For now what we'll be doing here at Operation Sports is posting a quick look detailing some of our initial thoughts on sports titles at E3. Once we play more of these games throughout the week we will post more fleshed out hands-on impressions this week and next.
In addition, if you have questions about the game you would like us to ask developers, feel free to post them. We can't guarantee we'll get them answered -- and it's probably better to not get too crazy specific -- but what we do get answered we'll post here on OS as well at some point. The same goes for if you just want to hear more about something we talked about in the article(s). For example, "hey dude, you talked about how the dribbling feels different, can you talk more about that?"
FIFA comes into this season with the standard issue of having a good gameplay formula that needs to be refined and improved without chapping the base group of fans. Of course, when you have millions of people who play your game, it's always hard to know who makes up that base, but right now FIFA is toying with the formula in some interesting ways.

After three years of sort of hiding at E3, NBA Live 16 and the development team working on the title are finally showing off. If anything, that is a good sign that the folks at EA Tiburon finally have enough confidence in the title to stand by it in a public setting where everyone can get as much hands-on time as they want.
-You can only pick from the Warriors and Cavaliers in this demo, but what's immediately striking is how amazing the players on both teams look, both in the 3-D modeled starting lineups screens and then once you see them in action on the court. NBA 2K player models look amazing, but NBA Live player models also now look spectacular -- yet in a completely different way. The differing lighting and art directions for each game make both look impressive in different ways, which is great.
-Dribble pull-ups have improved year over year. I used the Warriors a bunch in my sessions today and running full speed into a pull-up feels smoother, and the transition animations from sprinting to shooting were meshing well.
-The Live team is really pushing the new physics-based animation system that ties together with their motion capture to create thousands of new animations. I can't claim to see thousands of new animations, but drives to the hoop are leading to more two-man interactions. On the second drive to the hoop, there was a big-time swat off the glass by Draymond Green on Kyrie Irving, which is progress for this title.
-I would say around the rim is still where the game is weakest: I trust the CPU/AI more than myself to box out and grab rebounds. Some of the putback layup and shot animations don't look especially great -- partly because the ball looks odd coming out of the player's hand based on the trajectory of the ball and so forth.
-Off-ball movement on offense is more noticeable by default now (don't have to select quick options to push the guys to move on offense). I'll be diving deeper into this because I was seeing lots off-ball screens for Klay and Barnes as some sort of base set. I would wonder if there are team-specific default motion sets and so on. Also, there's no ability to call plays in this demo so you're doing pick and rolls or defaulting to these quick sets that are automatically happening on the court.
-Speaking of the pick and roll, changing up how you call for picks was the right call. I'll be looking more into how to defend the pick and rolls and so on at the show, but as a core concept it feels like the right direction. In short, you're clicking in the L3 button to change from a roll to fade now. I'll also be checking in on how specific you can get in terms of choosing which side the pick should be set.
-Touch passing and quicker passing overall feels better in Live. I wouldn't go as far as calling it super quick and "fixed" now, but it's better. What I would say so far is I don't think you can quite ping the ball side to side like the Spurs or Hawks, but swinging the ball in a calculated fashion off the pick and roll felt much better.
-It's been a struggle on defense for me so far. Staying in front of my man was somewhat of a challenge, especially with more noticeable bits of explosion from ball handlers. I know this is at least partly on me because I can honestly say I still don't quite get the best times to move my defender via the right stick versus holding the defensive stance button, turbo, etc. At the same time, perhaps that is partly on EA as well for not explaining it as well as they could to this point.
-Getting back to players feeling more explosive with the ball in their hand. It's funny to me, but right now I notice the explosion of players going from 0-100 -- which is good -- and yet the player movement still feels a bit sluggish. I'm still wrestling with why that is so far, but perhaps it's because it almost feels like ball handlers go slowly from 0 to 25 mph, and then it gets floored from 25 to 100 mph.
-Signature shots are more noticeable, though I would say I really struggled with shot timing today. This is again something I want to get more hands-on with (it's not inherently a bad thing if this is challenging!), and in addition want to talk to the development team about in terms of how the UI on-screen is explaining what you're doing wrong. It's not necessarily crystal clear to me what the UI is telling me, but I also did not go through the tutorial elements that probably would explain it all for those that are confused. Again though, this doesn't let EA completely off the hook either way.
Early Outlook
Right now, I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about Live 16. It's certainly not going backwards, and it already feels like the biggest year-over-year leap improvement in the three years of its "rebirth" during this era. At the same time, it's one of those things where you get burned so many times by one game that, especially after only a couple games, I feel it would be downright irresponsible to say something like "Live is back guys!" Plus, I don't even know what that phrase would mean at this point because it's hard to say what the "golden era" is of Live now. Instead, what I'll say is I'm hoping what I've experienced so far is not some sort of mirage and that the core of this game is finally getting itself on solid hardwood. (I'll see myself to the door after choosing to end with that wordplay.)

