NBA 2K14 News Post

On occasion, we tag Forum posts for the homepage at OS. This NBA 2K14 impressions, videos and Q&A thread is a prime example. See below to read JasonWilliams55 impressions, then continue into the comments for Q&A from him, as well as Lid, based off of their hands-on at the Vegas EXPO.

Sup y'all?

Let me start with some background then I'll dive into the questions from my original Vegas thread.

So I arrived at the EXPO with the other billions of people and finally made it over to the 2K booth were they had 8 stations setup with 2K14, all first quarter 6 minutes long and only Spurs v Heat, you could switch between teams though. The build itself was extremely basic, no PnR action, no Playcalling, broadcast cam, pro settings.

So I get there at 11am, play until 1230-1'ish when Ronnie and LD2K arrived, so I stopped playing (somewhat) and talked to them for the most part until PG arrived (115ish until 230ish iirc) PG thoroughly whipped Ronnie. After PG left, Ronnie was floating around the booth, LD2K was sitting in a chair where Lids (OS) and I had surrounded him and was picking his brain and just general chatting about all things 2K/NBA, future of, visions, etc... Very enlightening talk, Chris and Ronnie are both standup peeps, very down to earth (as Lids said), they believe in the product (not just business belief either) but truly want the best basketball sim (yes SIM) possible, but alas they are not the makers nor the directors. They both want to be as transparent as possible but they still have strings attached (so to speak) to them. Don't look into the 'strings' part, its the best wording I can think of this morning.

So back to the chatting, from 230 - 4ish it was LD2K (Chris), Lids and I, straight up, no one else. At 4-415ish, they had to get ready to leave, and so, by the graces of all things 2K, Lids and I were both invited to come hang while they spent their free time before having to leave for PAX (oh yeah, some info will be dropped there, so be ready for that). So from 415ish until 715, I was able to talk to Ronnie and Chris (unfiltered) (Lids had to bounce for a bit but made it back around 7) so it was literally Ronnie, Chris and me for roughly 3 hours. Alot of things were discussed, some I can talk about some I can't, so much intertwined that I feel for how the Czar has to choose his words when he posts.

On that 3 hours... we talked/discussed current gen, next gen, future of both, marketing for both, gameplay ideas, whats doable, what not, etc etc etc... but let me get straight to next gen since its very easy to talk about. I got no info on it, they would not discuss it, period, but, let me say, they were bursting at the seams wanting to talk about it, more so than a 300lb man at an all you can eat.

They were honestly giddy about next gen and what its gonna do, but at the same time they had that childish fever about it, they also didn't want to dismiss want current gen has to offer.

Man, there is a lot I want to say, but just can't quite say outright and will wait until after some more official things are said.

Current Gen (CG)

CG is the culmination of 2k11 - 2k13, the best of each one mashed together, ironed out, tuned and balanced on both sides of the ball. Even with the lame demo build that was there, it was smoother, cleaner and more polished feeling than 13, yes that noticeable even on the demo build.

The build Ronnie and PG played on, made the demo feel a year old, it was 10x smoother/cleaner than the demo build. It was played on PS3 throughout the EXPO, with no noticeable jaggies anywhere, that is how smooth it looked. I was surprised by that, since the PS3 versions have always had that noticeable lack of graphical quality than the Xbox versions, that was no longer apparent. But I also did not get to see a Xbox version either, so take that for what it is. Just know that 14 is not a 10x increase on graphics (they are maxed out of memory on CG) but it is cleaner and more polished looking.

Graphic wise I guess one COULD say 14 is NBA2K13.5, but I wouldn't worry about that aspect, 14 gameplay wise is >>>> 13.

So while 14 might look like 13, it definitely does not play like it.

Not gonna get into details quite yet, but will when I go through and answer the questions, that's where you'll find the meat and potatoes. And at the end of the q/a section, I will leave y'all with one MAJOR TEASE. Yes... yes... hate me now.

Do you know anything about the plays? I feel there are so much useless plays and variations that I can't get the ones I want. We need fewer plays with more options like horns1 that you showed us. BTW the elevator part of this horns set is sick https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lccd...e_gdata_player it would be great if they could improve on such things

yeah, i didn't like that either. i assume you're talking about the 1:37 mark in this vid below.

at the 1:37 mark: Chalmers is running right into Leonard as Leonard gathers for a dunk, but the dunk gather is unstoppable and there is no contact...the dunk gather should've blended into a "ride/layup" animation instead of a dunk.

looks like dunk gathers are still resistant to contact. Chalmers was directly in his path as he left his feet. Chalmers should've bumped him as he left his feet and cut him off from continuing for the dunk....instead Chalmers does the dreaded "Mario run" where he runs in place against Leonard's body as if on a treadmill. "Mario running" is so last gen. I'm ready for some real-time physics in next gen.

hopefully these types of situations will be fixed by adding a real-time collision system in the next gen....then real physics will determine everything and we won't have to deal with the game ignoring collisions like this

Watched that video a little while ago myself There is a play that has similar action to that, called "Horns Split Screen" (Hornets playbook). Someone posted about that play (GSW "Elevator") earlier in the year, and I mentioned the same play in that thread as well. The action of HSS isn't exactly the same, but the end result is the shooter you want coming up between the 2 screeners (usually...sometimes the CPU runs him around the outside guy, instead of between the 2, as the play is diagrammed)

It would be sick if we could get of all the horns variations in the playbooks and just have one with all the options (like horns1). Also I would like to choose where my players would be on plays, for example if my sf is a bad shooter and my of is a 3pt marks I would like to have him in the corner and the sf on the high post.

