20/21 Season Game 29 Colorado Avalanche @ Florida Panthers
The Avs continued their road trip out East, this time in South Florida against the Panthers. The Panters have been struggling as of late, losers of three straight. Both teams defensive players and goaltenders came to play tonight, as shots and scoring chances were limited throughout. Lots of sticks in passing lanes and tight checking kept the game scoreless through two periods, with neither goaltender forced to make many saves that weren't routine. Colorado finally got the breakthrough they needed midway through the 3rd period, Bellemare driving the net and scoring the kind of greasy goal you need to win a game like this. Francouz was solid in a shutout effort, making 22 saves and also grabbing an assist on the game's only goal. It was announced after the game that Cale Makar would miss a week due to a lower body injury. The Avs will conclude their road trip in Tampa.

20/21 Season Game 28 Colorado Avalanche @ Pittsburgh Penguins
The Avs continued their road trip in Pittsburgh, their second time seeing the Penguins in the span of a week. The first period started slow for the first few minutes, but quickly turned into a scoring frenzy. Rookie Martin Kaut opened the scoring with his 3rd goal of the season coming off the rush. The Penguins would answer back just a minute later when Zucker capitalized off of a bad Avalanche turnover in the neutral zone. Pittsburgh took the lead several minutes later on Brandon Tanev's 2nd goal of the season, coming off of another turnover by Colorado. Both of Tanev's goals this season have come against the Avs. Colorado would tie it late in the 1st on Landeskog's team leading 16th goal. With the score tied to start the 2nd, both teams fought hard and had to kill several penalties to keep the score tied. Looking to avoid another 3rd period blowout, Pittsburgh thoroughly outplayed Colorado in the final frame. Midway through the period, Rodrigues would beat Grubauer high glove side on a breakaway thanks to another sloppy Colorado neutral zone turnover. Mike Matheson would give Pittsburgh an insurance goal with under 5 minutes to play, and Crosby iced the win with a late empty netter.

20/21 Season Game 27 Colorado Avalanche @ Detroit Red Wings
Colorado traveled to Motown to face Detroit in the first of a four game road trip out East. What was once a heated rivalry has calmed down since NHL realignment moved Detroit to the Eastern Conference. The first period started slow without many shots or chances. Detroit got out to a first period lead when Mantha found the puck in the neutral zone as he was coming out of the penalty box, and fired past Grubauer from the slot. Colorado started to up the pressure in the middle frame, and tied the game when Nichushkin finished off a rebound from a Joonas Donskoi shot. The third period began tied but Colorado started to take control of the game. Midway through the third, Nazem Kadri scored on a breakaway to give the Avs their first lead of the game. Just over a minute later MacKinnon added a goal of his own to extend the lead. Brandon Saad added a late empty netter to seal Colorado's 20th win of the season.

20/21 Season Game 26 St. Louis Blues @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs squared off against St. Louis Monday night in the first matchup between the Central Division rivals this season. The first period was back and forth with the scoring chances evenly split between both teams. The Avs scored the lone goal of the period on Andre Burakovsky's 12th tally of the season. The Avs broke it open in the opening 4 minutes of the middle frame, Landeskog and Donskoi both getting on the board for an Avalanche team that is red hot offensively. The Blues would get one back late in the 2nd on a Jaden Schwartz goal, a nice shot from the high slot. Just like the other night against Pittsburgh, the Avs dominated the 3rd, scoring 3 more unanswered goals and chasing Binnington. The Blues added another late tally from Bozak for a final score of 6-2. Colorado heads out on a 4 game Eastern Conference road trip to start December.

20/21 Season Game 25 Pittsburgh Penguins @ Colorado Avalanche
Colorado welcomed Sidney Crosby and the struggling Penguins to Denver. The first period featured a lot of neutral zone play and few chances for either team. The Avs were able to grab a one goal lead on Nathan Mackinnon's 10th goal of the season, the 200th of his career. The Penguins notched up the pressure and enjoyed the majority of the scoring opportunities in the middle frame. The increased zone time culminated with Brandon Tanev tying the game at one apiece early into the middle frame. The Penguins continued to rack up the shots, but Avalanche backup Pavel Francouz was up to the task. The Avs restored their advantage later in the period on a Mikko Rantanen goal in front on a nice feed from Landeskog in the corner. The 3rd period began with the Avs leading 2-1 and from there it was all Colorado. The Avalanche exploded for 4 goals in the final frame and chased DeSmith. Colorado returns to the ice in two nights time to face off against St. Louis for the first time this season.

