Top Five Wishes for MLB 13: The Show

I think because it come out early in the year, MLB: The Show is often overlooked and/or underrated come “game of the year” voting time. The rapid fire releases of Madden, NHL, Fifa, and NBA games, not to mention this year’s late slate of racing titles, can overshadow a game that typically drops in the first quarter.

However, I think MLB: The Show is, and has been, the best virtual representation of a sport on the market today. Its quality and improvements aren’t necessarily flashy, but, like baseball itself, the game is full of nuances and details that make it a deep and strategic experience.

That said, it has never been perfect either. Gameplay issues, like too many comebackers to the pitcher, can mar the proceedings. The modes are deep, but not always accessible or exciting. Online has certainly been a mixed bag.

Assuming we all want these well-known quirks to be fixed, here are my top five wishes for MLB: The Show...either next year or next generation.

Just like the Red Sox and their pre-season dreams, so is MLB: The Show forgotten when GOTY voting time comes around.

Generated Counts

This is such as simple feature, but one that makes a huge deal for busy people trying to play out a multi-year franchise. All-Star Baseball 2005 did this well, and its about time for it to show up in MLB: The Show.

Instead of starting each at-bat with a fresh count, the game would logically generate a count based on the pitcher/batter ratings. This would not only speed up games, allowing us to play more in a shorter time, but could also help generate statistically realistic walks for those of us who too often swing away. This could also help regulate pitch counts.

While I love playing every game in a season, the truth is, I usually end up simming. Life has a way of getting in the way of virtual baseball season. Generated counts would offer a controllable compromise, and theoretically produce more accurate stats.

Most baseball fans watch the MLB Network throughout the season with great interest.

MLB Network Integration

This channel has become my go-to whenever nothing else is on, thoroughly replacing Sportscenter and ESPN. I would love to see presentation elements, broadcasters, and even entire shows incorporated into The Show.

For instance, a quick MLB Tonight segment would be a great way to recap the games simulated, even if it’s just narrated highlights, a la Berman in NFL 2K5. Perhaps a 30 Clubs in 30 Days presentation during Spring Training could recap the big off-season moves. A quick countdown of the week's top plays could be offered each “weekend” on the calendar. Enhanced post-season atmosphere would also be a natural evolution.

Extend the integration further, tying it into the broadcasting team and in-game elements, and you have a cohesive, realistic, and fan-favorite presentation package. NFL 2K5, College Hoops 2K8, and NBA 2K11 laid the groundwork; it’s time to see a game truly ramp up what presentation can be.

The Franchise Mode in The Show is good, but it's time to get better.

Full GM Options

MLB: The Show’s franchise mode has been solidly deep the past few years, but it’s time to shake things up. While the addition of realistic contract options (Rule 5, arbitration, etc), have added a layer of realism, they haven’t necessarily upped the excitement factor. The same is true for the marketing, banking, and budgeting aspects of the mode.

While I think a revamp is in order, I’d love to see the mode blown out with options that have been seen and enjoyed in other baseball games. Number one on that list for me is an expansion mode, as seen in All Star Baseball. Included here would be a uniform editor, stadium builder, and expansion draft.

Give GM’s the option to relocate if they want. Throw in some random events, like those available in Out of the Park (elimination of the DH?). But most importantly, redesign the interface so these things are easily accessible and manageable--the most recent NFL Head Coach game did this very elegantly.

Time to roll RTTS and GM mode into one.

Connected Careers

Ok, so don’t call it that. But I would love to see Road to the Show and Franchise modes rolled into one.

Ideally, this would include cut-aways (again, see the MLB Network) from your team’s game to your player’s key at-bats.

But even at a basic level, merging the two “universes” would allow us to dedicate time to one mode, instead of splitting time between two.

A big injury story might mean one thing for a team’s playoff chances, but might offer a different perspective for a created player trying to make it to the Show. We may want to trade the farm to get our created player on our favorite team.

Either way, there are lots of possibilities when these two modes function as one.

Playing as the current guys is fun and all, but why not try to get the 1927 Yankees?

Great Moments/Historical Teams

I know that this one is hard, due to licensing etc. But NBA 2K13 shows how a game can serve as a living museum of sorts, teaching younger fans--through interactive gameplay--about the great and storied teams of the past. It’s one thing to watch footage of these teams; it’s another to actually play with them.

And, while classic teams are certainly attainable now through roster editing, a dedicated mode would be a baseball lover’s dream. Include footage of the team in action, period specific broadcast elements (see NBA 2K12 or MVP 2005), and authentic classic stadiums.

Going back to the MLB Network integration, an easy place to start is the recent “20 Greatest Games” series, allowing users to replay those games to attain a different or similar results.

If the producers of The Show can fix the small gameplay issues and add some of these elements, it won't matter what time of year it releases. MLB: The Show will be the greatest sports game or the year, if not all time.

What's on your wishlist for MLB: The Show?

Is this a top 5 request for you? Cause its never even entered my realm of displeasure in the game from it, but giver if you really believe in it.

Which is why it's an INDIVIDUAL wish list.

So I suppose when the person made this thread for a wish list, everyone was supposed to have the same thing, right?

That's why they make these to hear different things from different points of view.

Wanna add to my wish list...

I wish they would let you do something with the money you earn in RTTS. Like able to buy different kinds of gloves. I understand they can't use Nike or under armour, but it would be cool if you buy different designed gloves or signature bats that other players use.

Or you can use the money to buy skill points. Maybe add a few more hairstyles and facial things.

I don't know... I am done with my wish list now.

You did pick out the one thing in my reply I was being facetious about.

