Five Things EA Sports must do for Success in Madden NFL 13

Ever since Madden landed on next-gen consoles, there has been a plethora of issues that seem to go unfixed every year. As gamers, we cannot seem to get an answer one way or another as to why these issues persist -- Is it just not possible to fix these issues given with what the developers have to work with? No matter the answer, the issues remain. With Madden 13 possibly being the last Madden to be exclusively on the current-gen systems, will we see some of the fixes we have been clamoring for, or do we simply have to put this generation behind us and hope for best on the upcoming new systems?

Without further adieu, here is the top five fixes EA must make for Madden NFL 13.

Newton throws over the middle and it's...blocked by a linebacker leaping 11 feet into the air?

1. Pass Trajectory

Look, it’s a bird, no, it’s a plane, wait…It’s a SUPER LINEBACKER!! Well actually it isn’t. Its not that the linebackers jump too high, it’s how the ball does not arc properly over the second level of the defense. Its like the ball travels on a single plane without variation. Sure, the ball can still be high or low, its just that there is no middle ground. If you are trying to throw the ball over the middle of the field, and if there is anyone within five yards they can easily bat the pass down.

This is an issue that has plagued the series since its debut on the current systems. My fear is that there is simply no way to fix it with the current game engine. I think as Madden fans we have made our voices heard for long enough to reasonable expect a fix this year. If not, then we surely must chalk it up to the unfortunate fact that it is unable to be fixed

2. Revamped Foot planting/Momentum engine

One of the single biggest complaints from Madden detractors and fans alike, is how the current foot planting engine needs a huge upgrade. Since the inception of Madden on our current generation consoles player movements seem to lack momentum. It also seems like a player can zig and zag to avoid contact way to easily, along with being able to turn on a dime. I should not be able to be running towards the sideline as I catch a pass and turn it up the line on a dime. My momentum should carry me out of bounds.

If only this were rendered in real-time...if only.

3. Real Time Physics

The mother of all wish list items. Real time physics could be a game changer if done right. Canned animations, or canimations as the community affectionately likes to call them, are getting old in most gamers eyes. The fact that Madden doesn’t seem to have a large number of them anyway is enough to make you want to pull your hair out. Real time physics could make every tackle, block and interaction unique.

4. The Little Things

Like MLB: The ShowMadden needs the little things. To be blunt, there is no excuse for some things being left out. I want all the penalties. I mean heck, we waited untilMadden 10 to have officials on the field. I want to see an illegal block in the back call on a punt or a kickoff return; I want illegal motion, defensive holding, illegal contact, and for the love of all that is football, make pass interference work. Basically, every penalty in football should be in the game. The challenge system also needs redone. Too many times it doesn’t challenge what you want it to. These are all things that should have been in the game since day one.

Totally willing to settle for less of the same, and more variety too. Deal? DEAL!

5. Animations

Madden suffers greatly from lack of animations. It takes away from the immersion factor. A football game needs to have enough animations where you don’t see the same things over and over. For example, catching animations are so few that you can pretty much see all of them in one game; the same could be said about blocking animations. What might be the biggest area where improvement is needed is tackling. Simply put, there needs to be a ton more tacking animations.

I shouldn’t see the same animations over and over. This, however, brings us to improvement No. 3, real time physics, and the ultimate problem solver to tackling. I want to see specialized animations as well. All 32 starting quarterbacks should have signature throwing animations, and at least most running backs should have their signature running animations, or as close to their real life movements as possible. Wonky running animations have been an issue for years.

Final Thoughts

If there is a negative tone to any of this, it is certainly not my intention. I am just a football game lover like all of us. These five improvements, while mostly gameplay based, are a very small amount of what we, as a community, want to see. I will be very interested to see where the Madden team takes us this year. With next-gen systems looming, will we even see real improvements, or will most of their focus being on the future. With the Super Bowl match up set, it shouldn’t be long before the first info starts to trickle out.

What are your top 5 keys to success for Madden NFL 13?

MANY things I want as well and suggested. Do want.

great list but one thing that is missing is presentation and commentary. the commentary is absolutely terrible. IMO it fails by last gens standards. If you played one game then you pretty much heard all of the commentary (aside from the few exclusive lines for certain teams/players). In my franchise as the lions Suh got injured for a season and every single game gus johnson said the same line "And on defensive we look no further than Ndamukong Suh...". Maybe its because I'm use to NBA 2k's commentary but how can you 1. say the same line every time the defense takes the field for the first time and 2. not acknowledge that the player isn't even active (I'm curious if they would say it if he was traded or no longer on the team).

Presentation has improved over the years but I don't understand how it hasn't even come close to the quality of NFL 2k5; although to be fair 2k5's presentation has an edge over many sports games in certain areas. And does EA still have the ESPN license? Because they have done absolutely nothing in the least bit impressive with that license. 2k5 was the closest a videogame has come to an ESPN style presentation and that game came out over 7 years ago. By now a game of Madden should look like watching a Monday Night Football game.

