audience and will realize next year when everyone sits on the side lines waiting to buy because they don't want to be burned again.

# 1496 Perfect Zero @ 05/01/11 08:09 PM
I swear, the same people griping about the game being released as is are the same people that would have complained about the game if it was delayed another month. It's a good game that plays well. The patch is going through "quality control." What more do you want?

# 1497 bigdoc85 @ 05/01/11 10:23 PM
Heck, with PSN Network down, there's nothing that could be downloaded anyway.

I doubt they let a patch out for any game until they get these PSN issues resolved. If it is true that PSN was hacked into I doubt they want any extra online activity while resolving the issues.

Alot of you guys are making it sound like they got nothing right on this game and is even worse than EA's renditions which I dont agree with. Ive been playing since launch and though there is flaws to the game; to me the game is not that bad and could be a great game if they fix the issues via patch.

Right now you cant run long races without issues because of the caution glitches and AI pit road issues. The position scoring also appears to be an issue on the longer races with pitstops. The AI can also be frustrating on the lower difficulties because they often brake at peculiar spots(ex. middle of straightaway). Wheel issues are also a huge problem. I bought a G27 and have heard that the gears in the FFB wheels are burning out and destroying player's wheels when playing NTG11. Ive used the controller for now waiting for the patch hoping for a fix. Spinning onto Pit Road and getting a illegal pit entry is also frustrating. Slow qualifying times by the AI on harder difficulties is also an issue. All of these issues are unacceptable and Eutechnyx has made it clear that they are trying to address all of them in the next patch.

I commend Eutechnyx for admitting their mistakes and trying to fix them while keeping the community informed. Most developers dont do that in todays gaming industry. They got alot right with this game and that is a huge reason why Ive accepted the flaws for now and continue to play. Ive also been starved for a good NASCAR game on console for a long time now and see the potential that this game has even with the flaws. The driving model is great IMO. It can be as easy or difficult as you want it to be with the range of assist settings. The sound and graphics are very good but I do see room for improvement. Not bad enough for me to see that is a flaw. The paint booth though very challenging is like a game within a game if your patient enough to get the hang of it and enjoy painting cars. The online connections for me have been fairly good. Cars wrecking at the start happens every 6-7 races. Its frustrating but Ive learned to avoid rooms with more than 8 cars for now. The most frustrating part for online comes from idiot racers who want to wreck everybody or drive backwards when they see they cant win.

Overall, Im really enjoying this game as is. The racing on this game is a blast. Ive even got my friend into the game by racing split screen who before this game has always poked fun at NASCAR. If they can fix the issues via patch I think this game could be a great 1st iteration of NASCAR from Eutechnyx.

Here's what Eutechnyx said:

Update on Patch #2 05/03/11
Currently the Xbox 360 patch is still in testing with Activision and we hope to have it submitted to Microsoft by this Friday 6th May. The reason for this is to ensure that the patch is released bug free and doesn't cause any other issues. Although this is probably not what you wanted to hear, it would be pointless to rush Patch #2 through testing only for us to then have to work on another patch due to this one not fixing what it was meant to.
NOTE: Submission normally takes up to 2 weeks

The PS3 patch is stuck in limbo at the moment due to the fact that PSN has been down since the patch was completed. Due to a large proportion of the fixes directly relating to the online aspect of the game, it's simply been impossible to fully test the PS3 patch. So at this time we have no news regarding the PS3 patch, besides it's been delayed.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but I think it's important that Patch #2 works and fixes issues without causing new problems.
