It's just not fluid. Maybe Chase or someone who has played the game live can say if it's a vid problem or if we are seeing it right.... It's still not gonna turn me off, but it's weird...
I do know their hockey last year had the same very issue with animations speeding up and not syncing right. Lets hope this is a video thing and not a game thing. But every year it never is a video thing even though we hope it is.

This game is looking pretty good after this video. It's only one though so I'm going to need more. The one thing I really wanted was the CPU hitting a fly ball to the outfield to see how the user players catch the ball as in frame rate slow down and such. Graphics are a whole lot better than what most people thought I'm pretty sure. I gotta watch it a couple more times to look at stuff a little more in depth.

For people saying they don't dig the batting camera, its fixable by changing the camera settings. I liked the view for the video though because it really showed off Wrigley. It's amazing how good Wrigley and the colors looked. I thought the fans were fairly active to. When A-Ram stepped to the plate with the bases chucked the fans got into it. It will be really nice once MLB Today takes in effect to the commentary because the stuff that was in the video was pretty much all from last year. Nothing really sounded new except for Kruk.

The numbers look kind of awkward on the jerseys.. could have been the video..

Hopefully the video is also why it looks really choppy to me...

Love seeing a walk.. Perez does throw wild, just like real life.

I really like the low batting view..

Stadiums and graphics look very vibrant.. presentation looks great..

Overall.. I'm excited to see the demo.

Anyone else notice the announcers saying inning ending double play, but it was zero outs and the run scored?

And remember dynamic commentary.

I just wasn't sure if I heard it correctly. It confused me at first the way the action played out.

I just wish since baseball is about details and little things, they were more attentive to the uniform numbers and lettering. They are ll the same on every uniform. How are they not using the ones that were in 2K7, it is the same engine.

looking pretty good. It has a good ballpark atmosphere, commentary sounds like a tv broadcast, graphics are solid, animations are solid. I did notice on the replay of when the 3rd run was scored, the crowd reaction was way late.

This game is definately a HUGE step from 2K9.
Holy cow, I mean it picks up where 2K7 left off. Lets face it, they are not beating sony's game this year because basically they lost a couple of years really developing the game. They are still a couple of years behind.
But I personally think that those people who have xboxes will not really be dissapointed. I guess anything's better than 2K9 but this years game, aside from the jersey numbers, looks awesome!

Graphics look great, lighting, animations, presentation, that new batting IMO looks great.

Honestly, those of you who were dissapointed with last year's iteration, you have to be excited but what you're seeing so far this year.

# 69 SeerMagicX @ 02/18/10 11:55 PM
looks like it has the same game breaking problem IMO that last years game had. The outfielders play way to deep, and like last year, you can probably never hit a ball over an outfielders head. That's unacceptable.

I mean look when Fokodome is up. The center fielder is playing a few steps away from the warning track.

In fact, Visual Concepts completely rebuilt the graphics engine from scratch for 2K9. They did use some old animations from Kush Games, but the graphics being powered was completely designed by Visual Concepts. This is standard to all of their games as they did the same thing for NHL2K as well.
I find this hard to believe. Have any proof of this?

The engine is the same every year, just tweaked and Frankenstein one way or another.

There is no way they built a new engine from scratch, but all the existing animations from years ago, and graphical quirks from years ago are still there. Especially when it looks the same, only texture and light issues every other year.

I don't know what to say. I honestly don't get some of the "miles ahead" or "huge improvement" comments. There are certainly aspects that improvement is noticeable, but many that also look just the same and some aspects that seem to actually be worse than 2K9. I'm hesitant to say I'm disappointed, for fear of coming off as dramatic as some of the praise is to me. I'll just say that I'm somewhat underwhelmed with what I saw.

Pros: Some of the base animations look better. Running in particular looked much more fluid overall and less robotic. Very happy with that.

-Stadium looks much less "cartoony" and better overall. First impression of Wrigley was VERY positive. BIG improvement for me here.

-Lighting looks much improved. I think this is why so many people think the player models are much better. It really helps certain things "pop."

-While not perfect, the fielding seemed less jerky than 2K9. You can notice some of the newer animations in there.

Cons: The uniforms are embarrassingly bad. I'm no programmer, so I won't say "how hard can it be..." but I would like to think that professionals can at least be in the right ballpark (pun intended) with these. The numbers are hideous.

-Some of the same bad animations still showing up and transition animations still look disjointed.

-Crowd showed more duplicates in close proximity than 2K9, I think. I thought they did a solid job last year. This is VERY minor though.

