The 2011 Super Bowl

Colts @ Packers

In short, Peyton Manning was effective but not overwhelming, but combined with the Colts defense manhandling the Pack, they won convincingly 27-9 to take The Super Bowl!
  • Manning 20-32 for 287 yards (99.3 rtg) 2 tds and 1 int
  • Collie & Wayne each caught 6 in the game
  • Rodgers sacked 3 times and threw 3 interceptions
  • Driver caught 6 as well for the Packers
One cannot help but think of what might have been had we been able to dispose of the Colts in the AFC Conference Chamionship. But, the ifs, ands and buts will simply have to remain in 2011.

It's time to start looking ahead to 2012 with all of the busy off-season activities coming up!

Hope you've enjoyed following The Return of The Chiefs - Franchise Year 3 (2011)!

I'll be back with "next year" (which really means "ASAP"), hoping for even more from The Chiefs as they continue to build on what has become a solid nucleus of players!

Stay tuned to The Chiefs Dynasty!
Comments welcome...

Conference Championships:
Colts @ KC - Lose 13-10
* It was a fantastic run, but the road ended in the AFC Conference Championship. In what was a hard-fought contest on a cold KC field, The Chiefs had a chance, but the Colts were able to hold on for the victory.

This game essentially was a slug-fest throughout and came down to a couple of plays. The Colts, on their own 36 with the game tied at 10 late in the 4th quarter, produced a 52-yard pass from Manning to Garcon with 33-seconds to go. That set them up for a last second (actually :08) field goal to take the 13-10 lead. That was the ball game!
  • Cassel 16-27 for 171 yards in the air (74.7 rtg), with 1 td and 1 int
  • Charles 17-36 yards and also caught 3-11 yards
  • Wade 3-53 yards and Bowe 3-32 yards and 1 td
  • Frazier 6-2, Merriman 6-2 and D.Johnson 6-1
  • D.Johnson and Cason both with 1 int
While it would have been fantastic to reach the Super Bowl only a couple of years after taking over the GM duties, I am extremely proud of the team and their performance in 2011. We showed that we were actually quite close two years ago and simply needed to add a few pieces to get to the next level.

I think we have a very strong core, which should bode well for the coming years. The challenge in the off-season will be to re-evaluate everyone that we have on the roster and look to find a way to push us that step further in 2012.

And, on behalf of the team, thanks to all the fans that stayed with us the past couple of years! I do hope you enjoyed this year's run and certainly hope that we can deliver even more for you next season!

NFC Conference Chamionship:

Packers 41 @ Eagles 22

So its Packers and Colts for the 2011 Super Bowl next week!

Divisonal Playoffs:
Ravens @ KC - WIN 24-14

* Simply a phenomenal game. The team came out as if they had been to the division playoffs each of the last ten years. They played like they knew they were supposed to dominate a very good Ravens team. They played a very strong defensive game and kept Flacco guessing from the first sequence.
  • Cassel 11-15 for 146 yards in the air (125.9rtg) - 1td/0int
  • Wade 4-50 yards
  • Charles 24-50 yards and 1td
  • Merriman 5 solo/1 asst
  • Williams, Jackson both had sacks
  • Carr, Fraziers both picked off Flacco
  • Succop only 1 FG, but a 50-yarder
  • Early "key" - Keys kick-off return in the first - 100 yards for a TD
Outstanding!

Rest of the Div Playoffs:

Colts 21 - Bengals 17
Eagles 34 - Saints 31 (ot)
Packers 42 - Vikings 33

Next week - Conference Finals:

Eagles @ Packers
Colts @ Chiefs

* Last time we played the Colts was in Week #13 of last year (2010) when we dropped a very close game 21-18 on a cold Kansas City day. I'm sure the conditions will be similar, if not colder, and we certainly hope the outcome is completely different!

See ya next week!!!