Commentary and presentation are not "musts" for the success of Madden, IMO. They're bonus, but they're not essential.

i dont have the pass trajectory problem. I am able to throw lobs, mediums, and bullets. I think wrap tackling should be adde to the analog stick with R2 as the aggresive modifier and momentum as the power modifier. i want tight coverage to affect the Qb accuracy so we can lose the mirrored routes...good coverage means good throws have to be made. Lastly, the speed, agility, and in other boosts to the human controlled player should be eliminated.

The list covers the major needs, but here are some minor ones.

#6: Ability to build a new stadium in an existing city.>>
#7: Make weather matter.>>
#8: Control of the schedule in future seasons so that you don't have 5 straight home games followed by 6 straight road games.>>
#9:Active ticker with scores/stats from other games being played concurrently.>>
#10: Stop exiting from a menu back to the default screen. Just step it back to the previous menu like it used to be.>>

As much as I would like to rage against the monopoly that is the EA Sports/NFL partnership I can remember when me & my buddies all had Mattel handheld football & the Coleco handheld came out with the tremendous addition of ..... PASSING!>>
We have come a looooong way from 3 rows of red LEDs to Madden 12 on a 65" HDTV.>>

I hope everybody who saying the ball have trajectory is joking.... that is a SERIOUS joke! There isnt a way to control the ball AT ALL unless your throwing the Cheesy routes. For you guys to even argue that point, the game would have to have more realistic over and under throws which it dont! The ball is NEVER EVER underthrown and when its over thrown its HORRIBLY over thrown. No tutorial is needed, a NEW PASSING SYSTEM IS! The major problem is people want make up fixes ( towels, socks, stadiums, etc) instead of FOOTBALL! I thought the goal of a NFL game is to recreate FOOTBALL! FOOTBALL is broke in these games. 3-4? dont work! Passing? dont work... WR/DB? dont work... O line? dont work... D Line?? dont work... the way to play this game is to cheat it. When i played Madden online it was always a who can out cheat the other person game. I have no hope for the game....matter afact, if EA were SERIOUS about improving their game? Hire a person who ISNT satisfied with madden and bring THEM in to test and try the game. Have a person like me try it out. They have in house Beta testers who is already happy with the product and thats why we keep getting broke games on launch.

I dont have any Madden replays..i'll probably play a game or two in the next two day..and add some replays..but this is an NCAA example. How did it get over the LBs? Why no super LB jump? This is a touch pass, not a full lob, over the lbs. On heisman, QB Acc 35.

As a videogame attempting to simulate the NFL - all of its pagentry, excitement, emotion and joy - Madden (as developed by the current development team) will never be on par with its peers (in other sports), or even a title worthy of the 21st Century for that matter. There is no competition, there is no need for them to add any of these suggestions to acheive success. EA measure success in terms of dollars, marketing, advertising, promotions, branding...there is no other way to find peace with Madden other than to accept these facts.

# 50 DeuceDouglas @ 01/26/12 04:17 AM
The big ones for me are the pass trajectory and the stadium environment. The crowd needs to be LOUD! I'd like to see them bring back the NCAA 06, I think it was, controller and camera shake when you're playing on the road. Have your players routes shake violently and give me a feeling of going up against something out of my control. The passing game needs a total overhaul. From the WR/CB interactions to the OL/DL interaction and then of course the pass trajectory.

As for presentation, the commentary also needs a complete overhaul obviously. I would like to see the pregame intro go back to a more Madden 02-05 intro where they introduce key players rathers than teams. It would make the franchise intro's less stale and as long as they make sure they're not just showing the QB every game it would be cool. I never understood everyone's desire for a halftime highlight show, if I wanted to see the plays from my game I'd watch them on replay. All I want to see is my halftime stats. A score ticker with game's from around the league would be better.

Other than those things I thing the game is pretty good and I still enjoy playing it.

You guys should do one of these for franchise mode.

# 52 cgalligan @ 01/26/12 07:19 AM
1. Footplanting / weight / momentum - For god sakes I'm tired of seeing my guys skate around and move with absolutely no weight / momentum being represented... Players SHOULD NOT be able to weave like the Tecmo Bowl days without slowing down...

2. Ball trajectory - absolute MUST FIX for Madden 13... Last gen Consoles had it correct, and APF2k8 has it perfect on this gen. There is no excuse not to fix this next Season. Hey, EA, in case you haven't noticed while Watching Football on Sunday, it actually IS POSSIBLE to throw the ball over the head of a linebacker...

3. Interaction between OL and DL - As it is now its randomly a Win / Lose for either. There needs to be a struggle. How often do you see OL get beat instantly? How often do you see DL get pancaked instantly? Where is the collapsing pocket?

4. More Animations - since I highly doubt that anything to do with real time physics will ever make its way to this Generations Madden games, the Animations need to be great... Too many times during a game I see the same animation over and over and over again... I can count on 1 hand how many fumble animations there are (both are rather over the top) and also, how many catch animations? tackle animations? throwing animations?

