Regular Season - Week 5

KC @ Raiders - Lose 34-28

While we played a decent game, there were several keys to our ultimate defeat. First, the Raiders have an excellent young QB Duncan. He has great ability short, medium and long and simply can get the ball to his receivers. And second, the Raiders scored two 4th quarter field goals of 48 and 53 yards that were the difference.
  • QB Cassel 23-33 326 yds (1 td & 1 int)
  • LOLB Darby 2 sacks and LE T.Jackson 1 sack
  • HB C.Johnson 17-38 and 3 tds
  • WR S.Johnson caught 1 td pass
  • WR Mack caught 5-94 yds

Another key factor in this game was giving up a kick-off return for a touchdown. WR S.Smith returned one on us and yet still we were in this game until late in the 4th quarter.

Our record is now 1-3-1 on the year.
We sit last in the AFC West Division.
We sit 27th overall in the NFL.

And while we have the trade deadline upon us now, we have absolutely no cap room to do anything and would only add to our penalty situation for the coming year if we made any significant moves with veteran players. Not to mention, obviously we would have to look at lower-priced players in return so that we don't put ourselves into a deeper cap hole at year end. So we will be very quiet this season at the deadline!

We need to win games! Period!

Once again, and calmly and rationally I might add, Coach Harbaugh and I sat down for a frank and realistic discussion about our quarterback situation again. Here are the facts:
  1. Matt is 3rd in NFL passing yards
  2. Matt is 4th in completion percentage
  3. Matt is 5th in TD passes thrown
  4. Matt is tied for 6th with the longest pass yardage
  5. Matt is way down the sacks given up list (a credit to our O-Line of course)
  6. Matt is also tied for 2nd in INT's, having tossed 7

We simply have a great quarterback on our team and I refuse to pull the trigger on anything that would appear to be a short-term solution to a problem that might only get worse if I make the wrong move.

There is a young QB on the trading block now that has excellent potential (maybe even slightly better ratings in areas when compared to our backup QB Willis Jackson). But he's up for a contract renewal and we would then be forced to make a very difficult decision in the off-season. I simply feel we have to gut this out and see if we can turn things around. "On paper" we should be preforming much better than we are.

Oh, and while the interception number concern me, I should point out that Matt is tied with Drew Brees at second, behind both Aaron Rodgers and Peyton Manning, who have each tossed 8 interceptions so far!

Again, we simply have to win!

And once again the NFL scheduling team have not done us any favours. We have another rivalry in Week 6...a return engagement with the defending Super Bowl Champion Denver Broncos.

The AFC West may be completely decided by the sixth week of the season. And, dare I say, may have already been decided for us?!

Regular Season - Week 4

KC @ Broncos - Lose 31-20

As I mentioned, facing rivals is always a great indication of where you stand with respect to your immediate competition. Now we know. We have met and tied the Raiders, lost to the Chargers and now the defending Super Bowl Champions in week 4.

We have work to do.
  • WR Mack, HB C.Johnson each with 1 td reception
  • MLB D.Johnson and SS Frazier had very good games
  • QB Cassel 19-34 196 yds with 2 td but 4 ints

On our very first play from scrimmage we tossed an interception! That, and the three more this game, concerns me.

Matt has had some interception problems creep in from time to time over the years and they always seem to right themselves, or at the very least seem to subside. But now that we are trying to take things to another level, I feel it only prudent to keep an eye on this situation to make sure that it doesn't get out of hand and we make corrections as needed to keep The Chiefs on track.

I had a brief meeting with coach Harbaugh after the game. Coaches coach, of course, and GM's manage the team operation, but I did ask that he keep me apprised of anything that might cause us concern at the QB position. Matt is into the second last year of his contract and we do have Willis Jackson in the backup role. He has shown some spark in pre-season games when he gets significant time.

I'm not saying we should look at giving him a regular season start, that's the coaches decision, but I would like to know if we need to be scouting some additional depth at QB for the draft next year?

Another quirk of the schedule allows us to revisit the Raiders sooner, rather than later, next week. We'll see what transpires and adjust accordingly.

Regular Season - Week 3

Chargers @ KC - Lose 28-17

This looks even closer than it really was. This was certainly a good indication of where we are and where we need to be this season. Both this week and last, as a matter of fact, because we now sit at 1-1-1 on the year and occupy third place in the AFC West. I was not counting on that as week wrap up week 3.
  • HB C.Johnson 13-45 yds and 1 td
  • WR McAlister 1st career TD!
  • TE Leoni 7-81 yds
  • ROLB Merriman led the defense with 5-4 tkls
  • CB Flowers 1 int
  • QB Cassel 21-33 276 yds (100.0 rtg) and 1 td

The keys to me were:
Being outplayed on 3rd down situations. San Diego was 66% on 3rd downs.
And also being outplayed in red zone situations.

We simply have to stay focused and not let this distract us. We'll regroup for week 4 coming up...

