2K Sports Announces Major League Baseball 2K13 and Return of the Perfect Game Challenge

Cy Young Award Winner and Tampa Bay Rays` ace David Price named cover athlete

2K Sports today announced that the Company has reached an agreement with Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association, and Major League Baseball Advanced Media to release Major League Baseball 2K13, the next iteration of the popular MLB 2K franchise. MLB 2K13 will be available on March 5, 2013,for the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PlayStation3 computer entertainment system.

"We`d like to thank our league partners for their support in helping us reach an agreement to bring back MLB 2K," said Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. "We know fans are extremely passionate about the MLB 2K series and the Perfect Game Challenge."

David Price, ace pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays, has been selected as the cover athlete for MLB 2K13. Price was recently named the American League Cy Young Award winner after posting a 20-5 record and league-best 2.56 ERA. Price edged out MLB 2K12 cover athlete Justin Verlander for the honors, and is the third consecutive reigning Cy Young Award winner to grace the cover of an MLB 2K game.

"It`s a dream come true to appear on the cover of MLB 2K13," concluded Price, who helped lead the Rays to their fourth 90-win season in the last five years. "I`m looking forward to working with the 2K Sports team again, and welcoming another skilled gamer into `The Perfect Club.`"

The Perfect Game Challenge*, 2K Sports` groundbreaking $1 million competition, will also be returning for a fourth consecutive year and introduce a new contest format with exciting ways to win. Since 2010, 2K Sports has awarded $3 million in prize money to players exhibiting the highest caliber of skill in throwing a perfect game in MLB 2K. Last year`s Perfect Game Challenge achieved record participation numbers, with nearly 1 million attempts made and more than 1,000 perfect games registered. The contest was won by 21-year-old Christopher Gilmore, who prevailed in an eight-person tournament at the MLB FanCave in New York City. Complete details of this year`s contest will be announced at a later date.

Developed by Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio, MLB2K13 is not yet rated by the ESRB and will be available on March 5, 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 system.

I might buy this game just to thank them for keeping the series alive! Meanwhile, I might as well go for the $1 million too haha.

If you make the sliders difficult enough - to play like simulation baseball - you indeed CAN make each at-bat really tough. I've had 14 pitch at-bats, fouling off pitches, taking pitches - awaiting my spot. This is a FUN game...

First screen shot and alleged feature list over @ Pasta Padre

The surprise announcement that the MLB 2K series would return for another year – and the new license agreed upon with MLB is just for one year – came down this morning. Though the cover athlete news was announced along with it (David Price) no details on what to expect from the game feature wise were made immediately available.

Now though there is a early features list for the game that won’t quell any pessimism around how much work is going to be put into the product. It primarily contains features being carried over rather than anything new with the exception of a Playoff mode (which is also new this year in The Show). Given the constrained development cycle that may not be a surprise but it will make it even more difficult for consumers to justify the full $60 price tag.

Total Control Pitching & Hitting - The original analog pitching and hitting controls remain the benchmark. Unmatched control and realism allow you to feel the action on both sides of the plate.

My Player
- Experience the journey from Minor Leagues to MLB stardom. Choose your path, customize your player and work your way to the top.

MLB Today
- Take the field in an authentic environment pulled from the real life MLB season. Featuring the latest rosters & lineups, and relevant commentary & stats overlays.

MLB Today Season
- Play through the full 2013 MLB season, one day at a time. Real results combine with yours, allowing you to compete directly with real life MLB teams.

Dynamic Tendencies
- Player performance fluctuates dynamically as player ratings update from pitch to pitch and at-bat to at-bat.

Inside Edge & Stats Inc.
- Strategize for each at-bat with authentic scouting reports and data from Inside Edge & Stats Inc.

Franchise
- Championship teams are built in the front office, and crowned on the field. Can you master both sides of the ball and build a dynasty?

Postseason
- Relive the 2012 Postseason, or customize your own bracket and crown a new champion.

