2011 Season Super Bowl XLVI

COLTS TRIUMPH IN FIRST OT IN SUPER BOWL HISTORY

The Redskins history making season finally came to an end tonight, & in the most unlikely of ways. This Super Bowl was one of the more unique in history. The Colts were the first team to play the big game in their home field. That however had nothing to do with the outcome as it was a close one till the end. Payton Manning’s only touchdown pass of the game clinched the Colts 25-19 victory & their 2nd Super Bowl win in six years. This game had everything you could ask for in a Super Bowl. Superb defenses, big pass plays, & a late game tying drive. Who did these things however is a completely different story.

‘Skins quarterback Cam Newton was off to a shaky start. The pressure of being the first rookie QB to start a Super Bowl may of got to him a bit. He wasn’t able to make the big plays in the first quarter like normal. He threw his first interception of the game to Colts corner Kelvin Hayden midway through the 1st. It resulted in the first score of the game, a 2 yard goal line run by Joseph Addai . From here it looked like both Newton & Manning would not be able to find their rhythm. Each teams secondary looked well matched with the opposing teams offenses. Manning was in unfamiliar territory as he did not throw a touchdown at all the first half. Both teams traded field goals followed by a ’Skins punt that pinned the Colts at their own 1 yard line. Adam Carriker then sacked Manning in the end zone for a rare safety in the Super Bowl. Washington would then capitalize with another field goal to end the first half trailing 10-8.

The beginning of the second half saw Newton get his game going. The drive belonged to Larry Johnson however as he ran the ’Skins into the red zone. The drive did stall though & another field goal was made. Cam would once again begin to struggle, as he would be sacked 4 times in the second half & fail to hit some key completions to help break the game open for his team. The Colts Super Bowl vet Adam Vinatieri kept his team scoring with his three field goals to put the Colts in the lead 19-11 mid-way through the 4th quarter. The Washington defense kept the team in the game by making Payton Manning struggle as well. Despite throwing for nearly 300 yards he yet to score a TD. An incomplete pass intended for Reggie Wayne allowed the Redskins the ball with 2:10 left & down by 8. Cam Newton made a few quick completions to keep the clock moving and the team going downfield. He would begin to stall however and was quickly faced with 3rd and long with almost a minute left still in ’Skins territory. Newton would go on to heave a 69 yard bomb downfield that was caught by Chansi Stuckey, his only catch of the game. The Redskins were now in the red zone, but once again the offense stalled & it was 4th & goal at the 1. Newton called play action & dumped the ball off quickly to tight end Fred Davis for the touchdown. The two point conversion was still in question. It was solved with Newton coming out of shotgun to run the two points in & tie the game with 49 seconds left.

Payton Manning tried to pass the Colts into field goal range but time expired before he could get his team to mid-field. Thus the first overtime period in Super Bowl history had begun. The Redskins won the toss & elected to receive. After a good return from Ryan Broyles, Newton completed two passes to Chris Cooley to keep up the momentum from the last drive. It all came to a screeching halt as Newton overthrows Devin Thomas & gets picked off by Colts rookie corner Rashad Carmichael. Newton & the Redskin offense stood on the sidelines hopelessly as Payton Manning threw the game winning TD on 1st & goal to Reggie Wayne. Lucas Oil Stadium erupted as the home team Colts win the third Super Bowl in franchise history. For Manning his second & second Super Bowl MVP award. For Cam Newton, a heroic effort that came too short. For the Redskins disappointment, but still hope. No one expected them to make it this far with this group of players. With men like Cam Newton, Chris Cooley, Devin Thomas, Adam Carriker & Deangelo Hall leading this team for a wild ride. Many believe this will not be the last time the Redskins are at this point, with a championship just a heartbeat away.

'Skins Re-Sign Special Teams Coach Smith to 2 year deal

LANDOVER, MD--

Just days after their Super Bowl loss the Redskins wasted no time looking forward to next season. They already took care of their first order of business, resigning their speical teams coordinator Danny Smith to a two year contract.

Special teams played a huge part in the Redskins Super Bowl run last season. The teams numbers on kickoffs, punts, kick returns, and field goals saw a huge rise this year. Plus two speical teams players, kicker Graham Gano & kick returner Ryan Broyles, were voted to the Pro Bowl. Broyles personally credited Smith for helping him focus his returning skills which resulted in a record breaking 5 kickoff return TDs in his rookie year.

The move ensures the current Redskins coaching staff will remain intact through the 2013 season.

'Skins make big splash, trade Haynesworth to Panthers for Halfback Stewart

LANDOVER, MD--

In the biggest move in the offseason so far this year, the Redskins have traded their $100 million man Albert Haynesworth to Carolina in exchange for running back Jonathan Stewart. 'Skins back Jerious Norwood was also part of the deal to the Panthers.

"We needed to free up some money this year, and Carolina needed the same. We needed a durable back, Carolina needed a big pass rusher. I think this worked out for everyone." That was 'Skins GM Bruce Allen at Redskins Park just an hour after news broke of the trade. Haynesworths tenure at Washington comes to an end after major ups and downs. From complants against head coach Mike Shanahan to off the field issues.

For Haynesworth it's a fresh start, espeically after having some what off a comeback year last year. Washington in return gets a young running back in Stewart who has been behind DeAngelo Williams for most of his tenure in Carolina. He's had one 1000 yard season back in '09 and has proven reliable in his 4 years with the Panthers. Jerious Norwood was traded with Haynesworth after a year filled with injuries and questions of his toughness.

With money now freed up thanks to the trade, the Redskins can now focus on drafting Haynesworths replacement. As well as signing Stewart to a long term deal.
