Five New Additions For Madden NFL's Franchise Mode

If you’re a fan of Madden's franchise mode, then more than likely you have a list of items you would like to see added or tweaked -- most of us do. That list of items will obviously differ and vary widely depending on whom you ask because we all have different perspectives, likes and wants when it comes to our gaming utopia. For myself though, I have a pretty specific set of changes and additions that I feel would dramatically expand the Madden CFM experience, and add much needed depth and longevity.

Make Preseason Mean Something

As it is right now, the preseason in Madden is basically a waste of time for most, myself included. Sure, it’s fun to play with some of the newly signed free agents, and the rookies of course, but one can do that in Play Now mode or practice. What I would like to see added is the ability to have storylines and real position battles take place.

I mean if you’re going to label yourself as an NFL football simulation, than let’s try to do just that -- simulate the real NFL experience. Let us have practice scenarios where two wide receivers are battling for the final spot and have to prove themselves (or not) in a practice scenario mode. Or let's see how two linebackers can defend the pass or prove their tackling ability. I’m not asking for some wildly lengthy experience that would consume hours of our time, but simply a mode that allows us to see the pain and anguish that these players go through while battling to make a 53-man roster. If anything, let the user designate the players who are fighting for those positions, and put an emphasis on them and see how it plays out.

Full Defensive Assignment Ability

I know this has been mentioned by the developers, but please for the love of all that is holy, give the user the ability to fully control the defensive unit in game and out. If I want to make sure that Joe Haden, Richard Sherman or Darrelle Revis is constantly on the number one receiver, I should be able to do that. If I want to double team an opponent’s best wide out, I should be able to do that without having to manipulate the system in order to achieve that.

This is a basic necessity and need in order to play consistently good defense in the NFL, and it’s the same in the Madden franchise. Let’s be honest here, are you ever going to see a Darrin Walls or Brent Grimes line up against Calvin Johnson half the game? That answer would be no, unless you’re playing Madden of course.

Score Ticker

I know this seems like such a trivial item to add, but a large percentage of Madden users really want this to be part of Madden 17 CFM and beyond, and so do I. If we want to take it a bit further than just a score ticker with your CFM league scores scrolling at the bottom, how about a break in the game to show the scores from around the league, and how they may be impacting the user's team and its current playoff run?

If it’s Week 13 and I am a game out of the final Wild Card spot, and the same with two other teams, wouldn’t the immersion factor increase dramatically if I were aware of what’s going on elsewhere in the league? I understand this would really only work for an offline CFM, but it would still be a welcomed addition.

Presentation

While the overall presentation has improved with Madden 16, it still slacks behind Sony’s MLB: The Show, and far behind the NBA 2K franchise. If we're being honest with ourselves, I think after some time with the game, we start to press buttons to quickly navigate through the cutscenes and such. However, I feel like that happens because it’s boring and repetitive. The obvious “must have” is a pregame, halftime, and postgame show that has some guts to it and is dynamic enough that it makes us want to watch.

During pregame, I absolutely would watch players walking through the tunnel from the locker room, similar to what EA’s NHL franchise used to do. Halftime isn't bad, but there's still bugs and the visuals really need to be improved so better replay shots are used during the highlight reel. Also this would be a good time to take us quickly around the league.

Let’s not stop there though, either take the time to record a much larger spectrum of lines with Phil and Jim, or start over with a new group. The truth is that most sports commentary gets repetitive, but that is because the approach to it is often a secondary thought. The real answer here is to have at minimum two commentary teams, and much like NCAA Basketball 10 from EA, allow the user to choose between them. Lastly, I would like to see a pregame showcase of a player to watch that includes season stats, and maybe some highlights from prior games included.

Coaching Carousel

Since 2003 there has been a total of 83 new head coaches in the NFL, with only 14 of them having prior head coaching experience. I know you can fire coaches in Madden and hire them, but it is so arbitrary and has very little impact on the game. I would love to see a system where if you hire certain coordinators or prior head coaches, your team's strengths and weaknesses are actually impacted.

If I hire a Vic Fangio or Rod Marinelli, my defense should get a boost, right? If I am playing as a head coach running the team and get let go, I would love to have a chance to prove myself with another team either as a head coach or coordinator. A realistic coaching carousel is an absolute must in any football game, and the game would inch closer to a true sim if it were actually included and implemented correctly.

