EA Sports have posted a new NCAA Football 14 blog, which breaks down gameplay and Infinity Engine 2.0.
Quote:
Another significant improvement to gameplay in NCAA Football 14 is the running game. This year, we enhanced the running game by enabling you to make hard cuts on the field. The running game is an integral piece of college football, and in order to deliver the most realistic experience, we’ve emphasized changing the running game to eliminate inauthentic turning and running. With NCAA Football 14 you can make more hard cuts, which give better feeling of better weight and realistic running.
"Offense wasn’t the only side of the ball that got some love, this year in NCAA Football 14 you will find the Hitstick is much more powerful than ever before. Deliver bone crushing hits and tackles to the unsuspecting ball carrier."
Ugh, Really??? I just wish they'd just completely get rid of the hit-stick, it's SOOOO abusive by users it isn't even funny. Guys without high hit power now will be MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN BEFORE TOO and that worries me. Smh. Hope this doesn't jump to Madden 25 too but it probably will, smh.
Just assuming the lineman are zone blocking, because I recall seeing somewhere that zone blocking was the overall scheme for Offensive line play in NCAA games. I was always taught that double team blocks were executed with "two hands, four eyes," neither O-Lineman fully engaged with the defender. The goal is to block your man until A) you push him to the next level of defenders (with this being a zone blocking scheme, these guys should have a backer they are climbing to) or B) if your designated man scrapes over/comes down to fill gap. This is where your free outside hand comes in handy. If the backer comes over the right of his D-Lineman, the left offensive lineman engaged in the double comes off and takes the linebacker. Then, the lineman opposite to the one engaging the linebacker fully engages the D- Lineman. It becomes two man on man drive blocks. At my old school, we cut when we reached the backer. We may not take him down, but he still has to step back, over, or around us. That slows him down and gives the ball carrier more time to run by untouched.
Maybe I've been taught how to double team wrong, which means that a former SEC Offensive Lineman coached me wrong, or maybe Maryland just executes it slightly different that what I'm accustomed to, but you almost NEVER fully engage a defensive player if there is another lineman engaging him as well. The way that offensive lineman's shoulders are turned away from the field and defense would've gotten me cussed out at the JuCo level. You don't turn you shoulders, you keep them square with your outside hand free in case you have to come off the double team block to get a linebacker. It's extremely difficult to come off of a block to reach a guy running full speed at you if your shoulders are turned to him. He runs right past you and makes the play. This picture makes me wonder if the only thing improved on blocking was WHO TO BLOCK, not HOW TO BLOCK them. End rant.
Everyone sure is jumping to a lot of conclusions based on very little evidence. I also think people have unrealistic expectations when they say things like it looks the same. We're at the end of an era, the look of the games isn't going to change until next gen. They are using these new tools like the IE to perfect it for next gen, so we can truly have the best gameplay possible for years to come and not start all over. In the meantime I think ncaa 14 will be a vastly improved game compared to ncaa 13. I'm very confident in what this dev team is doing and Clint Oldenburg is going to get the o line stuff straightened out, that dudes working too hard for it not to be. Patience folks, the best football gaming of all time is around the corner.
After reading that TGT Q&A thread, NCAA 14 is starting to sound more like NCAA 13.5
No new ratings.......
No new sliders.......
Still bad CPU play calling......
Option game still not good.......
OL/DL interaction the same from last year......
CPU QB still way too accurate.....
Nothing new on the defensive side of the ball other then breakdown mechanic which is automatic.....
Oh well, my expectations were very low to begin with and didn't expect anything other then IE 2.0. Guess I will just wait to see what they can tune up before retail.
Suprised? Well can we get some new cleats, helmets, visuals, stadium upgrades, chain gang, face mask, colored towels & socks etc.. Its obviously from the screens and info coming out this is the same game with a few added additions..
I'll still buy the game, but I will be buying used just like I did last year. I'll get a month out of it, then trade it in towards 2K, just like last year. Essentially a rental.
I feel this post and after 8 years of expecting some miracle to happen with EA football games this gen, I finally get it. This time of year is naturally an exciting time because NCAA Football begins to get us hyped for college football, which leads into Madden hyping us for NFL football. The trick is to enjoy all the hype and excitement around the new EA football games but don't let that lead you into an impulse buy.
It's like watching one of those infomercials for some new product, it's cool to mark time watching all the features it has and what they claim it can do but there is no need to spend money on some product you are only going to use a few times then shelve.
It's the exact reason the EA devs for this game don't visit the OS forums anymore. They know the majority of us are fed up, they know they can go to the EA forums and tout how they fixed team colors, added stadium upgrades and facemasks, and the masses over there would celebrate like it's the greatest thing since sliced bread.
But showing us that foot planting and cut back lanes are BACK in the game, when we last saw them on the PS2 and first Xbox feels like a spit in the face.
These are things that should have been in since NCAA 06 for the Xbox 360. They wasted our time this gen, they know it, we know it. For the life of me I don't understand how more people haven't figured it out.
All that's true enough but like I stated, people, including myself, just get swept up in the hype. Nothing wrong with it really, as long as it's all kept in proper prospective. My problem has been the previous 8 years, I completely lost any perspective and was expecting a different game than the one before it. EA football games and the exclusives are the only time in the history of my gaming life I can think of that I continued to buy games year after year, that I didn't enjoy the previous year. This going on 9 years has been like some marketing clinic, slash social experiment, on habitual football gaming consumers.
This year I will enjoy the hype train like Soul Train and watch the show EA marketing puts on but I damn sure won't be buying either game on these consoles once it's over, lol,
Yeah same here. Love the hype and OS this time of year. It's always my favorite part. It's actually more fun than playing the games at times. I got NCAA last year because it was 40 bucks and Madden was purchased for me, but this year I just can't do it no matter what happens. It's just disrespectful to me had they added jukes from 09 back into the game and they're calling it foot planting. I mean maybe I'm wrong, I'll play the demos, but that's exactly what it seems like they did. Same animations and all. SMH .

