Sixty years ago, a player-manager from the Cleveland Indians named Lou Bodreau came up with a defensive strategy to stop Ted Williams' brilliant hitting.
At the time, Williams was playing some of the best baseball ever -- even compiling a .408 batting average in a single season.
In an attempt to stop Williams, Bodreau came up with a defensive shift which was unorthodox but ended up effective:
The shift has taken over baseball this year. The number of balls in play hit with a defensive shift on went from under 5% in 2011 to almost 30% of all balls in play this year.
As offensive numbers go down, there is some talk of banning the shifts in order to boost offensive numbers as one of many rules changes.
But so long as they're here, are you using defensive shifts in MLB The Show 16? If so, how effective have they been vs. a more traditional defensive alignment?

The future of college sports video games is murky at best after the Supreme Court refused to hear the Ed O'Bannon case.
At this point, that means the O'Bannon case as currently decided is how things are. At this time the ruling stands as follows (Per the USA Today article linked above):
|
|||||||||
|
For college video games to return will require a couple of things.
First, EA (or another publisher) will have to know there is no threat of litigation to proceed. Second, schools will want to know there is no threat of litigation to proceed as well.
Several schools began to pull out of EA's next gen college football title at the end, and that was one of several items which led EA to scrap the title. In an era of video games where people obsess over the authenticity of shoes and haircuts, having generic teams (and players) seems like a hard thing to sell.
What would lead to a game being possible is likely a resolution from the NCAA and member schools allowing players to get money for licensing their image -- which it seems there isn't much movement on at this time. While its a good thought to think that people would buy a game with generic teams and players with customization -- those types of games have never sold enough in the marketplace to justify high development costs required of AAA sports titles in 2016.
In short, without a way to license players officially (along with schools) its doubtful we see college sports games return to consoles.

As I dive into NBA 2K17, I'm reminded once again about how deep the modes in the game are. Right now, look for my full review of NBA 2K17 sometime around Tuesday.
For now, if you are unsure about whether you are jumping in or not, here's a look at a few quick impressions after a few games:
NBA 2K17 is looking like a winner on the court at least. The game right now seems to have done a lot more right than wrong, but we still have a lot of time until the final review is published. For now, I'm definitely optimistic about NBA 2K17's prospects.
For now, if you are unsure about whether you are jumping in or not, here's a look at a few quick impressions after a few games:
- The gameplay and presentation still continue to be just so smooth. Its not like that wasn't expected but it does need to be stated for the record. There's a lot more to explore on the court but I'm definitely hooked to the on-court gameplay.
- Look-wise, the game looks better with more varied body types as one addition. The other tweaks are adding nice touches as well. Overall the game looks a hair better than last year.
- There are still instances where you get stuck in animations -- I had one instance at the end of a game I drove the lane and tried to fire up a quick shot at the buzzer and instead my player went into a lengthy drive-layup animation which resulted in time expiring before the shot went up. That wasn't particularly good considering I was in a position to win the game.
- Commentary seems solid enough still. I haven't played enough to form a good judgement on it but I don't see any reason after a few more games I won't be coming away with a positive vibe.
- The only mode I've dove into enough to write anything on has been MyPLAYER. The story and background are a fun setup but the mode has some serious issues which I think will leave me thinking its a negative this year. I'll need to play a bit more but it just feels the mode goes out of its way to mire you in tedium.
- I played a game of 1-on-1 in MyPLAYER and it felt just so right. To me its impressive the game can play a good brand of basketball be it 5-on-5, 3-on-3, or 1-on-1. That means its getting a few things right with gameplay.

The color rush uniforms are here for Madden NFL 17 -- and there are a few which are clearly excellent and a few that may make your TV explode.
Listen, these rankings are entirely subjective -- but let's be honest about one thing: the color rush uniforms are nothing but a money grab from the NFL and one which probably will work.
Now that we officially agree on that, let's get to the rankings.
The Worst Color Rush Unis
- Dolphins: There is nothing (literally nothing) good about bright orange. Not in any situation ever.
- 49'ers: A basic style tip, if your outfits going one way you don't accessorize with something completely different that looks out of place. The helmets don't match the rest of the uni.
- Cowboys: I'm just here to annoy Steve and point out the unis aren't all that different from previous ones worn by the Cowboys.
- Seahawks: Your TV might just start smoking and then explode from the amount of color coming off of the screen. Then again, maybe that's the point?
- Lions: The Lions don't do much right in football, but they nailed the look for this uni, sharp and good color tones.
- Steelers: The black and yellow is always a classic look -- and when its more black than yellow, it just looks menacing. I'm a fan.
- Panthers: The neon type of look works well in some shades -- particularly in Carolina Panther. The silver helmet really accents the whole look.
- Falcons: I like a red/black color scheme a lot, and the Falcons pulled it off quite well. The red jerseys with black numbers just works.
So what about you? What is your completely subjective take on which color rush uniforms are the best and which are the worst?

