Never Play Football in Buffalo, in January!
This game started poorly for us and then got worse. And unfortunately it means our Super Bowl defense year comes to an end on a snow-covered, bitterly cold field in Buffalo as we exit after the Conference Final.
We kicked off, covered down field, but Johnnie Lee Higgins found a seam to the sideline and never looked back. After 98 yards he had the first six points on the board before some of the Buffalo faithful had even taken their seats.
After that, while we were able to put up some significant yardage in the air, Matt was picked 5 times through the game (two coming very late when it was all but over, but still...) and that sealed things for us.
To add insult to injury, we were also stopped early in the 4th, when their might have been a glimmer of comeback hope, by a holding call after taking it into the end zone for six. The resulting penalty took us back and with four downs we couldn't return to the end zone on that drive and came away with nothing.
Five turnovers...losing all five...and each one stopping significant gains...very painful way to end the year!
Full credit to the Buffalo Bills. They were ready for us, seemed to know the field better than we did, especially in the snow and ice and will be worthy AFC contenders in this years Super Bowl in two weeks!
We wish them the best of luck. We'll be following their progress that Sunday I'm sure and then we'll start evaluating where we are and where we need to be for the coming season!

Chiefs Silence the Raiders
A division rival in the Division Playoff. This season our record against the Raiders was 0-2. Game one, a 52-38 loss. Game two, in week 9, a 24-3 loss. Both times we were lit up by their young quarterback Kaven Duncan. The kid threw 319 yards and 2 touchdowns in the first game and 201 yards and another TD in the second game. This time out, plan one was keep tabs on him at ALL times!
When we first set out to take a serious run at the Super Bowl, we knew we had a decent QB in Matt, but we also knew that we simply had to afford him the time to be great and that starts with the O-Line. I think the Raiders are also working in that direction.
We hounded Duncan every step on the field. Both Tyson Jackson and Kolbe Anderson were able to catch him once each, but all day we were calling just the right plays to both exert pressure and keep him guessing.
Offensively, we took advantage of every opportunity and Matt found Profit and Jefferson for touchdown catches, utilized both Chris Johnson and Jamaal Charles and also found each of his wide out through the game.
As we have found out week after week, a total team victory works!
With this win, we are off to the Conference Playoffs.

The Air Show's in Town!
When we last met the Texans in week 13 there was also plenty of air under the ball most of the day. Both Schaub and Cassel lit it up. We were unsuccessful that day, which meant we were highly motivated this day!
The key to this game, never let up!
We put up 584 total yards in this one and they surpassed that.
We put up 327 passing yards and they surpassed that.
The running game...not so much! We owned that this week.
So once again it was a combination of tenacious offense and relentless defense and, frankly, I think we just wanted this one more because we know where we've been and want to get there again. Experience and pride go an awfully long way in football and I sincerely believe we exhibited a whole lot of both in Houston.
This win sets up a Divisional Final for us again this season. We'll just wait for the opponent!

The Chiefs - Pro-Bowlers!
From the desk of the General Manager
Kansas City Chiefs
I would sincerely like to congratulate three of our many outstanding football players on being voted to the Pro Bowl in the 2015 season.
While we have had more trying years in recent history, and the best possible year just this past season, 2015 was a very tough start that took a great deal of perseverance and dedication to overcome. And while each and every member of The Chiefs can take full credit and pride in our outstanding finish to this season and our recently announced Wild Card appearance against the Texans, three do stand out as Pro Bowlers.
QB Matt Cassel and CB Brandon Flowers are no strangers to the Pro Bowl with multiple past appearances, but we're all thrilled with the news that 28th Pick in the 5th Round of this past off-season's draft, C Sammy Sammatalle (Hawaii) was also named to the Pro Bowl! That is simply a credit to both our scouting team and the coaching staff and, of course, to Sammy for putting in the hard work as a backup Centre and backup at virtually every other offensive line position.
Congratulations on behalf of the entire Chiefs organization and, and I'll gladly take the liberty of speaking on their behalf this one time, on behalf of all Chiefs supporters!