Bullpen and bench coach.
Pictures of the managers.

1) I want to create Casey Stengle and all the other historic Managers.

2) Today's Braves uniforms are very much like their Milwaukee Braves uniforms.
Please add a Blue and Red hat with an "M" and or "B" to the Braves hat collection.
( Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews and Hank Aaron would look good with their "M" or "B" Milwaukee Braves cap.) ASB offered a hat with a "B" on it. I thought that was cool.

3) Low cut stirrups and loose fitting sleeves cut just above the wrist.

4) An off-line choice to play with any number of teams in season or franchise. I would choose 16 teams. My verizon (air-card) wouldn't stay on-line long enough to finish a game half the time.

5) The Redlegs 1956 "cut sleeves" uniform with their red and white hats.

I would love to get a batting system similar to the PYS series from konami.

example:

i just posted this at the MLB The Show forum and it actually adds up exactly to 5 so this post is very appropriate

guys they already have brand new commentary for '13. JSYK I personally don't think it's necessary to always go with 3. They should maybe give us an option for 2 or 3 but either way I think this years commentary is going to be good. Honestly for all the bashing (mine included), it was above decent in 2012 after looking back at it.

Since, I'm posting I just want to repeat some of my most favorite request, out of the many I have made. Because I haven't seen some of them posted enough personally.

We need expanded minor leagues. We don't have enough players to run our franchise at our disposal. Getting rid of AA guys is not always ideal, sometimes they're just there because not enough room in AAA or there are various reasons why. Also, the waiting list to play gets piled up very quickly, to see guys get in action.

Improved statistics, we need to see much more out of the statistics/record keeping for franchise. Should include, all team history, injury history, all minor league history, transactional. All should be available in one swoop.

Much Improved Impact Physics, fairly simple. Im going to post a video, to support my plea here. I want to see more wipeouts and collisions if it's called for. Fifa 13's model is one you should aspire to. NHL 13 is done pretty well also. I need to see impact anytime its necessary and it should result in injuries of all varieties.

Last. I'll mention weather and I have more but I won't go any further than this. We need a weather 2.0 introduced, it would be great if we had dynamic weather oppurtunity like F1 2012. Where we get real temperatures and a rich variety of weather circumstances all throughout the season. But the bottom line is, our season needs to have the ability to be affected by weather. Whether we play in tough circumstances for a day or two because of T-storms or we are forced into a double header or a shortened game. For franchise mode this is something we need, because it's glaring and missing from the season experience.

I can't leave this without mentioning, you guys need to put the retractable, closed roof versions in this game. We have gone far to long without it, and personally I'll now be dissapointed if 13' doesnt have it. I think there should be a way that this gets done.

That is all, we're getting so close, I'm just looking forward to seeing whats new as I plan to invest so much time in this game

1.) Classic stadiums
2.) More classic stadiums
3.) More more classic stadiums
4.) More more more classic stadiums

*** I know I will never see this in The Show, however I am hopeful in the next
generation when Sony will have some competition!

I'm sure whether or not they have competition has zero to do with classic stadiums.

1.) Pitching splits (i.e. Justin Masterson is awful against lefties but excellent against righties)
2.) Some sort of daily franchise that follows along with real life games. The rosters would be set to real life, but we determine the outcome of the game.
3.) Realistic pitches out of the box.
4.) Improved bullpen handling by the AI.
5.) Expansion teams

Nba2k has something similar to your #2. You have the option if starting your association (franchise) at today's date. All standings and stats are 100% as they are in real life from your starting point

1. Expansion mode
2. Better announcers
3. Expansion mode
4. Much better fielding
5. Some sort of expansion mode

I want major league strike zone as an option..where the strike zone is a fair bit smaller, not just umps calling a different strike zone. and dont even have pitchers change how they pitch now, just make the zone smaller. just as an option

# 239 CabreraMVP @ 01/02/13 02:47 PM
I want them to add variety to the pitchers after motions after the pitch. Every pitcher throws the ball, then steps in the same spot on the mound, waiting for the catcher to throw it back. After seeing the same thing 100 times, it begins to look a little unrealistic.

If they could have guys maybe walk a few steps toward the plate then recieve the ball, or play with their hat, adjust their glove, there's a milion things pitchers do after the pitch. They don't stand in the same spot, in the same exact position every time.

Same with the first basemen after an out. In the game, they catch the ball, then go into the same animation of pausing awkwardly, then tossing it to the second basemen. Add some variety or some flow to their animations when throwing around the horn.

1) Detailed career statistics on player cards in Franchise Mode (obp, slug, ops, strike outs, walks, SB, 2b, 3b, runs, etc). Highlight the statistics leaders too just like on real baseball cards.
2) Player resumes on player cards. I'd like to see a record of previous years award winners, previous leaders in statistical categories, championships, or all star selections. They could take it one step further and attach experience point values to each item on the resume which would help improve overall team performance. This could give AI a reason to sign or start veterans over freshly drafted prospects.
3) Loosely designate the type a hitter a player is supposed to be. For instance, a player that shows the skill set of a lead off hitter should continue to develop as a lead off hitter. Same with a number 2 hitter or a clean up hitter. Then have AI build teams and lineups based on a hitters role. This would prevent Mark Texiera from ever batting in the 2 hole!
4) Player ranking system. For both the pro's and the prospects. Maybe include 2 lists. One ranking talent and another ranking actual performance.
5) Ability to tinker with and build line ups during the offseason in Franchise Mode. This one is slightly nitpicky since I can do with pen and paper, but why should I? I find it easier to make my signings when I can see the holes in my line ups rather than holes in my 40 man rosters.
