Five New Additions For Madden NFL's Franchise Mode

If you’re a fan of Madden's franchise mode, then more than likely you have a list of items you would like to see added or tweaked -- most of us do. That list of items will obviously differ and vary widely depending on whom you ask because we all have different perspectives, likes and wants when it comes to our gaming utopia. For myself though, I have a pretty specific set of changes and additions that I feel would dramatically expand the Madden CFM experience, and add much needed depth and longevity.

Make Preseason Mean Something

As it is right now, the preseason in Madden is basically a waste of time for most, myself included. Sure, it’s fun to play with some of the newly signed free agents, and the rookies of course, but one can do that in Play Now mode or practice. What I would like to see added is the ability to have storylines and real position battles take place.

I mean if you’re going to label yourself as an NFL football simulation, than let’s try to do just that -- simulate the real NFL experience. Let us have practice scenarios where two wide receivers are battling for the final spot and have to prove themselves (or not) in a practice scenario mode. Or let's see how two linebackers can defend the pass or prove their tackling ability. I’m not asking for some wildly lengthy experience that would consume hours of our time, but simply a mode that allows us to see the pain and anguish that these players go through while battling to make a 53-man roster. If anything, let the user designate the players who are fighting for those positions, and put an emphasis on them and see how it plays out.

Full Defensive Assignment Ability

I know this has been mentioned by the developers, but please for the love of all that is holy, give the user the ability to fully control the defensive unit in game and out. If I want to make sure that Joe Haden, Richard Sherman or Darrelle Revis is constantly on the number one receiver, I should be able to do that. If I want to double team an opponent’s best wide out, I should be able to do that without having to manipulate the system in order to achieve that.

This is a basic necessity and need in order to play consistently good defense in the NFL, and it’s the same in the Madden franchise. Let’s be honest here, are you ever going to see a Darrin Walls or Brent Grimes line up against Calvin Johnson half the game? That answer would be no, unless you’re playing Madden of course.

Score Ticker

I know this seems like such a trivial item to add, but a large percentage of Madden users really want this to be part of Madden 17 CFM and beyond, and so do I. If we want to take it a bit further than just a score ticker with your CFM league scores scrolling at the bottom, how about a break in the game to show the scores from around the league, and how they may be impacting the user's team and its current playoff run?

If it’s Week 13 and I am a game out of the final Wild Card spot, and the same with two other teams, wouldn’t the immersion factor increase dramatically if I were aware of what’s going on elsewhere in the league? I understand this would really only work for an offline CFM, but it would still be a welcomed addition.

Presentation

While the overall presentation has improved with Madden 16, it still slacks behind Sony’s MLB: The Show, and far behind the NBA 2K franchise. If we're being honest with ourselves, I think after some time with the game, we start to press buttons to quickly navigate through the cutscenes and such. However, I feel like that happens because it’s boring and repetitive. The obvious “must have” is a pregame, halftime, and postgame show that has some guts to it and is dynamic enough that it makes us want to watch.

During pregame, I absolutely would watch players walking through the tunnel from the locker room, similar to what EA’s NHL franchise used to do. Halftime isn't bad, but there's still bugs and the visuals really need to be improved so better replay shots are used during the highlight reel. Also this would be a good time to take us quickly around the league.

Let’s not stop there though, either take the time to record a much larger spectrum of lines with Phil and Jim, or start over with a new group. The truth is that most sports commentary gets repetitive, but that is because the approach to it is often a secondary thought. The real answer here is to have at minimum two commentary teams, and much like NCAA Basketball 10 from EA, allow the user to choose between them. Lastly, I would like to see a pregame showcase of a player to watch that includes season stats, and maybe some highlights from prior games included.

Coaching Carousel

Since 2003 there has been a total of 83 new head coaches in the NFL, with only 14 of them having prior head coaching experience. I know you can fire coaches in Madden and hire them, but it is so arbitrary and has very little impact on the game. I would love to see a system where if you hire certain coordinators or prior head coaches, your team's strengths and weaknesses are actually impacted.

