MLB 2K10 News Post

2K Sports has just posted their Major League Baseball 2K10 MLB Developer Insight, focusing on art direction.

Quote:
"We went through all the stadiums and scrutinized the architectural details and nuances, in an effort to correct anything we saw that has changed since the previous MLB season. We also introduced some new stadiums not in last year’s game. I’m sure you’ll all be excited to see the new Target Field in Minnesota. We worked off of the blueprints of the actual stadium so our stadium will be spot on in terms of accuracy for Twins fans.

We paid a lot of attention to the fields this year, introducing new technology to the dirt which better portrays wetness, degradation, moisture, rake, wear, and traffic. The grass is equally as sophisticated. We took into account the same lighting properties with our dirt, as well as the actual mow patterns for each stadium. We even went as far as taking into consideration the type & length of grass, and the direction it is mowed. I guess you can say we are a little obsessed with grass tech from our football days. We are sticklers for accuracy because we aim to please our simulation fans everywhere!

The environments capture each ballpark’s look and feel and showcase their specific celebrations, ads, scoreboards, and fans accordingly. We made sure to balance the ads within the parks and colors to mimic life, and you will see more real life advertisement slots and sizes than in MLB 2K9. In general, we wanted the environments to capture the real essence of baseball, but differently for the various stadiums across the league."

Game is looking really good so far from the pics. Hopefully it continues.

I'm not going to lie, those stadium shots kind of have me drooling!

Something about the crowd looks weird in the outfield compared to how good they look in the infield, though. Do they change to 2D or go a completely lower resolution or something, or is it just because they are very far away? Perhaps they had to do something to keep the framerate stable.

Either way, the lighting looks pretty sick! Hopefully 2K is back, competitively speaking.

Still not feeling the gloves or faces, but everything else does indeed look improved, especially the stadiums. Lets hope all the stadiums look as good as the ones shown here, because they looked amazing! VERY impressed with the improvements there, as some of them (like the Nats park...which looks awesome now!) looked way off.

I said last year that if VC put their pedigree to work for the MLB series, good things could happen. It looks like we are getting a glimpse of some of that in the art department. Out of everything we've seen/read for 2K10, this is the one thing that has me looking forward to seeing what's next. Very happy with this insight. I hope the following ones are as detailed and as promising. Well done!

Stadiums look flat out amazing!!

And am I the only one that thinks the comparison pics of Pujols are flip-flopped? He looks better in the 2k9 pic vs the 2k10 pic, but he's the only one. I swear they are flipped.

Looking good. Now to see the animations.

I thought the same thing with the pujols picture. Then when I read they re-did a bunch of player head-shots I realized though he looks good in 2k9 his head/face is too small & now looks much more realistic for 2k10

And here comes the hype!

Very, very impressive first outing for MLB 2k10. Player models and such look a little rough around the edges close up (face models still look ehh), but if the game looks as impressive in motion as those still shots of the stadium do, sign me up!

Now just need much more signature animation information!.... And some AI tidbits, because if the batters still swing at almost everything near the zone, this shows over before anything even gets started. I sure hope the batter/pitcher AI was completely scrapped and reworked from the ground up for 2K10.

As it is now though, I can't wait to see more. Bring it on
I'm very impressed with those screens, but until I know for sure that the pitcher/batter duel has been sorted I'll still be apprehensive.

Some powerful tendency sliders wouldn't go astray...

Now like everyone else, I want more info! Great job baiting the hook so far 2K.

just that the pic on the left looks cleaner.

In any event, the graphics are looking good this year. Hopefully the gameplay and animations follow suit.

The only thing that seems unsettling to me is that the pics that are being released and the ones in this write-up do not appear to come from the same vein. I really hope there is no bait and switch going on here.

Oh 2k.. why do you do this to me?

I can't stop looking at those stadiums.. I really want to see Busch!

# 78 Pared @ 01/16/10 11:44 AM
That has never really been the case with games developed for the 2k Games moniker by VC.

Yeah i know me either. I also am in line with Pared and don't think that has ever really been in VC rep to do some sort of that.

I wonder if this is the case. I agree, the outfield looks different. Which brings out an interesting point. In 2K9, and previous versions, there was an awful slowdown that took place when a fly ball would enter the outfield. I wonder if they are rendering less in the out field stands to keep that slowdown from happening.
