Regular Season:
Week 6 - KC @ Broncos - WIN 27-10
* After the flurry of activity surrounding trades and the trade deadline, it was back to football. And it was back at it against rival Denver.
  • Cassel has a good game (102.5 rtg) and threw for 3 tds.
  • Black, Charles and Leoni all had great receiving games.
  • Darby and Johnson were big on the defensive side of things.
  • As well Flowers picked two!
This game put at at the top of the AFC West with a 4-1 record.

Week 7 - Packers @ KC - WIN 24-17
* The 3-2 Pack was a good test to see if we were real. I consider this a very big win, taking us to 5-1. The team is truly starting to believe that the past is now firmly in the past and we can have a new, winning attitude. It's simply more confidence and actually seeing and feeling the team gel. Defeating Grean Bay took us to 5-1 on the year!
  • Cassel again played well (98.2 rtg)
  • Charles had 2 tds
  • Leoni has really blossomed and caught 100 yards
  • Succops hit a 52 yard FG!
Scouting Update:
We went back for a conference with the scouts to update what they were seeing. Because of some technical difficulties (I forgot to scout beginning week one...) we had to go the extra week before they were able to turn in their full scouting reports on the first 18 players.
Because of the depth, or sometimes lack thereof at some positions, we also decided to focus on more positions near the top of the potential draftees - LB, QB and C (to go with the previous G positions).

More to come...

Regular Season:
Week 1 - KC @ NY Jets - WIN 17-14
* Building on the pre-season, we had a great opener in the east. ROLB Hali was Player of the Game and our second round draft pick WR S.Johnson had a kick-off return for a touchdown! Everybody looked good, on and off the field. Homecoming should be fun!

Week 2 - Chargers @ KC - WIN 24-17
* The first home game of 2011 was against arch-rivals the Chargers and the team responded. HB Charles was Player of the Game in this one with over 120 yards on the ground. A 2-0 start has everyone feeling very positive. The players are thrilled to finally see some hard work pay off and the fans and media have quite possibly turned the corner on our vision for the future.

Week 3 - Bye Week

"The Trade":
With the bye week came some time to look at where we are (which is in good shape) and where we really want to be, but most importantly missing pieces we could add to take us to another level quickly.

The answer came by scanning our depth chart and poking and prodding at any visible holes. What stood out were a couple of things.

We were carrying six DT's, one of which was actually a SS, but listed as a DT at the moment, along with a couple of extra CB's in what was a very deep CB core with Flowers, Cason, Dyles R and Keys R, all A potential players.

And because I actually had a CB Carr playing FS at the moment, simply because his stats were better suited than FS Page, the only sub 80 overall score on the defense was at ROLB. Even though we had just re-signed ROLB Hali to a new deal, I sniffed around to see what was out there, made a few calls and proposed a couple of different ideas so that we might look to improve, given our great start, and advance the plan a bit.

After evaluating the top players at the ROLB position, one name seemed a little more within possibility than others. So, offering our 1st Round Pick, CB Washington and DT Herron, I was able to secure ROLB Merriman and 3rd Round Pick from the Chargers. Even though it was trading within our division for a top pick in the next draft, I consider this a huge move for the team. We traded depth and a 1st round pick that likely would have maxxed my cap (after picking three in the last two years) for a proven performer that would contribute as soon as he put on the uniform!

Also moved, ROLB White and 6th Round Pick to the Giants for backup C Anthony.

Week 4 - Broncos @ KC - WIN 31-14
* Two victories over rivals in a row. The Chiefs start 3-0 and already show their dominance, we hope, within the AFC West. Things are all good! CB Flowers is the AFC Player of the Week, QB Cassel had a rating of 106.8 in the game and once again HB Charles was great on the ground with 142 yards. I credit not only his running, but the upgrades we've made on the right side of the O-Line and the play of C Harris with a lot of our early success on the ground. These guys worked hard in training camp.
By the way, new addition ROLB Merriman had most tackles in the game, making more than an immediate impact with The Chiefs!

Week 5 - KC @ Chargers - Lose 14-9
* The first chance for the roster players from both teams involved in our recent trade to get together didn't quite pan out as I had hoped. A game featuring nothing but FG's and a Safety is no where close to what I thought was in story as the rivalry continued. We simply couldn't get on track. And, by the way, CB Washington, who was sixth deep at CB for us, played probably his best game ever today! Typical.

