GoMadden has just posted this Madden NFL 11 video on strategy pad criticisms.
Quote:
"If there is one thing fans can’t complain about in regards to the strategy pad, it’s that Creative Director Ian Cummings hasn’t been listening. In fact, over the last few days he has communicated with fans and taken messages on Twitter at a rate we would probably be best not to imagine. While a blog detailing the changes is expected to come soon in an attempt to quell knee-jerk concerns, I think there are some fundamental deficiencies to the strategy pad that warrant at least an option for players to revert to the old style."
This is great. EA likes to talk about how they always listen to the fans. Well, the fans have spoken, we don't want this strategy pad. Hopefully this can be patched, I read something similar happened on Fight Night and that was patched, so no reason this can't be.
I would like to sign this petition (if there is one). The Strategy Pad is not as user friendly, or as deep as the pre-snap controls of years past. There should at least be an option to switch this back to Traditional controls. I like how they are handled in NCAA 11.
This really has become the main issue for Madden 11, and it's a legitimate concern, but I don't expect EA to admit to its poor design until later this year or maybe even until Madden 12. I can't see how you can patch it without effecting other game dynamics. It's not a take out and put in process.
In the long run, I think we'll see something along the lines of The Fonz with EA having a hard time admitting..."We were...wro....We were wrooooooooggg.....We were wrooonnnn..."
I agree with everything he said. This is why I only do simple adjustments with the strategy pad, like shifting Dline and LB's, pressing "pass" for Dlineman to get up the field, and press or move back in coverage. So, I never have to scroll through players on D for a hot route. So, my hand starts and ends on strategy pad until start of play. So, I go outisde then in I guess.
I am very critical of Madden but this year they put the work in under the hood. In fact this year I am in the hunt the buy the game early. Everyone including myself has complained about core issues like the running game and blocking both these issues have been addressed. In terms of franchise additions I think EA made a smart choice to put that off a year to focus on the gameplay. In fact based on the demo I am in the hunt to buy the game early.
I like the strategy pad I hope they do not change it.
Me too... I can learn to adapt pretty quickly and easily without much trouble. However, I realize that everyone is different and everyone has their own likes and dislikes. With that said, I'm always up for more options. Because the more options a game has the more people it can please. So if there is a way it patch in then I'm all for it.

i think that is the most likely outcome. they arent going to change anything or admit the system may be less efficient before the game even hits shelves. nor would i expect a patch within the first 3 or 4 months as they dont want any bad press. mostly likely it will just be ian on twitter continuing to say stuff like get used to it or give it a chance or its not bad.
it will go the way of other stuff. like "rewind" which was hyped to no end, and now is not part of the game...
like madden IQ, which was hyped, now not a core part of the game.
etc... strat pad was just another back of the box thing... next year they likely change it and pretend it didnt happen.

i agree and i LOVE that they did this. i love that they just really worked on gameplay and the result is GREAT gameplay. my issue is i cant enjoy or appreciate the gameplay because of what to me is a poor user interface and input system...
for me, strat pad is a deal breaker. it makes me not want to play. everyday i come home, try and play a few games on the demo, and stop at halftime. im sure some will liek strat pad, for me not so much
you could have the greatest game fo all time, but if the contorls and how you input stuff is painful, its not going to be enjoyable.
why cant we have a choice of configurations? madden 2001 i can choose from 4 or 5 sets of controls. why not in madden 10
This video is what we need more of, intelligent and rational discussion of disagreement with EA over a design choice. And the thread I created about people not buying Madden 11 due to this strategy pad should also concern them in regards to the lost sales issue.
This video also confirms what I thought, that the game would work much better on the PS3. I hope EA can man up, admit they made a mistake and patch this as they did Fight Night. If nothing else, it definitely needs removed for Madden 12. Once it's gone we shall all never speak of it again.
Interesting video, and I think it has a valid point with regard to the ergonomics of using the Strategy Pad, particularly on the 360. Could explain the "clunky" complaints (which I echo).
I don't mind the intention of the Strategy Pad, but the DPad on the 360 is just really not a good control option. I think this video demonstrates that effectively.

Yeah they should have made it and option but I actually like the new system, but options are good.
This is also A really good reason why the exclusive deal is killing the genre.
If there was no deal then Madden could be Madden. Other companies could take more risks etc and if it were things that worked out great, then the Madden fans could start asking EA to replicate it etc...
As it stands right now Madden is Madden.. You here it all the time "It plays like Madden"...People are so used to the control scheme and gameplay that any major changes are going to ignite the flames and youtube vids.
A lot of people say Madden is stale and needs shook up but that's only if things don't change, IMO.
I started a thread so people could actually suggest what exactly they'd like to see upgraded and how'd they like to see it implemented...etc, since auto speed burst and strategy pad are widely hated.
... One post other than my own.
That just begs the question. Do people really want Madden to change or is it just the cool thing to say these days?
Who knows. I'm just going to do what I always do. Buy the video game and play and have fun with the video game.