Game Informer has posted an article listing off 60 Things We Know About NHL 16. It's worth combing through the list to see if there's anything new that sticks out to you.
In particular, one note that I found interesting is that EASHL teams that have come back year after year may end up having their team name recorded in-game by the commentators. In other words, teams that have really stuck together and most likely been big supporters of the mode may find some love from the development team via this little audio nugget. I hope to find team names like "Tickle Monsters" (but hopefully none having to do with 'QC') that I can tag to my EASHL team once I check out the returning EASHL mode in NHL 16, releasing on September 15.

EA Sports has revealed the ways you can pre-order NHL 16 when it releases on September 15, again, should you choose to go that route.
- By just pre-ordering the game you can get the 15 HUT Gold packs in the "standard" edition.
- If you own NHL 15 and digitally pre-order NHL 16 via the PSN or Xbox Live stores, you get 10 HUT Gold packs immediately upon booting up NHL 16.
- If you pre-order through EB Games/Gamestop, then you get one HUT Gold pack per week for 25 weeks.
The "legacy" edition is for those folks out there still rocking the Xbox 360 or PS3:
- There is an inconsistency here in that the image says you will get 15 HUT Gold packs immediately, while the text on EA's site says you will get one Gold pack per week for 15 weeks. So as of now, your guess is as good as mine in terms of which is true.
- If you pre-order from EB Games/Gamestop, then you get one HUT Gold pack per week for 25 weeks (which makes me believe with the non-Gamestop offer mentioned above you probably get one Gold pack per week for 15 weeks rather than 15 Gold packs immediately).

EA has detailed the three different ways you can pre-order FIFA 16 (if you want to go down that route), which will be released on September 22.
The standard edition is posted above, and the "deluxe" and "super deluxe" editions can be seen below:
Our Take: In short, it's a FIFA Ultimate Team world and we're just living in it. However, this isn't anything new and crazy, just business as usual. Most EA Sports games allow you to acquire added Ultimate Team content at a general discounted rate if you pay up front by pre-ordering the game.
As of now, the links to the pages where you could find out how much each of these editions of FIFA 16 will cost appear to be down right now, but when they're working again we will update this post to provide the pricing. Also, as is now the case it seems, if you are an EA Access member on Xbox One you get 10 percent off on your purchase through the Microsoft digital download store. Plus, you get that same 10 percent off any FIFA Points purchases (the in-game currency used for FUT) you make. Of course, that 10 percent seems only fitting since you pay five dollars a month for EA Access.

Sean O'Brien, executive producer on NBA Live 16, decided to show off the team's new face-scanning tech, dubbed GameFaceHD, at the start of the presentation. It will be a companion app you can download before the game comes out, according to O'Brien.
In practice, it all looked very simple. You take your phone, hold it up to your face -- halting to look left and right before looking back to the center -- before that image is then uploaded on the app within a couple minutes. From there, it was not made clear how this image then makes it into the game, but presumably the image of your face is brought over to NBA Live 16 by tying your EA account on the app to the same EA account you use in various EA games.
The example they showed did look very impressive in-game, and if the process is truly as seamless as it seemed this will be a nice upgrade to the old "GameFace" tech that EA used in the past. In addition, one can only assume that on some level all this focus on bringing your own character into the world will lead to some sort of "Be A Pro" online mode, but as of now EA is only saying a new NBA Live mode will be revealed later this year.
Lastly, you have to wonder if this tech will slowly makes its way to other EA Sports games in the future.