Trade Deadline:
Extended contracts of LG Waters and also WR Wade, for a second time, two years in each case.

We moved RE Magee, in his last year of contract, to the Rams for 4th Round Pick and LE McGee, who will be stricly backup on the defensive depth chart.

Almost caught up to where I actually am in the Chiefs 2011 season. More to come...
Enjoy!

Last Year: We feel over the past two years of re-evaluating the team, making what we feel are needed moves and be strategically drafting where needed, we have improved. We just need the front office moves to transfer to the field. On to 2011 (Franchise Year 3)!

Pre-Season (All four simmed each week):
KC @ Rams - WIN 42-19
NY Giants @ KC - Lose 17-12
Broncos @ KC - WIN 20-14
KC @ Seahawks - WIN 28-26

The same record as last pre-season. Last year we were extremely hopeful after this opening, as we are this year, but there's also just a hint of "look what happened in the regular season" too! We'll fight that feeling.

This season Franchise Scouts have been told to look at both the defensive and offensive lines again. Look for anything and everything to bring in some backup talent and, especially on defense, anticipate the future with some rookies having time to develop before needed. Because FB Mughelli is now 31, I also instructed them to keep an eye out for any high potential FB. You can never have enough talent from which to craft a team, especially one that we hope will vastly improve each year.

The regular season is coming...

After falling to 5-11 last year, in what was supposed to be full of promise, that just made the work we had ahead of us in the off-season that much more important.

Re-Signings (right at seasons end):
HB Charles - He is the future of our backfield, so we extend him 5years/35million!
ROLB Hali - Had a great year, so 3years/25million for some more
TE Cottam - We re-sign as insurance behind the rookie
DT Herron
DT Morgan
DT Edwards
C Harris - Whom we felt simply won the position over the year
LG Alleman
* Were all the moves prior to taking a vacation at seasons end

Release (right at seasons end):
C Morris
CB Patterson
QB Hanie
* We have a lot of draft picks and I wanted to make sure we had the room. Aside from Hanie, who would have signed for a mimimal deal, the rest simply wanted to much and would not have been re-signed when the time came.

Front Office:
Coaching Staff
OC Pete Carmichael - QB +5 AWR
DC Mel Tucker - CB, FS, SS +3 PRC
ST Joe Marciano - K Power and K/P Accuracy +3

Training Staff
Hold on Tight Training - HB Carry +5 (hoping to cut down on fumbles)

Stadium Upgrades - Mini-Mall, Kiosks and Solar Panels
* Again, hoping this will impress the assembled masses each week on Game Day!
Sponsorship: Into second deal of 3-year agreement with Scarn for 3-million dollars. Again the expectation is either 10 wins or a playoff berth.

Off Season:

Retirements: None!

Re-Signings:
Again, not sure whether the players (I know, it's AI) "appreciate" you extending them, but...
WR Bowe given a 5year deal
CB Flowers rewarded for a great year with 6years/73million!
CB Cason the other key piece in the secondary with 6years/67million!
MLB Johnson showed me he wanted to play, so 3 more years

Free Agents:
Once again we felt it important to build with the draft for the future. I couldn't help but peak at the wire, but nothing stood out as being worth dropping a ton of cash, especially since I had pretty much just done that with my current roster.

Draft:
Round 1 - Pick #4 - DT M.Evans
Round 2 - WR S.Johnson
Round 3 - CB D.Dyles
Round 4 - DT O.Williams
Round 4 - WR L.Black
Round 5 - CB D.Keys
Round 5 - LOLB A.Darby
Round 5 - QB M.Normil
Round 6 - K A.Fitte
Round 6 - HB D.Williams

While we set out to bolster some defensive position this year, as you can see, there were a few other positions that interested me with later round picks. I felt quite good about my choice for WR and with two each DT and CB, plus another WR, I think we covered the positions and camp will be ultra-compettive this fall.