These are just a few ideas that I feel could help take Madden 17 to the next level, and trust me when I say there are many more. I am enjoying Madden 16 CFM with the improvements, but there is still a ways to go. I know the current development group seems to be very open to change and implementation, and let’s hope that trend continues. What changes or additions would you like to see in Maddens CFM going forward?

another i dont think i mentioned

in roster you change teams if you want to look at WRs, in the old versions you could look up Free Agents or Entire NFL (as if they were a team), ie im looking for a WR where CAT is sorted high to low, i want to scan through all players/teams inc FAs to find say a sub 23 yr old who is 80+ cat i can then manually look for CIT/RTE etc

and 100% on the back up one level not right back to the beginning

Some great ideas in the comments, but I kept my list to five and to features that either only apply to CFM or impact CFM much more than other modes, or would be used much more frequently in CFM. Usability, natural-feeling gameplay and realistic stats are my top goals!

Top Five
1. Fix auto-subs for CPU: make my opponent feel more like their real-world version
2. Enable customizing CPU playbooks: same
3. Formation- or Play-specific substitutions (ie., make it easy for me to roll with 4 Safeties when I choose Nickel): make it easy for me to use my roster and its strengths the way I want or mirror their real-life usage, and let me save this setting
4. Gameday or week-to-week individual player assignments, ie., CB1 covers WR1 or Left Side, Dbl Team TE.
If Sherman is covering one side, I want him to do that in my CFM. same if he starts covering the slot!
5. Eliminate Confidence and Drive Goals:

Other Good Ideas
League scoreboard in bottom ticker
Lock trajectories for some player stats that should degrade over time or stay flat if the guy is a stud (eg., STR,SPD), and tweak the XP system to go both up and down depending on performance and training time dedicated to that player.

While I agree that madden isn't perfect I do believe it's gets a high percentage of things right. I have really enjoyed the last 2 editions EA has put out particularly cfm. I think they have been great. I did start playing franchise mode on madden 04 so I understand that a lot of people think of the ps2/xbox editions as the golden madden age for cfm/franchise mode and would classify myself as one of those fans but I think a lot of criticism EA gets is bit over blown as I have found my gm mode on 2k to be unplayable with all the micro managing that's needed. Adjusting practice difficultly and keeping the head coaches feelings from getting hurt make me quit before I ever really get started. So the new features madden adds while sometimes ineffective haven't become a game killing issue for me yet.

That being said my 5 additions to madden 17 would be:
1. Position battles in Preseason
2. More coach changing selections while playing as an owner ie. Be able to hire steelers def coordinator or jets off coordinator as head coach/ being able to choose coordinators while playing as head coach.
3. Restricted free agency
4. A better scale of degressing attribute ie. wrs in their 30s speed shouldnt drop as drastically
5. Realistic contract demands by players as they seem to agree to much less than what they are worth

Great thread with a lot of fantastic input. I will most likely only be echoing others at this point but i will throw my notes into the discussion...

Expanded coaching staff and impact.
- HC, OC, DC, ST, GM.
- Better coaches make their units play better.
- coaches have styles/personalities. Good coaches will attack defensive weaknesses. Cocky or bad coaches may just play however they want. Good coordinators have better playcalling abilities.
- Positional coaches may be a stretch.
- Background history on real and fictional coaches. Also having their own strengths and weaknesses.
- Good coaching staff make crappy teams play a little better. Bad coaching staffs make stacked teams play a little worse
- GM responsible for building team that fits HC system. Thus they will make personnel moves accordingly.
- Good GM has better chance at trading for, drafting, or signing players that fit their system.
- Role system/personalities for coaches?

Expanded news and immersion.
- National/big news, such as nfl.com
- beat writer blogs for each team. Real writers or fictional writers.
- Major news outlet would break news on trades, injuries, big division wins, etc... Nfl.com type stuff. Individual blogs would focus more on the team. Like how good or bad they are playing. Will a player sign an extension at the end of the season. News about how a 3rd rounder just got his first sack/TD/INT/etc...
- Press conferences?
- Put the major news and/or team news back on first page of franchise. It should be in your face.
- Off-season updates, camps, injuries, etc... Everything!

