FIFA 15 Demo Gameplay Impressions

The FIFA 15 demo launched this week with OS'ers giving plenty of feedback about what they observed. With several playable teams and the ability to really see much of what the gameplay is bringing this year, customers are going to be able to approach their buying decision of FIFA with a quite informed opinion.

We got a chance to play a few games of the demo ourselves, and here are our thoughts on this year's FIFA based on the demo...

Glenn Wigmore: I have logged many hours with the Xbox One version of FIFA 14, and I'm certainly an admirer of how the FIFA dev team approached that transition to the next generation of hardware. By focusing on resolution, animations and framerate, as well as getting most of the modes and features over, it helped keep things familiar while demonstrating the power of the new console.

From my time with the demo, FIFA 15 pushes everything further, and the additions end up being meaningful. I'm really enjoying the emotion that all aspects of the game possess, from the crowd to the individual players to the on-pitch action. The concept of telling an "in-game story" via reactions from players and replay packages works well, and it's neat to see players react when a teammate misses a chance after through pass or when a goalie and another player cross paths.

The man-to-man battles, including possession slide tackles, feel a lot better, and there's much more control on the pitch when moving at low speeds, as the dribbling animations and touch on the ball feels improved. Goalies still have a few odd behaviours, but the new animations and goal possibilities are apparent right away, as goalie Joe Hart sailed through the air with new animations and let in some deflection and other non-FIFA type goals. The AI on default settings seems unable to stop speedy runners, which is a worrisome sign. Hopefully harder difficulties provide different results.

Visually, the crowd, kits, player faces and pitch all show improvement, and the audio package continues to be impressive. I'm certainly looking forward to the full release.

Chris Sanner: There's definitely a lot of good in the demo. The player emotions are great to see and the visuals are noticeably better. The presentation package is still tight, and the crowds sound better than ever.

Players have more weight this year on the pitch, which means you can't do a lot of the cheaper things you were able to do last year, although running past defenders still seems a viable option on the lower difficulty levels. The additional control afforded to you on the pitch, especially when you are moving at slower and faster speeds is much welcome.

The tactics feature is nice, although admittedly my first few games haven't really given me enough to go on what they are offering. Goalkeepers are said to be improved, but I really didn't notice much on the demo difficulty level that'd indicate that is the case just yet. The man-to-man battles really do shine, as matchups are much more dynamic and unpredictable. I saw some real flops out there on the pitch.

Overall, FIFA 15 is looking like a winner on the pitch. If the modes follow suit, and if you are a fan of football at all, you will have a hard time saying no to this game when it launches later this month.

Just going to take a moment to remind everybody that the fifa demos are generally wildly different from the release version. Not only that, but there are always multiple game play patches that will happen in the first few months.

If you compare the fifa 14 demo to fifa 14 release patched through December of last year, they are night and day two completely different games.

The fifa 14 demo last year got very similar reviews to the ones you all are giving this demo.

All I'm saying is wait until release to give this game your final review.

Last night I had a very good game with 7 minute halves on World Class/Slow. I was Dortmund vs Napoli. Won 3-0 and held Napoli to just a few shots, I don't think they had more than 3. Had one curious moment where Reus was cutting through the defence and found himself open to take a shot but he pulled a muscle and couldn't continue the run. I recorded the whole game but the file is huge in HD, will try to upload overnight.

First part yes, demo to full changing a lot.

Second part no, at least no for NG. I think they put out one patch for NG 14 and it was just called stability improvements.

I liked the 14 demo, there seemed to be some player individuality (messi was dangerous) and the CPU attacked better in all difficulty levels chosen. Both of those changed drastically for the worse in the full game.

I know very little about soccer. Only really pay attention when the World Cup is taking place and the U.S is playing, but my goodness this game is so addicting to me.

Granted, I don't know the ins and outs of soccer so there may be things that don't work properly, but since I'm ignorant to them anyways, I don't notice them, nor do they hamper my experience.

I've played this demo everyday since it dropped and each time, although its the same two teams, (and I lose every time) I find pure enjoyment in this game.

For the first time in I don't know how many years, I will be purchasing a FIFA game.

Well done.

No I didn't know that! Thanks for the heads up!

