MLB The Show 17 News Post

Game Informer has just posted their interview with MLB The Show 17 game designer, Ramone Russell, giving us 48 more details about the game, including Diamond Dynasty, smarter A.I. (as well as more less-than-perfect-but-realistic), new ball physics, the importance of animations, and much more.

They have also included a couple of screenshots showing off the faces of Max Scherzer and Anthony Rizzo from MLB The Show 16 vs. MLB The Show 17.

We have listed some of the details below. Make sure to read the full article here and post your thoughts.
  • The game has over 1,000 new gameplay animations, including non-perfect/mistake animations, which the game didn't have in the past.
  • Russell estimates that there are somewhere between 25-50 new home run swings.
  • Uniform detail has also improved, including a slider for sleeve length.
  • Russell says the team is doing something for PS4 Pro, but can't talk about it yet.
  • The old 17 heads used through the years are gone and have been replaced by 49 heads based on different archetypes.
  • There are 22 new facial hair sets, including some modeled after players such as Josh Donaldson and Dallas Keuchel.
  • The team is doing different body modeling for the game to represent more body types. This includes a new husky body type and sliders for hips, glutes, shoulders, and spine length in the player creator.

The improvements to the graphics and player creation have me very excited for this years game. 49 different face options should go a long way in making created players actually look and feel different. Especially with the added hair and beard options and body sliders. Created players might actually look drastically different from each other this year.

The only problem i can see is for carryover saves, how it'll effect the created prospects that already exist in 16', and how that'll impact OSFM also.

Uniform detail improving is huge, i hope the slider for sleeve length refers to jersey sleeves and undershirt sleeves and compression sleeves, so we can finally replicate 4/5 length sleeves like Bryce Harper, Matt Kemp, Anthony Rizzo, Marcus Stroman and Yoan Moncada wear (those are just players off the top of my head).

Spoiler

Hopefully part of uniform improvements is the option to wear unbuttoned jerseys as well.

The face skin textures look so much better too, really impressive stuff so far, hopefully the body sliders are used for real players as well and not just for player creation.

LOL, Game Informer blowing the lid off yet again. This is all fantastic news but I seriously wonder if SDS wanted all of this out there so soon.

I'm sure they were sitting on it until the time hit where they were able to release the information to the public. They probably got an exclusive with Russell and had a NDA that expired today so they could be the first to get this information to the public. Hence how they have that exclusive screenshot of the comparison faces.

Whoever said we're in for something special with 17 was absolutely right!!

Things are looking very, very, very, very good so far!

Russell had mentioned something a few days ago about some graphics info coming out on the 13th(today), so I'm guessing he was well aware that GI was dropping this much info.

Also I'm very curious what the PS4 Pro will bring. Doubt it'll be something as big as better cloth physics (but I can hope). However if it's simply a constant 60fps across all gameplay and cutscenes, that would be enough for me to upgrade.

As for DD, looks like I will not be playing much DD this year. I was hoping for a better offline way to play, but it looks like that ain't happening. Was hoping "Seasons" were going to be that, but it's for online play against other humans. The exact thing that has turned me away from the mode over the last year.
I agree. I love the card collecting mode and playing with that team. However, the lack of Offline modes has been pushing me away from it. I like Online Head-to-Head play but it gets very annoying and frustrating at times, also my internet speed isn't great.

Though maybe Seasons offer some decent rewards that I'll have to get involved in.

"Things affecting the ball physics and behavior: The location/height of the pitch, ball speed, where the swing is, the height of the batter, angle of the bat, velocity of the bat, spin of the ball, and more."

We saw how many different hits in the Twitch Stream last week in a span of 10 minutes, with the same batter and fast ball down the middle.
I can't imagine how many we could see throughout a week span using different hitters, pitchers, pitches, stadiums and atmosphere

"The grass patterns in 2017 are no longer faked like in 2016. They change realistically depending the camera angle and how the light is striking the field."

If this means what we think it means, the game is going to look that much better....

"Player Creation

The old 17 heads used through the years are gone and have been replaced by 49 heads based on different archetypes. "You won't see any more of those monsters," says Russell.
There are 22 new facial hair sets, including some modeled after players such as Josh Donaldson and Dallas Keuchel.
The number of hair styles has been expanded (mullets, mohawks, rat tails, African-American hairstyle types, etc,), including old-school hairstyles.
The team is doing different body modeling for the game to represent more body types. This includes a new husky body type and sliders for hips, glutes, shoulders, and spine length in the player creator.
Player-specific animations can be mixed and matched, so you could have one guy's home run celebration with another's batting stance."

Yes I copied the entire Player Creation section because it all sounded like the improvements all of us have been waiting for. Music to my ears
Especially love the mix/matching player specific animations.

"The new optional catcher throw meter for pickoffs"

Really hoping made this optional even with Meter Throwing

"Ball placement in the throws is being tweaked, as Russell says the ball placement for the accurate throws is off a little." ???

I don't quite know what this is referring to (pitching, fielding?) but it sounds like a nice improvement

This is lining up to be the best iterations of The Show EVER

I'm terrible at heads/faces so I am extremely glad to see there are now 49 instead of 17 to choose from.

OMG music to my ears...or should I say eyes. Finally!!!! Player models and sleeve length adjustable is a dream come true. Thank you Ramone!

I'm psyched and can't wait. This game is an automatic buy for me every year. This looks amazing. I wish the body type improvements etc. would be available in the player editor, not just the creator so we could make improvements to real life MLB guys. And yes I know( player likeness cannot be changed)...... by scea. But if it were left I. The editor and up to us that'd be awesome. Pablo Sandoval btw is in the best shape of his life; he looks like a different person so hopefully that'll be in there.

I wish they would expand more on the difference with the pro now so I could adjust financially to go buy that and a new tv. God I'm excited

I chuckled when I read this. Then I LOL'd as I read on and saw so many people apparently thinking you were serious.

But regardless if this GI article was supposed to be published now or not (I'm pretty sure Ramone did an interview with them like this last year, didn't he?), I'm really looking at all of these things as pure gravy. I honestly was happy enough just knowing about the new ball physics. Now seeing again it being mentioned about much more detailed Park Effects for all stadiums... Oh, yeah, baby.