If I may step "out of character" for a blog entry, I thought it might be interesting to note the season stats Chiefs 2011 in my Madden 10 franchise vs Chiefs 2009 in real life:

Madden BOLD
* I use the Bill's v3 sliders/fast speed/all Spectate mode

Passing - Cassel *15 games real life/16 Madden
271-493 for 2924 yds (55%) - 194.9ypg - 16td - 16 int (69.9rtg)
286-438 for 3726 yds (65%) - 232.8ypg - 33td - 22int (96.1rtg)

Rushing - Charles *15 games real life/16 Madden
190-1120 yds - 5.89ypc - 7td
286-1180 yds - 4.1ypc - 10td

Receiving - WR Chambers/TE Leoni (most yards) - both all 16 games
45-730 yds - 45.6ypg - 5td
46-818 yds - 51.1ypg - 8td

Defense
LB Williams & CB Flowers/LB Johnson & SS Frazier
Williams - 117 total - 95 solo - 22 asst - 0 sacks - 0 td

17-24 (70%)

Punting - Colquitt
96 for 4361 yards (45.4 avg)

* 2011 much better team (less punting), and he's 2 years older??

Just thought I would pass this along...

Wild Card Games:

Ravens 19 - Patriots 14
Eagles 20 - Bears 13
Colts 40 - Chargers 20
Vikings 37 - 49ers 32

So, the Divisional Playoff picture is set for next week:

Colts @ Bengals
Eagles @ Saints
Vikings @ Packers
Ravens @ KC Chiefs

We haven't seen the Ravens since the beginning of the 2009 regular season, when we we just on the road to rebuilding, losing 49-19. I know we have more for them in the playoffs this year and I'm confindent neither of us will take the other lightly. While we haven't been here for a while, we appreciate what it means and want very much to extend our season!

With the playoffs here, and The Chiefs very much a part of it, while the team prepares for the winner of the Wild Card week, I thought I would sum up what was an outstanding regular season so that we can then simply concentrate on the task at hand...winning in the post-season for the first time in a long time!

Hi-Lites:

WR Leilon Black - NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year 2011
QB Matt Cassel - NFL Best Quarterback 2011

Coach Todd Haley, by the way, second in the Coach of the Year voting!

Pro Bowlers:
QB Cassel
CB Flowers
SS Frazier
TE Leoni
CB Dyles (as a Rookie - 3rd Round, drafted 68th overall)

Congratulations to the entire team.
May we find even more success in the post-season!

First - Once again I have outpaced my blogging and I am currently (in "real time") working through the pre-season games in 2012. I have completed all of my off-season activities, after wrapping 2011 (I LOVE Madden and Franchise mode), and will report that chronologically! But, in an effort to learn as much as I can about Madden and the NFL, both through the forums (OS of course) and through Googling information, upon doing a little more research into the NFL salary cap and contracts, I discovered the following:
  1. Teams can sign rookies picked in the first half of the first round of the draft to a max 6-year contract.
  2. Players from the second half of the first round can only be signed to a max 5-year contract.
  3. Players taken after round one can only be signed to a max 4-year contract.
  4. Rookie deals cannot be renegotiated in the first two years.

Without turning this into a debate about whether this should be in the game or not (it would be nice, but probably would have to be adjusted per every negotiated CBA), clearly the game will let you do things outside of these rules.

Again while researching how to play franchise mode I came across a very informative article that suggested, mainly because they'll sign for minimal cash, signing lower picks simply to 7-years at that minimum. If it turns out you made a decent potential/ovr pick, then you've got a long term, GREAT contract for a player that clearly would demand more when the time came.

So, with that said, please understand that I DID NOT discover this, unfortunately, until I had gone through another draft! For the record, I just HAPPENED to follow the rules with my first couple of picks, but did sign later picks to 6 and 7-year deals! Going forward, I will FOLLOW the rules as outlined by the NFL CBA, as it currently stands.

The source, by the way: Ask The Commish.com

Part of the fun of playing offline franchise, for me, is learning stuff like this!!!

