MLB 10 News Post

DAY 2

First thing we did was play a FULL game when I arrived today. Russell would choose the Minnesota Twins and I chose the St. Louis Cardinals (No Holliday). After playing him yesterday for 5 innings and only seeing a run between us I knew we were going to be in for another pitcher's duel. Starting Pitcher Brad Penny (Cards) and his opposing pitcher(Slowery? - Not sure if it was him or Baker) would battle it out for 7 innings. In the 4th(thereabouts), Slowery would give up a lone solo HR to Bengie Molina. Molina got ahead in the count and hit a knee high curveball into the LF bleachers. This would be all the Cards would need. The Twins had a couple opportunities in the game but their biggest came in the bottom of the 7th when Span would lead off with a base hit. Mauer would come up and drive one DEEP to LF-CF to the track but it would be hauled in by Rasmus who had to run a long way and Span was caught by a hair as he was almost to third base. Penny was on top of his game with 8 K's. Penny's curveball was hitting the low strike zone early in the game but was falling out of the zone later and Russell wasn't able to lay off. Penny also threw inside fastballs for K's on a few occasions that locked the Twinkies out. The Twins next opportunity to score would be when Penny was taken out of the game. Ryan Franklin would be pulled with a runner on 1st and no outs in the 9th. Motte came in and slammed the door. The Cards other run came on a bases loaded 3-1 pitch by Pat Neshak (I swung too). Neshak was MASTERFUL. I couldn't figure out the submariner who was just plain hard for me to pick up the ball out of his hand. I believe Russell had 10 hits to my 8.

An outstanding game and Russell was a First Class Act taking the loss. I wouldn't have expected it any other way!

OBSERVATIONS:

There is no quick pitching!!! The pitcher cannot hit a button to speed up ONLY the batter!

Saw 2 fans at the same time down the RF line reaching over the wall near the ground trying to scoop foul ball.

PITCHING

The meter looks the same but somehow just feels better. It does seem to penalize you worse the more you miss the meter. But the good part about it is when you do hit the meter you are hitting your spot, near or very near where you wanted the ball to end up. When hitting pause you can observe each pitch and it will tell you near or very near or not.

Fireworks display after hometown HR are only if the team actually does it in real life (i.e. there wouldn't be any for the New York Yankees.

GRAPHICS

Now that I've seen the game again I conclude that they are close in comparison to last year's graphics. I'm used to ONLINE which isn't nearly as good as OFFLINE graphics. However, this isn't a bad thing as far as I'm concerned. It's still more immersive to me this year due to the LIGHTING. It's easier to see the ball too. The animations are so smooth and there are many many new ones. I think the game is drop dead gorgeous.

BROADCAST VIEW

This is for you to decide. You may or may not like it. Your choice. There were a couple times where we should of made plays on balls but for the most part its not too difficult and after some more practice maybe we both would of made those plays.

There were new stat overlays that I hadn't seen before. I really couldn't tell you what any one of them were because for the most part we sped through those. I do recall one about about average mph for both starting pitchers.

AUDIO

The last day of CES wasn't so busy and therefore we could hear it better this time as you'll see in the videos. The crowd is WAY more lively for the home team.

OTHER THINGS

The sign in MIN will be animated when the game is released. I know someone asked that question.

Saw the 3D version of the game and as Rman said it is pretty cool. Have no idea if it will play on current PS3 with firmware.

The video recorder I was using is 720P. Have no idea why the contrast was blooming in these videos. The color therefore isn't as good as my previously posted videos.

Videos ( Keep checking back here as video links will be posted here. Some are lengthy so the videos probably won't show up for at least another 40 minutes)

C'mon man, the drama isn't as big now.

Admit it - you were paid off in big bills.

Blzr. Are you talking about the mode where there is targets all over the field and over the wall where you tried to hit the ball to? I absolutely loved that mode and miss that the most from MVP '05.

Okay...that's two.

But I feel your pain.
I'm a manage only mode guy.
I gotta hope every year they keep it in the game.(thank God for Kolbe's dad liking manage only mode )

I would hope so but why get mad about the complaining of said stances? That is one of the points of getting a baseball game. To have correct stances and motions. Otherwise they would give everyone Generic 1 and the name Joe/Bob Young/Smith

Of course this is all in good fun. People tend to forget we can have some of that around here.

Oh haha you mean Triple Play 2001's Big League Challenge Extreme mode? Yeah, that was pretty funny. There was one when you were miniature-sized in a living room. "Oooh, he hit the keys!"