While it has certainly been a difficult year, living up to the expectations of the Super Bowl Champions, and after starting the year of defense with an 0-4 record, I am very excited by the news that The Chiefs have earned a berth in the Wild Card week!
Finishing the year 10-2 after that dismal start proved good enough! In fact, the AFC West looked log-jammed after week 17 with the Raiders, Chargers and us all sitting with 10-6 records on the season.
We met the Texans in Week 13 and lost a close one 27-21. The boys are ready for a little pay-back, so this should be a great week of practice leading to the big game.

Happy New Year!
The Vikings came in 8-7 and were in a very similar position to our own. They needed to win! They did not.
This game was characterized by a stifling defense early and an offense that is now firing on all cylinders. After putting up "enough" points, then it simply reverted to the stifling defense. By the end of this game the Vikes truly were spent!
Cassel to McAlister. Cassel to Bowe. Johnson with a TD. and Tyson Jackson was a wrecking crew by himself, taking down 6 Vikes and Kline twice with sacks!
We finish our Super Bowl defense year with a pretty pedestrian 10-6 record. But while the record looks pretty bad, it should be noted that after our 0-4 start, we were actually a 10-2 squad, which IS a little more befitting a Super Bowl champion. I hope this is enough to vault us into the playoffs?

Not-so-Happy-Holidays BALTIMORE!
Crunch time!
We needed this one badly and we got it!
And frankly, most of this victory can be totally attributed to sheer willpower.
If you were to simply scan the stats box and try to determine who actually won the game without peeking at the score, my guess is that 99 out of 100 football fans would pick the Ravens. We were out-first-downed...out-third-downed...out yarded...even out-run on the ground, BUT we won this game!
A couple of things jump out. First, we did not turn the ball over at all this day and we took away 3 turnovers from the Ravens. That is deadly for them, a genuine deflating drive-stopper each and every time, no matter what stats they toss up. And second, once again Cassel to Johnson on the ground was highly effective, with Chris running for 3 TDs and Matt adding 2 more through the air.
9-6...Still not out of the woods yet. We need some good luck charms to line up in week 17 for a playoff berth, BUT our only focus is to do our part and beat the Vikings to make whatever else happens after that entirely possible!

Last of the Rivals!
Week 15...7-6...pretty much need to run the table to even have a sniff at the playoffs because we started so poorly. We have the Chargers (rival), Ravens and a home game to wrap up with the Vikings. This will not be easy!
First step was the Chargers in San Diego this week. If you recall, we also met in KC in week 10 and pulled one out of the fire to win by 3 in OT. This time around the guys promised me that they would not let it get to that point. The confidence and the assurance was inspiring. And, they delivered!
Matt was outstanding with a balanced air and ground attack, but I really think that it was Chris Johnson on offense that helped make this game very successful. He simply pounded away at the Chargers D-Line and Linebackers, eventually putting up 114 yards and also a couple of TDs. That, in turn, opened everything else up for us!
And with our defense really doing a job at limiting Philip Rivers progress almost every time he stepped on the field, it simply put their defense back on the field sooner for some more pounding. If we can take this into the playoffs, should we be fortunate to get there, I have every confidence this game plan would take us a long way and completely wipe the first half of the year from memory.
Simply an outstanding game to take up to 8-6 on the year, with two to go!

KC Mauls Bengals
Needless to say the first quarter was cause for concern, but a slightly different concern than last week. If you recall, last week we came out fast and then sat back expecting to win, but didn't! This week, we played a very tough Bengals team in the first and they put up 17 to our 7 and, with the added pressure of a 6-6 record, with little margin for error, we looked a bit tentative.
Coach Harbaugh did a great job of calming everyone down, simplifying things and just telling the guys to go out and play some hard-nosed football and to remember that your are still the champs! It worked.
We simply ran over the Bengals after that, or more to the point we passed them by! Cassel to Bowe twice and Mack, Black and Kimble once, with enough Chris Johnson thrown in to make the PA effective, was all it took. And a tiny bit of defensive help of course. Kudos to both Malik Frazier and Brandon Flowers who each picked one behind the relentless D-Line and Line-backing corps.
This was a great feeling victory and finally gives us a positive record - in WEEK 14!