If I hire a Vic Fangio or Rod Marinelli, my defense should get a boost, right? If I am playing as a head coach running the team and get let go, I would love to have a chance to prove myself with another team either as a head coach or coordinator. A realistic coaching carousel is an absolute must in any football game, and the game would inch closer to a true sim if it were actually included and implemented correctly.

These are just a few ideas that I feel could help take Madden 17 to the next level, and trust me when I say there are many more. I am enjoying Madden 16 CFM with the improvements, but there is still a ways to go. I know the current development group seems to be very open to change and implementation, and let’s hope that trend continues. What changes or additions would you like to see in Maddens CFM going forward?

Formation subs in the CFM main menu is a must! Tired of watching starters play special teams. I want back up and rookies in there. With the low awareness of these players it may help open up the return game and blocking of kicks. We all know EA has blocking assignment issues.

Have specialty position (ie, KR/PR, LS, Holder, nickleback, dimeback) and /or second position such as a 3-4 LB can also be a 4-3 DE.

A good challenge system that let's you challenge what you want to challenge not what they tell you your challenging. Too many times I want to challenge possession of the ball but they challenge fumble.

Have realistic goals and progression results based. Have OL go by how many games they play. How many holds and false starts and how many sacks they allow not how many rushing yards they help get or passing yards.

Create our own draft classes these classes are okay but they are too repetitive.

Have the ratings and overall actually mean something.

Have a progression/regression that makes sense. A player gets smarter every year in the league and lose physical abilities but they are able to compensate for their inability with their smarts. So have a player get 2 attribute points for awareness and play recognition. After age like 26-27 start losing a point in speed, throwing power.
Also with the progression have a player say a rb who leads the league in carries with over 200 carries lose a little. Rb don't have long careers due to the heavy use. Make this realistic. Don't make them lose 9 speed points when they are 31 yes old they have 77 speed that's unrealistic.

It's funny. The position battles from this article were actually in like Madden 04. I hate how they remove features every year, add one new one and a couple of old ones and pretend it is a new game. For my money the franchise mode in Madden is the absolute worst. Here are my 5....

1- Truly dynamic ratings throughout the year. if I have a guy come off the bench and put up a huge game make him better than the starter going into next week. This sort of takes that "position battle" and heats it up throughout the season. Makes for QB controversy on teams.

2- Fix Depth chart/Subs. Let me split carries between two or 3 RB's... essentially on the depth chart let me select a % of 0-100 and that is the amount of snaps that player has there. Also, no clue why you can't have formation subs.

3- Connection with the rest of your league. Keep me up to date with scores, and stories from around the league. I'd place a ticker in the games, give updates in between quarters. And why not even add a daily fantasy element where you can pick players from other teams and see how you did. This allows you to stay informed around the league.

4- Presentation- Where to start? It is awful. Get rid of the EA Sports logos from everywhere (around the stadium as well). Make the games on CBS, or Fox, or ESPN, or NBA, or NFL network. I remember EA did a CBS ESPN hybrid on the last NCAA Basketball game they made. The game wasn't great but the presentation was great. You could really feel an added excitement for a big weekend game on CBS. I shouldn't have to look at 200 EA Sports logos every game. I get that you made the game, you have the ONLY football game.

5- Assistant Coaches/ Coaching Carousel. I really miss the days of Madden 06 when you could hire the OC from another team, or see a retired player move from Special teams coach to OC to head coach. The generic coaches are awful.

I'm sure I could add 20 more to this list, but this is a start.

*Bonus*
A weekly magazine or website mock up would be great. The old Sports Illustrated mag from NCAA games back in the day were fantastic.

I wish they would go back to the old 05, 06 or 07 version, where you had the tony Bruno radio show that kept you updated on what's going on in the league.

Players had roles, like franchise QB, where if they had one they wouldnt draft one or superstar RB, that was impossible to trade for.

Honestly I liked the training camp drills better than the game prep. there were position battles in preseason that tony would talk about.

All of these items would be great to make a come back.

Give us manual draft classes, nba 2k has it no reason madden can't.

Give us full access to all ratings, including development or potential. If I want to make Mariota a superstar potential let me do it. It's my game.

