I am really enjoying this game. I have played all the typical console racers, all the Forza's, GT's, and everything in between. PC is filling the much needed sim gap that was not present in previous console races. I love the focus that this game has on sim racing. It may not be perfect "sim", but it is by far the best that I have experienced on console.
I am also playing no assists and 80 AI. I have only been racing solo events with 20 AI racers and finished last every time except for the last 2 races, so I am improving. I am racing the same car, same track. I am addicting to getting faster and better with same car and track before moving on. One thing that really helped me was turning the racing line on for a few races to get a feel for brake points and speeds through corners. Then remove the racing line and try to match or beat your lap times with racing line on. It helped me quite a bit. Also useful for unfamiliar tracks.
Also, anybody know how to get the rear view mirror to stay on in "HUD"? I have it on in the HUD settings, but it doesn't seem to be saving my settings. I have changed it during a race and back at main menu, but everytime I start a race, the HUD shows mirror "off".
We should definitely get an OS room going. Even just practice laps since people (including me) are still working through getting "up to speed" with this game.

Hit right on the control pad and you get the rear view mirror.
How are you using your throttle and brakes? Hard acceleration out of corners and while turning will cause the car to spin out. Hard braking will cause the brakes to lock up (if you aren't using ABS that is).
For me I downshift into the gear I want before I enter the corner, remain in that gear until the apex then gently apply the accelerator pedal out of the turn until my wheels are pointing straight then I floor it and shift as normal.
Having an appropriate line into a corner will also help keep your vehicle on the track.
Are you using assists? I would have everything on until you get comfortable.
I use all the assists, but I use auto shifting not manual. I've been just doing solo races until I get more comfortable. The biggest change for me is going from FZ Horizon and easing on the throttle/brake.
Here's my only successful attempt at it with the stock setup- as you can see it took 7 laps and almost a half hour, lol. Even then I almost blew it on the final turn:
I don't know what was worse to manage - the tires or the gear ratio.
Not bad, much better than my attempt. The thing was understeering like crazy for me. I'll try and give it another go tonight after work.
One thing that's a little irritating is having to go back to the main screen to acccess the options menu. That's really my only complaint at this point.
Got this today and I'm in struggle mode right now. Just started my career in the kart series and I'm having a hard time keeping my speed in turns. I'll have to adjust from all my drive club tendencies.

You don't. You can access the options menu by pressing the Options button (PS4, Start button on Xbox?). I thought you had to back out all the way too at first. It doesn't work while racing (e. or in the pit box) though, unfortunately.

I'm still trying to keep on the track. Taking a focus around Stowe circuit at Silverstone and just churning laps out.

I'm doing a single offline race weekend against the AI. I'm sitting in the pit box, and I still don't see an option to change the controller, display or audio settings. (Maybe I'm just missing it.) :brick wall
Edit: I see what you are saying.. you can quick access the options from the race set up screen prior to going into the race itself. That's cool but I want to access the options from the pit box.

I don't believe you can change settings while in a race. I was looking last night, kept having to go back to the main menu to change any of the settings. Luckily the load times are not bad at all and you can get back on the course quickly.
