We are back in Kansas City and to the delight of our fans, were able to dispose of the Buffalo Bills in Week 14. But certainly not without their help!
This game can pretty well be summed up by just looking at two lines on the stats page - Penalties and Turnovers. The Bills ran themselves backward half the distance of the field on the day and when they were committing penalties, they were handing us the ball. The turned the ball over 5 times and we were lucky enough to come away with it 4 of those times and that simply was the difference on this day!
We had great games from Leilon Black, catching five for two touchdowns, and also from Kolbe Anderson, who was a one-man wrecking crew out there on defense.
With the win, we're 11-2 on the year and I'm thrilled to say that we have just clinched the AFC West division, another treat for the hometown crowd after our extended road trip!
The rest of the schedule is shaping up nicely for us. We have a couple of teams well below us in terms of records and then have a stiff match-up with the Broncos in week 17 that should give us a very good indication of how ready we are for the, now confirmed, post-season.

We took our 10-1 record to the west coast once again to play the rival Chargers and came up just a little short, losing 28-21.
This week we seemed to have the tables turned on us a bit. I'm not sure if it's because we're at the end of the longest road trip I can ever remember in the NFL or we were enjoying the beautiful west coast weather, but our running game simply was not there this week.
San Diego was able to mount an efficient ground game that produced a couple of Marcus Jackson touchdowns and also controlled the clock throughout the game.
Even then, we were actually in this thing until the end, but couldn't match the trading of touchdowns that this became!
We'll now head home 10-2 and celebrate our success with the K.C. fans when we take on the Bills!

First a little rant about the NFL schedule makers for 2014. We have been on the road now since last playing in week 7. Given the next week was a bye week and we will still be on the road next weekend, that will be we've been away from our fans for seven weeks of football! It's truly a shame we couldn't be sharing more of our success with them in person.
The Cinci game was simply awesome. Had we kept old friend FB Ovie Mughelli off the scoreboard (and great to see him achieving success after the trade) in the fourth quarter, we just might have shut the Bengals out at home!
We forced the issue every chance we could. Chris was awesome on the ground again and Matt had a very good game, throwing for 3 touchdowns.
We've hit what I consider the landmark of 10 wins on the year. I notice that the Steelers have clinched their division as of this week. There's is among the weakest, while ours has been traditionally very strong the past several years, but I have every confidence that the team will get there soon and then we can divide time between playing out the season and doing the best we can record-wise and beginning to focus on the post-season. But, let's not get ahead of ourselves...

This was a slightly different match-up for us. The New England Patriots still have their primary weapons Brady, Moss and Welker, but I believe their supporting cast isn't quite what used to take them to the Super Bowl. We can all relate, it's difficult to have all the pieces in place at just the right time.
This was also a slightly different game than we've been running the past several weeks with great success. In New England we simply could not generate a running attack at all! The stats will show that our run suffered, as did our time of possession. But, like the great quarterback that he has become, Matt Cassel simply drop-shifted into pass mode and put up 310 yards. And again he did that utilizing his wide outs, tight ends and both the half back and full back positions out of the backfield. It was actually quite impressive to sit back and watch.
With the victory we remain atop our division and also sit atop the AFC. We remain focused and confident, but with the experience our team has had over the past several seasons, certainly not overly so!

So far this year we have been challenge by our two other AFC West rivals, the Raiders and the Chargers, but it wasn't until this game in week 10 that we had a chance to asses the Broncos. And that likely means we'll enjoy a return visit to K.C. in the coming weeks too!
While the score might indicate that this was closer than it really was, I like to think that the outcome was never really in doubt. Once again we simply pounded away at the ground game, chewing up valuable time and real estate and, when needed, throw some play action passes for touchdowns.
Our entire backfield has been impressive this season. HB's Johnson and Charles and the emergence of FB Tavon Jefferson have really allowed QB Matt Cassel so many options and weapons on the ground and in the air. And Coach Harbaugh has been especially good about really communicating a total team concept with the players, because when you scan the stats on either offense or defense, there really isn't one player that truly stands out week after week as being the only superstar on the field, we have multiple ways to attack and defend!
This Denver victory takes up to 8-1 on the season and, at the risk of repeating myself, every player and coach in the room absolutely feels we are full measure for each victory in that record. This is not a team that is breathing rarefied air and playing well above themselves, we simply feel we have all the pieces and are executing the game plan week after week!
Next week, we're again on the road with the Patriots!

From the desk of the General Manager
Kansas City Chiefs 2014
I'm pleased to announce the signing today of free agent CB Jeremiah Brown to a two-year contract, the terms of which I will not disclose at this time.
We have been looking for ways to tweak our game as we get into the later stages of this season and felt we wanted to wanted to gain a little more speed on our return team and, at the same time, use the returns to rest our secondary.
Until this time both Antoine Cason and Deveon Keys have been our primary returners. We felt they would be better served by strictly concentrating on their secondary duties wherever possible and leave the return duties to special teams.
Jeremiah brings a "98 RET" rating to our special teams and is on the practice field this week preparing for our week 11 encounter with the New England Patriots.

The bye week served us well. It allowed the team a chance to decompress for a bit and then re-focus on the task at hand, which is to get back out and play some football. Of course, it doesn't hurt when you travel to San Francisco in early November either.
We were simply firing on all cylinders this game. Again we scored in every quarter, were very productive on the ground controlling the pace of the game and had many defensive contributers as always. A great team effort.
If I had to pick one area on which we might want to focus a bit more attention, that might be our third downs again. We were 4-9, but I really felt we could have done better. Granted we were playing an opponent that came into the game with a 1-6 record against our 6-1, but you just cannot let yourself think about that and risk playing down to their level at any time.
Other than that point, this game was all K.C.!
* A footnote to this game. In the dying minutes San Francisco was able to take the ball down to the one yard line and with the clocking counting down each play, we were able to hold them four downs in a row at the 1 to preserve our lob-sided victory. I can't help but think that, at some point in a crucial future game, we'll be able to dig deep and reflect on those moments when it really matters!

