MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

to everybody having trouble with the pitching, I can't stress enough how important it is to READ THE TUTORIAL!!

I read through all 8 tips of the pitching tutorial and studied them for a second to let my brain process it before pitching and I only threw like 5% meatballs in my first game, a 14-inning game. I also got the achievement for throwing a superb pitch in my first game.

doubt a patch will fix the frame rate.

It's either Stadiums or Commentary (or both)

If it's stadiums why can't they just release an xbox live pack of downrezzed stadiums?

Well, just finished my first game. Overall Im happy with it and I know ill be playing it all summer, but right now I cant pitch at all. I lost my first game 13-0 giving up 24 hits and only getting 2 myself. I cant for the life of me keep the ball in the infield. Oh well I know ill get better with practice.

Framerate aside which as I play it seems to get better. The game is pretty good. My only problem is I get "rocked" by the AI on allstar. Maybe that is because I am the orioles and Jeremy Guthrie is my ace? haha. I just think it has to do with my pitchers being bad because I got the picthing down. It just seems like every single bad pitch I throw gets jacked out of the yard.

I have played only about 7 innings but still havent hit a HR with anyone on my team. Guess thats cause of the players though.

This game is challenging at allstar for me. I guess its just cause i am playing with a crappy team.

Unbelievable, WHAT COULD HAVE CHANGED? It wasn't even finished and it was running 60 fps on the PS3, now they put out the finished product and apparently it stutters like crazy. How did they miss that? Something is really messed up here.

I bought 2k6 and 2k7 pretty soon after they came out....but I think I'll wait for at least a demo on this.

The commentary is brought over to the minor league park because it's an MLB game I guess. So your best bet is to just turn the commentary off and see what happens.

Oh thanks for trying.

Well I guess I was trying to figure if it is the stadium or if it is the commentary causing the problems..You should be able to turn the commentary off in an option somewhere..

I feel like I'm @ work doing application debugging.. :\

Looks like its' the commentary

Gotta be honest. I know the framerate can be annoying, but this game is really fun on PS3.

Just finished a game against Tampa Bay playing with my Yankees.

-Pitching is awesome. I love it. It really emphasizes on making the best of your pitch. No more tapping a button for easy success. It is pretty much impossible to ever perfectly "gesture" a pitch, which to me will make this feature long lasting.

-Fielding is great. I love the throwing, the one throwing error I made was because I held the meter too long, making Jeter bounce the ball to first. I like the fly ball landing circle disappearing when going backwards as well.

-Hitting. I struggled a bit. Hit two solo HRs with Jeter and A-Rod, but didn't have much other success other than two singles by Duncan and double in the gap by Damon. I want to work the count but the computer is throwing too many strikes on all star. I plan on either adjusting sliders or moving up in difficulty.

There are fewer fans in the crowd - fewer polygons.

Which is why I would like to see a minor league stadium with MLB players and commentators..If it is the stadiums couldn't they release lower res stadiums in the future?

Ok, I'm just gonna throw this out there. This is a question for the hardcore baseball gamers:

I just bought 2K8. I'm looking at the box as I type this. I have been reading every post on here, and it seems like the only real problem is this whole framerate issue. Now, I only have a 360, and I love baseball (I also enjoyed 2K7 last year). I also refuse to buy a PS3 for one game. So, I guess my question is: Is this framerate issue bad enough for me to skip this game and buy Army of Two instead?

# 1017 bowlerguy92 @ 03/04/08 06:29 PM
My game so far has proved to be as stuttery as in a regular MLB stadium.

Amen, brotha.
I was getting killed until i finally paid attention to the tutorial.
I'm liking this pitching system more and more!

just picked it up, and played a few innings.

frame rate isn't THAT BAD, its being blown out of proportion. It is noticeable, nothing to freak out over though.

I concur that the framerate issue is Waaaaay overblown. It's the first day, people are excited and the "other" game is on point so the comparison's are being made. 1 hour in I wasn't thinking about the framerate.

My biggest gripe is that freakin PS3 owners are getting screwed and won't have custom soundtracks. THAT pisses me off. I knew I should have got the 360 version
