MLB 2K8 News Post

Matt Blumenthal had an opportunity to demo Major League Baseball 2K8 this afternoon. His official writeup of the event will be up later this week, but we wanted to get some quick thoughts up here for you guys.
  • This game looks beautiful, the player models have improved but the real leap is in the animations. The animations move silky smooth and there is no need to worry about herky jerky animations of the past anymore.
  • I'm impressed with how intuitive and fresh the analog controls are. The pitching takes a little time to get the hang of but the new mechanics add a whole new dimension to the pitching model.
  • The baseball cards feature is surprisingly cool, expect me to have more on that later on this week.
  • In-game saves are officially in the game this year.
  • Check swings don't seem to be a chore anymore. They are now accomplished by pulling back on the right analog stick - no more right trigger necessary.
  • Stadium-specific animations are in. The Yankee Roll Call was mentioned specifically.
  • There should be plenty of foul balls this year. I saw several in the few at-bats I played.
  • No spring training games this year.
  • I counted eight unlockable classic stadiums. I think more might be available by default as well.
  • No co-op play
  • You will have the option to make trades for CPU-controlled teams in franchise mode, but you won't be able to edit their rotations and lineups.
  • It was suggested to me that the demo is done and has been submitted. If that's the case, it's in Microsoft's hands now.
  • I will hit on a few of the big questions from the forum here.

I just bought 2K8. I'm looking at the box as I type this. I have been reading every post on here, and it seems like the only real problem is this whole framerate issue. Now, I only have a 360, and I love baseball (I also enjoyed 2K7 last year). I also refuse to buy a PS3 for one game. So, I guess my question is: Is this framerate issue bad enough for me to skip this game and buy Army of Two instead?
If you liked 2k7, you will like 2k8.

Very short snipit of my impressions:

The framerate issue is highly overblown IMO. Moved to 720, but kept the fielding camera to "pole" and everything seems pretty smooth. It was a bit choppy at first at 1080i, but the move down to 720 seemed to do the trick....for me at least.

New pitching system - Love it! Took me getting shelled a few times to go into the tutorial practice and force myselft to LEARN the system. Have all the pitches down pretty good now, except the slider for some reason. I'm not going back to the old system.

Hitting - My only gripe thus far. Not that I'm having trouble with it, just the relative ease to make contact. I started out on Legend and was making contact on almost every pitch...seriously! I even moved the contact slider down to 0 and was still making very good contact...almost too good for my liking. I'll hold judgement on this until I tweak sliders more.

I agree with a previous assessment of this game in that 07 actually looked better overall, but I'm pleased with my purchase of 08 nonetheless.

For those of you who have had problems with the framerate: How does it compare to mvp on the pc stutter problem when throwing from 1st to 3rd? About the same? worse?

Thanks

yeah me too. At first it felt a bit awkward and strange but the more I've played with it, the more I've come around and I really like it now. Seems accurate that not every pitch is the same whereas in certain other games you could hit the same point on a pin every time.

Can anyone who has actually played the game tell me if the gameplay is realistic? I found 2k7 to be very unrealistic with most runs being scored by home run. Thanks.

Got it 2 hours ago and I love this game. The pitching is amazing. My first game ended in me losing 3-2 to the Bo-Sox. I had a 1 run lead going into the 9th until Many took me deep for a 2 run shot.

Can anybody say if there are any minor league stadiums available for download yet?

Also can anybody tell me what Kosuke Fukudome's #s are or at least whoever is supposed to be Fukudome?

In all honesty, this is one of the best baseball games I've ever played. In terms of fun factor this game is going to pass MVP '05, I can already tell.

The pitching is so much fun, the hitting is vastly improved and I will stay with the swing stick and the fielding is damn near perfect - the best I've seen in a video game in terms of control and animations.

The criticisms of this game are absurd and I have no idea if they're from The Show fanboys or people who turned the game off after 10 minutes. As long as their are no major franchise glitches this is definitely going to be one of the best baseball games ever.

Aight. I'm gonna open it, play it, and throw out some impressions soon.

Yes, the game does infact play a much much better game of simulation baseball. Homeruns are dumbed own and so are scores.

Oh, and for anyone whining about the atmosphere...

I was just playing my boy, Yanks at Boston. It was 10-10 (yeah, we were still playing on pro and throwing a decent amount of meatballs) and Jeter was up with a man on third and two outs in the 9th. Papelbon on the hill and once the count got to 1-2 Fenway exploded - much, much better than anything in 2K7. I grounded out and Fenway got even louder.

This game is turning out way better than expected in terms of gameplay.

Good to hear, unfortunately 95% of this thread is littered with people who haven't played a game. I want to hear more feedback from people who have actually played the damn game.

Have you played the Show? Just curious.

I can't make up my mind to buy this game or not. I have never played 2K7, and my only other option for a baseball game is MVP 05 on the CPU.

Should I get this game or not?

Your impressions excite me. I may just bite the bullet and buy a 360. Hiding it from my wife will be the hard part.

I have it........and The Show as well.

This game pales in comparison.....if you have a 360, you have no choice, make lemonade out of lemons.

If you have a PS3, run do not walk away from this turd and get The Show 08.

I haven't played 08, I owned 06 on the PS2 and played 07 about twenty times on my boy's PS3.

The fastball pitch gesture is just impossible for me to do right! I can do curves and sliders no problem yet I can't do the simple fastball.

What am I doing wrong? I always get 50-58% on the gesture. Slowing it down slightly got me near 70 once, but I still can't get much better than that.

I can't pitch inside because I'm always hitting people. I've already gotten two pitches tossed.

Loving the game, btw.

I prefer the fielding, player models and pitching in 2K8. I also like the fact that I can save an exhibition game, unlike the Show.