How is it that a Game like NBA 2k can REPLICATE exactly how players move and look on the court, but Madden can't give us more than 2 Different Running Back "types"? Newsflash, Adrian Peterson does not look like Chris Johnson when he runs... He doesn't look like Arian Foster, or Jamaal Charles either...

5. Audio - Custom Stadium sounds anyone? my god NFL 2k5 had this on PS2 / Xbox... You even have it in your NCAA Franchise, why not in Madden?... Don't even get me started on how absolutely terrible the Announcers are in this game... Its so bad I usually play with the game sound OFF and my Radio ON instead... I don't mean to keep going back to this but, NFL 2k5, APF2k8 and NBA 2k completely destroy Madden in this Category...

Along the same lines... I'm in 2 Online Franchises and before every single game for the past 2 months, Collinsworth has been saying "Welcome to the Thanksgiving Game"... What the Hell is that??? Are you kidding me??? Its little things like that, which make you all come off as Lazy...

------

- There is so much more that I would like to talk about, but, based on past experiences with EA, I'm not even going to waste my time... I've seen threads / articles like this for the past 5 years and the game still has some of the worst issues I've ever seen... Sure the graphics look a little better, but, honestly its not good enough to hide all the FUNDAMENTAL FLAWS that this game has... A few years ago they advertised "Everything you See on Sunday", well, as an NFL Season ticket holder, I'm telling you right now that This game does NOT give me that "Sunday" feel... Every single game, whether it be Week 1 of your Online Franchise, a random quick game online, a game vs the Computer or the Super Bowl all feel the same... There really is nothing that separates one game from another and thats just sad...

Maybe they will get this stuff right for PS4 and Xbox720... But I wont hold my breathe on that either because then we're just going to here the "its harder to program for" excuses...

----------

Bring back 2k... Abolish this ridiculous nonsense of the NFL Exclusive License and lets see what someone else can do when given the chance... Have you seen what 2k has done with their Hoops game? Image if they could have been working on their NFL Title for the past 6 or 7 years...

# 53 cgalligan @ 01/26/12 07:26 AM
@inkcil - i agree with you 100%... we see threads like this every year around this time, and every year we get disappointed...

It is what it is... Madden is Madden and they are going to follow the same strategy that they've been following since they signed that exclusive deal with the NFL... They aren't going to spend more money when they don't have to...

Even with all of the issue that people have listed so far, I'll bet if none of them are addressed, the same people (including me) would be lined up at midnight to purchase M13... The only way to change anything would be to not buy the game, but, there is no way thats happening with the insane popularity of the NFL...

Why keep hope for features will never get as long as ea sports has the license

Ugh. I've refrained - until this point - to submit my thoughts about how to fix Madden's next installment. I have been saying the same things for years and frankly I'm tired of hearing the echo in my voice. I think this generation of the series is a write-off. Exclusivity bred complacency. For the sake of trying to be productive and positive, I'll repeat my laundry list of fixes for the next Madden:
1) Commentary. Its the worst in the sports game genre. Make it sound natural and edit phrases together so they flow. Make it dynamic actually tell the story of the game we are playing.
2) Network Precence. Half time/Post game shows and Game Breaks. How this has not been well implemented in 6 + years (The "Extra Point" does not qualify) is beyond me. In this case - do what 2K5 did. Show ALL games, talk about them, stats, hightlights, around the league, injuries, trades, stories, predictions, wrapups. Use tickers to show us whats going on in other games around our leagues. Cut to out of town highlights. Make our leagues feel alive.
3) Physics Engine. Save this for next gen i guess, but Madden needs a true momentum and tackling engine.
4) Gameplay. Keep on buffing the issues out on the gameplay side. The passing trajectory problems. The defensive blocking problems. Foot planting and momentum problems. etc...
5) Details. Players on the side lines reacting to the action on the field. Weather effects changing during a game. Dynamic camera angles that mimic broadcast presentation.

When you jump from game to game, it's not going to feel different. You have to progress through the season to really feel like your playing in the super bowl. You can't expect to just jump right into the super bowl and it feel like a very special event. It's a once a year thing, if something was once a day it wouldn't feel very special.

Yes I know that... I'm talking about when I play through an Online Franchise or Offline Franchise and I'm fortunate enough to make it to the Super Bowl...

Every single game, feels exactly the same... The game itself doesn't make it "feel" like the Super Bowl, I have to that myself by thinking back on everything that I had been through in that Season...

one thing i would like to see in regards to presentation are game winners. a last second or last minute kick be treated as so. amped up celebrations for last minute tds and different celebrations for last second game winning kicks or plays. i want the players to errupt, the commentator to go off and the crowd to tear the roof off the arena

# 59 bigdoc85 @ 01/26/12 11:25 AM
Commentary needs major overhaul

# 60 mrclutch @ 01/26/12 12:02 PM
I agree with 99% of the OP. This is first year in a long time I laid down my Madden before the playoffs. This years game had really no improvements that mattered to me. (not a big better looking grass man) Another stale up date to last years game.
