Madden 2010 News Post

We're having some export problems today - the ball keeps showing up rotated 90 degrees in the guys hands. In the meantime, I can show one run style that was slightly adjusted by Simon...this one is still in progress but I figured people would like to see it and give feedback.

Thoughts?

Also to compare, I uploaded the sprinter style (that no one seems to like)...this is the 09 version so hopefully I'll have a comparison video of the new one soon once we sort out Simon's export problems.

The new one looks better, I think the arm not carrying the ball could be straighter though. Instead of angled less efficient motion, I mean you will see people run like that just less athletic types.

If it could blend from the M10 animation, and the M09 animation trigger only when in open space, that would be perfect.
The problem is that's the way most of the running style is in the game, and that's definitely not how you see runners running most of the time. On the AP video someone posted, there was only one run that I noticed where he pulled up straight like that and it was after he cleared the secondary and was on his way to the endzone with no chance of contact. I love the new direction of the new animation and hope they can add a little more hip movement, side to side with the feet. I really think a little side to side with the feet will help give the allusion of turning when going from left to right without having to add lean technology into the game.

The runner’s hips do not move vertically, they just stay at the same the level… that is why the players look they are floating. As the player moves throughout his run cycle the hips need move in order to account for player weight.

I'm really torn here, I want to say 10 looks better, because in ways it does, but at the same time he doesn't seem to be moving fast enough.

Ian, if you REALLY want to make it look better you have to add some variance in the swinging of the arms. The legs aren't as noticable, but the way the arms swing in the exact same way everytime is terrible. It ruins the animation for me. The arms need to vary slightly in position each time he swings them, very slightly. That would go along way to create that realism, and not take you out of the game.

New running animation >>>>>> Old running animation

But, like everyone has been saying: the new animation looks like he's working a bit too hard to get down the field, or as if he had some knee or back pain. I think it would look better if it were more of a mixture of both animations: 75% new, 25% old. Also there needs to be a sense of speed or urgency by watching him run: his feet need to be going faster.

The problem with the 09 animation was he was always in the sprint form no matter where he was running. You could run in any direction and he was in sprint form and this made him look robotic at all times. There was no other form of running animations.

The sprint form is very nice, but it should only kick in when you hit the speed burst button and he reaches his max speed, so it should be a gradual transformation .

I mentioned what was missing and that is when a player gets the ball and knows he has defenders coming. The runner is in a low position, and he does this so he will be able to cut and change direction easier, but once he sees that opening to go full sprint he will then go from being low to straighting up into a sprinters form for max speed.

They need to keep the sprinters form for when a player reaches his max speed, and have other running animations that showcase him in a lower position leaning forward, and when he jukes have that lean that they have when they juke. Now put all that together and you will hit the jackpot on running animations.

i think the 09 sprint animation is good for players like reggie bush he runs alot like that
also ian, is there anyway you can tell us if the dbs still carry the ball in one hand when they recover a fumble or intercept a pass?
that really needs to be adressed

# 128 Exonerated @ 05/02/09 12:58 AM
Yeah the loaf of bread carrying is quite ridiculous.

It would be ok, if when you tackled them they dropped the ball. But they have a vice grip with one hand.

Its quite ridiculous.

And even when you hitstick them, nothing happens to the ball.

yea its fine if ur breaking away or no one is near you but even ed reed tucks the ball away in traffic on 09 they run with both arms at their sides and the ball in one hand no matter if they are 50 yards away from another player or surrounded by linemen

# 131 Tengo Juego @ 05/02/09 01:11 AM
For a big ball carrier like a bigger RB or FB, TE, LB, this looks ok.

# 132 Eman5805 @ 05/02/09 01:17 AM
I like that first running style. Looks more organic. Could probably pass as the LB's running style with the ball. He really looks like James Harrison on that long run.

# 133 TreyIM2 @ 05/02/09 01:28 AM
I think that both styles actually fit. It all depends on the player running, level of fatigue, when a player is open field, yada. The 09 style running even looks better in that vid because it looks like you're using the Madden 10 engine to demonstrate the "old style". Maybe if I had better angle, I could see the runner's stride better to be fully sure.
But, anyway, Ian, u guys have to really study the games to see how different players run....
Oh, and I'm mad at u for having to come over to this site to get the latest instead of on your EA blog. Lol.

# 134 apexbronx @ 05/02/09 03:10 AM
Much better. Its looks like a big fast guy who's not that quick but fast in a straight line type of run style. Long strides for speed but may be bad in cornering.

More than one running style is needed. Let the differant run styles be according to a players quickness, agilty, weight and of course speed.

# 135 P-Dub @ 05/02/09 06:45 AM
Why not just use more than one running animation for different sizes and speeds of players?

# 136 Dawkins#20 @ 05/02/09 08:13 AM
Look at about 1.12 the run there looks similar to the new style. The new style is suited to breaking through traffic and building speed but as for sprinting no. In terms of top speed running 09 needs to be tweaked a bit but was better in terms of sprinting.

1:27 - Watch AD break away notice how even in his sprint his legs are not parallel to the ground when raised. His shoulders are driving which the 09 animation lacks. And his head is bopping forward to push. But definately agree with others, when in a sprint the animation should be more upright.

AP is a good example of running styles. The 10 animation should be used when running through traffic, then another one should be included as a transition to sprint where the BC is leaning forward and driving. When he reaches top speed then he is upright. Just watch that vid, some great examples.

Watch the run that starts at about 3:12, looks a bit like the 10 animation initially. Then at 3:15 he breaks a tackle and drives which is stage 2. By about 3:19 he has hit top speed and is now upright. These are the stages we need in this game. Make it happen Ian.

The new one seems very slow. I like the new animation but i think it fits more of a LB or TE speed, WRS should still keep madden 09 animation. Change the animations by character. Also if you decide to creat a player, we should be able to pick how they run. EA you guys are doing yall thing with this game. Throw every animation in. Lets make it happen this year.

# 138 RumbleCard @ 05/02/09 10:34 AM
Perhaps you guys want the illusion of speed that 09 offered but not the same animation. 09 looks fake and contrived. The knees go up too high and the player is too mechanical. Faster players should just appear to be faster in motion. The actual model movement is a huge step forward in the realistic department.

# 139 jbluck513 @ 05/02/09 10:43 AM
personally, i like the new way they look as they run. they look much more natural, but the thing i dont like is how fast they move. i mean dustin keller is a pretty fast tight end. i mean he is no cochery, but he does have some speed, so the way his feet churn should be much quicker. all of the faster tight ends' (keller, cooley, clarke, shockey, boss. etc) feet should move faster, cuz it does look like they are running really really slow. wide recievers feet should move like the video BORN4CORN put in. but other than that, the way they look is great.

# 140 eagles410 @ 05/02/09 10:46 AM
i ask you PLEASE, can you stop having linebackers chasing down running backa for the tackle. Im getting tired up ray lewis chasing down Westbrook once he gets around the edge. ITS UNREALISTIC!!!
