NBA Live 13 Preview

I recently got the chance to see NBA Live 13 in action and while the results weren't the greatest to be sure, there were some helpful tidbits of information you could gather from my initial viewing. The NBA Live 13 team showed us an early pre-alpha version of the game, which according to the Developers,  was 60% complete -- so it was a quite early version of the game which probably won't represent the final product, at least that's the theory I'm working with for now.

The main focus behind NBA Live 13 are three key building blocks which the entire game is being built around for the future: gameplay, presentation, and online.

NBA Live 13 is trying to give the user as much control as possible, with the ability to break out of any animation at any time. The team showed off a triple threat animation and a pass out of a jumper, but it wasn't anything jaw dropping to be sure. Actually, the dunks didn't look bad, but the speed of the moves and the players seemed too fast to me (more on that later).

In the post game, offensive and defensive players are independent of each other, so you will see a variety of animations down low between both players. I wish they would have showed some better examples. Instead, they showed a couple of post game moves with Durant guarding LeBron in the paint. They both banged a little and Bron branched out of it and shot a turnaround jump shot.

The animations looked robotic and not very good at all in the demo. While the overall graphics package looks pretty solid sans-animations, if the animations aren't there then the whole package falls apart quickly. It's entirely possible that this is due to the early build of the game, but what we were shown wasn't up to snuff to be sure.

In the next example, 'Bron does a drop step and the users controller starts to rumble, depending on how hard Durant is trying to push Bron away from the bucket. The controller actually rumbles more if the contact becomes more physical. When timed right, the user will be able to get the drop step and get to the rim. This animation looked a little better and the fingers actually wrapped around the rim on the dunk. Still, nothing really mind blowing here but it is what it is.

While the team showed the offensive moves, they didn't show how the defense can actually defend it. It seemed more offensive friendly, but they did say the defense has a counter for every offensive move and vice versa. Just found it strange, they didn't show any examples of it. Perhaps that is coming later?

Another new feature in Live 13 is a new partnership between EA Sports and Synergy, the official data provider to the NBA. They track all player moves and shots in a database and gives EA access to that database. The AI plays to those strengths and weaknesses, but will also learn from experiences in the game.

They showed some real life footage between the Bulls and Hornets. The footage showed how a certain play the Bulls ran, had a second option if a team defended the first, and the team tended to indicate this dynamic and realistic play depth would make it's way into the game in some form. I found it odd that they showed real life footage, instead of showing it in the game which may indicate the feature isn't fully finished just yet. The Live 13 guys claim they have the tech to make it happen, but that is about as far as they talked about it at this juncture.

ESPN is integrated with the game, so the graphics and transitions are ESPN broadcast quality. When showing the players and teams warm up, it uses the same camera angles ESPN uses during an actual game, and it will be different, depending on arena. Mo-caps were used during pre-game, substitutions, halftime and postgame routines.

Player authenticity was important to the team, as they actually spent a lot of time on each player's likeness. All player accessories have been included, as well as signature emotions from some of the top athletes, however no names were given as to which players got the extra treatment.

Online gaming is another one of the building blocks mentioned by the team and is being treated as very important. NBA LIve 13 will rely on the EA servers to keep everything going smoothly with the plan to keep user experiences fresh with new updates all season long.

Jeff Van Gundy and Mike Breen lead the way with their commentary in the game. While it was difficult to hear, because of some audio issues with the build we were shown, from what I did hear, it seemed fine, at least during the intros. During gameplay, the volume was turned down and I couldn't really hear anything.

During the gameplay, I noticed no off the ball player movement. I mean none. But the Developers stated they simply wanted to show off the passing, so plays were not being run. Another head scratcher to me as this made the game look a little ridiculous. They showed a signature shot from LeBron James, but it didn't look very natural to me at all. In fact, many of the animations seemed to skip frames, it just wasn't fluid. While zooming into player heads, facial hair and tattoos looked great, the gameplay was simply just not worth showing at this time. It's possible/likely this will be cleaned up before launch, but it's worth noting we simply weren't shown much to impress us on the gameplay just yet.

The game seemed too fast. Actually, it looked more arcady to me than sim. Players moved too fast and the developers stated there were no plans at this time to add a speed slider. That is not a good sign for sure. They are implementing a collision system, but they didn't show it at all. It almost seemed like they were more interested in showing off the graphics than actual gameplay.  I came away disappointed as Live 13 was actually my most anticipated game to see coming into E3. The team admitted there were some bugs within the build they displayed, but also claim the foundation has been set and the bugs we saw will be fixed.