Practice Squad! I should be able to control the development of players that I feel are important but not worthy of a 53 man spot yet. I mean there are plenty of guys that won't be signed by another team if I cut them but then I can't develop them and their confidence takes a hit.

I shouldn't have to cut guys that I know are going to play for my team IRL this year but their virtual versions aren't quality enough yet to actually make my squad, because the reality is if I have to cut them even knowing their potential roles on the real life team they aren't coming back and their virtual versions will never develop into something remotely resembling they're real life counterparts.

This is especially disappointing when dealing with injuries. My Packers franchise got rid of existing injuries so Jordy is #1 making Ty #5 and Janis #6, I had to cut Abbredaris who may never pan out IRL but definitely won't because I can't put him on the PS, Barrington is my thumper and Bradford has a higher floor than his real life counterparts so he's not getting cut (if there was a practice squad I could cut him and develop him there like the Packers are hoping to do, instead I have him, Barrington + everyone else on the Packers actual roster at ILB minus Joe Thomas who was a sacrificed player), similar situation is happening with Josh Boyd, he's on IR in real life and his injury paved way for a suspended player to come back without making a cut but while he's a guy that I could stash and develop this year, instead he has to be on my roster despite not getting much play time atm.

And it goes beyond the turmoil of wanting my team's players to pan out even when doing a rebuilding franchise there are plenty of guys who show promise in Preseason but their low floors lead them to being cut because I can't afford to hope I can turn around a player at a position that isn't an immediate need.

This seems like such an easy thing to implement too, it's baffling why it's not in the game.

Defensive assignments are by far my biggest wish.

So many formations have the strong WRs in the slots or moved around all over the place, on top of TEs being hard to cover regardless, we need a natural counter on defense. I should be able to tell Talib to cover Gronk, Harris to cover Edelman, etc

# 27 princejr226 @ 10/20/15 12:58 AM
The crazy thing is almost everything listed was in madden 2005 including the tony Bruno show they should just take 2005 and put it all into Madden 2016

1. Better menus, these menus that they're using albeit better than last yr could still use some work. I want to be able to find the story lines and stats much quicker and I would like to be able to see the box score right at the front page where everything's at. i t would also be nice to click on the upcoming game and be able to see the opposing teams roster like the ways we could see our depth chart that was recently intoduced and maybe see like a scouting report of their strengths and weaknesses.

2. This one I have wanted for a long time now, can u please make it easier faster or just whatever u can to make going one player hrs I should not have to give one player 10 hrs and then have to come back and redo the same tedious process for the next 6 times, it's just like the old xp system used to be and tbh it's freaking rediculous and takes away from the game.

3. This one ain't really an adittion but still, I would like for the drafting to be a Lil tougher idk what it is but I always manage to find gems and whanot , it's gotten so bad that I don't even use all my hrs just so I won't scout all players but I can guarantee there will be and 80 rated qb, dt, t,g,c,wr rb all in the late rounds that are easy to pick out. also about that I don't mind the other positions but can the qb potion not have any 80 rated qbs past the 2nd round because that kills the realism drafting a monster qb in Rd 5 every yr just doesn't happen.

3. auto subs and defensive assignments would be nice.

4. The ability to at least change the players name, I don't care if it's only the name and not the whole player in general but plz give us that ability .The last time I played a franchise past the 7th yr was because I was able to relate to the players I named. If u noticed on this forum in the gems section everyone always talks about drafting a beast wr or rb but never remember his name and I belive that to be the reason.

yea basically if all these things were implimented I'd be very happy obviously if they gave us the ability to edit everything like in Madden 04 05 like stadiums and whatnot and our own custom draft classes I'd be in heaven, but I don't think they wanna go that direction.

Think stick to simplicity and I just agree with the article, we all have wishlist but strength in numbers!

Preaseason would be great with Camp competition etc etc

# 30 BleedGreen710 @ 10/20/15 07:32 AM
basically every 'new addition' I and others want are things that were in past games - which is pretty maddening

(no pun intended).