-The commentary actually takes a hit with Kruk added...and it's not just because it's Kruk. He sounds canned like his audio was spliced in with the other two. It's obvious. This was something that 2K had over the competition-the flow of the commentary. It's still there with Phillips and Thorne, but Kruk really sounds thrown together. Not the end of the world as it's still quite good overall, but I don't see why they bothered, to be honest. It was (and still is) better without him).

These are all based on initial impressions without digging in deep. I don't see how so many people can weigh in with such confidence on the state of game play (on either end of the spectrum) as to me it's as much about feel as it is about visual. Visually, I'm unimpressed. We'll see on the "feel" part.

Nothing here really swayed me either way, which is unfortunate. I would like to think the improvements would shine through more than they did here. Hopefully the improvements to the AI, logic, mechanics, etc make for a solid game and that's were the improvements will shine. I guess the bright side is, I can work past all of the visual negatives (particularly on PC since I can actually fix some of them) if the game play turn out alright. No way to tell until I have my hands on the game.

didn't the MLB 10 trailer have the same problem?

it was a inning ending double play but they stood in the field still?

Yeah, and that was discussed there, this is 2K, not The Show.

I wasn't sure if I heard it correctly or not, that is why I mentioned it, the color commentary seemed confusing with the play by play.

The graphics engine apparently was rebuilt from ground up...at least according to simballer from VC who came by a few times last year. I don't see why he'd make it up (not saying you're implying that!) so I guess I'll take his word for it. I think the stadiums are good evidence of it though.

I would think the animations are a different animal and they admitted that they got virtually zero attention last year.

I do agree that it's odd that many of the same visual issues still occur, however.

I see. Still odd how it looks identical, with identical quirks, only textures and lighting seem to change. But the core look seems identical.

Anyone notice the field degredation?(dont know if it was mentioned b4)

I like what I saw and to top things off full customization has been brought back so that should help with the cosmetics this year.

The other game has field degredation and I think its real nice that vc got it in this year. Also is it just me or do the cubs cleats look like verderos?

As far as aethetic stuff and attention to detail maybe not. People are right about the numbers and letters not being sewn on and being too big. That's aethetic stuff though. The bat sounds are also the same like people are saying. We didn't see a whole lot there from an AI perspective either. I'm not saying that stuff doesn't add up either and isn't important. You can end up witha very nice looking game that ends up being fairly shallow that way. I do think they did overhaul a lot of the big things though.
Yeah, I can agree with most of this. I forgot to mention the lighting in my "Pros" (I'll fix that!) it is clearly improved.

Player models look about the same to me. That's not bad (aside from the monster legs...lol...but that's extremely minor to me), just not improved IMO.

As for the AI/Gameplay vs visuals, I agree. That's why I said I can't really know much until I get my hands on the game. I guess I was just hoping it would shine through more when watching than it did for me. As I said, I can easily get past pretty much my entire "con" list if the nuts and bolts equal good baseball.

I agree. I only know this because I didn't believe it when I was told last year...lol. Simballer (he's on the NBA 2K10 dev team primarily) gave some info about it though and confirmed it.

I also wished I kept his PM answering my question about animations and such...he kind of explained how certain issues might have carried over with the new build. He made it sound like the core of the 2K series was sort of built really haphazardly...lol.

They didn't completely scrap the game. It's 2k, no matter what they do there are going to be similarities unless they erase the game and start from scratch. They rebuilt certain aspects of it. From the ground up in a lot of ways. The player models themselves are completely revamped and brought up to speed with their other titles. I dont knwo what they are using but the technology to animate is definately different as far as their models. It's a different skeletona nd they can pull strings on a lot more aspects of that skeleton as far as facial movement etc.. Revamping is probably a better term. The stadiums are also completely reworked. Physics is one thing. MY concern is the underlying AI wasn't touched as much. They also from the looks of it didn't revamp the fielding and baserunning so much.

From the looks of taht video there still appear to be issues with how IE is integrated as well as player ratings and tendencies not being balanced correctly. They also from the looks of it didn't revamp the fielding and baserunning so much. It's lacking polish underneath and also from an aethetic standpoint. This is the difference between a good game and a great one.
Thanks for the explanation, that makes more sense. I was thinking of it as this way as well.

I think a lot of the inconsistencies with animations are just the new ones not really syncing right with the old ones that are still there. Over time hopefully this will be remedied when they add more of their own new ones, and remove the old ones.