Home Run Derby
- Go head to head with MLB’s greatest power hitters in a classic Derby format.

Oh... they still have the black tarp on the Green Monster lights.

Yeah, just a roster update with playoff mode.

smells like how 2K treated Wii owners to baseball games. Fresh coat of paint (roster update) and charge full price... if true not worth the 60$ IMO

There's no way you're serious.

Very little if anything will be added, whatever they can come up with in few months

MLB did not want the largest console (in its final year) to be without a baseball game and they signed a one year pack with 2k very late. Rumor is that the pack in non exclusive, MLB wanted a stop gap measure this season and plan to have a long term deal with someone in-place for the XBOX 720. I would say the agreement just happened or 2k would have announced sooner like they normally do.

Assuming it took a month or two work out the details on the pack that would gave 2k a max of 4 months to work on new features, with no time for beta testing but I'm not sure 2k ever does beta testing, every game is very flawed until the 1st patch

Don't get me wrong if the glitch from 2k12 are fixed, the Astros are in the AL, and the roster is updated I'll be happy

But I want a PC version, in years past they were very last announcing if a PC version would be released. One year it was like 2 weeks before the release date

Like others, I bought a PS3 on black friday for the sole purpose of having a game on the ps3. After playing the show for countless hours, i dont regret the decision. However I'm not biased towards one game or another, its still good news to hear this is being released. With all the speculation going on right now, i know a 60 dollar price tag is a definite no as a first day buy right now, but i will definitely buy this for a cheaper price and proof that the freezing problems are gone. Sometimes I just want to play a game where I can hit balls in the dirt and fast forward to any at bat i want.

They could, in theory, have been developing the game before finalizing the deal with MLB.

I have 2k12 on pc which I love and I can keep working with work-arounds. I completely get what you are saying.

On 2k12 pc there is the MLB today freeze which has an easy work-around. I have also experienced freezes with custom rosters.

I was also experiences crashes prior to updating my video card drivers which some may not be doing.

All fairly easy work-arounds.

Until MLB came to 2K in December, I don't believe 2K had any intention of touching the franchise again. There is no reason to believe the game will sell significant units. Even if they thought it would sell as well as The Show, that is still far below what 2K would be interested in. The number of additional sales by doing what you suggest, which would be great, is just not going to enough to offset 2K's investment.

It would be great if I am wrong. But there is just no logical reason to expect 2K to invest any money in the game beyond what it takes to get up to speed for the new season. Best case scenario is that they are furiously working on 2K14 for the next gen consoles, and this is just a slight diversion to keep MLB happy.
You nailed it. Anyone who is expecting more than a roster update and some potential "patch-like" improvements is not being realistic and doesn't understand how companies operate and make decisions.

I have no problem with them offering 2k12 with a fresh coat of paint, bug fixes, moving the Astros over to the AL and proper playoff set-up. I do have a problem with them charging $60 for it.

I agree 100%. In fact I jumped from 2K10 to 2k12 last year and didn't think it was all that different. I enjoyed both games, just not a ton of revolutionary changes over two years. So I wouldn't have expected a big change for 2K13 with a normal development cycle...and all indications suggest it was less than that.

I also would be content with updated rosters and basically a patched 2k12......but not for $60. I think I would be in the $20 neighborhood. If not, I'll carry on with 2K12 as I had been planning to do, and keep an eye out for a price drop.

I am surprised you didn't think 2k12 was that much different. I found 2k10 nearly unplayable -- maybe it was just me but I like 2k11 and 2k12. I though 2k11 to 2k12 was a very minor upgrade.

I am a fairly casual baseball gamer, so I am sure that I am oblivious to many of the subtle mechanics. But with the upgrade to 2k12, for the most part I found the graphics to be simliar, the interface, the controls, the commentary not too far off from 2k10. I did notice hit variety was a little better, pitching a little tougher etc...nice incremental improvements. I liked them both.

What killed 2K10 for you?