Regular Season:
Week 17 - KC @ Patriots - WIN 13-10
* What a way to close out the regular season and get pumped for the playoffs!
  • KC 13-3 at the half
  • Cassel 14-24 for 176 yards and 1 td
  • Charles 17-42 cold yards on the ground
  • Bowe had a good game 4-54 yards, the longest being a 31 yard beauty
  • Dyles, Flowers, Cason (with 1:04 in the 4th to snuff any hope) all with ints
  • S.Johnson with an incredible 56 yard kickoff return
The simple key to this one...never letting Brady get started and find Welker and Moss with any sort of rhythm! Simple to say, very tough to execute, but the team totally responded!

The Chiefs finish an impressive 1st in the AFC West, with a record of 12-4!
The Bengals, by the way, were division champs, putting together a 9-game winning streak to end the year with a 14-2 record. They will certainly be a team to watch in the playoffs.
BUT SO WILL THE CHIEFS!!!

See you after the Wild Cards...

Regular Season:
Week 16 - KC @ Bears - WIN 42-19
* Chicago, Christmas Eve, festival yes, but darn chilly too! At game time it was a mere 30F and would tax everyone, both on the field and in the stands. We felt we really needed to send a message home to our faitfhul because we were finishing with two on the road. Chicago played along it seems!
  • Cassel was outstanding 22-28 for 288 yards (134.2 rtg) and 4 tds
  • Charles ran the ball 17-99 yards and 2 tds
  • Black was outstanding 5-116 yards and 2 tds
  • Wade, Bowe and Nughelli all had 4 catches
  • Frazier, Johnson and Dyles each had 1 int
The only blenish was that Succop drove another one into the upright for the second game in a row and, for the second time, it fell harmlessly away instead of going through. What are the odds?

With this victory, and our 11-4 record, we clicnh a playoff spot! That was the goal coming into 2011.
Cassel, by the way, leads all AFC Pro Bowl voting at the moment.
As many as 5 Chiefs could see Pro Bowl time this year if the voting holds for another week.

The 12-3 Patriots in the final week. This should be good...
Stay tuned!

Regular Season:
Week 14 - Dolphins @ KC - Lose 19-17

* I think we simply took our eye of the ball again. We were defeated by a team 4-8 coming in that just seemed to have our number. And we certainly did not help our own cause by turning the ball over 5 times, and losing every one of them!
  • Not much of a ground attack this game
  • Cassel picked 3 times (an on-again/off-again problem)
  • Leoni a bright spot 5-135 yards and 2 tds
  • Bowe, Long, Charles and Wade all good games too
  • Darby, Williams, Cason stood out on defense
We're 10-3 and still looking to improve in the final weeks. The Patriots have clinched the AFC East as of this week, with an 11-2 record. As mentioned, we see them last this year!

Week 15 - Raiders @ KC - Lose 15-14

* We're in them, but just can't seem to win them. These close losses are starting to get tough on the mental stamina. And again we seem to let up on what should be easy motivation, playing a rival at home!
  • Charles 20-100 yards on the ground, with 1 td
  • Wade with 5 catches, Leoni 3 and 1 td
  • Dyles outstanding on defense with 5 tackles
  • Frazier with 2 important ints
  • Succop had a tough end of game
We could, and indeed should, have one this game...simple as that. Even though we fumbled the ball while marching down the field with only 1:05 to go, we were fortunate to recover. Cassel moved us in the last minute to within FG range. With :02 on the clock, Succop dinged one off the upright that fell harmlessly to the turf - no good! And that was his only FGA of the entire game. It just wasn't in the cards this game!

By the way, with two weeks to go, we're 10-4 and there's really nothing settled yet in the AFC West:
  1. Chiefs 10-4
  2. Chargers 9-5
  3. Raiders 8-6
  4. Broncos 6-8
This will go down to the final week I'm sure, barring anything strange!