Hopefully I get to see a more recent build in the coming months to get a more accurate preview. For now I just have to call it how I see it and the game simply wasn't ready for prime time in my initial viewing. We'll see how it shapes up in the coming months.

I hope I'm wrong but I feel that the build Mr.Noah saw was even worse and simply he was shocked from what he saw.I fear that EA is heading towards another cancellation of their bball videogame..

What's good family. We will be talking about this review on friday if you want to join in the conversation. I have not had hands on with this yet for the person who asked.

One thing to keep in mind is that with their ANT system they can make changes really fast. This early in a dev cycle they could have huge chunks of the game that just weren't ready to show. So that COULD combine to make things seem a lot worse than it is.

For certain they should be ahead of where they are. Meaning all pieces should be able to be inserted in the game for basic gameplay to look passable in June. However with the tech they are using and only being 60% they game could possible look much better than it does.

HOWEVER this is EA and there is no telling if they have the time to put in 40% if their changes. So I am in the wait and see camp.

Unfortunately for EA we have heard this all before even right up into the cancellation of their last game.

Only time will tell if they got caught showing too early or If in fact the writing is on the wall.

This game will seal the ultimate end of the "NBA Live" series. I'm almost 100% sure about that...

I think the writing is on the wall Czar. this whole process is the exact same thing we've gone through with Delete 13 to a tee. Devs showing what they wanna show... Talking about spending hundreds of hours of head modeling, someone they know playing NCAA ball etc. It wouldnt surprise me to see this game get canned for good, because theyve want to give us their vision and not what us gamers have been asking for..

I think both the NBA Live & NBA 2K teams released their info on their games too early at E3 from a pre-alpha build standpoint & that they should have waited until the games were more polished. I'm still hopefull since these NBA Live 13 screenshots that been revealed are not even on the ea sports nba live website so they may not be final. People are letdown from both games by what they saw from E3 that was pre-alpha I think we should wait until the upcoming months to make judgements.

You had to know it was a bad sign that they had shown so little of the game so far, this late in the process. I've been checking EA's website periodically hoping for a feature list or some screens, videos, whatever, and up until about a week ago they literally had no mention of NBA Live anywhere on their site.

Ugh, between this unflattering review and the disappointingly familiar looking gameplay vids I saw of 2k13, this may be the first year in as long as I remember that I haven't bought an NBA game. Step it up boys, c'mon!

One thing I can say is last yr when 2K presented NBA 2K12 w/ Kobe playing on stage it didn't look all that hot, but the finished product looked at lot better.......Save for the glitches, lockout. rookies, etc. LOL!!!! This yrs basketball video game experience is gonna be straight. Don't get too caught up in the early previews. They aren't gonna show you everything right now. They have these E3 Demos ready for show early on. So its not gonna be what the game is like. Now I don't know what Live will be like, but I know this much. It will be better than Elite 11.

Both companies said they're bugs & they early builds presented at E3 & they will be addressed before the game ships so i'm not too worried right now.

Keep these in mind
I'm with you man, I really want it to be good, and just something new and refreshing more than anything. 2k has been pretty epic the last few years, despite some obvious flaws, but it's just time for something else, in my opinion. I always loved Live b/c of the dribble controls and what I felt were more accurate player tendencies than 2k (default rosters at least). That being said, this wouldn't be the first time that a developer had told me a million awesome things about a game and then delivered a sub par product.

There just seems to be a discrepancy between some of the details of this review and some of the things advertised, and 4 months isn't a ton of time for ironing out kinks. I was hoping for the first couple of hands-on previews I read to be much more positive than this one. That's all I'm saying, we all want a great game here with all the time they've had to put into it.

Madden already had a foundation to build on.

EA was talking about this ANT technology before Elite came out. They even showed us videos of them working with the ANT.

I'm at the point where I'll believe it when I see it. Until then...I fully expect the worst especially when Steve has saw it firsthand and wouldn't sit here and just talk it up just to hype it.

If it turns out in the end to be a playable game...I'll feel otherwise.

Word from EA is that the #NBALIVE13 build at E3 will not represent the final product. Take that for what it's worth, more previews to come.

I found out that they didn't even start development till a year ago or so, so they might not of even had a full year.

