NBA Playgrounds Releases on May 9 For $20, New Details & Gameplay Video

NBA Playgrounds is scheduled to release on May 9 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and Windows PC for $20. Polygon has posted quite a few new details about the game, some of them we've listed below. Be sure to read the full article here.
  • Over 300 different dunks
  • Lottery Pick meter gives the user a random special ability for a limited time
  • Can be played by four people in the same room
  • Online 2-player head to head will be available at launch, 4-player update coming soon after launch
  • Post-release roster updates
  • Progression mechanic unlocks the entire roster gradually
  • Packs unlock players, each pack contains 5 players, you start off with 3 packs. THERE ARE NO MICROTRANSACTIONS!
  • Dunk contest and a three-point contest are scheduled to release at a later date
  • Charles Barkley and Kobe Bryant will NOT be on the roster

Can you have two player co-op on the main challenge/campaign modes like the last EA NBA Jam game, or is that single player only? This will decide whether I buy the game or not.

Yeah it's all. And on Switch there is no online play at all yet.

That's right. No way to play against friends, just strictly matchmaking right now. Also, limited to two players if I read correctly. Both are supposed to come with a post-release patch. No online play on Switch until post-release patch too.

It oozes nostalgia! For 20 bucks it's worth it!

Any advice on shooting and layups? Is there something I am supposed to look for in the animation to know when to release the shot button..

Do individual players have different release points?

What an unexpected treat this game is! I'm having a ball with this one. I unlocked Kyrie and DeAndre in my first pack and have been running with them mostly. Good stuff, worth the $20.

FYI, you have to unlock the ability to play online. It just opened up for me after running an exhibition and tournament game. Hopefully friends matchmaking gets sorted out.

Also, on the PS4: multiplayer is locked. Is it launching later?

The 3pt point timing is very early compared to 2k. Try to shoot it early but not too early.

Same with the layups and dunks but just a little bit earlier

So I finally got the game and I'm glad to say that the steals are a lot different in the final game.

They take a good chunk of stamina and they pretty much can't be spammed anymore 😃👌

Finally got my first match in and had some fun.

I like that you have to time both shots and dunks to make em, which can result in some fine highlights.

Got Kyrie and Ewing to play together on my first pack opening, and an upgraded Vince/Memphis after the win.

Love the amount of choices, can't wait to see what the upgrades do.
