Chiefs Run Into QB Buzz saw
If the Pats were cause for concern last week, then the Oakland Raiders are even more so. First, they are division rivals and second, they had a 6-1 record coming into this one. Not to mention, their QB is one of the best young players at that position in the league today. Kaven Duncan gives us all we can handle each time we meet.
The defense certainly stepped up. We had great games from Merriman, Walker and Jackson, but we sputtered on offense (to be kind). As they say, you are not going to win many football games 3-0...and when you only manage a field goal, that's really your only option. We didn't win this one and didn't really ever look like we were in a position to.
Another bump in a trying season so far, taking us to 3-5 on the year.
So far Coach Harbaugh has played hard ball with the guys, we've made a couple of trades in order to both improve and shake up the mentality of the team and we've also taken a softer approach when we have indeed put a couple of points up in the standings. After this one, I think it might be time for a heart-to-heart from both Coach and GM. We're 9 games into the season and we simply have to start performing in order to salvage our pride. The team we just played is now 7-1 and our very best finished, if we ran the table rest of the way, would be 11-5 and I'm not sure that would even put us into the playoffs.
It's time to look inward and dig for something that will spark this entire team!

Weekend in New England - Productive!
After a very slow start we were looking cautiously at the 5-2 Patriots and wondering which Chiefs team would put in an appearance. I know the guys were very pumped after defeating the Broncos at home and we hoping the winning streak could be extended to even two games to build some momentum.
We came out on fire. Chris Johnson found his stride from the backfield and had a great game with 18 rushes producing 158 yards and a TD. On defense we were simply outstanding. Brandon Flowers pulled down two interceptions and took one back. Merriman and Jackson were a wrecking crew with 13 tackles between them. And Deveon Keys even returned a kick for a TD.
By the way, Brandon's performance was more than enough to have him named NFL Defensive Player of the Week! Congratulations.
Combined with a rather large number of penalties, I think the Pats were very frustrated. Sure we're the Super Bowl Champs, but they seemed to feel we were ripe for the picking. Not so!
Thats two in a row and a record of 3-4 now and we travel cross-country to Oakland for the next one!

Rivalry Repeated
After being somewhat dismantled by the Broncos in the first week of the regular season, we couldn't wait to get them on the field again. The chance came this week, week seven, and we took advantage!
Behind and outstanding game from Matt Cassel and great receptions from Leilon Black and Russ Mack, who caught 8 and 7 passes for a touchdown each, we were able to stay with the Broncos the entire game.
In OT the hero was certainly Brandon Flowers. Our entire defense was ready for this one, but Brandon was the guy who took one back on the Broncos and gave us the win!
Also clearly on top of his game was DE Tyson Jackson. As usual, Tyson was a machine with six tackles and a sack! That improves our season record to 2-4 and we certainly feel good about getting on a roll.

Chiefs Tame Da Bears
That's more like it. We found some run and were able to successfully move the ball against the Bears and came away with a much needed victory to halt the horrible start to the new season.
Matt Cassel was 15-19 for 177 yards and a touchdown, but it was the running game comeback, led by Chris Johnson of course, that made the dent required to take us to victory. Chris ran the ball, Dwayne Bowe caught 5, Kevin Leoni 4 and Leilon Black 2 with a touchdown, to lead us past the Bears.
I do hope this puts the losses behind us and we can continue to move in a much more positive direction in week 7.
Of note in this game, LT Jamarquis Taite will be out for the season with an undisclosed injury. We have both Lamel Waters and young Ed Reed ready to fill that huge hole on the O-Line.
And one final positive:
CB Deveon Keys was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week because of his two tackle, one forced fumble and one interception for a touchdown performance. Congratulations Deveon!

Bye Week, but certainly no picnic
We did have the bye this week, but instead of some R&R and down time before picking things up again to get ready for week six, Coach Harbaugh made the decision to quarantine the squad and revisit a training camp atmosphere. For five days this week the team went two-a-day and worked extremely hard to regain the confidence and the swagger that we had only a short time ago when things were going in the completely opposite direction.
Needless to say the tempers flared a few times during the week, but I think, deep down, everyone understood that starting 0-4 after winning the Super Bowl is no less than embarrassing.
We'll revert to a normal practice week this week, preparing for the Bears. Let's hope heads have cleared and we are able to peak for a mid-season turn-around!

Where did our Running Game Go?
After making the moves we made this past week and having inspired some spirited practice sessions, we again came out just short of completely flat and did not look good in front of the home town crowd. All you really have to do is take a look at the run statistic...all 2 yards of it! Four weeks in and we simply do not have a ground game.
The bright spots in this one we a couple of very nice passes, one to Shawn McAlister and the other to Russ Mack that produced long touchdowns early. But we were again never really in this game.
The dark side of this one came in the last two minutes of the opening half. Matt Cassel threw not one, but two picks returned for touchdowns by the Packers and this one was effectively over!
For most of the second half we gave some valuable game time to our second and third string units, which also allowed plenty of time for our starters to contemplate just what the heck is going on this year!

