Harold Reynolds has to be one of my favorite baseball commentators of all time! Something about his voice is just so unique and he knows what he's talking about. I remember when he was featured in a few tutorial/feature videos in the early days of MVP Baseball

You wouldn't want the tape measure to say you hit a 575 foot HR when it scraped the wall, so why would you settle for this fake data?
  • Exhibit A: Andrus "sprinting" home at 18.42 MPH in the clip. Andrus is capable of hitting 20.9 MPH as per the screenshot below. A-Rod is capable of reaching 19 MPH, having been measured as fast as 20 MPH in 2015.

  • Exhibit B: Justin Turner hits what is probably the farthest HR in MLB history. Exit Velo of 118.3 with a launch angle of 33.1?! For context, Kris Bryant hit a 495 foot bomb, the farthest HR of 2015, with a nearly identical launch angle. He only hit it 111.1 MPH. There have been two home runs in statcast HISTORY hit harder than that... both by Stanton. Both were at a launch angle below 25 degrees. The home run in the video is probably 525 feet plus based on "similar" home runs (which basically do not exist)

  • Exhibit C: Troy Tulowitzki guns out a runner with an absolute laser to first. Love the animation, but 78 mph is a farce. Khris Davis, the fielder with literally the worst arm in the game, averages 78 MPH on competitive outfield throws. That throw is basically as hard as any I've ever seen in a baseball video game, and they're saying it's only 78 MPH. Per a Mike Petriello article from earlier this month, here are the 5 worst OF arms in baseball, measured by the top 5% of these outfielders throws from 2016.

Some thoughts about this post...

1. It's good to point this stuff out and I'm sure there will be some growing pains for adding these to the OSDs.

2. Variation. Just because Andrus hit 20.9 mph once going from home to 3B doesn't mean he'll hit that same speed in every game and situation. Going between different bases could be different. In general, it's not totally convincing comparing a one-off vs another one-off if you want to draw a larger conclusion.

3. As for throwing speeds...whether it's an INF or OF throw matters. You're comparing an OF with his feet set and momentum coming toward the INF to Tulo going into the hole and throwing as he leaps away from 1B off his back foot.

4. For homers, the wind and atmospheric conditions matter also. The launch angle and exit velocity are not the only parameters governing distance. I'd also suggest that sliders will probably need to be tuned anyhow, so the Statcast parameters might change depending on what settings you have on.

The difference between 20.9 MPH and 18.5 MPH is massive. If you want variation, why not make Billy Butler run 22 mph? You cannot concede to the idea that it is okay for A-Rod to have a faster 3rd to home top speed than Elvis Andrus going 2nd to home. That is asking for disaster.

That is not what a 78 mph throw looks like.

Of course wind and atmopshere matters, but that home run is unparallered based on two years of hard data. Again, only two home runs in the statcast era have ever been hit that hard WITH wind and atmospheric conditions accounted for. None were at that launch angle. Both were Stanton, and about 10 degrees lower. I'm not buying it.

#notmybroadcaster, haha just joking, i like the addition of Harold Reynolds. This MLB network package is a game changer. I've been wanting an authentic broadcast package for years with the show, especially since many sports games are doing it now.

The fact that Russell and the SCEA team heard what people on this board have asked for over the years and keep improving it, says a great deal about the product they make! I for one am completely happy with the commentary and presentation this year. Thank you SCEA, you guys are amazing!!

I don't think I've ever heard Harold Reynolds, so I will withhold judgment until the game arrives.

That said...wow, BA2929, please tell me you're joking.

If it was Joe Buck, THAT could be a deal-breaker. But him? He can't be THAT bad.

What's the big deal about Reynolds? I don't watch MLB a lot so I wouldn't know

Oh he's much worse than Joe Buck. Just look into why he is no longer with ESPN. As far as his "talent," Reynolds is even worse than Michael Kay if you can believe that. I'll buy this game second hand if there is an option to turn his volume off. I'm not sending a nickel his way.

Just chiming in to say "Bravo SDS!"

He enjoys harassing women at the workplace. Also, his commentary consists of yelling (i.e. pop fouls have the same inflection as WS Game 7 walk-off home runs). Like Joe Buck and Michael Kay, they haven't figured out that people are tuning in for the game and not them.

can you use mlb network presentation in online rated games?

# 133 kehlis @ 02/27/17 11:30 PM
This site is better than picking apart a persons opinion about why they don't want to buy the game. It may seem like a silly reason to some but can we at least not resort to blatantly trolling the guy for his opinion?

At the very least, hit speed (the MPH display we were given last year in swing analysis) is definitely influenced by the power slider. So I'd imagine the other elements of statcast readings can change as well.

I haven't read through all comments but i really wish we didnt nitpick and appreciate how far this series has come. Lets appreciate what we'll have once we take the plastic off of this game. The trailers have looked amazing.

Im making the jump from 2015 so this will be a breath of fresh air.

No reason I can't appreciate be greatness we are about to get our hands on AND be a perfectionist when it comes to the minutiae.

My goal is to highlight the little things that I think could use work. What gets fixed? That is ultimately the Dev Team's call. There are only so many hours in a year, so not everything can be perfect. Doesn't mean we can't highlight things we think could use work.

I guess I'm in the minority when I say I'm sort of looking forward to having Harold Reynolds in the announcing crew plus it will be a breath of fresh air with Plesac as well. Guess I'm just nostalgic since I grew up playing MVP Baseball 2002. Now I'm just excited for the new features in franchise mode and improving the player morale system SCEA developed for the first time last year.

***Pre-March 28th To Do List***
  1. Upgrade to PS4 Pro (GameStop quoting $125 credit with trade in)
  2. Upgrade from 1080p to 4k TV

I was going to do the same but unfortunately the ministry of war at my home does not agree with me.

I wouldn't say you're in the minority. Seems there are only a handful of people in this thread who are anti-Harold. Most people seem positive about ol' Harry (myself included).