Regular Season - Week 2

Raiders @ KC - Tie 27-27

A rivalry renewed and, as you can see, undecided this week at least! We played a heck of a game. The Raiders have a very hot kid at QB now and the past couple of seasons QB Duncan has given us all we can handle. He was the difference between our winning and just settling for the tie after time ran out.
  • FS Dyles and CB Flowers both with ints
  • SS Frazier 6-2 tkls
  • CB Flowers, MLB D.Johnson, DT O.Williams each with 5 tkls
  • K Succop 2-4 FGA (longest 50yds)
  • WR Mack 7-91 yds and 1 td
  • QB Cassel 19-26 259 yds and 1 td (117.1 rtg)
  • HB C.Johnson 27-54, HB Charles and FB Mughelli each with 1 td

While a tie always feel like a game left unfinished, we'll take the crucial point, especially with the Raiders.

We have another rival coming to town next week too. Another quirk of the schedule maker has us starting at home three weeks in a row, next week being the Chargers! We'll be ready.

Regular Season - Week 1

Redskins @ KC - WIN 34-14

I feel very good!
It's one thing to believe that you have made positive changes in the off-season. It's quite another to watch those changes solidify in training camp, through the pre-season schedule and then materialize in week 1.
  • QB Cassel 17-27 301 yds (3 tds/2 ints) and (107.1 rtg)
  • LE T.Jackson 2 sacks
  • CB Cason 2 ints
  • K Succop 2-2 FGA (longest 48 yds)
  • HB C.Johnson 21-128 yds and 1 td rushing, plus 5-94 yds and 2 tds through the air
  • TE Leoni 58 yd catch for 1 td

Nice way to open the season. We played a very strong game on both sides of the ball and I was especially impressed with HB Chris Johnson. I now more than understand why coach Harbaugh simply had to have him signed as a free agent just prior to the draft. I am now safely expecting big things from him and the rest of the team.

By the way HB Chris Johnson - Offensive Player of the Week AFC!

Pre-Season Games

We feel good about all the moves we've made. We feel like we have strengthened where we needed too, certainly feel good about Coach Harbaugh and our chances of going a long way this year. I just hope we can set the bar high early and, unlike last year, keep aspiring for more!

Pre Week #1:
Cardinals @ KC - WIN 12-0
  • QB Cassel 95.1 rtg
  • HB Johnson & Charles 104 yds combined
  • Defense recorded 5 sacks

Pre Week #2:
KC @ NY Jets - Lose 14-13
  • WR Mack with 1 td
  • QB Cassel 90.2 rtg
  • QB W.Jackson 80.7 rtg

Pre Week #3:
KC @ NY Giants - WIN 20-14
  • LE T.Jackson with 2 sacks
  • HB Charles 1 td
  • QB Cassel 120.8 rtg

Pre Week #4:
Raiders @ KC - WIN 24-12
  • QB W.Jackson 136.3 rtg
  • QB Cassel 110.3 rtg
  • DT Evans with 2 sacks
  • MLB D.Johnson with 1 int
  • WR Mack, WR Black and HB C.Johnson each with 1 td

I really liked the way new head coach Harbaugh utilized virtually the entire team to help him get a great overview of what he has to work with this season in game situations.

HB C.Johnson looked very good, but it will take some time to settle into a rhythm. In the meantime, I think we have an awesome tandem at HB.

Trade:
We would like to announce one additional trade made in the pre-season. The Chiefs, being quite deep now at our HB position with four coming through camp, have sent HB D.Williams to the Texans in exchange for RG A.Page.

Page adds depth to our offensive line and will be a player to watch in future years.

The Draft:

* Please note that our 1st Round Draft Pick was traded to The Raiders last season, as part of the deal that brought us WR Mack.

Round 2 (Pick 55) - LG Z.Archibald
Round 3 (Pick 70) - RT Waters
Round 4 (Pick 102) - MLB Walker
Round 4 (Pick 110) - OLB Umana
Round 5 (Pick 141) - DT Walker
Round 5 (Pick 148) - FS Scott
Round 5 (Pick 151) - LG Heningberg
Round 6 (Pick 183) - CB Bailey
Round 6 (Pick 191) - WR McAlister

Our Draft Grade this year was a "C". Best choice was deemed RT Waters, our 3rd Round Pick.
Chargers, Texans, Panthers all rated "A+"!
* Note the Chargers are our division rivals of course

Rookie Signings:

* NOTE: This year (and going forward), I will abide by the current CBA outline (as I previously mentioned in this dynasty blog) of:
  • First half of first round - at most 6 years
  • Second half of first round - at most 5 years
  • After round one - no more than 4 years
  • Rookie contracts not to be renegotiated in first two years
* I think this will challenge me a lot more after the first contract expires, to really make tough choices in order to respect the cap.

