Wild Card Playoffs

Bengals 30 - Steelers 27 (ot)
Redskins 26 - Eagles 9
Colts 37 - Ravens 9
Saints 30 - Falcons 25

* Looks like we'll draw the Bengals (9-6-1 in the regular season) in the Divisional Playoffs next weekend.

We didn't see the Bengals this year, but did play them in Week 2 of 2012, when we beat them 16-6 in Cinci!

Awards:

I am again pleased to announce that the NFL's "Best Quarterback Award" goes to Matt Cassel. Matt, despite starting very slowly and having some interceptions creep into his game partway through the season, finished strong and put up some spectacular numbers. This award is well-deserved!

End of Season Stats

Here are some notable stats put up by our team over the season.

CB Cason - Tied for 1st in the NFL with 7 interceptions on the year!

CB Flowers - 1st overall in the NFL with 3 defensive touchdowns, all by the way, coming in Week 15 against the Colts on three interceptions!

QB Cassel - Highest completion percentage of any NFL quarterback on the season at 69%!

Kansas City Chiefs 2013 Pro-Bowlers:

I am thrilled to report that we have five players that have gained a spot in this year's Pro Bowl!

DT Orien Williams
CB Brandon Flowers
CB Antoine Cason
QB Matt Cassel
RG Branden Albert

I'm especially happy to see both Cason and Albert repeat again this year.

Regular Season - Week 17

KC @ Cowboys - Lose 13-10

We took a 4-game winning streak down to Big D and didn't not perform all that well. It seemed that we just could not get anything going on the ground or in the air. As a result we dropped a game I was very confident we could win! And unfortunately, did it in the last week of the regular season.
  • QB Cassel 12-20 145 yds 1 td and 2 ints
  • WR Mack 1 td catch
  • LE T.Jackson 3 sacks

An additional stat that showed the difference in this game. We were a pitiful 2-10 (20%) on 3rd down conversions. You're just not going to get it done that way!

And, despite everything, the game essentially came down to a Dallas FG with just :22 on the clock. We were that far away from, yet that close to at least sending this to extra time.

Good News however!

We close out the season with a record of 10-5-1 and that is good enough to have come back from last place to Win the AFC West Division, out pacing both the Broncos and Chargers, who will not see playoff action, with identical records of 9-7.

It looks like we'll have the wild card week off to prepare for our next game, based on the results from next weekend!

Regular Season - Week 16

Titans @ KC - WIN 34-6

This was the first meeting between the Chris Johnson Chiefs and the formerly Chris Johnson Titans since we acquire the HB through free agency at the beginning of the year. And while he looked a bit nervous and didn't have his typically stellar game, he certainly did not disappoint, nor did the rest of our squad! We had a great game.
  • HB C.Johnson 21-63
  • QB Cassel 17-23 231 yds (145.1 rtg) 4 tds
  • LE T.Jackson 2 sacks
  • ROLB Merriman, LOLB Darby, MLB Tulloch and DT O.Williams each had 1 sack
  • WR Black 4-37 yds 2 tds
  • WR Bowe 3-71 yds 2 tds
  • CB Cason and Dyles 1 int each
  • K Succop 2-2 (longest 54 yds)

We're now in a good position 10-4-1 heading to week 17 on top of the AFC West. The playoff picture has yet to be officially decided, but we feel very good.

Regular Season - Week 15

Colts @ KC - WIN 34-24

This was a major victory for The Chiefs defense. While we had a decent, if unspectacular game on offense, our D simply was outstanding and gets full credit for this victory over Manning and the Colts!
  • CB Flowers 1 tkl and 3 int (all 3 for TDs)!
  • WR Mack 4, WR Bowe 3 and HB C.Johnson 3 catches
  • QB Cassel 14-24 149 yds
  • HB C.Johnson 17-91 and 1 td on the ground

What can I say, Brandon Flowers had a superb game. He returned three interceptions for touchdowns! The longest was 104 yards. Simply phenomenal and truly the difference in this game.

If we can fire on all cylinders with both the offense and defense, I like our chances of going deep this season! We're now 9-4-1 and feeling good about the next two weeks.

By the way, Brandon Flowers - NFL Defensive Player of the Week! Congratulations on behalf of the entire Chiefs organization!

Regular Season - Week 14

KC @ Jaguars - WIN 17-9

Coming off the tight Baltimore game, we seemed to have remained a little on the tight side. The not-so-great news is that we came out a little slow and again only put up enough points to win, but the much better news was that we absolutely limited the Jags to only three field goals through the entire game. Defense will be key as we get to the post-season, IF indeed that's in the cards this year!
  • QB Cassel 12-15 119 yds (121.9 rtg) 1 td
  • HB C.Johnson 19-123 yds
  • HB Charles 2 runs for 1 td
  • HB Charles also caught 4 for another td

Chalk up another one. The fact that we seem to be putting up numbers in the win column and both the Broncos and Chargers seem to have hit a soft spot means that our now 8-4-1 record has vaulted The Chiefs into 1st place AFC West! This is great news! And hopefully yet another piece of motivation on which to build.

Peyton Manning and The Colts come next as we return home!

Regular Season - Week 13

KC @ Ravens - WIN 19-17

This was the first chance for Coach Harbaugh to face his former team and while we just barely put up a victory, we did take the two points and that's the most important thing! Allowing Coach Harbaugh bragging rights, at least for the time being, bonus!
  • HB C.Johnson 23-89 1 td rushing/ 5-53 yds by air
  • CB (FS) Watsha 1 sack
  • CB Bailey(r), CB Cason and ROLB Merriman each with 1 int
  • QB Cassel 21-30 266 yds (83.5 rtg)

We seemed to do what we had to to win, but not much more. We might have been just a little bit tentative coming off the Chargers loss. We really need to get back to the place where we believe totally in ourselves and the ability we have to shut down anyone, at anytime!