In case you hadn't heard, Cleveland has put Robert Griffin III on IR after he suffered a shoulder injury in the Browns week one game against the Eagles.
The Browns lost the game 29-10 -- and the long, sordid history of QB failures in Cleveland seems to be well on its way to continuing with RGIII's IR assignment.
Griffin does stand a chance to return mid-season -- but the earliest possible date he can return is November 10.
So where does this put you if you are a Madden gamer (and also a glutton for punishment) who uses the Browns extensively?
Well, hello there Josh McCown.
Compared to RGIII's 75 overall talent, McCown is a 71 overall -- so the drop off isn't that big. Especially considering RG III's speed and throw power are the two differentiatiors between him and McCown.
McCown actually has advantages in throwing accuracy in short (83 vs. 81), medium (78 vs. 77) and deep (78 vs. 75), so it could be a lot worse -- like being an actual Cleveland Browns quarterback.

Now this is a funny and completely fun video made by YouTube user YoBoy Pizza which features two completely polar opposite teams to see just how important speed is in the game.
On one sideline are the New York Giants -- a team full of guys rated 10 in speed, acceleration and release but 99 in every other attribute.
On the other sideline are the San Diego Chargers -- a team full of guys rated 99 in speed, acceleration, and release and 10 in every other attribute.
Seriously, this is a fun experiment. Check it out and let us know what you think!

EA released an update to Cloud CFM's in Madden NFL 17 with increased upgrade costs for physical ratings, and draft classes being better tuned to match base rosters in the game. The newly tweaked draft classes will take affect the season after your current season (or your next generated draft class).
The updates rolled out yesterday morning and should be in effect for all Cloud Based CFMs. If you are running a CFM offline, you will have to wait for the next patch for the changes to take place within your game.
How big of a difference are the changes making from what you are seeing? Let us know in the comments!

The Cover Four is a defense your opponent will typically dial up when they are expecting you to try to throw it deep and/or when you have a long way to go to get a first down.
This umbrella coverage, if called correctly by the defense, will typically keep an offense from converting on a 3rd and long scenario (as just one example).
The beautiful thing about football, and Madden, is that every coverage has something which can beat it. The cover four is no different.
You'll want to attack the Cover Four (and Cover Three for that matter) in situations where its appropriate for your opponent to call it. That's usually long yardage situations. Routes like slants and curls are good -- but anything which results in multiple players attacking the intermediate and short areas of the field will result in at least one player being open. Ideally that one player will be your best open field receiver who can run with the ball.
Throwing over the top against a cover four, especially this year, is going to be a bad idea almost always. To convert a long yardage situation against a cover four, you'll want to try to run concepts which results in the intermediate routes being open and having some running room. I've also had some success with screens in these situations.
It goes without saying, but your odds of converting first downs when you face long yardage are long to begin with -- but at least you have a fighting chance versus throwing deep into double coverage.

NCAA Football is always going to have a bit of speculation around when/if/maybe someday it will return.
In an interview with IGN, EA Chief Competition Officer Peter Moore added his voice to the chorus of speculation with a rather optimistic tone.
Check out the quotes from the interview compiled by Polygon's Owen Good:
|
|||||||||
|
Currently there's still no traction for a game to actually make a comeback since the lawsuit's settlement checks are still going out.
As we've reported in the past, NCAA Football will only make a comeback when the legal structures of the NCAA change to allow players to be paid. A game with generic rosters would still not be a legally viable option and most likely several schools would balk at such an effort anyways -- thus it's unlikely anything but a fully licensed game with real players on real teams will be shipped. EA will almost certainly not pursue a college game of any kind unless there is a zero percent chance of a lawsuit.
So while we appreciate Moore's optimism, it does look like we're still in a holding pattern waiting on the NCAA to do something right.
In other words, the world may look like this before a NCAA Football game ships again.

EA Sports has posted a new trailer and blog post detailing this year's Draft Champions mode in NHL 17.
|
|||||||||
|
You'll start your Draft Champions mode off this year with a team theme. Each theme will come with a base set of mid and lower tier players to build a team off of. The themes will update through the year and thus, there will be new ones to choose from as the season wears on.
You'll then draft from a pool of better players to add to your team. Each draft is designed to look different so you should have a different feeling team each time through the mode.
You can read more about Draft Champions in NHL 17 on EA Sports' Website.

Madden NFL 17 is sure to bring much debate about the direction of the series, but let there be no doubt the game has certainly planted itself as a serious contender for more casual football fans' hearts.
This year, Madden has added several new features that basically hold any newer user’s hand to virtual pay dirt. From the way the new auto-running moves function to the continued increase of on-screen feedback, Madden is working very hard to win over new fans' hearts while simultaneously deepening the love from existing fans with more and more simulation depth.