After taking down both the Cardinals and the Seahawks, the guys were given some free time, knowing we had the bye week coming. But now we're back at it and focused on the second half of the season.
As I mentioned, there's a purposeful calm on and off the field heading to Week 9. The team feels good and looks good and they truly believe they should be exactly where they are today.

After dismantling the Cardinals in Week 6, we entertained the Seahawks in Week 7, with pretty much the result.
The luxury of having a ground game with the likes of Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles is that, when needed, you can simply grind things out along the ground, making first downs of course, and take an amazing amount of time off the clock. As you can see in the time of possession in the stats below, we dominated on the ground. That also has a by-product of opening up the passing game when we decide to hit the air and TE Kevin Leoni has been a big beneficiary of that over the past several weeks.
We have a record of 6-1 and unlike previous years, we're not really all that excited about that record. I'm enjoying the mood of the team right now, the methodical way we're going about our practices and certainly the way we're performing game days. It's like that old expression about acting like you've been here before and deserve to be having the success you're having. We plan to ride that as long as possible.
Bye week coming next week, so we'll take 6-1 into week 9 of the season atop the AFC West Division!

Needless to say this was a pretty lob-sided affair. We came out strong, shut down their running attack and minimized their passing attack and tossed points on the board every quarter. A good all-round victory that takes us to 5-1 on the season!
Not much more to say, other than we still have to keep working on our conversions on 3rd down. I think we have to be better if we're going to make any noise in the second half of the regular season. Our rushing game was decent today and allowed us to simply keep the ball a lot longer, which helps our defense and tires theres!

Kansas City Chiefs - 2014
With the trade deadline looming we considered a number of options to improve our team.
I would like to announce that The Chiefs have traded FB Ovie Mughelli and our 7th Pick in the up-coming 2015 draft to the Cincinnati Bengals for their 3rd, 4th and 5th Picks.
I would like to thank Ovie for some great years in Kansas City. Ovie was acquired in 2009 as one of the key players in a trade that sent veteran LOLB Mike Vrabel to the Atlanta Falcons. In fact that was one of my first moves as the new Chiefs GM and he has been a fixture in the backfield since that time.
When I was talking with the Bengals they expressed interest and needed a good FB. We simply felt that we had a lot of depth at the FB position with three on the roster and this trade gave up the most flexibility with which to build for the future. I wish Ovie nothing nut success in his new environment!
Certainly the moves we made last week on the depth chart, just prior to our Week 5 game, were very helpful in strengthening out defensive line. We also looked at ways to improve our MLB situation, but feel we have a real talent in MLB Walker, and are still getting excellent performance from MLB D.Johnson, so we didn't want to tinker for the sake of it and bring in someone who could very well be redundant this time next season.
We also looked at options of strengthening our O-Line, but again feel we have a couple of top young linemen in RT Burden and RT Waters and feel they will progress nicely the rest of this year and any weakness at that position will disappear by next season.
Other than that, I feel we are very strong and ready to go the distance in the AFC West and hopefully deep into the playoffs this year!

Once again we let the score get a bit out of hand, against a team I really thought we should have beaten soundly, and this time we simply unable to mount any sort of comeback.
The most telling stat is one that does not show up below in the game sheet. We were a pitiful 2-5 (40%) in the red zone this week and those two scores were merely field goals. You just do not get things done playing like that.
We've taken our lumps, the undefeated season is now in the rear view mirror and we can simply concentrate on winning football games week after week, looking no further than the next one!
Credit by the way to both DT Brick Walker and to new RE Shawne Merriman, who both had great games after being moved to their new positions in the practice week leading to this game.

Kansas City Chiefs - 2014
In an effort to bolster our defense, we have asked a couple of players to make some significant changes and have readjusted our depth chart as a result.
Effective immediately, we are moving ROLB Merriman to the RE position. Shawne had a decent, but not great year last season and as a result, was beaten to the ROLB position by ROLB Kolbe Anderson. It seemed a shame to have Shawne in a backup role, so we discussed matters and agreed that it might be a great move for both him and the team to see him play RE. That also helps his overall as it becomes "99"!
We're also going to make a move with RE Walker and put him in the other DT position, alongside DT Williams. Brick was also stagnating in the backup RE role, so we thought this best and feel, with his new "89" overall, it boosts our DT position nicely and he and Orien should make a formidable team alongside Shawne and Tyson Jackson!

The team is certainly being tested early, with the first game being against The Colts, who appeared in the Super Bowl last year, and now three in a row against AFC West rivals. I guess the schedule makers are trying to both test us and decide the division as early as possible this year (simply because it came down to the last game last season).
Once again we came away with a victory. And once again we seemed to have to fight tooth and nail to get it. I like to think that this continues to build character within the team, knowing that they are still in it until the last whistle.
By the way, a truly standout performance by ROLB Kolbe Anderson in this game was only overshadowed by the fact HB Chris Johnson was named the NFL Offensive Player of the Week. Both were definitely the best players on each side of the ball on the field this week!
We're 4-0 and face the 2-2 Rams week five in St. Louis.

We returned home to K.C. to face the San Diego Chargers and once again seemed to be playing catch-up most of the game. That said, I truly am proud of the fact that this season we seem to have a "never give up" and/or "we're always in it to the very end" kind of attitude.
We were decent, but not spectacular, in pretty well every area of our game and simply pushed our way to this win by scoring every chance we could get, eventually coming all the way back in the fourth quarter to win! We're 3-0 to start 2014.
