MLB The Show 17 News Post

Game Informer has just posted their interview with MLB The Show 17 game designer, Ramone Russell, giving us 48 more details about the game, including Diamond Dynasty, smarter A.I. (as well as more less-than-perfect-but-realistic), new ball physics, the importance of animations, and much more.

They have also included a couple of screenshots showing off the faces of Max Scherzer and Anthony Rizzo from MLB The Show 16 vs. MLB The Show 17.

We have listed some of the details below. Make sure to read the full article here and post your thoughts.
  • The game has over 1,000 new gameplay animations, including non-perfect/mistake animations, which the game didn't have in the past.
  • Russell estimates that there are somewhere between 25-50 new home run swings.
  • Uniform detail has also improved, including a slider for sleeve length.
  • Russell says the team is doing something for PS4 Pro, but can't talk about it yet.
  • The old 17 heads used through the years are gone and have been replaced by 49 heads based on different archetypes.
  • There are 22 new facial hair sets, including some modeled after players such as Josh Donaldson and Dallas Keuchel.
  • The team is doing different body modeling for the game to represent more body types. This includes a new husky body type and sliders for hips, glutes, shoulders, and spine length in the player creator.

Now that is a very nice improvement if I say so myself!

"Graphics

Click each comparison picture for a better look.

Some of the work done on the faces in particular include: Sweat effects, new skin tone lighting and textures, and eyes with more depth and life. The latter includes getting the eye shapes right. "Hopefully," says Russell, "we lost that ghost look."
The shadows on players' faces when wearing caps were faked last year, but in 17 they are from real lighting sources.
Uniform detail has also improved, including a slider for sleeve length.
Russell says the team is doing something for PS4 Pro, but can't talk about it yet.
The screens above and their noticeable detail aren't the product of new face scans. The improvements are inherent in the work done this year. Face scans in general are done during spring training and implemented in the following year.
The grass patterns in 2017 are no longer faked like in 2016. They change realistically depending the camera angle and how the light is striking the field.
More licensed equipment has been added.
Player Creation

The old 17 heads used through the years are gone and have been replaced by 49 heads based on different archetypes. "You won't see any more of those monsters," says Russell.
There are 22 new facial hair sets, including some modeled after players such as Josh Donaldson and Dallas Keuchel.
The number of hair styles has been expanded (mullets, mohawks, rat tails, African-American hairstyle types, etc,), including old-school hairstyles.
The team is doing different body modeling for the game to represent more body types. This includes a new husky body type and sliders for hips, glutes, shoulders, and spine length in the player creator.
Player-specific animations can be mixed and matched, so you could have one guy's home run celebration with another's batting stance."

[emoji1591] Yes! Yes! To all of this! So many legacy issues got attention!

Thank you, I am a happy man-boy

I would take that one with a caveat - we know there are two new voices joining the team. So a decent chunk of that is likely to get them up to speed with with the rest of the crew (or replacing them - maybe Lyons, Karros, or Allegri are gone). It should definitely make the game sound more fresh, though - no mistake about that.

That Rizzo face scan looks like the real deal. Also body type sliders are much needed.

Yes I think they are hiding something huge especially as far as presentation is concerned.

What could MLB 17 do with eSports? I don't see it lol.

I am highly impressed with what I have seen and read here. It has been awhile since I have been this excited about a baseball game release last couple of years they just kinda looked the same as far as graphics go with a little here & there improvements. I half to say this looks like a completely different game. Man the detail on Rizzo looks amazing. The 49 faces compared to the ugly 17 is huge and the new slider adjustments for creating players is another plus.

Wow, that really does look like heterochromia. And a google search indicates that, yes, he indeed has it.

This I think will go a long way towards fixing the issues a lot of people have with the player models.

Also I'm very curious what the PS4 Pro will bring. Doubt it'll be something as big as better cloth physics (but I can hope). However if it's simply a constant 60fps across all gameplay and cutscenes, that would be enough for me to upgrade.

As for DD, looks like I will not be playing much DD this year. I was hoping for a better offline way to play, but it looks like that ain't happening. Was hoping "Seasons" were going to be that, but it's for online play against other humans. The exact thing that has turned me away from the mode over the last year.

Curious if the mixing of players animations includes pitchers as well, meaning we can use Scherzer's windup delivery and then use Britton's stretch delivery?