Ya I'm sure the guys puting in a whole bunch of hours programming Live could careless if there game is getting negative feedback, come on be real right now. I don't think EA as a company wants another failed attempt at a basketball game.

How you have two years off and still talking about you working on this and that and your a few months away from launch. I am not as upset at Live 13 as I am at 2k13. Live is done in my opinion until they prove me wrong, But I don't think that they will ever get it right. Just like Madden, Madden is going to have to really bring it this year for them to get me back I have been done for four years with Madden. But anyway both Live 13 and 2K13 are looking like huge disappointments. In my honest opinion from these pictures of Live 13, it looks like the same game from previous years.

Maybe I am thinking about bad memories of how I hate the player models in Live and I hate the way the shoes look on the court the way the players look HUNCHED over all the time like they are stuck in a defensive position, everyone is built the same in that game you cant tell the difference between a skinny and bony Stephen Curry from a Chris Paul? Not to mention the way the ball is so big; why is the ball so big?? It doesn't look right. I have always disliked the ball animation and the way it is shot and the way it goes in the rim etc.... Those are the worst animations I have ever seen compared to 2K. Speaking of 2K, that gameplay interview at E3 for 2K13 was a huge disappointment. I recorded it on my DVR so I wouldn't miss it and I felt leaving away from it a little manipulated... I don't know why I always get shocked because it happens all the time every year... I should learn by now. That game looks the same just a little touched up to trick the consumer into thinking it is going to be a different game, when in fact its not. As a matter of fact I know it will be the same game with a little tuning because Jason Argent said it himself; " It will be more of the same". He even went as far as saying that that is what the fans/consumers want. (Scratching my head). The same, i don't think I want to pay $65 dollars for the same game?! Who is this guy John McCain?

That gameplay is still going to come up short again and it will be a boring game after about a month into it once again. Especially because you have to download the All-Star weekend which shouldn't be a thank you to the fans because it is long over due; but something already built into the game back in 2k1!!!???? Why do I have to leave my Association mode just to play some downloaded content that should be implemented into dynasty/association mode to make it more fun and authentic??!

Man I am bout to be done with these disappointing basketball games from dumb and goofy looking player animations and dribble moves, to dumb cheating AI when you play on higher difficulty, to boring commentary that acts like a player or team is not dominating because they are not responsive to it at all; neither the fans in the audience for that matter, including playoff atmosphere, By the way, they promised Playoff atmosphere, presentation and audience was true to the game last year... I could go on and on but it is a waste of breath...

All I know is 2K and Live will impress me when after a few weeks of playing the game if I don't have to adjust sliders to make it true to the game of authentic basketball then they did what they needed to do. But if I have to look here to these forums or Youtube to find somebody who adjusted sliders that will make the gameplay closer to authentic basketball or make the Ai a tad bit more competitive, then count 2K13 a failure and a disappointment..

The consumer shouldn't even have to do that to make the game fun in the first place... HAHAHAHAHA! That's how you know that these hyped up basketball games is wack man... Adjusting sliders???? I cannot count how many times I fell asleep while playing 2K11 and 2k12 after about a month into it. Is it just me??? Last but not least can somebody answer me why Kevin Durant and Serge Ibaka look just alike in the game as far as player models??????? What is that???!!!! I cant even figure out who to guard because they look the same if you don't see the number on the Jersey. I play on Broadcast most of the time but even on 2K view they look the same?? Kevin Durant is Long and wiry he isn't swole or ripped and he looks short in the game. They need to fix that. Kobe Bryant as well. Holler at me when Kobe Bryants legs look close to toothpicks with his calf muscles barely bulging out. Why does Kobe look solid and short in the game?

I just feel like the player models are not good. Graphics good but not authentic. I feel like they got these player models bad and I don't know why but it seems like one year they got the player models straight and authentic then they changed it. Just like they do with other features that they take out the game one year when it worked that year and two builds later bring it back and call it a new feature?? HAHAHAHAHA!! Talk about mind games and manipulation of the consumer man..

# 140 simbayless @ 06/06/12 02:37 PM
This what gets irritating, every time EA gets a new team the first thing they say is they dream and sleep the sport or use to play it ect...then when the final product comes out you would think amateurs made this game that never even heard of the sport Ian was a big example of this when he said the whole team is very passionate ect lol you never here the other company talk to much about how one of them use to play the sport more then actually talking about the product but I will give the new madden team big props they talk less and work harder and it shows