Expanded player roles that create gameplanning.
- QBs human and AI should respect and fear testing guys like Sherman/Revis.
- Human and AI should focus on playing away from star defenders or doubling star recievers, etc. Expanding coaching/gameplanning connects to this.
- Actual gameplanning. What type of offense. What type of defense. Figure out the weaknesses and mismatches. Who are the stars and sleepers to keep an eye on?
- Team distractions. Allow coach to choose disciplinary action. Star player late for meetings. Bench him for a quarter? Half? Entire game? Be careful the balance of team chemistry and losing team discipline by letting troublemakers off too easy. Teams can lose morale and become undisciplined on the field, prone to mistakes. They also play better when the team is winning and trash talk opponents. But they play less inspired when losing and throw their own team under the bus.

Team chemistry.
- New coaches and players and systems take time to gel. No more building an instant champion by signing a boatload of high profile free agents and mega trades.
- Building chemistry builds discipline and morale. Teams player tighter and better. Coaches impact discipline. As do distractions, injuries, losing etc..

Rebuild playing modes.
- Player, coach, owner all feel exactly the same. Theres really no immersion here, yet all 3 should have their own feel. Something that draws the player in to that mode that cant be found in the others.

New commentators.
- Its just time to go in a new direction.

Team builder.
- allow created teams in franchise mode.
- make a new team creator. Even the one like ncaa football would be an improvement, but have it offline rather than online only. And it would be nice to finally have new logos rather than the same generic ones that havent changed for years.

Practice squads.

I remember we were able to completely edit the offensive and defensive alignment even the special teams I know you mentioned here, but in the past from the home screen you went in and edited your special teams and you had all your ballers out there (IE Seattle) running down on the kickoff - the special teams was just a small sample, but instead of doing it in game you can set your 4-3 to one group and your 4-3 over to another group that way it was ok subs set, start the game, and barring injury that was one less thing to worry about

Things this fixes/helps:

If you win MVP with Colin Kaepernick, you don't feel ripped off by seeing his OVR go up only two measly points. All you know is you killed it with them. It doesn't solve the progression/regression issue, but it's a very easy way to mask it.

2 - Practice and Pre-season games matter! Who should be my number 2 running back? Which receivers should I have in the game on fourth and 4 when you need to catch a pass in traffic? Now you can't just see that player X is better than player Y and should be in the game. You have to actually PLAY with them to figure it out.

3 - Drafting is much more immersive. You don't know immediately after drafting someone if they are the next star of the league, or if your first rounder sucks. You have to use them and find out, just like in real life.

Maybe someone with more experience with programming could tell me why I'm wrong, but I can't see how this takes any substantial time to add into the game. You aren't changing how the game runs, simply changing something that shows up - ratings.
I like that idea. I remember a guy playing madden 11 and left the edit player feature and would manually adjust guys overalls based on their stats.

Customization. Give us the ability to fix the screw ups that are built into the game. We shouldn't be stuck with an unplayable franchise/forced to restart after one or two seasons.

Allowing player editing in offline cfm would make the game so much more enjoyable.

# 48 IlluminatusUIUC @ 10/22/15 12:55 AM
This is bit pie in the sky, but I would love the ability to run a completely custom online CFM. Why should we run all 32 teams if we only have 16 good players. Just re-organize the league down to two 8 team conferences and 14 game seasons.

Let gamers move franchises before the CFM starts. The Titans suck. Long live the Houston Oilers. (to name one example)

# 49 l8knight1 @ 10/22/15 12:22 PM
Why did they give us legendary coaches in Franchise and then take them away!!??

A simple option at the beginning of creating a Franchise would be great for this. You could choose between having full numeric ratings (like they are now), letter ratings (like sort of like how the draft is done), or no ratings.

Here are mine, which I'm trying to make different from everyone elses but it's really hard.

1. Passing defence seems to be ridiculously one-sided. I have a crazy hard time stopping the pass, which in turn means I give up like 500 yards passing every single game. It can probably be fixed via sliders, but I'm not sure what a good balance would be. Not to mention both safeties and corners make insane mistakes that don't make any kind of sense.

