MLB 14 The Show News Post

Hey everyone, I’m Kirby St. John, a designer with the MLB The Show development team. My main focus year-to-year is improving and evolving one of our most popular modes, Road to The Show. The mode made some big strides last year, especially in terms of gameplay and presentation, but for MLB 14, we really wanted to focus on the logic and systems that govern the mode in an effort to allow for more variety and less restrictions. We also wanted to provide some new experiences never seen before in RTTS. The video touched on a lot of topics, but in this blog I will expand on what was introduced there and discuss some of the exciting things that were only briefly mentioned.

A couple things which you may or may not have considered. I play manage mode, played about 500 games in mlbts 13 - not simmed - and all of them were offline. I only plug my cable into the playstation to download patches, then I plug it back into the computer I am using to post this message. Because you don't see users playing franchise games online doesn't mean they aren't happening. The number of people who are concerned about the disparity between online and offline franchise features would be an indication a lot of people play offline.

Second, an rtts game can be played a lot faster than a game in franchise and therefore more games will be played in rtts.

We are very aware of offline users and the time commitment difference associated with paying RTTS games in contrast with other modes.

Totally number of units sold dived by total number of unique PSN accounts gives us a really accurate portrait on how many (or few) gamers are playing The Show offline.

As a catcher the new catcher mode is really exciting. I'v ealways wanted to be a RTTS catcher but it would take months to get into the major leagues and years to have a legit career. But with the changes, not having to call every pitch, only when guys are in scoring position and having to move the glove to catch and block keeps it more involved than calling a pitch and not doing anything else. Very Excited!

With the new catcher changes does that mean that you cannot catch with just a runner on 1st base?

I'm not sure if the changes were an option to speed things up or if its just changed now. I only dabbled in using a catcher due to calling every pitch, but I feel like the main thing I'd want to do as a catcher is try to throw runners out at 2nd, other than calling pitches. I was hoping that it would be similar to other positions where when you load into fielding you might be involved. Maybe have a runner steal during an at bat and load you into that at bat?

I have played online and I have played a few rtts games online, and I have a PSN account but the vast majority of my games are offline franchise, manage mode.

Holy crap this sounds beyond amazing. I basically bought MLB 13 for this one specific game mode and had a blast; and this seems about ten times as great. I only wish NBA 2K14 could put half as much effort and care into their my career game mode instead of drowning us in microtransactions! This game alone seems to be worth a ps4 haha

While this may be true you should also assume you are likely an outlier in their statistics. I would bet on their numbers being an accurate depiction of mode usage.

Will there be 2 people filling the same draft spot ala NBA 2K? Like if I got drafted by the Bobcats at #4 in 2K, Zeller shows up as at the same pick. Is it the same with The Show? Not a big deal, just a little OCD thing I guess lol.

Too excited about no longer having to deal with "the other" baseball game. This game is a SYSTEM seller.

OK guys, so, i'm buying a PS3 in the next few weeks, and did not played The Show since the the PS2 (MLB the Show 10, i guess, the cover player was Mauer). I can't afford a PS4 right now (i live in Brazil, and a PS4 here costs an eye and an arm) and i want to play some PS3 exclusives i couldn't cause i chose the 360.

The question is: should i buy The Show 14, or just buy the last year's game? I mean, i know i could pay less for the last year's version, but if the improvements are really that great, should i pick 14?

improvements are aplenty this year. You'd be foolish not to wait 11 days until MLB 14 comes out. Just wait.

If you have the extra $ to spend, go for '14. The new features in this year's game seems to be worth it, in my opinion.