LG Z.Archibald - 4-years/1.64-million
RT Waters - 4-years/2-million
MLB Walker - 4-years/1.65-million
OLB Umana - 4-years/1.55-million
DT Walker - 3-years/930-thousand
FS Scott - 3-years/930-thousand
LG Heningberg - 4-years/1.24-million
CB Bailey - 2-years/620-thousand
WR McAlister - 4-years/1.24-million

NOTE: After training camp, LG Archibald was released outright.

ALSO NOTE: My previous CAP reference was actually AFTER completing the above signings, the returning veteran and any free agent signings.

So, once again, we sit at $650k and $10.83-million penalties.

Re-Signings:

RG Albert
After his Pro-Bowl appearance, we had some work to do to re-sign him this off-season, but I am happy to say that we have agreed to a 5-year/43-million contract to solidify our offensive line.

P Colquitt
We liked what we saw the past couple of seasons and have decided to renew him to a 2-year/2-million contract!

WR Mack
After making a significant trade for him last season, we're thrilled to announce that he is now a Chief for 5-years/33.5-million.

FB Mughelli
Has re-signed for 2-years/6.95-million.

SS Frazier
We were very impressed with him this past season and have re-signed him to 4-years/24.25-million.

Extensions:

We're also very happy to report that we have extended the following, as they were going into their final contract years:

MLB D.Johnson
He had an outstanding year and we want more of the same over the next few. We've just signed a new 3-year/14.5-million contract to keep him in KC.

CB Keys
We feel it's very important to keep our outstanding secondary in place. To that end, we have agreed to a 5-year/55-million contract extension!

Other moves:

HB J.Williams
WR L.Long
RG I.Ndukwe
DT J.Belcher

* Will not be offered new contracts with the team

DT Duncan
QB Normil

* Have been released

Off-Season Trades:

I would also like to announce the following trades.

We have traded FS Page and RT McLaurin, plus a 5th Round draft pick to the Chicago Bears for HB D.Profit.

And we have traded FS Hixon, plus 2nd and 3rd Round draft picks
to the Detroit Lions for their 3rd and 4th draft picks.

Final Moves before Draft:

Coach Harbaugh also had some last minute and key moves to suggest.
* in reality, I forgot to reset the CPU settings to USER after hiring the new head coach and Coach Harbaugh did indeed make a few "moves" himself...

The Chiefs are proud to announce that they have signed Free Agent - HB Chris Johnson to a 6-year/48.84-million contract for the coming year. And also Free Agent - TE Aaron Danton to a [b]1-year/310-thousand/B] contract.

As a result, we also announce that both TE Cottam and LG Alleman have been released (with 2 years each left on their contracts).

Cap:
* We sit with $650k cap space and penalties of $10.83-million.

Front Office:
Head Coach - John Harbaugh
* Coach Harbaugh also provides a +5 AWR bonus to all players
Scouting Agency - Franchise Scouts (18 reports)

Stadium Upgrades:
Digital Audio - Heated Grass - Super Suites

Sponsorship:
We have also signed a new one-year agreement with Vandelay World Bank worth potentially 25-million dollars should we make a Super Bowl appearance.

Retirements:
None!

The Return of The Chiefs
Franchise Year 5 - 2013

2012 was a year of great promise. We felt we had an extremely solid line-up heading into the pre-season and made some moves just prior to the regular season and at the trade deadline that we felt made us even better!

Unfortunately we seemed to struggle down the stretch and, in face, did not score a single point in the last two games we played, which frankly was unacceptable.

We will address any and all needs in the off-season and be completely prepared for the new season.

From the Office of The General Manager
Kansas City Chiefs:

As we begin the off-season, I would like to announce the hiring of a brand new Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs!

I would like to introduce
John Harbaugh as our brand new coach.

Over the past several years Coach Harbaugh has amassed a record of 59-21 and a .738 winning percentage. He's been instrumental in guiding the Baltimore Ravens to the post-season regularly. We sincerely believe that under his guidance, The Chiefs will better that record by taking it all the way.

Coach Harbaugh has been signed to a 3-year deal that is worth $3.99-million.

Obviously The Chiefs have decided not to renew the contract of Todd Haley. After a promising year three of his contract, in which he took the team to the conference championship, last year started equally promising, but trailed off considerably, essentially forcing us to make a very hard decision.

The rest of the coaching staff remains in place for 2013.

Super Bowl

Denver Broncos 63 - Chicago Bears 32

Congratulations, on behalf of The Kansas City Chiefs, to the Denver Broncos as NFL SUPER BOWLS Champions for 2012!

It's truly hard to believe that after dropping a 6-0 game in the Wild Card, they simply steamrolled the Bears 63-32. Once again we seemed to have been "that close", but oh, so far away from the date with destiny.

We will make only appropriate changes, as needed, in the off-season!

And we will be back, stronger than ever!

*(fyi: All games after the WC Playoff were simply simmed)

Stand By for the "off-season" moves and my rationale to take the Chiefs to the next level in 2013.

Thank You very much for following