Rookie Signings:
Evans - 6years/47million (Again a steep price for the first round)
Johnson - 4years/7.5million
Dyles - 5years/10million
O.Williams - 4years/5.35million
Black - 4years/3.10million
Keys - 3years/930k
Darby - 5years/1.15million
Normil - 4years/1.24million
Fitte - 7years/2.15million
D.Williams - 4years/1.24million
* As always, I first try to do the math with minimal bonuses. The bottom half or so are signed without bonuses, making them easy to cut should they not pan out. The top...not so much! Agents...

This year our Draft Grade was F, worst of 32 teams! I assume that's the price you pay for targeting some positions and not simply picking best player (assuming the draft order produces best players top through bottom in order) at the time. Best value was deemed DT Orien Williams, but I felt good about all my picks and also felt like we have added talent and depth in the places most needed by The Chiefs! We'll see if the F comes back to haunt me.
By the way, best grades (B+) went to Packes, Bengals, Broncos, Raiders and Chargers. Yes, I noticed too that the last three are all our division rivals!

Salary Cap was really utilized this season. I sucked it down to only about 16-million after extending contracts and signing picks. Plus we still have a penalty going forward of 1-million next year.
Once again we did what we intended to hopefully assemble a winner for Kansas City, but clearly we'll have to operate different as we go now with a much more restrictive cap.

Very excited about 2011 - Franchise Year #3...

Regular Season (Weeks 7-17):
KC @ Jaguars - Lose 18-13
* A game played in the pouring rain, which was actually our first experience in the past two years of bad weather. Not to blame the weather, but the team simply could not find the second gear this game and, as a result, we're plodding along at 1-5. One still has to believe, but the outcry is beginning to hit a fever pitch.

KC @ Titans - WIN 28-24
* Boy, did we need a victory and it came in a very close contest with the Titans. Let's hope this helps us turn the corner on our season.

Texans @ KC - WIN 34-31
* Thanks to an awesome performance by HB Charles, who by the way was named Player of the Week in both AFC/NFL for this week, we have added another in the "W" colum and sit 3-5 on the year. Two-in-a-row, the second of which comes at home, makes for a nice gift from the team.

Bengals @ KC - Lose 24-10
* A couple at home would have gone far, but...3-6.

KC @ Dolphins - Lose 35-20
* The road didn't help us refocus. I fear we may be sliding a little bit and returning to the funky feel of two years ago when things clearly were not on track. Maybe a dinner with the coach in Miami before hoping on the plane back might reaffirm the confidence that I have in both him, and myself, that we are moving the right way "big picture".

KC @ Raiders - Lose 25-10
* If there's one I would like to have back, it's this one. Division...a team we simply have to outpace this, and every, year...but, their turn this time. Dinner apparently didn't help.

Colts @ KC - Lose 21-18
* When you're on a three-game losing streak, the last thing you want to stare down is QB P. Manning, and on a frozen field. He did not disappoint. While the team played hard and kept thing close, we were the victim of 4 interceptions. The errant passes seem to be a problem this year, but my hope is that the virtually brand new right-hand side of the O-Line will gain valuable experience each and every game and be better for it long term.

Trade Block:
After the Colts loss, and feeling the wrath of the fans, I did make a few phone calls and put TE Pope on the trading block seeking some picks. We really feel rookie TE Leoni is a real keeper and that makes us deep at the position. The Bears responded with 4th Round, 5th Round and 6th Round Picks. Too good to pass up and, if nothing else, will give us either depth or a lot of competition at positions for next season.

I also decided to waive WR Copper as well. My intention was to protect our O-Line with some backup and that came in the form of C Morris from the Jets. They also agreed to a 5th Round Pick as part of the deal.

We also released FS Bland, chosen last year in the 4th round, outright. He was just not up to the task of pushing out any of our roster players.

KC @ Broncos - WIN 27-21
* This was a much needed win within our division on yet another chilly day of only 33 degrees in Denver. The mile-high chill cuts the lungs (and I'm watching from a box, not playing the actual game)! Great victory to take us to 4-9 on the year. If we can stay hot, we can better our last season record.

Raiders @ KC - WIN 24-21
* Huge victory! That's all that needs to be said.

KC @ Seahawks - Lose 23-3
* Not to make excuses, especially using weather, but this was another rainy game on the west coast and the team simply did not respond. Putting up a field goal rarely will generate a victory. We slide to 5-10 and are in danger of not even equalling last year.