From the Desk of the General Manager
Kansas City Chiefs
I would like to announce a couple of moves that we have made today.
As you know, we are off to a 0-3 start this season, the season following one of the greatest we've ever had culminating in the Super Bowl! That is simply not the way to defend the NFL championship trophy.
One of the issues we have seen since the first pre-season game is a real problem developing the running attack this year. We felt we really needed to upgrade our offensive line and to do it now, not wait until we can draft and develop a player. In fact, we have several in the system and on the depth chart that we feel will fill that roll in the future, but we need help right now!
The Chiefs have moved veteran RE Glenn Dorsey and our #2 Draft Pick to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for veteran RT Charlie Johnson and the Colts #4 & #5 Picks.
We feel strongly that Charlie will give us more strength up-front and will help our running and passing protection and QB Matt Cassel in the process.
That move also made us just a little deep at the RT position, so we also traded RT Austin Burden and those same #4 & #5 Picks to the Detroit Lions in exchange for WR Clifton Kimble.
Clifton is a young up-and-comer and will give us some depth at wide receiver position and also give Matt another speedy and talented target.
Both gentlemen are on their way to our practice facility as we speak and I would expect Coach Harbaugh to utilize them both this weekend when The Packers come to town.

Shootout at the Arrowhead Corral
I'm pretty sure both teams did take the field for defense on occasion, but from the score, you would be hard-pressed to track down the defensive stats for this one.
Unfortunately with this loss, to yet another division rival, we drop to 0-3 and sit last in the AFC West.
I am really beginning to worry about the entire team. It seems like we haven't yet found our legs this year and we're three weeks in! We are the Super Bowl Champs and we simply are not acting like them!
In this game, Matt Cassel had a respectable outing, throwing for four touchdowns, but couldn't get the job done!
In this game our wide outs Bowe, Mack and McAlister all caught passes for touchdowns, but couldn't get the job done!
In this game we had 148 yards on the ground from Chris Johnson, but couldn't get the job done!
Coach Harbaugh and I talk on a daily basis now and we are both quite perplexed. The team seems to look good and respond well in practice, we show flashes of brilliance in games, but we don't yet have that killer instinct to take and hold a lead and put other teams away!
As I mentioned last week, we you look down the roster, this essentially is the championship team from earlier this year. I don't believe wholesale changes are in order, but trust me, we are scouring the depth chart and the stats to look for any weakness and will plug an holes we find...you can be assured!

Late game heroics called back!
This game cam down to a last minute penalty call. While it would be easy to blame the officials, frankly you should never put yourself in the position we found ourselves in with less than a minute on the clock.
It took most of the game to establish what little running attack we could generate and even then, we simply did not deliver. And while we had a decent second quarter, we seized up in the second half and simply could not generate anything on offense or defense.
The game came down to a kick-off with less than a minute to go. Down by eight, we returned a punt for a touchdown only to all turn, almost in unison and stare at the little orange flag that was thrown back down field. Holding negated what would have been a spectacular play and just may have changed the momentum for this game and our season.
As it stands now, the defending Super Bowl Champions are off to an 0-2 start and haven't really challenged yet in a game. And really, it's an odd feeling, because we are essentially the same line-up that had so much success only months ago.
Back to the drawing board, as they say, to see if we can work through this early season funk!

Rivalry Rekindled
Well, we started the regular season with a rivalry game. First week, first barometer of what lies ahead. I'm afraid to say that we did come out a little flat and although we settled down and put 21 up on the scoreboard, we were a bit overwhelmed at times by the Broncos.
Our rushing game appeared no match for the Bronco passing attack and we also turned the ball over twice early to allow them to put points on the board and force us to play almost continuous catch-up.
Round one, this season, to Denver! We start the year 0-1!

Pre-Season - Week #4
This was a great win for us and a superb way of ending the pre-season. We were able to keep pace with the Jets through the entire game and seemed to simply slug it out until there was one team standing - us!
Redeeming himself after the catastrophe that was last week, with the four missed field goal attempts, K Fitte was able to put one through the uprights with literally a last second on the clock for the win!

Pre-Season - Week #3
This was a game that never really was on track for us. It's hard to believe that you could play an entire game and simply not score a single point.
One of the biggest issues was that our new kicker missed four, yes four, field goal attempts. Needless to say, he will be spending a little extra time on the field during this next week as we prepare for the Jets.
Some bright spots did include Chris Johnson carrying 15 times for 47 yards and MLB Walker making 4 tackles. Other than that, let's just file this and move on!

Pre-Season - Week 2
If you quickly scan the stats sheets, you can easily see a couple of things that certainly tipped the balance of this game. We were quite solid, developed a little bit more in our running attack and aired it out a few times, but I truly believe Buffalo effectively shot themselves in the foot in the turnover department. We benefited greatly from their generosity and this game really was never in doubt.
Let's hope the first week was a blip and we're starting to hit a pre-season stride!

Pre-Season - Week #1
The pre-season is a time to transition from two-a-days to playing actual games against actual opponents. And it's also a time to work through as much of the line-up as possible to see what we exactly have for the ultimate season roster.
We certainly accomplished both in this first game of the new pre-season. Certainly we had a tough time establishing the run with both Chris and Jamaal taking cracks at trying to penetrate the 49er defense. I firmly believe the defense is always ahead of the curve this early. We'll get there!

Depth Chart - 2015
Because we are a veteran squad and because we are coming off one of the greatest years in the history of the franchise, I have every confidence that we will hold pretty true to the Depth Chart we have established going into the Pre-Season. Therefore, here is what the 2015 version of your Kansas City Chiefs will look like!
Now we just have to take this paper and put it on the field!
It should be a memorable year...
