Regular Season - Week 2

We met our division rivals, the Oakland Raiders, in the second week of the season, which would prove to be another test early!

After a decent first quarter, we lapsed in the second and let the Raiders not only get into the game, but put up some numbers. It took everything we had to claw our way back through the third and final quarters against Kaven Duncan and a very good throwing arm. But, we're 2-0 on the season and feel great!

Chiefs win Home Opener 2014

The Chiefs battled the Super Bowl contenders in the first week of the regular season and what a battle! The two teams seemed to be feeling their way into the season, with neither really outstanding and both being rather tentative.

But the victory resulted in our first win and we're 1-0 to open the new season! And that is the main thing.

* Inspired by what I've seen elsewhere in the dynasties, I thought this season I would generate actual box scores for you to view. A little more work, but much easier to digest.

Hope you enjoy the new (6th) season in "The Return of The Chiefs"?

I see several places where we might consider making some moves to improve the team.

I was a little disappointed in the sharp drop-off of ROLB Merriman this past season. He seems to have lost the starting job at that position to relative newcomer ROLB Anderson, which makes him an excellent commodity to look at moving, to both clear out some cap space, but also look to improve elsewhere with his trade value.

FB Mughelli has given us some very consistent work the past several years, but he too has been challenged at every step by FB Jefferson and the youngster will be itching to get some reps at the FB position, so that may also provide us with options.

And clearly we have a three way battle for the QB position. QB Cassel is going into the final year of his contract. We have talked and he appears willing to entertain another short-term deal, but we're going to keep all of our options open and, if needed, be willing to try some things at QB with the three strong candidates we have at that position, should anyone of them falter. Then of course, we could look to move someone to free up some cap space if needed. But, for now, the job is certainly Matt's!

Anything else would really have to blow me away or someone would have to fail big-time to make any additional moves in time for the trade deadline!

Pre-Season - Week 4

Vikings @ KC - WIN 31-28

This game was actually three games in one it seemed. In the first half, it was a good old-fashioned shootout as we traded touchdowns with the Vikes and ended the half 21-21. In the second half things slowed considerably and we battled hard for every down it seemed. Then there was the last few minutes...

With the game tied at 28 and very little time left, QB White tossed an interception that really hurt. On the very next play, the Vikings also tossed one right into our hands. And that, thankfully, allowed us to kick the game winning field goal on the very next and last play of the game for the 3-point victory. Outstanding action and a character-builder!
  • QB Cassel 5-10 186 yds (135.4 rtg) and 2 TD
  • QB White 10-14 158 yds (92.8 rtg) and 1 TD
  • FB Jefferson 3-82 yds and 1 TD

While we clearly have some places in which we could likely improve, I feel we had a great pre-season and have a great mix of veteran and youth on our squad. The team appears ready, not to dominate, but will keep themselves in every game I hope, with the opportunity to win each week!

On to the regular season...

Pre-Season - Week 3

KC @ Saints - Lose 27-17

This game, despite the loss, was actually quite closer than the score would indicate. We battled hard and still put most of the players on the field to give them a workout and continue to assess our team.
  • HB C.Johnson 10-33 yds
  • HB Charles 8-34 yds
  • LE T.Jackson 2 sacks

We have a healthy battle at the quarterback position. Both Cassel and White are splitting time and both seem to be anxious to prove they are the number one guy! In some cases, I think this may actually be causing them to under-perform a bit because it would appear they are trying too hard and are forcing things a little, which is reflected in their stats. But overall, this has to be better for the team, so we're loving and indeed encouraging it!

Pre-Season - Week 2

KC @ Jets - Lose 20-10

Well, there goes the undefeated season!
Purely a joke because the objective in the pre-season is, of course, to see what you have and what you may need to look at in the first five weeks before the trade deadline hits.

In this case we happened upon a couple of cool quarterbacks.
  • QB White 10-23 175 yds (66.4 rtg) and 1 TD
  • QB Cassel 8-14 81 yds (44.1 rtg)
  • HB Charles 6-23 yds
  • TE Lopez 4-47 yds
  • WR Bowe 3-85 yds and 1 TD
  • MLB Walker 6-1 tkls and 1 sack
  • RE Walker and LE T.Jackson each 1 sack
  • K Fitte 1-1 FG (long 25)

Pre-Season - Week 1

Bills @ KC - WIN 17-10

Good start. We worked through as many players as we could on the depth chart to get a feel for what we have. And it will take a little time for the slightly tweaked offensive line to fully gel.

