KANATA, JAN. 2 - Since trading for Ekman-Larsson and Vermette, the Jets allowed only 7 goals in 5 games, even shutting out one of the league's top teams. Of course, the fact that James Reimer seems to have stepped his game up also contributes to this statistic, but no one can deny that Winnipeg is a better team after the trade, being the hottest of the league right now.
The last victim of this revamped squad were the Ottawa Senators. Even away from home, the Jets had no problem to defeat the Sens by the score of 4-1, scoring 3 goals already in the first period to put the game away

WINNIPEG, DEC. 31 - A powerplay goal scored by Stafford with 23 seconds on the clock denied James Reimer of his second straight shutout, but, anyway, the Jets didn't find any major difficulty to beat the Sabres at home in the last game of the year.
Antoine Vermette picked another two points and earned first star honors. He has 3 points in 4 games since arriving in Winnipeg.
As the new year begins, the team will already take on a short road trip, facing the Senators, Bruins and Penguins.

DENVER, DEC. 29 - James Reimer earned his third shutout of the season after the visiting Jets blanked the Colorado Avalanche, winning the game by the score of 3-0. With the result, Winnipeg reached 52 points in 41 games, surpassing the Avs, who have 51. The team's been playing like a true contender lately, even getting more constant flashes of elite goaltending from Reimer. Winnipeg will be a scary team come playoff time.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 27 - Jets' players seemed to be with their heads still in the holidays as the team was beaten by the lowly Wild at home. When the two goals from Minnesota's team happened, the Jets' blue liners were caught off position. Everyone on the team looked a bit lost on the rink.
On the bright side, Vermette scored his first goal as a Jet. And the team maintained its point streak, reaching 12 games now.

EDMONTON, DEC. 23 - The Winnipeg Jets' fans received an early Christmas gift as the team scored 4 unanswered goals to beat the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place.
It was the first game of Ekman-Larsson and Vermette in a Jets' jersey, but the two newly acquired players don't seemed to make an immediate impact on the defensive end as the Oilers quickly opened a 2-0 lead. However, Winnipeg managed to tie it up still on the first period (B. Wheeler tying goal came pratically at the buzzer).
This one was the fourth straight win for the Jets. After the Christmas break, they'll go back home to face the Wild.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 22 - Before the season started, the Winnipeg Jets made 3 trades in a row and the GM Kevin Cheveldayoff stated that this year would be a rebuilding one for the team.
Well, almost at the mid-season mark, it seems like he has changed his mind. Winnipeg has found a lot of success this season, but the team's defense has been lackluster all year. Combine it with the fact that James Reimer isn't an elite goalie…
And we have Winnipeg conceding lots of goals. Most important: lots of CHEAP goals.
The team had some "spare" players. Notoriously, Bryan Little. Little entered the season as the team's first line center, but a broken leg took him out of rotation for 10 weeks, allowing the rise of rookie Mark Scheifele, who developed an incredible chemistry with forwards Ladd and Wheeler.
Now, Scheifele is making a run for the Art Ross, meanwhile Wheeler is the frontrunner for winning the Maurice Richard.
"Bryan (Little) is an amazing player. But when he was taken down with that injury, we sort of learned to play without him. So why keep him here, in a role where he certainly wouldn't be happy, if we can address some of our other issues by sending him to another team where he can be more important than he is going to be here?"
The main question for Cheveldayoff was: which team? Little can provide an offense boost, so it should be a team in need of a first or, at max, second line center while having something good to give up, but on defense.
The answer came from the desert, where the now-former Winnipeg Jets’ been playing since 1996.
The Phoenix Coyotes has been struggling to find the back of the net for some years by now. Meanwhile, they have a talented defense with the likes of K. Yandle, M. Stone and O. Ekman-Larsson.
So it made sense: Phoenix would get a first liner, but one of the aforementioned defensemen would have to go to Winnipeg. Which one? Well, that seemed to be a problem.
Not for Cheveldayoff, as he had someone in mind: Oliver Ekman-Larsson.
The Swedish defenseman isn’t someone who you look for to strengthen your defense, since he’s more of an offensive defenseman. However, with him, the Jets should be allowed to move Zach Bogosian to the second pair and Jake Gardiner to the third, creating one of the most depth defenses on the NHL.
But the trade couldn’t work salary-wise. And that’s when Cheveldayoff made his magic.
He threw in the trade backup blue-liner Keaton Ellerby plus three good prospects with high potential, including a goalie from the CHL considered to be elite material some years from now (sorry I can’t remember their names and I don’t know where I can see it, but this goalie in special had a really high trade value, so I think his potential must be REALLY high too). The prospects, while giving Phoenix a good base for the future, had low salaries.
Therefore, he received in exchange Ekman-Larsson, C Antoine Vermette, backup G Thomas Greiss and backup C J. Halpern.
Some might consider this trade a steal, cause the Jets even managed to address another issue of theirs: the depth at center position. And they even did it by shipping a center.
Steal or not, one thing is for sure: The Jets are locked and loaded for the playoffs.
And few teams would want to cross their path.
Here is the trade:
Phoenix sends: D O. Ekman-Larsson, C A. Vermette, G T. Greiss and C J. Halpern.
Winnipeg sends: C Bryan Little, D K. Ellerby, 3 top prospects