20/21 Season Game 24 Colorado Avalanche @ Nashville Predators
Colorado rode a 7 game winning streak into the Music City for another Central Division showdown against the Predators. This one started off much like the last game these teams played against eachother with tight checking and limited scoring opportunities. Former Avalanche Matt Duchene opened the scoring just over 7 minutes in with a wrister from the high slot into the top shelf. Colorado fought back to tie it in on a goal from rookie Martin Kaut created by a nice passing play after intense forechecking pressure from the 4th line. Colorado grabbed the lead in the last few minutes of the opening frame, a Gabriel Landeskog backhand to notch his league leading 14th goal of the season. The second period opened up with Colorado generating more pressure and getting the majority of shots on net, but a bad turnover at the offensive blue line led to a Mark Borowiecki breakaway for the tying goal. Colorado regained the lead with just 12 seconds remaining in the middle period when Nathan MacKinnon buried the rebound from an Ian Cole slapshot. Down by a goal in the 3rd, Nashville cranked up the pressure and heavily outshot Colorado. For most of the period all the Avs could manage was dumping the puck in to get fresh legs on the ice. The pressure would pay off for Nashville as a Borowiecki shot from the top of the circle hit two bodies and found its way to the back of the net for the tying goal. Less than a minute later, a Colorado turnover in their own end allowed Calle Jarnkrok to score the game winner with less than 3 minutes remaining in the game.

20/21 Season Game 23 Dallas Stars @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs returned home for a division matchup against the Dallas Stars. Colorado started slow, coming off a win against Arizona the night before. Dallas took the lead just over 6 minutes in on a goal from L'Esperance. The game was evenly matched with a lot of firewagon hockey up and down the ice. With just over 30 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Landeskog tied the game for Colorado just as time expired on their first of two powerplays on the night. The Avs got their legs back to start the 2nd period and took the lead just over a minute in on another Landeskog goal. They continued to apply pressure and extended their lead a couple of minutes later when Rantanen rushed up the right side of the ice and beat Bishop high glove side. Dallas would not go away, cutting the defecit to one with a Denis Gurianov goal. Colorado would get their two goal lead back with just under 5 minutes to play in the middle period, this time Burakovsky with the honors. The 3rd period started with the frantic back and forth pace. Colorado added a powerplay goal by Nazem Kadri to extend their lead to 3, and looked to tighten things up to ensure the win. The Stars continued to fight back though, cutting the defecit on a Joe Pavelski goal. Undisciplined play would then cost the Avs their lead, as they took two quick penalties handing the Stars a 5 on 3 man advantage. Radulov struck twice in 20 seconds on the powerplay to tie the game. With the score tied at five apiece in a game coaches and goalies hate, Donskoi beat Bishop 5 hole after a faceoff win in the offensive zone and Colorado escaped with a narrow 6-5 victory to extend the winning streak to seven games.

20/21 Season Game 22 Colorado Avalanche @ Arizona Coyotes
The Avs headed down to the desert for the final game of their three game road trip against Pacific Division opposition. Both teams came into the game playing well, winning seven of their last ten. The Coyotes would get on the board first with Conor Garland's 9th goal of the season. The Avs would tie it up less than 2 minutes later on rookie Martin Kaut's 1st of the season after some hard forechecking play by Nichushkin. The deadlock would last only 28 seconds though, with veteran Alex Goligoski restoring Arizona's 1 goal advantage. From the start of the second period on, the Avalanche owned the puck. They bombarded Antti Raanta throughout the rest of the game. Just over 3 minutes into the middle frame the Avs tied the game again on an Andre Burakovsky deflection of Michael Stone's point shot. Despite a heavy shot advantage in favor of Colorado the game was still tied after two. The Avs continued to throw everything at Raanta, and finally took the lead in the game with Bellemare's 5th goal of the season coming off a faceoff play in the offensive zone. The Avs were able to see out the narrow victory, extending their winning streak to six. The Avs return home tomorrow night to face division rival Dallas.

20/21 Season Game 21 Colorado Avalanche @ Los Angeles Kings
The Avs headed to Hollywood for a Saturday showdown against the LA Kings. They started fast once again, scoring twice in the opening 3:32 of the 1st period. Andre Burakovsky broke the ice on the powerplay, ending a long streak of powerplay futility. Less than a minute later Rantanen beat Quick with a wrist shot through net front traffic. It would only get worse for the Kings when MacKinnon added a 3rd goal for Colorado, an incredible batted goal on the powerplay. The Kings would fight back, getting one back late in the 1st on a Jeff Carter breakaway. The game slowed down in the middle frame, however Colorado regained their three goal lead on Rantanen's 2nd of the night, his 10th of the season. The final frame continued at the slow pace established in the 2nd. The Kings grabbed a late goal from Dustin Brown. LA applied some late game pressure with Quick pulled for an extra attacker, but Colorado was able to see out the 4-2 win, their 5th straight.