Regular Season:
Week 12 - KC @ Raiders - Lose 21-16

* Iwould love to have this one back. Our six game winning streak ended in Oakland. What started out as a track meet ended in a tough defensive battle and while we were good in both ways when needed, we were simply beaten on this day.
  • Bowe, Charles and Wade lead all receivers
  • Johnson, Williams and Darby were great defenisively, especially in the second half
  • Cassel 25-30, most of that early, for 362 yards and a (125.2 rtg) with 2 tds and 1 int
Our record is now 9-2 on the year and we lose a little ground to the Patriots who are 10-1. I do hope the team responds well after what has to be a bit of a low after our run of consecutive victories.
By the way, not to give anything away, but looking ahead in our schedule, we do end the year against the Patriots in which hopefully we be a huge contest for both teams! But, let's not look too far ahead and focus on next week.

Week 13 - KC @ Jaguars - WIN 31-14

* It was a nice feeling to see the squad put last week completely behind them and handle a tough Jaguar team. The win put us at 10-2, matching our sponsor promise of a ten-win season during the life of our three-year agreement, so I am thrilled from a front office standpoint.
  • LE Jackson - NFL Defensive Player of the Week with 3 tackles, 3 sacks and 1 int
  • Garrard sacked EIGHT times in this one
I love my D!!!
We were outstanding, greeting Garrard everytime he touched the ball, or greeting anyone else that happened to receive it from him, when he did get rid of it. This was sweet.

Regular Season:
Week 10 - KC @ Lions - WIN 27-20

* Our victory over the Lions extended what is now a 5 games winning streak. This was a tough game against a 5-3 team coming in and we were ready.
  • 507 total yards in the game
  • Cassel 18-22 for 249 yards passing and 3 touchdowns
  • Charles was a machine with 22 carries for 102 yards
  • Wade and Long both had tds
  • Frazier and Dorsey ints
It's nice to look at the standings and focus on the top for a change. We are tied with the Patriots atop the AFC and the NFL with 8-1 records.

Week 11 - Bills @ KC - WIN 21-3

* Much like the recent Browns game, I was a little worried about the Bills coming into town. But the team was ready, responded and simply would not disappoint the hometown crowd! That puts us at 9-1 for the year and statistically atop the NFL standings.
  • We did have three turnovers and lost them all
  • Cassel went 17-28 for 235 yards, 2 tds and 1 int
  • The "D Rookies" were great - Darby, Williams and second-year Frazier
  • Charles ran 25 times for 97 yards and caught 5 for 1 td
  • Leoni, Bowe and Wade all had an outstanding game
The Bills simply had nothing for an answer when we pushed hard on them. The guys are making me look very good. I've always believed...now they're sharing that with me!

Regular Season:
Week 8 - Vikings @ KC - WIN 21-13

* If we thought Green Bay was a test, having the 5-1 Vikings come to town was an even bigger test at this midway point of the season. Two 5-1 squads meeting on our turf...Love it!
  • 402 total yards of offense (and 63% 3rd down conversions)
  • Charles 20 carries for 68 yards, Black 6-58 yards and a td
  • Both Keys and Merriman has great defensive games for us
  • Cassel 17-24 (122.1 rtg) and 3 tds (only tossing 1 int)
We are 6-1 and rolling! The Chiefs now rank 3rd in the AFC, behind the Ravens and Patriots both with 7-1 records. And of course, the season already eclipses the number of wins we put up last year. Huge home victory with another home game next weekend.

Week 9 - Browns @ KC - WIN 31-3

* The 1-6 Browns could easily have been a problem. They are struggling and after coming off the big win over the Vikes, it might have been easy to look past Cleveland. I am proud of the team because they went to work and really never let the Browns into the game!
  • Cassel, Player of the Game, 23-35 with 4 tds
  • Charles had 6 catches for 43 yards
  • Leoni caught 2 td passes
  • Wade and Williams also caught td passes
  • Johnson, Frazier, Cason and Keys each picked one
That victory takes us to 7-1 on the season. Not that I would tell the team, but I am anxious to see if we can live up to our sponsor goal in the agreement we signed prior to last year of 10 victories or a playoff berth. Either way, being 5-0 at home, in front of a crowd that we put through tough times last season feels great!
