Some good stuff in here that I'm definitely going to take and apply to my own slider set. Cheers guys!

Can anybody give me an explanation of what each of the defense strength sliders mean? Gather, release, etc.

I'm always hesitant to mess with these because I don't really understand them. Does it literally mean how effective your defensive conest will be at each point during a shot?

Also, will these affect both gameplay and fouls called? If so, in what way?

Czar had a good break down video of this for 2K18 or 19. Basically it's like you said, if you think "shot prevention" is the more important part of defense, then you would turn up shot gather defense so that your defense during shot gathers is the more impactful part of the play. If you think your closeout on the shot should have more impact than the gather you would make shot release strength higher than gather defense. In my opinion, and I don't even think it's really an opinion more of a reality, the most important part of defense is prevention so in 2K19 I had Shot gather defense higher. Shot release defense is important but not MORE important, when you are running to close out on a shot or jumping to contest, it's a reactionary decision which basically means you are at the mercy of the offensive player and hopefully you can take away some of his daylight.

Turning Shot gather up in 2K19 opened up a few new animations for me. So that was cool. Personally I like the default slider values this year, it feels the way that it should in my opinion.

I disagree to a certain extent as I feel shot release defense impact is much more than gather. In 17, I had release higher than gather bcos I want to make sure if I really want to make an impact on defense, I'll jump to go for a block or vertically like Draymond Green for layup attempts. Simply hands raise (RS up) to me, is a lazy defense. Of cos, I committed more blocking fouls bcos the cpu does pump fake these days ... so guarding post players like LeMarcus Aldridge, ha, cant spam jump button.

Well, thats the beauty of sliders which can cater to individual needs/likes.