VANCOUVER, DEC. 22 - It was a pretty even battle until H. Sedin opened the score in the second period. But again the Jets offense (notoriously the first line) came up big in the third to win it. Top scorer Blake Wheeler deked between two defenders to score a beauty, the go-ahead goal. Kesler managed to find the back on the net in the final seconds, but it was already too late as the Jets had already claimed another victory, their third straight, in Vancouver.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 20 - Back to home ice after defeating the Sabres at Buffalo, the Jets didn't disappoint their fans and scored in every period to beat the Panthers 6-3.
After a wild first period, Byfuglien scored in the second to make it a 4-1 game in favor of the home team, but in the third Florida tried to mount a comeback and almost completed it, but Blake Wheeler's two empty netters closed it all.

BUFFALO, DEC. 17 - Michal Neuvirth was doing an amazing job, blanking the Jets for 2 straight periods and leading the way for an 1-0 victory for the Sabres.
Then, the third period came.
Less than a minute in the third, Ladd deflected a shot to score a Shorty, his (league-leading) third this season. Then, the Jets totally dominated the Sabres, who are doing surprisingly well for a clearly rebuilding team, to win the game 3-1.

COLUMBUS, DEC. 16 - This isn't football, but turnovers can be equally deadly if they are on your own zone. Fact proved by the two unassisted goals, one for each team. They came after Comeau and Ladd caught the defense sleeping and stole the puck, being 1-on-1 with the goalie and scoring easily.
Apart from that, Bobrovsky did a great job between the pipes but couldn't prevent the Jets 2 goal rally to tie the game. Still, the Blue Jackets managed to pull ahead in the third with a powerplay goal, but the aforementioned Ladd's goal was an immediate response and the game went to the shootout since nobody could score in the overtime.
In the shootout, Van Riemsdyk started scoring, but Wheeler and Ladd were denied and the Blue Jackets won the game.
The Jets now have a 3-game losing streak, but their point streak extended to 7 games with this one.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 14 - The last placed Stars went on to Winnipeg to square off against the second placed Jets and it went the way you expected: Dallas won the game 3-2. Reimer once again was lackluster, allowing a really cheap goal by Erik Cole. Meanwhile, for the Stars, Lehtonen stopped lots of hard shots and was the main reason why the team from Texas left Canada with a win.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 12 - The last time the Colorado Avalanche came to Winnipeg to face the division rivals Jets, the home team opened a 3-0 lead just to see it fade and the visitors came out on top after the overtime, winning by the score of 4-3. This time, the Jets blew a lead again, although a much smaller one: the team scored first with M. Frolik but Duchene, one of the league two top goal scorers (now tied with B. Wheeler), scored one time to equalize the game and did it one more time after Wheeler pulled the Jets ahead again.
In the overtime, Parenteau scored his first of the game (and seventh of the season) to win the extra point for the Central division leaders Avalanche.

WINNIPEG, DEC. 10 - The Jets and Blues had already faced each other two times, with the St. Louis' team being victorious in both games. Moreover, both were high scoring battles with at least 7 goals each.
This time, everything went different as the game was defense-heavy. It almost looked like a soccer game and it seemed that both teams would walk into overtime scoreless, but Andrew Ladd finally managed to beat Ryan Miller, scoring a Shorthanded Goal (Note: we had a delayed penalty in our favor, but Ladd scored before it was called or even before Reimer left for the extra skater) with 21 seconds on the clock to give the Jets their first win against the Blues this season.
With another great game, blanking the high-flying Blues' offense, James Reimer earned first star honours for the game.

Blake Wheeler continues to pursue the Maurice Richard trophy with 18 goals this season.
Coming next for the Jets: a trip back home to face 3 division rivals: the Blues, the Avs and the Stars.
