The NHL 14 early release for season ticket subscribers is available now. Be sure to share your impressions of the full retail version of the game below!
the game is pretty good after playing it a bit more. i think it plays best on all star mode at the hardcore sim preset, with some additional tweaks. i know i lowered shot accuracy, and put pass speed and accuracy to 0. that seemed to help alot.
definitely better than nhl13.
i just hate how you can gain the offensive zone too easy, but once in there, Ill admit, the cpu defense is pretty legit.
i also hate the animation when the players always receive a bad pass when its behind them. They also receive the pass behind them. I wish they would can that animation, and have the pass go by them or deflect off the stick. i hate that animation.
guess ill have to deal with it, because the game is pretty good otherwise.
only other issues i have with the game are the piss poor presentation, the season and gm modes suck and i hate the create team.
the season modes need a re-haul. They need more stats. boxscores. see mlb the show.
create team should be easier to get players on there. They should have preset players that you can just add on there so it doesnt take a week to create all the players.
also- when the hell is EA gonna allow us to edit all players names? whats the deal with this? The 2k series allowed us to edit anything.
I find it a solid game overall, much prefer it to NHL 13. It still features the frustrating 1 shot 1 goal for the CPU in games I have been dominating to that point. They also still have some players in the game who never cough up the puck ever it seems.
I noticed the faster load times and the lack of lagging NHL 13 was terrible for. If my goaltenders actually played like real goalies, I would probably give this a ten out of ten, but it's a solid 9.5 from a purely offline standpoint. I'll give HUT a shot when I get bored of Be a GM and have built up a ton of pucks to get a decent couple of packs with. I found the new team building system (bronze CHL, silver AHL, gold NHL) discouraging. I hate that the training cards still only last one game too.
How much have people tested how much effect ratings have this year? for example speed.
it is a long time ago I tested it myself in '11. Back then it didn't make a difference what the ratings were.
I tested some sliders with teams that were far apart in ratings. I destroyed France with the Red Wings and chased down every loose puck. I didn't speed past anyone when I had the puck, but there was enough of a difference to get a little separation. The final score was 7-0 Red Wings.
Another game I was Modo playing against Nashville. Nashville outskated me and beat me 2-0. It was tough to get good scoring chances. Both games were on All Star level with 0 game speed and 0 acceleration for both sides.
Played a game against the Wings as the Sabres.
Lost 4-1 (I suck), but what I noticed was there were 0 fights that game despite some big hits.
I guess the heavyweights of both teams like Ennis, Vanek and Zetterberg decided to let their play dictate the game, haha.
Ok but I meant player ratings. Sorry should've been more specific. Like trying to set player speed to 36 vs 99 and see if there is a difference ingame.
I haven't tested ratings from a player vs. player standpoint, but I can tell you I noticed a difference when playing with an NHL team with good skaters like Detroit vs. skating with a team of average skaters like Modo. I could also tell a difference in skating with Bertuzzi versus Cleary. The attributes seem to matter this year more than in years past. I have the attribute effects slider at 3, as well.

Doesn't the attribute slider work in reverse? Meaning, if I have it at 0, then it takes all attributes at face-value? But at 10, it means everyone is juiced up regardless?
I remember reading that once here and getting confused over that logic.
I would have thought at 10, it would mean a greater divide between high and low ratings, but I believe it's the opposite.

It doesn't quite work like that. At 0 everyone is equal, but at the highest setting the highest players get boosts. I'm not sure the exact scale but at the highest setting everything 90 and above is given a 99 rating. One of the devs explained it on here a couple of years back and said players play true to their ratings at 3. It's the most complex slider and if you're enjoying the game with the setting you have it on, it's probably best not to think about it.
The new tuner has definitely had some affect on the amount of fighting that takes place.
Wherease before, anytime a big hit happened, a fight broke out, now it's far more toned down. I have to look for fights now, haha.
Had 2 great games, both 3-2 losses; Washington 3, Winnipeg 2 (SO) & Calgary 3 - NY Islanders 2.
Despite losing, I had a great time in both. In the first, I came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie up late in the 3rd. Kane snuck one by Holtby on a shortside, backhand scramble and Ladd scored on a breakaway after blocking a shot from the point.
In the Calgary game, I loved getting the puck to Taveres. He was a threat with the puck from anywhere 15' away from the net.
In fact, his goal came off using a defender as a screen and firing it top-shelf. Grabner and his speed caused havoc all over the ice too.
I'm also liking the attribute slider at 3. From what I've been told, this prevents any top guys from getting any extra boosts. Everyone plays as they should. And it seemed like it in both games. Ovie and Backstrom were dangerous but not impossible to contain.
I can't wait for the official season to start so I can get some updated rosters.

Playing on the same settings and really enjoying the game, too. Once the first regular season rosters are out, I'll be starting up a Be A GM with the Avs and won't be looking back.
I understand the complaints people have with the game, but for me, I feel like NHL 14 has really improved from the past few years and with the added benefit of me not having to mess with sliders, I can see myself playing this for a long time.
I said I wouldn't but I've fallen. Bought the game this morning and played a few game this afternoon.
The game is playing good, it's better than NHL 13. I've seen some cool things and maybe I'm completely crazy, but I have the feeling players aren't skating the same way on the ice. Controlling Subban feels like skating like Subban while when I control a guy like Letang, it's smoother and not the same.
The only things that baffle me about this game is the presentation that's exactly the same than last year. There's no way that development team couldn't heard about the fact that players aren't getting together after a goal. Seeing this last year was frustrating, seeing it again this year makes it just sad, it push me toward thinking that group of guys really don't care at all about the game of hockey.
Overall, so far, I'm happy with the game. It's not worse than it was, but it's not an homerun. It's a fair game, it's not the hockey you see on TV or live in a hockey ring, but it's not unplayable when you have a good set of sliders.
I also picked it up yesterday. I needed a break from GTA 5 for a while, I played last night for a few hours and enjoyed it. I'm assuming that opening day rosters will come out in the next couple weeks right?
I've been having a lot of fun with this game. However, every once in a while you have a game where nothing goes your way and everything goes in against your goalie. Just have a game where of the 4 goals against me, 3 went between my goalies legs after I had destroyed the player with the puck and then proceeded to do circles around the loose puck until that player got up, grabbed the puck, and fired a low backhand between my goalies legs.
I was very frustrating, but I have had more good games than bad.
hopefully in the next tuner they lower the hitting power.
as of last nite chara can bundle anyone one the ice. sends them flying 5 feet.
this is with my hit slider at 0 and hitting assist at 0.
