The Waiver Wire has returned after yet another hiatus. The show returns with a new co-host (Wil McCombs) along with the returning Chase Becotte. They talk about NBA Live, NBA 2K and FIFA game sales before discussing MLB Stickball and the recently announced MLB Front Office Manager. Later, Chase talks with Matt Blumenthal about NBA Live 09 and Richard Chavez about NBA 2K9. Wil and Chase return for the end of the show where they talk a little about Tokyo Game Show gaming news and what games they've been playing.

We have just posted our Q&A session with NBA Live 09 Synergy Sports Creator, Garrick Barr.

Quote:
Operation Sports: "For those unconvinced, why is Synergy Sports the most authentic statistics and tendencies driver for the AI in NBA LIVE 09?"

Garrick Barr: "The answer is simple: we log every event of every NBA game to produce incredibly accurate data on what players actually do both on offense and on defense. This data is comprehensive and has become indispensable to almost every NBA team as they use our services for everything from evaluating players to winning games."

The Oklahoma City Thunder unveiling was about as surprising as Larry Brown getting another head coaching job (read: not at all). Whether it was the name, or the logo, or even how the squad looked in a video game -- it has all been revealed before the planned dates. However, EA Sports is taking it in stride, and has now sent over some "official" screens of the OKC Thunder in NBA Live 09. EA also answered a few OS community questions about the Thunder, which you all check out below.

OS Community: Will you guys be able to patch in the court design and the arena, or just the uniforms/logo?

EA Sports: Uniforms/logo/court (not arena).

OS: Will Steve Kerr and Marv Albert announce Oklahoma City as the Thunder or will they just call the team Oklahoma City?

EA: We recorded OKC and the Thunder with Marv.

OS: How did the process go when you folks were trying to get this information into the game? Was the NBA very helpful or was it a bit of an arduous process due to the secrecy issue?

EA: NBA was helpful, but main struggle was that the move to OKC happened very late in our production cycle.

OS: How about the Thunder organization? Did they reach out to try and make sure you folks had everything you needed, or did you just deal with the NBA when handling this process?

EA: We just dealt with the NBA.

On the heels of that segment is a NHL 2K9/NHL 09 demo discussion among Chase, Erik Westfall and Matt Blumenthal. Finally, in the last segment we are including an NHL 2K9 conference call with producer Ben Bishop. Podcast revival! In this week's podcast Matt Gagnon and Chase Becotte renew their love for podcasting and discuss the new format of the show before talking about some news (see: not much to work with this week). Nevertheless they talk about Bocci Baseball, MaddenFrom there Chase moves on to talk with the Lead Designer on patches, EA Tennis, and what they've been playing recently. Facebreaker Todd Batty, as they discuss the looming Freestyle-branded title set to release next week. Chase hops from there over to Dave Branda's domain to gab about FIFA 09 and the newly-added Live Season feature. After talking about FIFA 09, Chase gets a hankering for some physicality and so he talks with Richard Chavez about TNA Impact! since Richard recently had hands-on with the title. The folks up at EA Canada are nearing their goal as NHL 09 skates towards its September release. They are undoubtedly working very hard since they have a hard act to follow considering how well NHL 08 was received by most gamers. Also, with such high expectations, it's no surprise that the OS community has tons of questions when it comes to NHL 09. Due to this fact, we here at Operation Sports felt it was important to get the NHL developers to answer some questions from the Operation Sports community. So every Friday, until NHL 09 releases, OS will be running five-question-Q&A sessions with NHL 09 developers. This is the fourth Q&A session we have had thus far. Enjoy!

Recently Chase Becotte checked out NBA 2K9 and then came back on the forums and answered a ton of questions about the game. Now, with so many previews being released during this week -- mostly rehashing the same info -- Chase thought it would be better to just post some of the best questions and answers from the community thread and post an article for convenience. Check out the collection of NBA 2K9 Community Questions now!

Our string of previews continues this week with our very own Chase Becotte taking a look at NBA Live 09 and giving his thoughts on what he saw with the game last week. Be sure to check out his thoughts in our NBA Live 09 Updated Hands-On Preview.

Quote:
"NBA Live 09 could end up being its own worst enemy. This year, as the Live feature set continues to balloon and impress, the gameplay has to try and keep up. Let’s not forget that just two years ago the Live series was in shambles; but, while the gameplay has been re-created during the last few years, the feature set has been going full speed ahead -- especially this year. We’ve talked about Online Team Play and Live 365 on OS in the past, so I’m not going to regurgitate info about those features, but keep the Live feature set in the back of your head as you read this, because it’s an important part of my original point."

Our very own Chase Becotte recently got a chance to go hands on with Pure and checks in today with his thoughts on the multiplayer portion of the game. Check out his Pure Multiplayer Hands-On Preview.

Quote:
"Black Rock Studio has set out to unearth its ATV routes by making a game being published by Disney Interactive Studios: Pure. PS2 vets should remember UK-based Black Rock Studio for making ATV Off-Road Fury, and the inevitable sequels. At a recent event I had a chance to check out the multiplayer portion of Pure. Thoughts incoming!"

As we continue our series of previews this week, Chase Becotte checks in with a look at EA Sports' newest hockey title NHL 09 in his hands-on preview.

Quote:
"The NHL 09 team isn’t falling into a trap this year, even though, according to EA, NHL 08 won something like seven sports game of the year awards in 2008. Before I recently got my hands on the game though, I’ll be honest and say I was a little bit worried about NHL 09. As remarkable as some of the new online features sounded, the gameplay didn’t look that different in videos. It still seemed to be based around dishing up the wing, skating in, and firing on helpless goaltenders who would inevitably be facing a barrage of shots for the entirety of the game. You’d think at this point I would know better than to assume things before getting hands-on time with a game."

We have just posted a hands-on preview for FIFA 09 after our very own Chase Becotte got to have some time with the game. Be sure to check back all week as Chase got to see several other games last week and will be posting other previews on them through the week!

Quote:
"Since moving over to next-gen, FIFA has struggled to create an experience that relies on skills and creativity rather than exploits and “money” tactics. Whether it was the ping-pong passing down the field or the bang ball up the sides of the pitch, FIFA has struggled to make itself seem like the real thing. The organic nature of soccer is certainly hard to re-create, but the developers of FIFA have taken strides with FIFA 09 to not only remove “money” tactics, but also create an experience that finally lives up to the promises of next-gen gameplay."

The Facebreaker demo was released today and for the first time ever, many potential fans are getting their hands on EA Freestyle's new game which could very well become Freestyle's poster boy. In his article today, Chase Becotte explains why Facebreaker is EA's most important title they are releasing this year.

Quote:
"I have been waiting to write about Facebreaker at length since E3, not because I didn’t have anything to say about the game, but because I didn’t want to just do a basic like-dislike-fact-fact-dislike preview. That’s not to say I won’t be doing that in this article to an extent (it was my sports game of the show after all), but I waited to write about this game because I truly think that Facebreaker is EA’s most important sports title this year."