Rans @ KC - Lose 22-17
* Once again we simply had too many fumbles and too many INT's. This was an extremely frustrating way to close out the regular season at home. Even equalling a less than satisfactory losing record of last season would have been tough to take, but I'm sure the roar will be loud and continuous through the rest of the winter, spring and summer! Still, and I really feel in the minority outside our organization, I believe we have the beginnings of something good. If we can add some pieces over the off-season, I think we can turn the corner!

The Chiefs end the 2010 season with a record of 5-11. Truly disappointing, given the moves we made prior to the season to raise the expectations of both our fans and, frankly, ourselves.

Pro-Bowlers 2009:
* Not this year I'm afraid

SUPER BOWL 2010 - New England Patriots 31 - Dallas Cowboys 9
Category: Madden 10 Chiefs
Posted on June 13, 2010 at 06:03 PM.
Regular Season (Weeks 1-5):
KC @ Chargers - Lose 30-7
* The excitement of the 3-1 pre-season was quickly tempered with an opening loss in San Diego to the division rivals. We will meet again.

KC @ Cardinals - Lose 38-28
* The process of The Chiefs coming together as a team and learning to win was again derailed by a high-powered Cardinal squad. 0-2 hurts to open on the road and will not help the home opener attendance.

Week #3 - Bye Week

Broncos @ KC - Lose 27-24 (ot)
* We really wanted this one. Division rivals...home opener...a chance to impress the crowd with the new look for 2010. Still work to do apparently, but if you don't actually win, a well-fought overtime loss is the next best thing? Not really. Still smarts.

Chargers @ KC - Lose 34-31
* Well the change for redemption came early. But it would appear the Chargers are going one way and The Chiefs are still in re-tolling mode. Chargers 4-0, Chiefs 0-4 and starting to take it on the chin in the media!

Trade Deadline:
The toughest moves you make are sometimes resisting the urge to make a ton of moves, even in the face of 0-4!
* (A little confession, for the record this is actually the third franchise that I have attempted, the first two ending in the third and forth years as I was stumbling through the game. At the risk of repeating, Madden 10 is my first ever Madden game...late bloomer...and because the "manual" really only deals with which buttons to push and not really "how" the game truly functions, I was thrilled, but totally at a loss! But, because the chance to manage a sports franchise is such a cool idea, I am trying to be a quick study. And truly, the salary cap, trading - or not trading - and impatience are hurdles for a less than casual follower of the NFL...until now.)
No deals! We made a lot of moves last year, drafted well and just have to have faith in the process. Stick to the gameplan so to speak!

Regular Season (Week 6):
49s @ KC - WIN 28-19
* Maybe it was the relief of the quiet trading deadline or maybe it was the confidence the GM has shown in the squad since the start of the season, in spite of everything, but win number one came in week six. The Chiefs are 1-4. Last year we sat at 2-4 after the sixth week of the season and don't think I haven't heard about it loudly and often.Once again it's time to turn to the scouts, the new scouting team this season and review where we are in the process of adding more pieces to the puzzle for next season. The report shows that we seem to have a decent crop of HB's, although HB Charles seems to be rounding into form nicely, despite our record, so hopefully we'll just add depth at that position. It's a little light in this year's WR department apparently, but the preliminary reports also suggest some CB's may be worthy of a look.

More to come...

Last Year: We saw some improvement over the 2 wins of the previous year and ended with a record of 6-10. We were also able to fully evaluate the roster and make some moves that we feel will set us up for the future. The future may not be now, but it's out there! We're excited about 2010!

Pre-Season (First two in Spectate mode, second two simmed):
KC @ Jaguars - WIN 20-10
Bears @ KC - Lose 37-13
Falcons @ KC - WIN 27-20
KC @ Lions - WIN 27-12

A far better pre-season. The team feels very upbeat and truly hopes this is a good omen for 2010. 3-1. And because of that, as GM, I do note feel we need to tinker at all with the roster prior to opening day of the season. But, of course, we'll stay on top of that and make any moves needed to improve the team. We owe it to the fans!

This season I believe we will look to the offense with our scouting. I've instructed the Franchise Scouts team to look at wide receivers and half backs, but also keep an eye out should any CB's and DT's look particularly impressive.

