NBA 2K13 News Post

2K Sports has just released the written breakdown of all 31 NBA 2K13 Signature Skills.

Quote:
Q: Why create these Signature Skills for 2K13 when you already have several attributes in 2K12?

A: We felt that our existing attribute and tendency system quite didn’t lend itself well enough to various situational moments that happen in basketball, nor did it help identify very specialized players. Outlet passes, winning charge calls, staying hot through in-game breaks, etc, are just a few areas where our attributes system failed to give you what you need. We’re now able to dig deeper into these situations to allow players stand out where they’re most known. Let’s take shot blocking for example. LeBron James is well-known as the best chase down blocker in the league. In 2K12, when you were in a chase down situation, LeBron was unable to block the shot from behind as much as we’d like him to because he had only a 60-ish Block attribute. With the inclusion of the new Sig Skill, Chase Down Artist, we’re now able to give him the types of skills he needs to embarrass the unsuspecting shooter, without having to artificially raise his Block attribute (which would then allow him to block shots in areas he’s not known for). There are reasons like this for every skill created, which is why we’re bringing this feature to you for NBA 2K13.

Here is a list of all 31 signature skills.
  • Posterizer
  • Highlight Film
  • Finisher

And with inside scorer if you took the hook shot that they have in their arsenal you could hit 3 pointers with players who shouldn't be hitting 3 pointers. The perimeter defenders could steal the ball with ease.

As long as 2k properly balances everything it should be a great addition.
That's the issue I think 2k needs to clarify things a bit for some of us, me personally I think it's going to be a percentage game, the shot penalty sounds interesting and I think that will help balance out some of these sigs like heat retainer and microwave, along with the defensive sigs. I like this concept just hope the ratings and tendencies are configured properly. So the game can play realistically. Every sig has a counter, so I don't see any balance issues with the sigs right now.

Think they are talking about the tipping animation when going for a rebound and it bounces off the fingertips

Not for NBA players. Their confidence isn't that easily rattled, and there's no proof that it's true.

I think LD and, or Beluba is going to need to come in here and talk some people off of the ledge about Sig. Skills. Folks are going to be so worried about getting done in by an SS that they will forget to have fun playing the game.

"Hey that was a nice 10 point win you had, you played well."

"Forget that, I got ankle broken and brickwalled to floor a total of 4 times in this game, that's BS, patch this now 2K!!!"

I'm guessing its 99% online players who are apprehensive.

-_- End of discussion.

I must admit these sound good. The sig skills will make it like a game within a game. The more you know your players and the skills they possess the better your team will play. It adds a level of strategy that was missing. This is icing on the cake if most of the gameplay issues are already addressed, which looks like the case. The brusier one is genius how it impacts stamina that is definitely needed.

Well.. when it comes to packages, ratings, accessories, shot forms and now sig skills, it usually is the online crowd that complains the most about these things. I would know, I'm an online guy.

Just read about 5 or 6 pages reading in-depth exchanges concerning how much KG impacted Boston's defense vs Doc Rivers, and whether Chandler or Woodson were the reason New York turned it up defensively.

In other words, this is AWESOME. Like Czar said, the intangibles are being seriously pursued for the first time in a meaningful way. If nothing else, it's impressive progress. Their LeBron example is exactly what me and my brothers have been waiting for. Can't wait for Oct. 2.

We'd always say "Yes CP3/Rondo/Kidd is so crafty with how he gets those passes through or getting the ball to shooters right in time and right so he can just launch it, but in the game we can't punish the D like that, yeah he has 90+ passing but it doesn't matter in a lot of situations."

We'd complain about how a big charge player or scrappy player was pretty much useless in videogames. Not anymore. Really the only issue that jumps out at me is the limit. Someone on here said LeBron can't be as special as he truly is with a limit of 5. I'm with you on that, the limit should be removed. I mean, very few, maybe even just LBJ himself, would actually deserve more than 5 anyway. But giving someone like him all the appropriate Sig Skills would really help to convey the sense of overwhelming end-to-end impact he has on games. It really looks like a videogame (no pun intended) out there at times, watching him play, just being everywhere doing everything.

On another note, I think having played real ball at certain levels, most of this makes sense when you break it down, esp with the counters, and the requirements for them being triggered. If you've read that and seriously thought this could be abused with any real success, you're going to find yourself mistaken on Oct. 2.

Any word on how this is going to apply to the game-generated rookies in future years of Association?

No. I think we will have to wait til the Association Insight comes out.

I must say I'm really excited about this. I'm always excited about a new 2K basketball game, but this time I think they did differentiate the new title from the previous one very well.

I hope it works as well as it sounds. They may have to fine-tune this in the future, but it sounds really good. I like it a lot.

It also gona depends on how good the sliders that come with the game are. Imagine players getting attributes boost online in 2K12. It would be even worse than it already is. Fatigue will have to be a factor, and simulation sliders be relevant.

I'm looking forward to test these signature skills but why is there a limit upto 5?

Something that probably happens less than 30 times in an entire NBA season now has the potential of happening at least once per NBA 2K game is cheesy and immature.

I don't think you understand how high of a number 30% is when it comes to THIS.
If there is a 50% chance you can break someones ankles and by having the anklebreaker skill increases it by 30%, then YES that is wayy too high. That's an 80% chance of doing it.

I don't know how it will work, I just hope it isn't going to be cheesy like the NBA Live 06 icons.

Im still in wait and see mode, having played madden 06 and Apf 2k8 i see how these could turn out great, but some of these skills seem to be a lil generous and 2k12 has me questioning the developers eye for balance.