EA is just releasing a deluge of official blogs, this one in particular being the Draft Champions blog. I won't steal all their thunder as you can read about it at your leisure, but here's the general point:
|
|||||||||
|
Our Take: At the end of the day, it's a middle-ground between Ultimate Team and doing a full-on Fantasy Draft like you would at the start of your Connected Franchise mode. It seems to be a very light time commitment in the grand scheme of things, which seems to be the aim. I think it personally speaks to those people who like the idea of Ultimate Team but don't like the grind. Or on another level, those that like Ultimate Team but more like just changing out their players all the time.
You go through 15 rounds and can upgrade a base team that is pre-drafted for you. The players you choose from each time will be random, so there's no guessing how many chances you will get to take an upgraded QB and so on. This is especially important because it's not like a regular fantasy draft where the best players go in Round 1 and you're picking up scraps by Round 15. Instead, it will rise and fall throughout the draft.
At the end, in the "solo" version you try to win three games in a row against better and better CPU teams -- one loss knocks you out. If you play a multiplayer version, it appears you're trying to win four games in a row without losing. If you do lose, your team vanishes and you draft again. I would assume here that by winning the "championship" would gain you more in-game currency that can be used in Ultimate Team -- but that's just a guess.

Players On The Rise
Young starting pitchers began to see some love this week in the latest Diamond Dynasty update. Chris Archer has been an incredible pitcher this season and finally got another major uptick in his ratings. Beyond that, Sonny Gray (arguably even more ignored so far) also got a nice boost to his Overall rating in this week's update.
I'm really happy that Brian Dozier finally went Gold this week as well. I had predicted he would go Gold for weeks, and of course the week I don't put him in my predictions is the week he goes Gold (you're welcome Brian).
A.J. Pollock also continued his meteoric rise as he went Gold today. Albert Pujols returned to the throne and became a Gold as well. Lastly, Mark Melancon re-captured his Silver status this week.

We're wrapping up another week in the Diamond Dynasty universe, and the only card pack released over the weekend was the Draft Sleepers pack, which made some Silver and Bronze players very affordable. With that being said, it's time to look ahead once again and try to predict who might be getting a ratings boost Monday morning.
I'll be breaking the predictions into tiers based on my own confidence level.
Ratings Boost Probability: High
-Josh Donaldson - Donaldson has amazing numbers no matter how you break them down. This month he's got nine home runs to go along with stellar numbers in just about every other category.
-Sonny Gray - The next three are a trio of awesome young starters. (I included all of them in my predictions article last week as well.) Gray has put up his standard dominant numbers this month and more than ever feels ripe for a ratings boost.
-Gerrit Cole - Cole has five wins in the last 30 days. Even if I discount his 10th win on Saturday, he's still had an impressive month and is an early contender for the NL Cy Young award.
-Chris Archer - In the past month, Archer has four wins, 55 strikeouts in 41 innings pitched, and a WHIP under one. Decent.
-Mark Melancon - Melancon has not allowed an earned run in a month, and he's 12 for 12 in save opportunities during that time.
-Carlos Martinez - Martinez is another player I thought could have gotten a boost last week. Nothing has made me believe otherwise this week.
-Joe Panik - Panik is hitting .350 the last month, and he's just become a very dangerous middle infielder.
-Cameron Maybin - Maybin has always been a player I want to see succeed so it's great he's putting together a solid season now with Atlanta. In the past month, he's got eight stolen bases, he's hitting .365, and now his average is up over .300 on the season.

Will there be new moves/dekes added to NHL 16 ? There was very little variety in NHL 15.
Yes. We have added new moves as well as updated the controls to ensure greater consistency and control when attempting the moves. The mechanic does a better job of giving you control over your stick and skates so that you can toe drag and finish straight, further out to the side or even cut back the other way depending on the way you drag with your right stick and the direction you are headed with your left stick. The same goes for moves from your backhand side. Along with these updates we also looked at the consistency of stride dekes to ensure you weren't triggering them by accident but still able to use them in the right situations.
Will Rogers arena have the stanchion lights?
Yes. Our rendering team did a great job with this feature. We also have authentic animation patterns and coloring for intros and goal events in NHL 16.
Will we have the ability to edit player ratings in NHL 16?
Yes this is something we have added to NHL 16. There is more information about it here.
Do you have the New York Islanders "Yes Yes Yes" crowd chant after they score a goal in NHL 16?
Yes! Yes! Yes we do!
As said there will be unique parts of a stadium, such a lighthouse in Minnesota. Will there be unique goal songs as well? Much like Chelsea dagger in Chicago?
For NHL 16 we do have the lighthouse in Minnesota and we've been fortunate to license many authentic goal songs this year including Chelsea Dagger for Chicago. We’ll have more information about other team goal songs coming soon.
Will Chelsea Dagger be played when the Blackhawks score a goal?
Yes Chelsea Dagger will be played when the Blackhawks score in NHL 16. We are doing our best this year to get goal moments for each team as authentic as possible. We’ll have more information about presentation features for other teams as we get closer to launch.
Are there any right-stick only dekes, or can auto-deke do everything?
In NHL 16 we have expanded the right stick deking system from NHL 15 to correspond with what you are doing with your left stick/skating motion. This gives you control of what you want to do with your stick and your skates separately. For example, you can toe drag with the right stick and select what direction you want to go with the left stick.