The season is ahead...

* (If you're wondering why these reports are coming fast and furious, I'm actually into the third year of my franchise now, but as a new convert to Madden, I just recently registered as a member of the Operation Sports site and forums...so I thought I would log some of this stuff, regardless of how successful or not I guide The Chiefs in the coming "years". Why that team...? Why not...? I can always do another one some other time...and I will, either M10 or when M11 arrives). Thanks if you're following along...hope you're enjoying the dynasty! And I truly hope this is for what it was intended as an offline franchise player?

After going 6-10 in the recently completed 2009 season, The Chiefs have some work to do in the off-season to maintain their momentum. Here's how it went...

Re-Signings (right at seasons end):
QB Croyle - Backup QB extended with a 4 year contract
TE Pope - Rewarded for his Pro Bowl selection with a new 2 year deal
WR Long
WR Lawrence
* Were the notables
I must admit, I haven't quite grasped the nuances of "re-signing" players before the end of their agreements (be it in the last year just prior to actually hitting the off-season "re-signings" button, hoping that they might feel rewarded and look for less if you do it prior to the actual re-signing period when it's fish or cut bait time, or during the last year, or more, of their current agreement to extended their deal). I'll evaluate how to best extend players as I learn more about Madden Franchise mode.

Movement prior to Draft:
RT O'Callaghan, TE Ryan and 7th Round Pick to Bears for 3rd Round Pick, DT Gilbert and QB Hanie (the last two just to fill backup roles). The key to this trade, for me, was to release some players not in the long-term plans and trade up draft picks.

ROLB Studebaker, C Norman to Eagles for 5th Round Pick, ROLB White and CB Patterson. Basically same goal with this move, move players not part of the plan and pick-up a draft pick and some role players.

SS Brown and 2nd Round Pick to Chargers for CB Cason and a 4th Round Pick. This was a key trade for The Chiefs. We really felt that we had to bolster the secondary and team someone with CB Flowers to provide more of a pass shutdown. Cason was the man (78ovr and A potential as it turned out once we had him on the roster...nice). And because we were scouting at the FS position, we felt SS Brown was worth cinching the deal with the trade down of draft picks included.

2nd Round, 3rd Round and 4th Round Picks to Browns for their 1st Round and 4th Round Picks. We project the Browns to possibly have the first overll and would love to draft a solid piece we think we have identified for O-Line before anyone else has a chance. Combined with our own 1st Round Pick, we intend to spend some cap room!

Front Office:
Hired Scouting team - Franchise Scouts (18 players)
Stadium Upgrades - Medical Facility and Super Screen
* Note exactly sure what the stadium upgrades do for you, aside from your spending income and incurring an annual upkeep expense? I like to think that the upgrades will impress the fans that join us at the stadium each week and make the game even more of an experience, keeping them returning week after week (along with more in the "W" column of course).
Sponsorship: Also signed a 3-year agreement with Scarn for 3-million dollars. Their expectation is either 10 wins or a playoff berth. I agree that would be a plan.

Off Season:

Retirements: None! We're on a bit of a "youth movement" at the moment, so any would have suprised me.

Re-Signings:
Again, not sure whether the players (I know, it's AI) "appreciate" you extending them ahead of time and/or if you pay anything more by taking them to this stage in their agreements without a contract, but will watch this every year and see.
FS Page to new 4year/14million deal
ROLD White
MLB Herron
CB Patterson all to 1year agreements as I recall.

Free Agents:
Truly there were none that really fit the plan, so bypassed the 30-day window entirely. We'll look at Free Agents if they fit the on-going goals and can be reasonably signed instead of a trade or drafting. But not this year.

Draft:
Round 1 - 1st Pick Overall - LT Zach Barnett (the Browns trade)
Round 1 - #12 - RG Austin Burden
Round 3 - FS Raysean Hixon
Round 4 - SS Casey Williams
Round 4 - FS Rob Bland
Round 5 - TE Kevin Leoni
Round 5 - SS Malik Frazier
Round 6 - C Zack McLaurin
Round 6 - LT Gussie Brown

Rookie Signings:
Barnett - 7years/54.75million (A lot, but we see the future)
Burden - 7years/40million (See above, this is the core of our O-Line)
Hixon - 4years/1.75million
Williams - 5years/3million
Bland - 2years/720k
Leoni - 7years/2.17million (max years/min price, hope it's a deal)
Frazier - 3years/930k
McLaurin - 7years/2.17million
Brown - 7years/2.17million
* The bottom half or so are signed without bonuses, making them easy to cut should they not pan out.