Haha--put me in the same category. I don't know soccer well enough to know where the game may have deficiencies (which is a welcomed change from Madden/NCAA). All I know is I am now officially nuts about the EPL and learning more about other country's leagues and the Champions League which started yesterday.

I too can't wait for next week!

That's because NG was released much later than ps3/360 and it had those previous changes already built in. NG 14 was a special case and obviously not what I was talking about.

I cannot decide which system to buy this game on. All my soccer friends are PS4, but I just love not having to pause the game on xb1 for substitutions and just using the Kinnect to swap players in and out.

My goal keeper, Simon Mignolet got red carded early in a match and the game wouldn't let me sub another one in for him. I tried putting in position players for him too, but it was a no-go. Hopefully that's not an issue in the retail. I had to back out to the dashboard and restart it.

Every year, EA throws us some crap that no one really cares about (Ooh, look, the corner flag moves sometimes!), and continues to ignore gameplay. The CPU's style of play has sucked and hasn't changed in...forever. Damn you, FIFA15. And I was so excited...
I get your frustration. I really went through that last year with 14. As much as I hated parts of the game, there was no other option if you wanted to play a decent football game. My impressions after playing the 15 demo is that all the things that frustrated me, all the things that made the game unrealistic and unfair, are exactly as they were in 14. EA adds some nice new graphics, excessive field wear and foot prints, and calls it a day. But don't get me wrong, I will still buy 15. Fifa is still entertaining, and the online play can be really fun (seasons and FUT). What should be recognized though, is that Fifa isn't the only decent footballing game this year. Give the PES demo a try and you'll be in for a treat. It isn't as pretty or sound as authentic as Fifa, but damn does it play great... this coming from a long time Fifa player.

I've really enjoyed the demo, since it's release i haven't touched FIFA 14, the only issue i have is the keepers are a bit hit and miss, sometimes they're great and others you're left sitting there thinking "Did that really just happen?" but all in all i'm very excited for the full game, however it's reported that the demo is only a 60% build of the game, the version at gamescom was further along (90%) so except a difference when it's released, the crowds look and sound great, the little cut scenes are cool and it looks like finally the impact engine will help the game and not hinder it like previous FIFA's, lots of new animations and as a Premier League fan it's great to have the full license for it

I'm not a fan of the shooting in the demo, unless I just haven't got used to the angles compared to 14.

Is it just me that thinks the keepers are a little too good? I'm liking the general gameplay though, impressed overall.

Quick question... is there a way to do like a touch pass? Like when you have two players that are just a couple of feet apart, is there a way to do a really light pass between the two of them? Sometimes I'll pass the ball into the middle and I'll have a teammate running right off another player's shoulders pretty much and I just want to tap it on to that guy because he has a better look at the net, but doing a regular pass it's almost impossible to kick it light enough to pull that off.

Is this what the "finesse pass" function is for?

Are you using manual passing? I was actually going to post that in here, but I don't think I got around to it. I love the fact that you can do little touch passes to a guy standing right next to you.

Just tap A ever so lightly, and it'll just barely come off your foot. But if you're using assisted passing, maybe that's why it doesn't seem to be working.

I'm using manual. I guess I just have a really hard time just tapping the A button that lightly. Guess it's just something I need to practice more.

Yea that is still going to happen in the retail version. If you don't know soccer then here is a lesson. If any player gets a red card then that player is out for the rest of the game and obviously where said player has been ejected he can't be replaced by any other player. Also he is suspended for his teams next game in that tournament. For example, if it was a BPL game where that happened then Mignolet would not play in the next BPL game but he could play in Liverpool's next Champions League game. Also how did your goalie get a red card? I have only seen a goalie get a yellow once in real life. And that was Tim Howard this weekend.

Another thing I have noticed, lightly tapping A works best for a back heel when you just want a subtle redirection to another player. But if you're facing forward and just want to guide it over to a player making a run right next to you, I think a light tap of Y works bette.r

I think you are missing his point. If I get a red card, I will move the red carded player to striker (regardless of who gets the red card). I find this to be lest obtrusive to my playing style.
OP is saying he can't sub another GK into a different position and then move said GK to the GK position on the field.
This should be pointed out to EA. That's an oversight. I don't understand why you couldn't move a field player into goal, if you wanted.