But no, I'm referring to All Star Baseball's Home Run Derby mode. ASB is the game with Thom Brennaman as the PBP announcer, and he has quite a few lines in HRD including the distance the ball traveled (kind of cooler that way instead of in text form). The way the camera really stayed and focused on where the ball landed, and the massive feel of the stadiums, made me play countless hours of Home Run Derby in that game. And I mean I would continually play in a stadium for hours on its own until I hit a destination target, then I would move onto the next stadium for another target. Do you know how many stadiums were in that game besides the 30 MLB stadiums? It was too fun. In fact, the only reason I don't pop it in anymore is because I don't have a system to play it on since my PS3 isn't backwards compatible.

Maybe if we turn the HR Celebration Camera on in this game, we may get some cool camera angles. Hopefully they just passed by the Broadcast camera option when sorting through the different types, because I'd love to see what that looks like.

No.. It was MVP mini-game I'm referring to.

I'll need to look into what you're referring to. I know there was the split-screen Home Run Derby game (forget what it was called), but I don't recall anything with targets.

You should really look into Triple Play, though. I need to see if I still own those PSX games or if they are in the PSN store, they were really fun to play.

For some reason I thought that was in the NCAA game, no? It was pretty fun trying to hit the moving cart though!

Make it 3!!! I have been clamoring for a Home Run Derby in this game since it came out on the ps3. With 2 kids and one on the way, I don't always get enough time to play so HRD is a nice, quick fix for me.

With that said, I have zero worries about the camera angle right now. If the only camera angle ends up being the one where you only follow the shadow of the ball, then I probably won't play it much but I have lived just fine without it for the past 3 years. If they have a better angle then all is good. One thing you can bank on though is that every year this game will get better and better and most likely HRD will be improved upon. If I have to wait one more year to fully enjoy it, so be it.

Either way, I had decided to skip baseball this year because of my lack of time to fully play it. But there are too many good things going on and I just won't be able to not get it.

I don't get why everyone uses lack of time as a reason for liking HR derby, we can save any franchise game at any point now! I think being able to save whenever is my favorite feature that has been added to this game (08 I think?). If I only have 20-30 minutes, can play a few innings save it and come back later that night; no biggie.

While I am glad that HR derby has been added, I highly doubt that I will play it any time that isn't All-Star break in my franchise.

Well, it depends on how well implemented it is. Like I just posted about playable minor leagues in 2K10, the developers may see it as they will limit the resources spent on expanding the feature because people won't play it that much, but I see it as I would play it more if they spent more resources on expanding the feature. Kind of a two-way street.

So if it's as is, I will still check it out because the high cam still allows for us to see some shots, but if there are included random angles or the broadcast camera, I will give it much more playing time.

As for the in-game save thing, when I load it back up I'm a lot less focused than I was when I started the game. It's like playing back-to-back games in your franchise, then taking a week off and going back into it. You'll forget who was hot, who was fatigued, who you haven't played recently, etc. Because of that, I only do game saves as a last resort.

Hey dmb - did the players walk in and out of the dugouts? I know I was wondering myself as well as a few others who have asked in a few other threads.

Thank you for all the information!

is there anyway we can get a option to turn off the player indicator under the players?....just for aesthetic reasons.

That would be cool. I remember ESPN MLB 2K5 had that option and I used it. I would turn it off, if implemented.

I didn't mean to suggest you were flown out there and treated like a high roller by SCEA. I was just going by what Russell said - that a very limited number of people would be allowed to take video. You said yourself you had to get approval to post the vids on youtube, so I assume there was also some sort of process (or invite) to get you in there with your camcorder and playing with Russ. And I do appreciate everything you did, awesome vids and info.

There's something you guys are missing. My feeling regarding home runs in '09 is that it's just anti-climatic. Let's suppose they can find a camera angle this year in Home Run Derby that really makes you stand up and say "YES!!!" when a home run is hit. Correct me if I'm wrong but can't this also be used in the main game as well? A custom cam that comes up when a dinger is hit would really add some pop to the game. Home runs are what it's all about, the greatest moment in baseball so I say spend a little time on this and get it right.

I agree.. Nothing is worse than hitting a HR at Fenway over the Monster and have the camera follow the shadow of the ball and then focus in on the wall. Kind of sucks. I am praying deep fly balls which stay in play, borderline HRs and no doubters will have a camera angle where we can see the flight of the ball