Turns out we were given a Draft Grade of B for our work in the entry draft. Barnett was deemed best value (if you can call a huge pay day for him a "best value" for us). We see both he and Burden as the future of a very strong front line for The Chiefs!

Salary Cap prior to start of season - 49.51-million with a penalty, because of the trading, of 1.49-million next year. We have indeed set out to do what we intended, spend some cap to work on the future. I see the rest being used to maintain a solid veteran core to help our rookies along.

On to 2010 - Franchise Year #2///

If you're wondering about the flurry of initial dynasty updates and were concerned that I have simply locked myself in the basement to play Madden 10 and guide the Chiefs to the Superbowl in one sitting. Not even close!
It's going to take two or three days of being locked in the basement!

Regular Season (Weeks 6-17):
Chargers @ KC - Lose 30-23
* A division rivalry. That's gotta hurt! That's puts us at 2-5 for the season.

Week #8 - Bye Week

KC @ Jags - Lose 9-6
* I may mention this a few more times, but I find one of the toughest things to do as a GM is to confidently make decisions and moves and then have the patience and confidence to believe they were the right way to go and wait for them to pan out. Still waiting... Now 2-6.

KC @ Raiders - WIN 27-3-21
* Another crucial divison rivalry. Not only do we have to focus on beating those above us, but maintaining the separation with those below us. Chiefs take the Raiders for the second time this season.

Steelers @ KC - Lose 23-20 (ot)
* A tough contest against a very good team. Nice to push it to OT, but disappointing not to come away with the victory. The 3-7 record is starting to sting.

KC @ Chargers - Lose 34-10
* Losing again to division rival Chargers hurts. Clearly we were both outgunned and still focusing on the tough Steeler loss the week before. That produced another number for the "L" column.

Broncos @ KC - Lose 27-20
* Close, but... Based on the season, I am confident we are no better than third in the AFC West. Now 3-9 and in jeoprady of repeating last years performance when the expectations were so much more.

Bills @ KC - WIN 17-6
* At this point in the season, to Lose 2-in-a-row at home would have been deadly, almost assuring a pretty sparse crowd for the final home game and plenty of grumbling in the off-season. But, the boys came through against the Bills!

Browns @ KC - WIN 14-3
* As Collingsworth would say, "The Chiefs are on a bit of a roll now..."! Back to back wins to close out the home schedule is fantastic. That puts us at 5-9 for the season and graphically shows the rebuilding process in progress.

KC @ Bengals - WIN 27-19
* WOW! I think I mentioned earlier that it's both a blessing and curse to get on a roll. Three wins in a row suggest we may be on the right track with the re-building process, but it's never a good time to get too over confident.

KC @ Broncos - Lose 24-17
* I guess it was too much to ask to go 4-0 in the last four games of the year. We closed out with a loss to our division rivals.

The Chiefs end the 2009 season with a record of 6-10. Based on both the record of last year (2-14) and with the boost of winning the last three of four games, including a couple of home victories, the season ended on a hopeful note.

Pro-Bowlers 2009:
TE Pope
WR Bowe
DT Edwards - All will go to the Pro-Bowl this year. Another sign that The Chiefs have turned the corner and should be in great shape for the coming season.

SUPER BOWL 2009 - New York Giants 24 - Baltimore Ravens 23

Off-Season preparations for 2010 (Franchise year 2) next update...

After a rough pre-season, the team is being worked hard, both in terms of their shape and their character. It will take a lot to turn both corners and develop a whole new winning attitude.

This first year in Coach Haley's reign will be one of assessing and making moves, therefore I'll concentrate more on the front office moves than the actual games until we have something to work with that will be worth trumpeting.

Regular Season (Weeks 1-5):
KC @ Ravens - Lose 49-19
* A spanking

Raiders @ KC - WIN 34-31
* The Raiders may keep us company in the cellar this season, so it's vital that we keep well ahead of any progress they make as both teams seem to re-build together. This was a huge morale booster!