As mentioned after the draft, we did start LT Taite and move LT Burnett into the LG position. I hope they all have enough time to both flourish and progress early in this season.
  • CB Keys (2), CB Bailey, CB Cason, MLB D.Johnson and MLB Walker with INTs
  • QB Cassel 8-12 130 yds (130.5 rtg) and 1 TD
  • QB White 3-7 41 yds (62.2 rtg)
  • HB Charles 15-42 yds
  • HB C.Johnson 14-49 yds and 1 TD
  • MLB Walker 5 tkls

As mentioned, a great start. You can certainly tell the defense is way ahead of the offense in this first game, but we hope to have everyone fully firing by the start of the regular season!

Draft Day 2014

The Draft:

* Note that we made some moves prior to the draft that involved picks, as a result we have a high 1st rounder, then move to the 5th round.

Round 1 (Pick 4) - QB Ramzee White
Round 5 (Pick 132) - LT J.Taite
Round 5 (Pick 143) - TE C.Lopez
Round 5 (Pick 150) - LOLB T.Browning
Round 5 (Pick 154) - RE B.Walker
Round 6 (Pick 182) - FB B.Pearson
Round 7 (Pick 218) - LE E.Edwards

Our Draft Grade this year was again a "C". Best choice was deemed QB White and our Best value was said to be LT Taite in the 5th round.
Texans were again, but the only, team able to draft rated "A+"!

Rookie Signings:

* NOTE: Again this year (and going forward), I will abide by the current CBA outline (as I previously mentioned in this dynasty blog) of:
First half of first round - at most 6 years
Second half of first round - at most 5 years
After round one - no more than 4 years
Rookie contracts not to be renegotiated in first two years

* This IS more of a CAP challenge as players spent a shorter amount of time in their first, and usually lower, contracts!

* And this year I have include the draft picks "OVR" number and "Potential" (learned after signing their contracts of course).

QB Ramzee White - 6-years/68-million 78 C
LT J.Taite - 4-years/1.88-million 85 A
TE C.Lopez - 4-years/1.32-million 75 B
LOLB T.Browning - 4-years/1.32-million 71 B
RE B.Walker - 4-years/1.88-million 85 A
FB B.Pearson - 4-years/1.32-million 66 A
LE E.Edwards - 4-years/1.32-million 72 C

I was a little disappointed in the 1st round overall and potential stats, but I do think we have found some true winners in LT Taite (who I see starting this coming season at that position) and also RE Walker (who will soon be starting I'm sure). Unfortunately he'll be playing behind the newly re-signed RE Dorsey and they both have 4-year contracts.

After all the moves and the signing of draft picks, I think we have a solid squad again for the coming season. But, as seems to happen with a veteran, contending team, we have again maximized our CAP and sit with 550k (1.95mil penalties).

We'll have to be very careful about the moves we make this year, if any, to stay under the cap and still improve our team, without being penalized too much further with money that will go against the next year CAP.

Re-Signing Players

Re-Signed and/or Extended Player Contracts

We re-signed RE Dorsey to a 4year/38million agreement, keeping him in our defensive line!

We were also very excited to sit down with a handful of players going into the last year of their contracts that we feel are key to our longer term outlook. WR Black bargained very hard, but agreed to a 6year/55.45million contract. We also worked hard to sign DT O.Williams to a long-term 6year/73.33million agreement, feeling he was a cornerstone to our defense.

Also signing new extensions, LE T.Jackson, coming off a great year, to a 4year/42.5million contract and CB Bailey to 4years/19.8million.

Released Players

The following players, for a variety of reasons, were not offered new agreements with the team this season.
** Mainly our attempt to still have some salary cap with which to sign draft picks for the coming year, including a first round pick.

LG Waters
FS Watsha
RG Page
ROLB Hali
TE Dantonio
RE Hayes

We also released outright SS C.Williams.

Pre-Draft Trades

I am happy to report the following trades made just prior to the draft.