20/21 Season Game 20 Colorado Avalanche @ Anaheim Ducks
The Avs began a three game Pacific Division road trip in Orange County against a surprising Ducks team that led the NHL in points going into the game. It was a nightmare start for the usually excellent John Gibson. The Avs absolutely shelled him, scoring 4 goals in the opening 7 minutes of the game. Bellemare struck first, driving the net to finish a pass from Alex Galchenyuk. Galchenyuk, signed for bottom 6 depth in the offseason, has flourished since being put on the 2nd line with Kadri and Burakovsky. Rantanen doubled the lead just over a minute later with a nice move to beat Gibson stick side. MacKinnon added the third goal on a deflection of a Sam Girard wrist shot. It was announced after the game that Girard sustained a foot injury and will miss a few games. Compher rounded out the scoring by beating Gibson from close range for his first goal of the season. The Avs played it safe by dumping the puck in and forechecking for the rest of the game, but Anaheim got on the board in the 3rd period when Sam Steel took advantage of a bad Devon Toews turnover.

20/21 Season Game 19 Washington Capitals @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avlanche welcomed the Washington Capitals to Denver in a matchup between two of the league's best teams in the early going of the season. The game had the type of intensity you would expect from two playoff contenders. It was all Washington in the first period, as they outskated the Avs to a 1-0 lead. Grubauer failed to track a loose puck in front as Kuznetsov put it past the former Capitals goalie. Starting the middle frame down by 1, the Avs picked up the pace and tied the game via a Galchenyuk goal resulting from their trademark forecheck pressure. Continuing to gain momentum, the Avs took the lead late in the 2nd period on a Bellemare breakaway goal. The Capitals stormed back in the 3rd. Backstrom showed off his smooth hands as he controlled the puck in close and beat Grubauer to tie it. With the game tied, the Capitals took a penalty to put the Avs on the powerplay. The Avs couldn't convert with the man advantage, despite good puck movement and several shots on Lundqvist. However the Avs were still putting pressure on as the penalty expired and Rantanen snuck one past the Swedish veteran to put the Avs in front. The Capitals would keep fighting, and tied the game again with just over 5 minutes remaining to play. It wouldn't be enough though, when less than a minute after the tying goal Makar skated the puck out of his own zone and found Landeskog streaking through the neutral zone. The red hot Avalanche captain beat his compatriot glove side for the game winner.

20/21 Season Game 18 Boston Bruins @ Colorado Avalanche
The Avs welcomed Original Six opponent Boston to the Ball Arena ice, in a high scoring game that both goalies would like to forget. The Avs scored on their first shot of the game, thanks to the first of two goals from Landeskog. The Avs continued their trend of taking an early penalty, but backup netminder Francouz kept the Bruins off the board during their powerplay with a series of stellar saves. After weathering the storm on the PK the Avs doubled their lead on a Rantanen goal, the Avs second shot on Rask. The Bruins would get a goal back before the end of the opening frame thanks to star winger David Pastrnak. The Bruins upped the pressure in the second period and got a golden opportunity when JT Compher was assessed a game misconduct penalty for boarding. The Avs penalty kill did a fine job killing off the long powerplay, but the momentum stayed in Boston's favor as they scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later the Avs would answer right back to tie the game at 3 on Joonas Donskoi's 5th goal of the season. The 3rd period kept up the frantic back and forth pace, and Colorado capitalized on aggressive play by the Bruins to score the game winner, Landeskog's second of the night.

20/21 Season Game 17 Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers
Colorado headed to Edmonton in the midst of a 3 game skid, looking to turn their fortunes around. They started the night quickly by scoring just over 3 minutes in on the first shot of the game. Bellemare charged through the neutral zone on a two man rush with Galchenyuk who finished the play past Koskinen. Less than a minute later the Oilers tied it up by capitalizing on another Colorado penalty early in the game, with Chiasson burying the powerplay goal. The Avs owned the puck all night, as evident in the shot totals. Most of their puck possession was generated by a tenacious forecheck, which led to their second goal. Landeskog won't get an assist on the play but he knocked the puck loose for Brandon Saad after a nice open ice hit on Chiasson. Saad made no mistake from the low slot, giving the Avs a 2-1 lead. Colorado continued to dominate puck possession into the 2nd. Late in the period the Avs found themselves on another odd man rush, this time MacKinnon doing the damage. The 3rd period was much the same, and Landeskog added a 4th goal for Colorado after nice forechecking from MacKinnon.

20/21 Season Game 16 Colorado Avalanche @ Winnipeg Jets
Having lost 2 straight, the Avs traveled North to Winnipeg for another division game against the Jets. Colorado found themselves down less than two minutes into the game when Nikolaj Ehlers sniped a powerplay goal after a Landeskog penalty. Just over 2 minutes later the Jets doubled their lead thanks to former Av Paul Stastny. Down by 2 less than 4 minutes into the game, Colorado knew they had a mountain to climb trying to beat Hellebuyck when his team gave him an early lead. The Avs threw everything at the net and finally capitalized late in the 1st on a Mikko Rantanen goal from his own rebound. The Avs kept chasing the game in the 2nd and were able to tie it late in the fram on another Rantanen goal. Starting the 3rd period tied, the game tightened up along with the refs. Winnipeg was able to take advantage of the extra ice in a 4 on 4 situation when Blake Wheeler beat Grubauer on a breakaway. Hellebuyck would shut the door the rest of the way, handing the Avs their third straight loss.