Tldr: they need to cut the trash plays so we can call the good ones easily(or let us assign 4-5 on the go plays) and where our players are in them.

yeah i didnt see that move, but dont put 100% stock into that. hopefully it is gone, someone else at the EXPO did ask about a glitch move in the paint (i specifically remember them asking cause I was like, what move?) so maybe that was the move, i dunno, im not 100% on it. hopefully after PAX LD2k can fill in some blanks for us.

Never mind that spin move, what about the garbage before that with Westbrook blowing past Wade's left with his left hand? Please tell me that's out of the game. That was one of the biggest eyesores of 2K13.

We already have that in 2K13, I use it a lot in MyTeam when in transition. Plus, there's about 4 transition plays in the game, spread between one of the classic Bulls teams (97-98 I think) and the '98 Spurs. You can tell they're transition because they contain the word 'EARLY' and the starting place for the place is just a few feet away from the half-court line. The plays with picks have the picks really high as well.

is the mode that'll make my player and crew drop off the map on current gen, or next? also, did you learn anything about current gen crew?

I think the one under Manu is some new Euro step sig skill I wouldn't be surprised if they got rid of acrobat and this one replace it. It looks like it is avoiding a dot with two X's. Probably something like this person is good at avoiding contact for layups. Tony Parker and Manu both had that booster and two X's so I am really leaning to evader/euro step and the other one probably has to do with quick first steps

There was another one Duncan had but I don't know what it is.

what'd be cool is if we could make our own plays, of course assuming you can't do that already, which i dont believe is in the game. But i had a few good ideas for plays that i wish i could makeup then use in the game for my offline association. That'd be really cool, and add more playing time to association.

I was thinking euro step also. But the one with the x looks like a run off screen or off ball sig skills. I think that manu and tony both come off those baseline scrrens well in real life. I thought I saw a line like the x was running from baseline to wing. That one of duncan that looks like a basketball goal. I have no idea about that.

alabamarob,

Yep it is probably a off ball sig skill. A dot = ball and the X's are like play movement. Moving around the ball or off ball sig skill.

i dont if this was asked already. Why the hell Splitter is bringing the ball down with the heat all players are back in defense? The one that leads to wade steal and haslem dunk..

Yo JWill what's up man? I'm Lid's brother, was there with y'all early and then for "dinner" with Ronnie and Chris. Haven't been able to read everything that was posted thus far, but let me say I definitely drilled Chris on questions about defense. What he assured me of was exciting and most of it was evident in the stripped down build we were able to play.

This year you'll be able to block shots at a variety of different points which is HUGE when you think about it. Last year online guys would play the passing lanes with Bron and Wade, pick it off and your poor PG getting back would either have to get out of the way, or give up the And 1. This year if you time it correctly, you can block a dunk on the pull back (think Tomahawk) or when he brings it down to pump (think double pump reverse).

Another thing I noticed playing as both the Heat and the Spurs is when you get past the initial defender off the dribble, the help defense seemed to make the right rotations. Meaning one time Bron beat me off the dribble and Ray Allen was spotted up closer to him, but the help actually came from Wade's man on the other wing. I know, seems small, but I was delighted to see this. Continuing on the same play, Bron spun in the lane and was stripped of the ball before he could go up. It was a beautiful sequence to play and view and wasn't possible in 2k13

The walk up animations and perimeter animations while dribbling are revamped some as well. Chalmers attempted to crowd Tony Parker and he turned his back to him with contact still going, looking over his shoulder keeping the dribble alive and continuing the play. When I would drive out of this animation, Parker would put his arm/elbow up to create space between him and Chalmers to drive. I was told by Chris/LD2K that in this situation the defender would be able to draw charges and the offensive player would be able to counter that with a step back or any other move you can think of to get a shot off. The key point in that is none of it is canned and at no point are you stuck.

One of the big things I kept bugging Chris/LD2K about also was if great defense would be able to dominate average to poor offense. This answer was confirmed with a "Hell Yes" and a statement that there is no catch up or "cheese" AI that will try to give the offense an advantage. So no more shutting down a Bron cheeser for 22 seconds only for him to hit an unbelievable up and under. Definitely gives more incentive and tools for dominant defenses to shine.

There's a lot more that I saw and asked about, but it's escaping me right now. I can confirm that Ronnie and Chris were overly excited about next gen even though they can't reveal anything now. Just from being with them I'm even more excited than I was because you could tell this wasn't game, but real ball and video game lovers excited for what they have in store for us. With that said, current gen is definitely a real focus and what I played yesterday was leaps ahead of 2k13 and you couldn't even call plays, picks etc. and it was no where near as polished as the version PG and Ronnie played. That says a lot because the demo build would be enough to satisfy even the biggest 2k13 critic.

Lastly, I just want to say Chris and Ronnie are real down to earth and genuine guys. During our conversation they admitted things they loved and hated about past games and what they bring up to be fixed. It felt great to feel like they read every thread and suggest every great idea that comes from sites like OS. I think JWill, Lid and I got a better sense over some the struggle that they go through with taking a great idea to the powers that be and actually getting it implemented. It's not that everyone at 2k isn't trying or don't hear us, trust me they do, it's deadlines and other hurdles they have to cross that we don't see. But those guys truly do care and I'm not an easy guy to convince. I'll go back and read this whole thread later, but until then peace and I can't wait to own both current and next gen from what I saw, heard and from even what was asked and couldn't be answered lol.

Just gonna put this out there to squash any off thoughts.

No contracts were signed I personally was only asked to not spoil things that have not come out officially. That is it.

Ron and LD2K were both extremely open and obviously passionate about basketball and 2K. I cannot express my gratitude at the cordialness they both exhibited by allowing me/us to chill with them.