** And I must confess (as the real human, not the Chiefs "Dynasty GM" that I believe I made a very bad mistake in judging the "scouting" and up-coming "draft", which I am happy to relay.
I looked at Scouting after year-end and noted a player that felt would help us big-time, which we had scouted and had great numbers. He was in the first seven names listed so I felt we MUST trade something with a bottom five team to get a higher first round pick.
I did that PRIOR TO the actual draft commencing (as you'll read below).
Once the draft actually started, I was devastated to learn that the player I was interested in was expected to go in the FIFTH round! Clearly I blew some draft picks given that scenario.
BUT, I should also point out that the best available player when we did draft in the first round was a pretty decent looking QB that I did pick up and ultimately sign (again as you'll read).
But I did learn that the probably better way to do this is to wait until the start of the draft and then, despite the frenzy in those first picks, do the deal then, once you could see some of the truly top prospects on the draft board.
Oh well. Duly noted and a learning experience!

The Chiefs traded MLB Tulloch to the Steelers for 5th, 6th and 7th Round Picks in the draft.

We also traded WR S.Johnson and 6th and 7th picks to the Bears for their 5th pick.

And finally, in an effort to put our first round pick much higher in that first round because of a player our scouting team had uncovered and would perfectly fill a now-vacant position on our roster, we traded our 1st, 2nd and 3rd picks to the Detroit Lions for their 1st pick (4th overall)!

We also traded LE Mason to the Jaguars for SS Maxwell and next years 5th pick!
* This trade actually occurred JUST prior to the pre-season, but I am including it here for consistency.

Front Office - Off-Season 2014

Stadium Upgrades
This year we decided on 5-Star Restaurant (10.25 mil), Nano Grass (15.75 mil) and EA Arcade (2.1 mil)!

Sponsorship
I was really hoping that we could cash a Vandelay cheque for $25-million last year with a Super Bowl appearance, but that was obviously not the case. That said, I am happy to report that we have again reached an agreement with Vandelay World Bank for the next three years valued at $12-million. Their expectations are 14 wins and we certainly expect to do everything we can to deliver!

Retirements
We did not have any retiring players this off-season!

The Chiefs - Franchise Year 6 (2014)

Front Office

Coaching Staff:

While we have Coach Harbaugh locked up for 2 more years, we did have some work to do this off-season with the coaching staff. Of the coaches to finish 2013, only one was invited to sign a contract renewal and, with respect to Coach Harbaugh, we decided to go with 2-year contracts for all the assistant coaches so we could re-asses things together, if all goes well, two years from now.

Defensive Coordinator: Mel Tucker
Mel is our only returning assistant coach. Mel was signed to a 2year/760k contract and his experience will help our secondary by bringing a +3 in CB-FS-SS PRC.

Offensive Coordinator: Gene Kubiak
Gene was a great find, at just the right time for us. Gene was signed to a 2year/1.25-million contract, during the negotiate of which we did have to pry him away from a very aggressive Washington Redskins management group. Gene comes with experience and a +5 LG-C-RG RBF, which we hope will improve our ground game and offensive line overall.

Special Teams Coach: Al Saunders
Al was indeed a great hire. Al's experience is actually as an offensive coordinator, but we asked him to take on the role of special teams coach and he jumped at it. Al signed a 2year/720k contract with the team and brings with him a +5 WR RTE/AWR/RLS.

We are also pleased to announce the hiring of Pumping Iron Training Staff, who will add +3 to our QB THP.

We really feel that we have addressed specific needs and wants during the off-season and feel good going into 2014 about the new coaching staff!

Divisional Playoffs

Bengals @ KC - Lose 10-7

Another disheartening end to a season with such promise. While I am truly proud of my team, this was again a tough way to bow out after a season in which we fought back regularly. But it was also a season when we just never got traction in some games, as was the case this week!
  • QB Cassel 13-22 142 yds
  • HB C.Johnson 20-81 yds rushing and 4-32 yds in the air
  • HB Charles 2-16 and 1 td
  • ROLB Merriman and DT O.Williams both with a sack each

Certainly one of the telling statistics was the fact Cassel was sacked a total of 6 times on the day. You just do not win without a great offensive live. I thought (and still do) we had the pieces in place. But, as always, we'll dissect and revisit to see where we can improve our time to be ready for 2014 ahead!

Until next season, we'll be watching the rest of the playoffs like any other fan of the NFL.

Stay tuned for off-season news and of course, draft day. I'm excited...this year we do have a first round pick and we'll certainly see if we can do some things to improve the team around or on draft day itself!