might be showing my age here but it was the same way last gen. ps2, ea did the same and so did us as the consumer. i know alot of guys say 04 was one of the best but it was a pure arcade football game. half the routes didnt work, the players were so huge compared to field. you couldnt run half the routes or run plays. 06 was ok and then 09 was really great on ps2 but still all lacked any kind of ai or sense of realism. this gen, early on was a great article about the ai capabilites of the 360 and ps3 and after that i knew we would have a hybrid all gen. to weak of AI to really create a football sim so they kept alot of who the older more arcade style from last gen, so we still have alot of canned animations instead of a flowing game. i guess my expectations have always been tempered on this gen because i knew we wouldnt get the real football experience because the system itself wouldnt allow it.
its really gonna come down to this next gen and if they do like they did last time and try to get the game out within the year of launch instead of building a good base for a few years, there will be a good chance we just get small upgrades every year with alot of marketing hype. but of course this is just my opinion after going through this a few times already with NCAA/BILL WALSH since the 90's

Same here...Last year the sub par stuff just finally broke me down and I skipped the FB games
I mean thats saying something EA....I have been an admitted addict to video game football since 05
I tried and tried to fall in love with their games. I was the kind of guy who would spend months fiddling with sliders to find that perfect formula every year. But by last year it just finally broke my spirits
Whats the saddest part is that, the thing I missed most about not getting the game last year was not being able to participate in the
"Photographic Side of NCAA" Great threads/pics guys
Im still trying to hold out hope that maybe once I see the full gameplay vids/play the demo then something might click. But that OL/DL non-news news just really socked the air out of me
Is it me or does it feel like they mailed it in? It just doesn't feel like they made THAT many updates or improvements to the gameplay. I get that they worked on the run game, but did they really just spend the entire time on that? Infinity Engine was expected the moment they said it wouldn't be in last year. Do QBs still look like idiots when they throw? Is the OL/DL interaction still awful? Is there STILL no Pass Interference called? I mean come on, people say that others complain too much and ask too much but there is a reason when they give us a minimally updated game each year.
I agree that the improvements do seem minimal this year. Also, the EA hype train in general has really slowed down compared to years past.
I am hoping the reason for this is they have now shifted a majority of their focus on the Next-Gen consoles. Personally, I am completely over this gen and the horrible engine they have been trying to build on for 8 years. Hopefully the developers, and suits at EA feel the same way and are planning on wow'ing us with an all new experience next-gen.
This is EA's chance to (semi) right the wrongs they have brought to their football fan base over the last 8 years. I will never forget how horrible this gen was for football gaming, but I will certainly forgive EA if they can put together a GREAT football game for the upcoming consoles.
They certainly have the money, tools and man power to make a great game. Lets see what they do.....

I agree with CH here.
I don't think there is much they can do with the engine they currently have.
Every year, we in the OS community get a little smarter BUT there will always be new people who come along and get immediately sucked into the hype just like we all did when we were the noobs. The cycle remains the same:
Noob> forgiving> hopeful> frustrated>optimistic >angry> clinging to hopefulness> see same issues for 5 years in a row> give up> do not buy on release day anymore> rent> throw out window> get smart and trade in> divorce EA > DONE.
Noob>forgiving............................
My 16 marriage to Ncaa football ended 2 years ago but there is still a part of me that hopes someday the old NCAA football will come back. Ncaa 06, why did you grow up and change? I dont even know who you are anymore.
If we finally get a football game next gen worth all the hype and disappointment of this gen, that will be one glorious day. I'll probably run around my block twice.
The pick doesn't really tell me much it looks very similar to the other years. I'm excited about this game and hopefully the changes they made will make for a better experience.
There is always a group of "this games sucks before I played it" on this board. Which is fine. But some of the post to me seem like ppl expect this game to be as real as football on Saturdays and that will never be the case. Ben Hamiular had a great point in his ign video. he said "fumbled snaps happen in real life, but if you fumbled a snap in the 4th quarter down 7 in your opponents redzone you wouldn't like that gameplay and would hate us for adding that." No matter what EA adds there are certain groups of ppl that will say, the line will never block perfect enough, the socks are not long enough, The numbers are too big, the jersey color is not right.
I'm not saying their latest offering was perfect. But they are making progress.
Ppl talk about the glory days of PS2 and all these older football games as if they were without glitches and flaws. The difference back then was that there was very limited online play and there was no youtube and ebook to help ppl learn glitches and money plays to circumvent the A.I. You had to find that on your own.
For all the ppl complaining about Divsion 2 schools not being in the game ....where they ever really? 90% of the division 2 rosters were a joke they were all generic with maybe the correct number and position. White players were black and vice versa. I think perspective is the key here.

Sorry to tell you, but Ben is WRONG. Dead WRONG. Yeah, the casuals who only want to win no matter what might hate it, but the guys who actually want a SIM game, would love this added to the game.
That statement is nothing but a cop out from him. One of his many lame cop outs that he's been using this entire console generation. He's a joke..