Jags are next on December 15th in Week 14.
We're 7-4-1.

Regular Season - Week 12

KC @ Chargers - Lose 24-3

This was a big test for us and, well, we did not respond. The Chargers came in 6-4 on the year, to our 6-3-1. We had met them in Week 3 and lost, and frankly I was hoping for a little more. We seemed to be on a nice bit of a roll and I felt certain we would have a better game.
  • QB Cassel 14-21 166 yds (51.0 rtg) 4 ints!

It might be worthwhile to list some of the opposition accomplishments and a key stat that seemed to contribute to our demise.
  • San Diego CB Cromartie and SS Ellison each picked 2
  • We were 0-8 on 3rd down conversions

We remain 3rd in the AFC West and simply have to find a solution for both the Broncos and/or Chargers before the season is out!

Regular Season - Week 11

Giants @ KC - WIN 33-10

Outstanding game! We dominated when we had to and, for the most part, completely shut down the Giants.
  • QB Cassel 14-18 158 yds (140.2 rtg) 2 tds
  • HB C.Johnson 26-101 yds and 1 td
  • WR Bowe 5-72 and 1 td
  • WR Mack with 1 td
  • Defense combined for 2 sacks and 3 ints

With the win we now sit at 6-3-1 and have risen to second place in the tough AFC West Division. Only the Broncos out pace us in the standing, for the moment!

We have a stiff test coming at the beginning of December, when we meet the Chargers in San Diego. They stand at 6-4, so this will certainly determine at least second place for the moment.

We'll have a great week of practice and make sure we're ready.

Regular Season - Week 10

Jets @ KC - WIN 30-29

Needless to say a nail-biter, but one from which we emerged victorious. Altogether a great game and one that we really had to dig down deep to win. And also a bit of vindication for the pre-season loss in New York against the Jets.
  • MLB D.Johnson 2 sacks 7 tkls
  • SS Frazier 1 int
  • QB Cassel 19-23 332 yds (147.7 rtg) 2 td
  • HB C.Johnson 1 td
  • WR Mack 7-99 yds
  • WR S.Johnson 1 td
  • WR Bowe 1 td

Our record jumps to 5-31 on the year. And, much like the pre-season, we have back-to-back contests with New York teams as the Giants are in town next week!

Regular Season - Week 9

KC @ Texans - WIN 37-17

The Texans came in with the better record, even though coming off a loss the previous weekend, and this was a stiff test of our abilities. I'm thrilled that we answered so decisively.
  • HB C.Johnson 23-228 yds (2 td) on the ground and 5-71 yds air
  • HB Charles 4-17 (1 td)
  • TE Leoni 5-74 (1 td)
  • SS Frazier and ROLB Merriman 4-1 tkls
  • K Succop 3-3 FG (incl 55 yd)
  • QB Cassel 14-21 161 yds (65.8 rtg)

This was a team effort, in every sense. We seemed to be on top of our game on the ground, in the air and on defense. And even with a rather plain outing by QB Cassel, we dominated the Texans.

Our record is creeping up. We stand 4-3-1, but in the tough AFC West this year that still has us sitting in 3rd place in our division behind the Broncos and Chargers.

Regular Season - Week 8

Bye Week!

Bye weeks are truly so much better when you've come off a decent win and feel good about yourself and your teammates. It allows quality practice time and a chance to work on things that need work, without any additional pressure, other than simply trying to be the best you can be.

The Texans are next. We hop the plane for a date in Houston on November 10th. We'll be ready!

Regular Season - Week 7

KC @ Eagles - WIN 58-17

When, on the opening kick-off, the Eagles returned the kick all the way for a touchdown, thankfully only to have it called back on a clip, I thought we were in for another long day. Not so.

The team responded nicely to the initial shock and put together a very solid game.
  • DT O.Williams 4 sacks and 4 tkls
  • HB C.Johnson 20-189 yds (incl a 58 yd TD run)
  • WR Black and FB Mughelli 2 tds each
  • TE Leoni 1 td
  • QB Cassel 18-21 346 yds (158.3 rtg) and 5 td passes

We looked very good in virtually all aspects of our game. That takes our record to 3-3-1 on the season and I am encouraged by the power output in the past couple of games. I like to think that we have hit our stride and that any initial adversity is behind us.

And, in retrospect, I truly am glad that we didn't tinker with the roster at the trade deadline, possibly introducing a whole new round of trying to generate team chemistry had we changed a few of the pieces. Let's hope we're solid the rest of the way!

Regular Season - Week 6

Broncos @ KC - WIN 45-31

Much better performance. I know that is more like we can play, hopefully consistently, week to week.
  • 662 Totals yards
  • 8-11 (72%) 3rd Conversions
  • 6-6 Red Zone
  • QB Cassel 21-29 293 yds (104.5 rtg)
  • HB C.Johnson 24-162 yds
  • WR Mack, Black, Bowe and TE Leoni and Dantonio 4 catches each and 4 tds total
  • CB Cason and Flowers ints

I am proud that we bounced back impressively against the defending Super Bowl Champions. Not only does that erase a couple of recent games that stung badly, but I hope it allows us to turn a corner and truly believe we are as good as we should be going forward!

I am now going into a meeting with our Franchise Scouting people to hear their report on their first six weeks in the field and to set up some new scouting assignments for them. And yes, just as a purely precautionary measure, I am going to suggest that we make sure we look at a few QB's in the next six weeks to see if there is any promising talent we should be seeing!