# 31 Ueauvan @ 10/20/15 07:45 AM
more than 5 cos im copying a prior post i made

- Not all players go to the combine at Indy, or to a regional combine so wouldn't expect all players to have draft scores
- Wunderlich result if appropriate and GPA (madden 08) and what year they are, did they redshirt are they a junior etc
- All players that attend Indy (dont know about regionals) have medical check, so injury history and INJ rating, i dont want to draft someone with low tgh or inj, and %age of downs played for their position on their stat card indicating possible stamina
- Senior Game as per Madden 08 PC
- training camp, otas etc as per mods for Madden Amp(?) for Madden 08 PC
- RFAs and all types of franchise tag Madden 08/HC09
- practice squad
- resigning a free agent you signed in that year during the season
- when trading up/down during draft, the pick number being offered if that pick is for that draft, or any trade post season before pick is chosen
- dressing 46 (47 with 3rd QB new rule recently?) as per HC09
- formation subs as per madden 08/hc06/hc09/NCAA 14 but system highlights when sub isnt present due to injury not dressed (see above) no limit to number of subs in my opinion if i want to do it
- morale madden 08
- personality and ego hc09
- coordinators and position coaches as HC06/HC09
- ability to instruct team on field to try and strip/intercept or any of the things you can do in NCAA 14 at playcall
- captains
- play design, specifically defence. ie if i want to create 3 man under with 3-4 even or 3-3-5 nickel i can, or half zone half man or whatever (hc06/hc09/madden 08) and for offence i suppose
or as the 49ers had stellar lbers in 2013 why cant i create 2-5-4 formation
- assignments ie cb1 stays with wr1 unless cb has trait for being a plonker and only playing one side
- true coach mode
- practice mode (and defence only option) where the camera stays at all 22 or wide after an iteration of a play (links to play design and testing) so i can field coverage etc
- ability to practice as your defence vs your offense ( and what string 1/2/3 (hc06) both of your playbooks not having two logins to do that
- behind the defence/defender camera (madden 08, dont have m15 for xbox one)
- player edit
- in game save (s/w dont rely on xbox one functionality)
- visibility or prompting by my staff where a player may be suited better as mlb rather than ss (ie can cycle thru positions when editing and over is shown without committing and red yellow green flag from staff if they support the poistion change for each position as you cycle
- injured reserve and designated to return, pup etc
- decent 3-4 NT prospects please, NT and being double teamed
- show me my 3-4 team not 4-3 during presentation
- ir and roster size and cutting being correct during preseason
- being able to watch cpu vs cpu
- watch probowl or have to coach it as your teams performance meant its you
- change wording at coin toss ie want wind at back in 4th qtr
- visibility of cap (forecast) for future years and cap space and affect on those years if you trade for or away or release or sign etc. ie i gotta resign my hb next year what is my cap looking like assuming mod round pick costs
- weekly training schedule (as per game i wont name) in lieu of game prep
- choosing training/medical staff/scouts etc and getting to choose the best if you can afford it
- relocation; conceptual artwork photos of stadium chosen/designed. logically same for uniforms
- IR designated to return (not cut)
-PUP

This is awesome. There are A LOT of great thoughts for additions in this thread. With a lot of game related additions, a few of note for me are a bit more usability related.

User experience in the menus
The menus...my goodness. I will say they are much more streamlined and clean this time around, but for the love of gamers please make it more user friendly. One of the biggest peeves I have is when I hit Circle or B to back out of a menu. Just let it back up one level instead of going back to the main screen or resetting.

For example, when I'm going through my roster to find which guys to cut, I sort through to a specific position let's say WR. I check WR 6's player card to check his traits in order to be able to compare him to WR 5, etc., back out of the player card, then I'm back at the full roster list of all positions... I would love for when I back out of the player card for a WR for it to go back to the WR position group so I could continue my process without having to re-sort every time.

Player card
This brings me to my second thought, the player card. I love the new menu with all of the options on the left, huge upgrade from last year. Maybe again it's the fact that after I check the traits, it backs out to a full roster menu, but I think something needs to be done here. There has to be a more intuitive way to get this information on players. Would it make sense to add to their traits the player's development level of slow, normal, quick or superstar? I just think it's out of the way to have to go to Upgrade Player, then shift over as if you’re going to upgrade him in order to find out a player's development.

