If NASCAR Kart Racing was an athlete, it would be Kyle Korver. In other words, it is far from being a big deal but is still quite serviceable.

NASCAR Kart Racing is a clone of Mario Kart, for better or worse. The big problem is that NASCAR Kart Racing does not do kart racing quite as well as Mario Kart does kart racing. But, I would be lying if I said I did not enjoy the game -- some of the gameplay mechanics were relatively fun, and the control scheme works really well.

Call it what you want, but 3-on-3 NHL Arcade is EA's first attempt at bridging the gap that separates the fans and non-fans of hockey.

So, mission accomplished?

While 3-on-3 NHL Arcade is not a bad game -- it technically plays well and really is kind of fun -- it just does not have any lasting appeal.

If I used baseball terms to describe last year's MLB: The Show, I would say it was a solidly hit ball that drove in a few runs.

After playing the demo for MLB 09: The Show, I think the term I might use to describe this year's game is walk-off grand slam.

Now, this is a demo, and I know that, but the stage is set for what might be the best sports game to come around in quite some time. There are lingering questions, such as how the stat engine will work and how good the Franchise mode improvements are, among other things.

However, make no mistake about it, this game will be money -- pure, unlimited, beautiful money.

Tonight we bring you a very special edition -- at least in the host's mind -- of the Waiver Wire Podcast with Chris Sanner filling Chase Becotte's shoes to interview 3 on 3 NHL Arcade Producer Matt Mahar. We would like to thank Alan Quinto of EA Sports for helping get this interview and we would also like to thank Matt Mahar for taking the time to answer our questions!

The show runs right at 10 minutes so if you want the latest skinny on the game, be sure to give this show a listen!

Important edit: On the show I stated the game was set to release on February 15. It is actually set to release on February 4 for the 360 and the 5th for the PS3.

We received an interview which EA Manager Alan Quinto interviews NHL Producer Matt Mahar to discuss the upcoming 3 on 3 NHL Arcade release. While it is unique that we are posting an interview EA did with itself, there is some very good information within the interview which acts as a beefed up press release. Be sure to give it a look if you are interested in the game.

It seems as if almost everyone important is on Twitter, except Operation Sports that is. Of course, starting today just about everyone important is now on Twitter since Operation Sports has decided to join the age and create a twitter account.

If you want to get Tweets anytime we update the front page here at OS, be sure to add OperationSports on Twitter (our username).

If you have been living underneath a rock and are not quite sure what Twitter is, it is basically the newest hot social network. Twitter does one thing, it asks you "What are you doing" and asks you to give a response (aka a Tweet) in 140 characters or less.

This concept has struck a chord with millions of users so far since you can use a mobile device, a computer, and just about everything else imaginable to Tweet. So be sure to add OperationSports to stay plugged into what is going on around here!

It certainly looks like we know why EA dumped the AFL license. Check out the link from the Rocky Mountain News:

Quote:
"Arena Football League officials are expected to announce before the end of the week the league will suspend play for the 2009 season, the Rocky Mountain News has learned.

That will leave open dates at the Pepsi Center, where the AFL's Colorado Crush has played since 2003.

In summer 2002, the franchise was introduced by former Broncos quarterback John Elway, in a partnership with Broncos owner Pat Bowlen and Kroenke Sports Enterprises owner Stan Kroenke."

It seems that EA Sports got the message after OS gave last year's edition of March Madness a four out of 10 rating. The embarrassment was too much to handle and thus, EA had to change the name of the franchise from March Madness to NCAA Basketball.

In reality, with no other competition on the market, there is no reason to fear calling your game something generic like NCAA Basketball 09. But, does the name change equate to real change when it comes to the direction of the series? It seems as if the game has taken two steps forward, but it is still being weighed down by the same issues that have been plaguing EA basketball for half a decade.

NCAA Basketball is a big improvement over last year's March Madness in almost every way. This improvement makes NCAA Basketball one of the best college basketball experiences on a next-gen console. Is it the best yet? Probably not, but the game is certainly a big step in the right direction.

We have posted our review of NBA Live 09.

Quote:
"At one time, NBA Live was the king of basketball games. Not only was the game the best around quality-wise, but it also sold in large numbers to anxious fans nationwide.

As of late, the Live series has fallen on hard times. The game still sells well, but the first two editions on next-gen consoles were atrocious. NBA Live 08 began to bring the series out of the gutter, but there was still plenty of work to do. Enter NBA Live 09."

I currently have NBA Live and am prepping for the review to be released on Tuesday. In the meantime I have written up a quick set of impressions for anyone interested in them!

Quote:
"-So far, the game is definitely an improvement over 08, but it's not a groundbreaking title.
-You still get stuck in animations and the game isn't very fluid at times as a result.

-Graphics are still solid, animations are pretty varied."

We have posted our review of Facebreaker.

Quote:
"EA hoped that Facebreaker would be an easy to play and fun game that would launch the EA Freestyle Brand. EA did great job delivering on the former but completely forgot about the latter.

Facebreaker is fun for the first few fights, but you end up wanting more depth after a short time playing the game. The game traps itself and ends up being too simple for its own good -- there is very little strategy involved in playing the game, minus timing blocks and mashing the crap out of the punch buttons."

Take Two's stock is down 27% after news was broken yesterday that EA was no longer interested in purchasing the company. The stock's value is down to 15.93, which is just slightly higher than what it was before EA entered into talks of a merger with the company. You can track Take Two's stock here.

What happens when you try to mix the real college game with NCAA Football 09? You get the weekly series which Chris Sanner is going to be writing for Fridays during this college football season, That Crazy College Game. Be sure to add your own two cents and let him know what you think!

Quote:
"I am admittedly one week late with this, as I didn't get the memo that most other teams in college football were actually playing meaningful games last week.

As an Oklahoma Sooner fan, I can honestly say that I enjoyed our open scrimmage last week since most fans got to see absolutely nothing through most of spring and fall due to closed practices. However, now I'm ready for a true game."