Giddy-Up!
Unbelievably, for the third consecutive week, we took on a team with the identical record to our own. This time it was the visiting 6-5 Houston Texans.
For some reason we've always had trouble with the Texans and this game proved that theory again. We started very fast and, I think, got just a little too overconfident. We had won three in a row, we were up 14-0 and we were playing a team that usually challenged us. I think we let our foot off the pedal in the second quarter and they certainly took advantage.
We did have our moments. A crucial sack by Shawne Merriman, Anderson and Keys with interceptions and a pretty decent outing from Matt, tossing two touchdowns. But, it simply wasn't enough.
Unfortunately we drop to 6-6 and even if we run the table for the rest of the season, I am worried about our chances of making the post-season. And, let's face it, there's nothing worse that not making the playoffs after a Super Bowl year!!!
If nothing else, a lesson was learned today and the boys will be very, very ready for the Bengals in a weeks time!

Another Week, Another 500 Team!
Last week we met the Steelers with our identical 4-5 records and and took ours to 5-5. Oddly enough, this week we traveled to Detroit to play the 5-5 Lions.
Unlike last week, we were off and running with pretty much the first play from scrimmage. We took it to the Lions and were a bit surprised when they answer back each time in the first half.
By the time we got into the second half though, we seemed to have another gear and they simply didn't. All we needed was a touchdown after halftime and the game was ours. From that point, we let the defense take over and clean up!
Matt Cassel was outstanding, whether handing the ball to Chris Johnson 23 times for his 92 yards or tossing some big gains to Dwayne Bowe, for a 47 yard touchdown catch, or Leilon Black, for a 67 yard touchdown catch! In fact, I think the second one broke down any further resistance the Lions had in the 3rd quarter.
We're cruising with a 6-5 record now, the first time all year we've seen a positive!
Note to self: Remind me to never allow my team to ever start 0-4 again!

Steelers Visit
If you had asked me, when I spotted this game on the 2015 schedule, what the record of both The Chiefs and Steelers would be in week 11, I certainly don't think I would have guessed anywhere near our actual records currently! But that certainly doesn't diminish, in any way, the magnitude of this game.
The Steelers came in with the same 4-5 record we have, so it was vitally important for both of us to win because we're running out of time this season to even think about life after week 17.
This game was close and certainly had it's moments. A couple stand out. Matt Cassel running for a touchdown. I don't think I can recall his last one, but it was special and timely! Troy Polamalu intercepting a Cassel pass just when I thought we had the game in the bag...a sinking feeling! And, the best, seeing our former kicker Ryan Succop (who found a new home with the Steelers) playing offensive line (and doing a great job)!
* (Seriously...a bit of a quirk in the Madden 10 programming to have the kicker on the O-Line! First time I've seen it And, he was doing a heck of a job, which calls into question whether you need the 350-400 pounds to play that position?!?)
Our only real misstep in this game was waiting until the second half to actually get things in gear. After we found our groove, we took it to the Steelers. Thank goodness we didn't wait any longer!
We're now 5-5 with six weeks to go!

Chiefs need OT against Chargers
The middle part of our schedule is brutal, especially after such a slow start. Coming off of the Broncos, then the Pats, then the Raiders, it was next time for the Chargers. And because we're sitting at the bottom of the AFC West, we're looking up at all of our rivals. The Chargers came in 5-3 and we 3-5.
Matt Cassel got the job done. Philip Rivers looked better on the stats sheet at the end of the game, in terms of rating, but Matt put the points up on the board to allow us to win!
He also used almost all of his weapons, with the running game responding better than it has of late and the wide outs doing a heck of a job getting open down field. Leoni, Mack and McAlister, just to single out three, accounted for 19 catches and a TD.
We are edging our way to .500 football on the year, but like I said, it doesn't get any easier as we go. Up next, the Pittsburgh Steelers, another team struggling in 2015 with an identical 4-5 record. I hope we're coming out of our funk faster than the Steelers are there's!