The NHL 16 team continues to answer questions about the game at their Ask EA page. The Q&A is copied and pasted below for easier reading.
Will there be goalie injuries in off line modes?
If games are simmed during the off line modes there are goalie injuries. During gameplay we do not have goalie injuries.
Will single player tournaments be available in HUT 16 under "Play Solo"? This is the feature i'm missing most. As someone who loves playing the CPU, the tournament win bonus was the main reason I could actually build a nice team in earlier versions of NHL.
Hi Jason, glad you asked! In HUT 16, we are introducing Single Player Seasons for the first time. It has very similar aspects to the old Offline Tournaments with the ability to work your way through higher divisions. On top of this, we are also bringing back entry criteria to help keep things interesting.
Love seeing EASHL is coming back. My biggest complain with it is that it doesn't play like any of the other modes / real NHL, no reason to dump for a line change, get on fresh players when stamina is low. It's essentially a game no line changes enabled. Can we ever expect to see a line change feature in EASHL, so that the captain calls for a change, you skate to the bench and your player comes back out with fresh legs, more stamina? I'm not saying have reserve players or sitting on the bench, but just something that captures the flow of a game more accurately than skating around, always pushing into the offensive zone.
Hi TK, thanks for your question. Line changes is something that does come up in our design discussions. I can definitely see your point but it does have some design drawbacks that we have to be careful with. This is something we will continue to look into.
How will the draft look and will be able to pick our players/trade our picks or will it be simulated?
Last year after NHL 15 was released we put in a patch a whole new Entry Draft experience for our users, allowing users to make their own picks as well as trading their picks to other teams. This will be in NHL 16 for you to use to draft your up and coming stars.
What will we see in the way of tutorials for those of us new to the series?
In NHL 16 we have a new feature called On-Ice Visual Trainer which is meant to allow all players (regardless of skill level) compete at a higher level by teaching them the controls through visual aids. These aids are adaptive so that as you learn each of the controls, you continuously advance to more complex moves.
In NHL15 online team play is plagued with too many player collisions. Has this been identified as an issue to be fixed for NHL 16?
Yes, with the return of EASHL, there has been a big focus on balance and behavior making the game fun to play from every position in an online multiplayer space. Part of this has been tuning core gameplay elements/factors such as player physics and collisions. We have not only tuned the balance of how prepared players are in different situations for collisions but also added more variety in reactions at lower levels so that even when players do collide, they don't have to be as extreme as they were in NHL 15. Small stumbles have helped these incidental collisions as well as allowed big power forwards to protect the puck when turning their back to a defensive player to absorbing impacts better.
Will teams sit on the correct players benches this year?
We have gone through all of the stadiums and tried to update them to be as authentic as possible. The art and rendering teams did an amazing job in NHL 15 capturing the architectural likeness of all of the licensed buildings but this year was more about taking them to the next level with behavior and interaction and they have met and surpassed the mark once again. In NHL 16 you will see players on the correct benches, using the proper tunnels for the home and away teams, updated banners to be as authentic as possible and many other stadium accents to add more life into each of the arenas.
Has any work been done to avoid pucks and sticks going through legs, net, board?
We are always adding improvements within physics for collision detection. We have also improved the detection of stick on stick & stick on body collisions to tune when pucks get dislodged/collide per game style. We have also added the ability to tune how stick on stick contact effects puck control from different angles to simulate the strength the defender would have vs. the offensive player. These are the types of improvements you can expect to see in NHL 16.
With the NBC package, will there be warm ups, league updates, player/coach interviews, national anthems?
For NHL 16 we have worked closely with NBC and have received great support to update the in-game broadcast package to better match the authenticity of what they rolled out this past January on their network. On top of that, Doc and Eddie will have a lot more pre-game analysis to cover your team and your opponents as you play through a season and for specific match-ups. We don't have interviews this year but you will see the players skating around pre-game as the commentary team focuses on the teams/players complete with spot lights, team props raising to the rafters, crowd flags and unique effects whenever authentic to the team.
Has there been any server upgrades to help with lag issues?
Yes. With more and more people playing online every day, we're continuously trying to improve our online experience.
Will Custom Soundtracks be possible in NHL16?
This year our focus was to get music to make our in-arena experience as authentic as possible. Unfortunately, Custom Soundtracks will not be in NHL 16.
Will be a Pro include the All-Star game?
The All-Star game will not be a part of Be A Pro this year however it is something we will continue to look into.