Also, maybe add something where if I hit RB or R1 while in the player card, it takes me to the next player on the roster instead of having to back out and do the process all over again??

Compare players.
If we could add to the console a way to compare two (or more) players. I know this is a feature on the website where you can compare up to 4 players, but the option to find FAs absolutely sucks online. I would love to be able to click players to compare them side by side with free agent options as well as those on my own roster. If there was something that allowed me to compare say FS A on my team to the top two free agent FSs that would be awesome. I’ve found myself on too many occasions jotting down attributes on paper to be able to go back and compare them to a FA’s attributes. Maybe something could be developed in a wishlist style comparison like what is done for the draft.

Formation Subs
Lastly, bring back formation subs. I don't think this needs much detail.

1. Menu improvements. Hold my spot when I open a players' card. And for that matter, let me access the player card on EVERY screen I can see the player on: stats page, awards page, depth chart, free agency, trade center, etc. I shouldn't have to back out all the way to the roster screen to look at their card. Also, include the team name detail in their career stats page.

2. Around-the-league score ticker.

3. Position battles.

4. Morale and team chemistry, personality types.

5. Meaningful coaches and coordinators.

# 34 beekay415 @ 10/20/15 11:22 AM
me personally would love an expansion team option in franchise.

# 35 erocmann @ 10/20/15 11:35 AM
Three improvements I'd like to see in the CFM:

1) Improved career stats/records - I'd love to see top ten records for each team. I know they can't go as deep as Front Office Football, but they can definitely do better than they are now. Marshall Faulk should show up on the Rams and Colts top 10 career rushing yards with his yards for only those teams, then show up on the NFL top 10 with his total yards. I'd like to see the QB I draft climb the passing yards ladder for my team, even if he never approaches an nfl record. Or holding on to the aging RB for another year because he's only a few hundred yards away from #2 all-time on my team.

2) Have coaches really mean something - If you hire Rex Ryan, your defensive players should get a boost and your offense should suffer, needing a top notch OC to make up for Ryan's offensive liabilities. Maybe have the top OC's and QB's not want to sign with a coach like that (defensive minded...overbearing...etc)

3) Fix the formation subs - no explanation needed.

The #1 thing I wish they would add is an on/off option for showing ratings! It helps so many problems and can't possibly be difficult to add, because ratings can still run in the background.

Things this fixes/helps:

1 - Progression/regression issues are masked because if you dominate with a 75 speed Anquan Boldin, you don't really notice. If you win MVP with Colin Kaepernick, you don't feel ripped off by seeing his OVR go up only two measly points. All you know is you killed it with them. It doesn't solve the progression/regression issue, but it's a very easy way to mask it.

2 - Practice and Pre-season games matter! Who should be my number 2 running back? Which receivers should I have in the game on fourth and 4 when you need to catch a pass in traffic? Now you can't just see that player X is better than player Y and should be in the game. You have to actually PLAY with them to figure it out.

3 - Drafting is much more immersive. You don't know immediately after drafting someone if they are the next star of the league, or if your first rounder sucks. You have to use them and find out, just like in real life.

Maybe someone with more experience with programming could tell me why I'm wrong, but I can't see how this takes any substantial time to add into the game. You aren't changing how the game runs, simply changing something that shows up - ratings.

# 39 BSemps90 @ 10/20/15 06:24 PM
How about the ability to change teams during a game for those who enjoy playing one side of the ball? Used to be able to do that.

# 40 AARON67 @ 10/21/15 12:54 AM
All i have to say is this year madden is straight boring. as bad as i want to start a season in madden CFM, OR COACH MODE. i can't. this game is so out of touch with reality it not even funny. what coach do you know that has to call plays and run them. what owner do you know also have to run plays on the field. CPU VS CPU. in a offline mode is what we need ,so that as a coach i can call plays and watch my players play it out. or as a owner make decision, and let computer take over and let me see my results. 2k has it right, that why my madden is collecting dust. and football is my first sport. sad!!!!!!!!!!!!!