2. Drafting could be a lot more interesting. I think having an idea of where each player is going (mock drafts or draft intelligence from staff) would give me the ability to see if my targeted player(s) will be where I intend to draft him, or if I should try trading up or down. This would be constantly evolving throughout the season and the draft, but I think it would make me pay attention to scouting and the trading block more closely.

3. Players need to qualify in stats in order to be considered a league leader. It's sort of a peeve to go into the stats page and see that my QBR is 18th in the league, but there are 9 guys listed who have 1 touchdown on 1 passing attempt ahead of him.

4. Player momentum and ball spotting seem to be consistently awkward and sketchy.

5... I don't know. I can't think of one at the moment.

I would like to include my few cents:

-Rosters, make it like the real NFL were you have to activate and deactivate roster spots, like the NFL you can only dress a certain amount of players, not just 53 designated, this would make it more strategic to how many D-Line play versus CB and so on, (this is why practice squad would be important)

-Defensive camera, (there is only one/two option) the camera options to Play offense should be the same amount as it would be on Defense.

This are only a couple that come to mind so far besides the others

# 55 SyncereBlackout @ 11/11/15 10:56 PM
Practice squad of 22. Where the practice squad players get (minimal) XP (+100 per player per week).

A built in waiver system for CFM where a commissioner would have the ability to set the OVR of the players that must pass through waivers. (Or make it based on years in the league and the week of the season the the NFL)

The ability for CFM commissioners to turn off visual settings for the entire league (and other similar settings)

I would like player ratings to fall in 3 buckets. Physical - ones that don't change/fluctuate very much (combine stats); coach able- awr & play recognition which can be upgraded with XP but capped by players learning ability (and hopefully a learning attribute similar to NFL coach); and skill attributes which will be dynamic and linked to position coaches, scheme and player confidence/drive goals/Milestone's.

I would like assistant and position coaches that gain XP based on player performance and the success of a gameplan (based on scheme/play style)

# 57 apmw13 @ 11/13/15 01:15 AM
A few thoughts, some of which have been in previous iterations. Most of these apply to owner mode (maybe coach mode too).

1. Coaching Staff. It would be great to hire offensive/defensive coordinators. These coordinators offer different XP advantages to certain specific postions (i.e. passrushers or safeties, etc). Depending on what coordinator is hired it also affects/decides what scheme you run. So, if you are the Panthers for example and hire Wade Phillips you move from a 4-3 to a 3-4 scheme and so on. You can of course, also hire one of these coordinators as a potential head coach and could make an offer to a coordinator from a team.

2. Get rid of the option to hire a scout and replace them with actual NFL GM's. Signing a GM can give you the scouting bonus trait and re-sign traits for certain positions. A head coach can still have this but it's more rare. A GM could also come with a certain philosophy that if in unison with your HC could add for XP, scouting bonuses etc. It would make the strategy interesting and finding the right mix of GM, Head Coach and Coordinators could give you a little bit of an edge in XP for example. A GM like Ozzie Newsome would offer more weekly scouting points than a young GM maybe. These are just thoughts.

3. The Draft Process. Mock drafts that get released every 3 weeks, for example. It would make it interesting and also give you more of an idea where a draft day trade might be needed.
Also, it would be fun to be able to edit the draft class at the beginning of the season to a certain extent. You can maybe create the type of players and an x amount of ability points. This way you can not create a prospect that is 99 overall. But this can fluctuate and come draft time this player might have lost point or gained points. Still keep story line players in the draft, these can be non editable.

4. Being able to edit relocation teams. In my eyes it would be fine to have a set amount of logo's, uniforms, team names. A la Madden 15, 16. But let us mix uniforms, logo's and cities. Also, let us change the colors if we so chose. If you want to move a team to Brooklyn, call them the bulldogs (currently only available for London), use the uniform option of the aftershocks but pick a green and red color scheme for logo's and uniforms, let us do that.
Also, if we want to relocate the rams to LA for example, let us keep the name but change the uni's. But so it would work with the legal side of things you can only use the current color scheme or the team, but apply that color scheme to one of the uniforms from the pool we can chose from.

5. Updated equipment. Fifa has this every year. It's a little detail that adds to the realism. New gloves, helmets, etc. NCAA gave us good options.

Again, these are just ideas and it might have been a little long winded, but I think these would be cool and add some excitement to CFM and make everyone's CFM experience a little more unique to the next persons.