Players On The Rise
Diamond players rejoice! Paul Goldschmidt is the first player who started as a Diamond when the season began to now see a major uptick in his ratings during the season. This is not a surprise and a surprise all at once. Goldschmidt has been a monster all season, but it was coming to a point where the question was simply becoming, "maybe his track record says he's already amazing, so why does he need anymore boosts?" Regardless, his time is now.
A.J. Pollock was another member of the Diamondbacks who got some love this week. Other big winners include Joc Pederson no longer needing a platoon partner, Evan Gattis getting a power boost, Tyler Clippard taking back his Gold status a week after losing it, and Jeurys Familia finally getting a big boost and going Gold.
The biggest winners this week were Chris Colabello and Billy Burns who each received a plus-10 week over week in Overall rating.

It's fair to say people in these parts are hungry for any and every piece of NBA 2K16 info at this point. So Zach Timmerman, a producer on NBA 2K16, rolled into his office on Sunday morning. He noticed his version of the game had finished building and was like, "oh snap, guess that means I didn't break anything major by adding these new animations. Time to tweet!" (Okay, I don't actually know if he said any of this but go with me here.) But okay, on a slightly more serious note obviously seeing this little snapshot of the development process is good times. When marketers hype up the fact that a new sports game has "hundreds of new animations!" it sort of gets lost on most of us because we can't really discern what that means and what they really impacted. But when it's specific like this, it at least gives folks something easier to grasp. In other words, it maybe does not sound as "wow-worthy" but it actually means something much more tangible.
So this sounds like good news to us as the post-up game is always in need of love as it's all about moves, double moves and variety overall to keep the cat and mouse game going.
How did you folks feel about the post game anyway in NBA 2K15?

Another week is almost wrapped up in Diamond Dynasty, and the biggest thing that happened over the weekend was that the May Topps 50 card pack was released. It didn't impact the marketplace too heavily, which I'm sure made some happy and others not so much. Nevertheless, it's time to look ahead once again and try to predict who might be getting a ratings boost Monday morning.
I'll be breaking the predictions into tiers based on my own confidence level.
Ratings Boost Probability: High
-A.J. Pollock - After a slow start, Pollock has had an unbelievable turnaround. On top of hitting .340 over the last month, he has nine stolen bases and six home runs. Mark Trumbo was just traded as well so that just clears up even more space for Pollock. In other words, Pollock is now bonified in Arizona.
-Billy Burns - Burns has put in work as well over the last month. He's not hitting for as much power as Pollock, but he's got the average and steals to go along with a very low rating right now in The Show.
-Sonny Gray - Gray is young, he's top 10 in just about every pitching category out there and has only received a plus-one boost to this point in the season.
-Gerrit Cole - Everything I said about Gray also applies to Cole. His boost was a more aggressive plus-four, but he's still got room to be improved as he's probably the top pitcher in the NL so far.
-Mark Melancon - Melancon was a mess early in the year, but he's bounced back and should at least get back the ratings points he lost earlier in the year.
-Carlos Martinez - Cardinals players are getting love almost every week, but Martinez probably deserves to join the party as he's dominated over the last month. It also probably helps he was downgraded earlier in the season.
-Dallas Keuchel - Keuchel's peripheral stats are not as impressive as those of Cole and Gray (that groundball rate though!), but he's still doing amazing work this season. He's become a Gold already, but he's still got room to grow based on how he's pitching.
-Brian Dozier - He was in the May Topps 50 pack for top performers; he's top 20 in WAR; and he's just good so it's time to make him a Gold.
-Joc Pederson - Pederson hit some insane moonballs this week and just keeps chugging along.
