These are some of my favorite threads every year because we all get to debate on why so and so is rated this and that. It's all arbitrary and opinions when you think about it though (which is why I enjoy these threads so much), but for the sake of understanding I'm game lets dig a little deeper.

The Cardinals batting being ranked 20th in the game, but before I talk about their rating let me shed some light on how the game determines this.

1. It's an avg. of your starters and your bench and that's for your starting pitching and lineup. Kolbe gave me a number around 60% to 40% with your starters making up 60% of that rating.

2. Player ratings are not done by human hands its all done by a program that looks at the players past three years with the most recent year weighing in the highest.

Now that we have that out the way back to the Cardinals and this 20th batting ranking which made me scratch my head a little when I first saw it. As most of you and I'm guilty of this myself I think Pujols and Holliday that has to at least make them better than 20th. Not so fast

The Mets are ranked 15th a good 5 spots ahead of them I've uploaded some images to help make this easier.

If you notice the Cardinals bench is relatively weak compared to the Mets. This is a very important factor in the Cardinals current 20th batting rating. For the sake of science I swaped F.Tatis for S.Robinson on these two teams and their batting rankings changed. This one player swap propelled the Cardinals to 13th overall in batting and dropped the Mets to 21st in batting. What you have to remember is your starting lineup is only half of the story (about 60% give or take) you have to take into consideration your bench and your bullpen for pitching. Hope this helps.

Discuss.

Agreed. There are a few that could be argued but overall they are good, I can't wait to play this game!

Forgive me as I did not play the Show last year (looking forward to playing it this year for the first time since 06... as I buy a PS3 for it this year), but is this algorithmically-driven ratings system new this year or has it been in the game before?

why are the A's and Dodgers better in pitching rating than the Giants?

I have no idea how the White Sox pitching is not in the top 3. I'll take Peavy, Buehrle, Floyd, and Danks over any rotation in baseball except for Boston.

Bullpen plays a big part as well.

People have to separate themselves from the starting lineups and rotations, and remember a thing called bullpens and benches that account for ratings as well.

I think the Sox bullpen is underated as well. Jenks, Thornton (Best left handed reliever in baseball), Putz, and Pena make for a solid bullpen.

I will. But if everyone took this point of view this thread would be maybe 2 pages. The point of this thread is for people to discuss the ratings and that's what I was doing.

With noticeable bias I might add.

No shame, just it is obvious you would feel this way so heavily.

I am very proud of my biases. Although I do try to keep them at a minimum.

Tigers at 24th seems a little low to me. I would probably have them somewhere around 15th . I think they are going to struggle a little bit to score runs given the questions marks at the one and two spots in the order. That being said, I disagree that they will be the 2nd worst offense in baseball which they are according to these ratings and their pitching rating seems a little low to me as well. Verlander is obviously a very good pitcher, Porcella looks like a star in the making and had a very good rookie season and Scherzer looks like another very good young pitcher and had a pretty good rookie season as well, . Adding Valverde is also an upgrade at the closer spot IMO and they got a couple nice bullpen pieces in the Granderson trade. Of course if Joel Zumaya stays healthy that will help the bullpen as well.

Oh well, no big deal as I like to go through and rerate the rosters for every team before I start a franchise anyways.

Mariners at 19th in pitching is something that jumps out to me as well, that doesn't seem quite right. A starting rotation with two aces and a what was one the best bullpens in the league last year doesn't seem it should be only 19th.