KC @ Eagles - WIN 32-16
* The team is suddenly 2-1 and the hard work seems to be paying off. While it would be easy to get carried away, part of the re-building process is to soberly evaluate where you are and where you need to go. Two big victories are fantastic and feel good, but Coach Haley tries to keep things in perspective and encourage the squad to build on this early success.

NY Giants @ KC - Lose 35-21
* Clearly the Giants are a good barometer. They were able to win, but not without some character play from a Chiefs team that is learning to compete again!

Cowboys @ KC - Lose 34-28 (ot)
* A great game for the hometown faithful, not only because the Cowboys are in town and always attract intrest, but because the Chiefs did a great good of staying step for step with them, pushing the game to OT and then just coming up a bit short. The people are starting to believe along with the team.

Trade Deadline:
I've been working the phones to see what can be done to help to maximize the assests the Chiefs have presently and turn that into some regrowth opportunities.
Vrabel LB to Falcons for Mughelli FB (88 ovr) and Adkins LB and Falcons 2nd Round Draft Pick.
I see this trade as moving a player that, at age 34, would certainly not be able to win in the short term with the Chiefs. Instead we receive a talented RB and upgrade at that poisition and also a second round pick in the draft to be used to sign young talent.
Chambers WR, Goff RG and Niswanger C to Chargers, a rival in the AFC West, for Tucker LOLB, Green RG and Norman C. The key to this trade, in my mind, was obtaining Tucker and LOLB. This will add defence and we lose players in their last years, two on the offensive line, which we fully intend to draft to rebuild in the off-season.
That's it for the block-busters and multi-player deals.

The Chiefs also decided to extend the contracts of Wade WR for another 3yrs/8million dollars and Cox FB, in a backup role for the next 3yrs/2.62million dollars. At the same time, we released Castille FB simply because of the abundance at that position on the depth chart.

Regular Season (Week 6):
KC @ Redskins - Lose 18-14
* Needless to say, after all the moves we made at the deadline, the fact we then came out and lost to the Skins was not well-received at all. There's nothing like a few trades, followed by a loss, to start a rumbling in the faithful. But while the fans are a bit upset, the players are focused.

After week 6 we sit at 2-4 for the year. On the upside, we have already equalled our winning output of last year, but two wins is simply not enough.

Time to check in with the scouts and review what the first six weeks have turned up in prospects and adjust to evaluate a different set of players through the rest of the season.

The Return of The Chiefs!

First a slight disclaimer or two that may, or may not, explain some of the moves you'll read about in this dynasty!
  1. I am new to the Madden franchise with Madden 10. Have never owned the game before...have seen it played once...just never jumped in until now!
  2. I'm Canadian. We play a slightly different brand of football north of the border. I am a fan of the CFL, and while not a truly hardcore fan of the NFL, I will be now.
  3. I think I will enjoy the challenge of trying to build a football team that will someday compete for the Super Bowl!
Last Year: Of course you know that the Chiefs struggled last season. They were only able to mount a 2-14 record, the team was simply not responding and were going backwards in many ways.

New Coach: Todd Haley and a new team of coaches have been tasked with turning this around. And with a committed owner (ME) we are going to make the moves we feel needed to take this team into the playoffs and eventually compete for the ultimate prize!

Pre-Season (all games simmed):
Texans @ KC - Lose 23-17
KC @ Vikings - Tie 19-19
Seahawks @ KC - Lose 16-6
KC @ Rans - Lose 27-24

The pre-season ends with a dismal 0-3-1 record and it's quite clear there is work to do!

After evaluating the pre-season and prior to moving to the regular season, I evaluate the team and spot some opportunities.
Vrabel ROLB, at age 34, still has a couple of good years, but would also allow me to plug some other roster holes if I were to shop him for the right trade before week 6. Chambers WR also is in the twilight of his career and I would like to utilize that assest as we begin to re-build. We'll see who picks up the phone and has the best deal through the first five weeks.

I start scouting, concentrating on what I feel are the biggest ways to improve. I target the offensive line, a solid tight end and look to bolster the safety position with some new, young talent. So I target RG-RT-TE-FS-SS.