# 58 Ueauvan @ 01/12/16 07:59 AM
previously posted most of these:

- in roster you change teams if you want to look at WRs, in the old versions you could look up Free Agents or Entire NFL (as if they were a team), ie im looking for a WR where CAT is sorted high to low, i want to scan through all players/teams inc FAs to find say a sub 23 yr old who is 80+ cat i can then manually look for CIT/RTE etc

- back up one level not right back to the beginning when navigating
- Not all players go to the combine at Indy, or to a regional combine so wouldn't expect all players to have draft scores
- Wunderlic result if appropriate and GPA (madden 08) and what year they are, did they redshirt are they a junior etc, declaring early etc
- All players that attend Indy (dont know about regionals) have medical check, so injury history and INJ rating, i dont want to draft someone with low tgh or inj, and %age of downs played for their position on their stat card indicating possible stamina
- Senior Game as per Madden 08 PC
- training camp, otas etc as per mods for Madden Amp(?) for Madden 08 PC
- RFAs and all types of franchise tag Madden 08/HC09
- practice squad
- resigning a free agent you signed in that year during the season
- when trading up/down during draft, the pick number being offered if that pick is for that draft, or any trade post season before pick is chosen
- dressing 46 (47 with 3rd QB new rule recently?) as per HC09
- formation subs as per madden 08/hc06/hc09/NCAA 14 but system highlights when sub isnt present due to injury not dressed (see above) no limit to number of subs in my opinion if i want to do it
- morale madden 08
- personality and ego hc09
- coordinators and position coaches as HC06/HC09
- ability to instruct team on field to try and strip/intercept or any of the things you can do in NCAA 14 at playcall
- captains
- play design, specifically defence. ie if i want to create 3 man under with 3-4 even or 3-3-5 nickel i can, or half zone half man or whatever (hc06/hc09/madden 08) and for offence i suppose
or as the 49ers had stellar lbers in 2013 why cant i create 2-5-4 formation
- assignments ie cb1 stays with wr1 unless cb has trait for being a plonker and only playing one side
- true coach mode
- practice mode defence only option where the camera stays at all 22 or wide (links to play design and testing) so i can field coverage etc
- ability to practice as your defence vs your offense ( and what string 1/2/3 (hc06) both of your playbooks not having two logins to do that)
- player edit
- in game save (s/w dont rely on xbox one functionality)
- visibility or prompting by my staff where a player may be suited better as mlb rather than ss (ie can cycle thru positions when editing and over is shown without committing and red yellow green flag from staff if they support the position change for each position as you cycle
- injured reserve and designated to return, pup etc
- decent 3-4 NT prospects please, NT and being double teamed
- show me my 3-4 team not 4-3 during presentation
- ir and roster size and cutting being correct during preseason
- being able to watch cpu vs cpu
- watch probowl or have to coach it as your teams performance meant its you
- change wording at coin toss ie want wind at back in 4th qtr
- visibility of cap (forecast) for future years and cap space and affect on those years if you trade for or away or release or sign etc. ie i gotta resign my hb next year what is my cap looking like assuming mid round pick costs
- weekly training schedule (as per game i wont name) in lieu of game prep
- choosing training/medical staff/scouts etc and getting to choose the best if you can afford it
- relocation; conceptual artwork photos of stadium chosen/designed. logically same for uniforms
- IR designated to return (not cut)
- ability to either amend plays in playbook to add stunts if none present or audible a dline stunt etc.

Gameday inactives, practice squad and having an ACTUAL Long Snapper position which would add an element of strategy to roster decisions that is long overdue.

I want a feature we used to have but for some reason it was taken out: bring back the coaching staffs. I want to see at least coordinators with various bonuses to different positions like we used to have. Actually give these guys coaching packages to start out with as well. Some of these guys who become head coaches are already really good at several positions, why not have their packages reflect it?

I also want retirement redone completely. They make guys retire way too young esp. when in real life these guys have several years left on their contracts and have publicly stated they will play for years to come. Having big name guys retire en mass after the first two seasons in franchise is extremely frustrating.

Why not have some kind of option during the season where you can talk to them as the coach/owner and get them to stay? Then if they agree you can then talk about honoring the rest of their deal or specify just how long they plan to play.
