MLB 14 The Show News Post

Hey everyone, I’m Kirby St. John, a designer with the MLB The Show development team. My main focus year-to-year is improving and evolving one of our most popular modes, Road to The Show. The mode made some big strides last year, especially in terms of gameplay and presentation, but for MLB 14, we really wanted to focus on the logic and systems that govern the mode in an effort to allow for more variety and less restrictions. We also wanted to provide some new experiences never seen before in RTTS. The video touched on a lot of topics, but in this blog I will expand on what was introduced there and discuss some of the exciting things that were only briefly mentioned.

What happens currently when you go into RTTS with full 90 man rosters? Do the players in the draft go into the ether, or are they added to teams similar to how draft picks are in franchise?
Okay, I'll try to answer several questions in one post....

When you go back to school, you will compete in the Showcase again against new players. Also, when you choose to sign with a team that drafts you, the entire draft class will enter into the pros with you, however most of them are assigned to Single-A first, so you will probably only be seeing them once they make their way up the organizational ladder. Still, it is very possible that you will be playing against the number one overall pick in your draft somewhere down the line.

Your first year of pro ball will always be 2014. The Showcase and Draft is always in an ambiguous year, so even if you do four years of school, the year you sign and begin your career will be the 2014 season.

Do the players replace those already in the roster?

For example if I start RTTS with OSFM and have 15 players in single A, will the draft picks from the showcase replace them?

So either you play pro ball at 18 with low ratings in 2014 or play at 22 with higher ratings if go back to college. This will be fun to play around with for sure. Is it May yet????????

Wow, I'm so pumped!!! May can't come quick enough! I'm so happy that my numbers are what will decide my fate, and not those goals. I had a hard time making those goals because I can't read small print, so always would need someone to come read for m every time they came up. Also, the option to have the play-by-play is huge!!Last year, I couldn't play rtts, because I rely so much on that. I can't wait to broadcast my first mlb at bat!

Oh god no. "My Team" and "Ultimate Team" modes are ruining sports gaming as we know it. Keep up the good work on franchise and RTTS SCEA.

Also as mentioned before, if you choose to go to school it would be cool if they at least acknowledged what school you choose, Im a big UNC fan, it would be pretty cool to hear them say Joe Random out of North Carolina, or during his time in Chapel Hill he elevated his game etc...
However in saying that I know there could be legal licence issues

Catching looks a lot more immersive
There is also a 4x boost looking so if you can earn stubs quickly enough you can really speed up the process.

The college thing might not be that easy or worth it for such a small non-gameplay aspect of the game.

Dont know if this has been asked but...
If you choose to go back to school, do you also re-do the Amateur Showcase???

# 51 MantiMania @ 03/17/14 06:21 PM
Are all of these upgrades to Road to the Show available for the offline/non-connected version of the mode as well?

Also, has any tweaks been made to the progression that makes the mode more grindy to incentivize microtransaction purchases (ala NBA 2K14?)

# 52 aguero90 @ 03/17/14 06:37 PM
Yes. You don't have to play online to get these features.

That's a bit of a leading question, but they did mention it costs more training points now to improve ratings that are already very high. However, they also said that was done so that players would actually have a more realistic decline late in the career:

Quote:
The Training Screen has been enhanced this year to make it more user-friendly and informative. You no longer have to guess how many points it will take to level-up an attribute, as the screen will tell you exactly how many points it will cost to upgrade to the level you have set the bar to. You can also train multiple attributes at one time and keep track of how much progress you have made with each attribute in that current year. From a logic standpoint, the cost of training has changed too, so now it is really expensive to level-up when you start getting attributes in the 80’s and 90’s. This makes it harder to become unrealistically good and expensive to maintain such high attributes when they start regressing.
I'm sure opinions are going to vary on that (they always do), but it seems fair to me.

This sounds really impressive. I think I will give RTTS a shot for the first time this year. Can anyone tell me if you are allowed to use custom rosters with RTTS? Not a big deal if not but I think I would prefer playing against fictional players over the actual MLB if I was to create a new guy.

To clarify, offline games are not tracked? 90% of all the games played in MLB 13 online were played in RTTS? Does RTTS have an online mode?

The upgraded catcher RTTS makes me want to be a catcher now. Sounds awesome, I just hope the loading screens load quickly so we can stay immersed in the game.

Also are those new training modes available outside of RTTS???

I think he is referring to when your system is running the wifi or hooked up with the Ethernet cable. That's how they collect their data.

Most of the training modes are available outside of RTTS by going to batting or pitching practice from the main menu. Once you've loaded into practice mode, you can switch between the different games. Fielding and base running modes are not accessible as those gameplay mechanics are specific to RTTS.

That's dissapointing. I was hoping fielding practice made it back in this year.
